- Ann Widdecombe, a former Brexit party MEP who recently joined the Reform UK party, has made controversial remarks suggesting families should forgo cheese sandwiches if they are unable to afford them.

During her appearance on the BBC's Politics Live programme, Widdecombe dismissed the notion of a 'given right' to low food prices in response to concerns about parents struggling to feed their children amid the deepening cost of living crisis. Asked how she would respond to consumers who could not afford the basic components of a cheese sandwich, she said: 'Well then you don't do the cheese sandwich.'

Shop around £2.50 is the standard price in a supermarket, but you can buy cheaper in markets, etc.

What is a "given right" is a stable currency and positive interest. How else can money property fulfil its function as a means of deferred payment or as a store of savings?
Jack Monroe made a whole career writing books on preparing more affordable alternatives to a cheese sandwich...
Monroe started in 2014, before the cost of living crisis and before Truss wrecked the economy. Even basic foodstuffs have rocketed in price since then. Still this is small beer compared to what climate catastrophe will do to food availability. The right wing as ever are happy to lead us all merrily down the plughole.

There are genuinely poor people in this country who must be in tears watching this. On the other hand, all my life I’ve seen people claiming they can’t afford to buy their children shoes ( so their kids are wearing plimsolls all year round), but they are standing there smoking cigarettes and wearing false nails they’ve had done at a salon. It goes to show that some people are poor simply because they have their priorities wrong. They prioritise their own selfish desires. I’m speaking as a mother who knows what it’s like to be poor despite my best efforts. When prices shot up last year, my first thought was for the people who already rely on Food Banks to survive. Has Ann never watched the programmes where rich teenagers spend a week with genuinely poor families, or where wealthy business owners spend a week living like a poor person, or wealthy families swap homes and budgets with poor families? If not, she ought to.

I'm not bad with money, I have two businesses and my investments return excess income. The reason I'm poor is because I give the money away to others who need it and I retain just enough to support my family at subsistence level. There are many reasons people are poor, but I suggest they are likely people who suffer oppression and have not the opportunity to fulfil their capabilities.
