Mainstream media spoils gems like this constantly. Too many chefs in the kitchen, over-production and on and on. Much better (& less destructive) to support excellence directly rather than wish a Netflix deal on anything genuinely GOOD.
Have you seen the toll a production deal takes on creativity? Homogenized it, polishes it, desensitizes it, Cans it, wraps it in cellophane and monetizes it beyond recognition or usefulness. Wouldn’t wish it on a bill collector.

It's so fascinating that you found a postbox from the Victorian age that is still usable! So I googled for how long postboxes have been the colour they are in Germany (bright yellow). They came in various shades of black, blue and other colours during the Imperial Era, then, they change to red in 1934, and that colour was discontinued in 1945. They were a dull yellow before my time, then a very bright yellow when I was a child, and now, a not quite as bright yellow. (I hope they stay the way they are now!)

Adorable video like all the ones you show us. I love your stories. It is pity that you don't know much about Brazilian singers and composers. If you knew two of our best composers, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil lived in Notting Hill for four years. Not for a good reason, though,. They were on exile. They could not return because they could be arrested. They had spent a couple of months in jail not knowing the reason and when they left they were inforned they had to leave Brazil. They chose a great place to be: London! And in Notting Hill. Caetano composed some good songs while there and one of them was recorded by Scott Walker. The one called Maria Bethania. But one of my favourite is Nine of Ten where he mentions Portobello Road. "walk down Portobello Road to the sound of reggae"...

It's not often I view videos 'recommended for you ' but, boy, am I so pleased I decided to view this one. Mobility issues and failing health prevents me from visiting the great Metropolis that is Londinium nowadays, but watching you, and Alex, taking us around two areas of the city I particularly enjoyed visiting in the mid 80's/ early 90's was a real treat. When I was visiting from my home in Bedford for a night on the razz then I'd go to Earls Court and Soho. But on non-boozy days I'd explore Notting Hill and Portobello. I'd invariably return home skint having bought some ludicrously expensive 'vintage' tat, lol. Happy days. Fantastic work, Joolz.

Thank you so much for this. I lived in Lansdowne Road my entire childhood and early adulthood. So many places I used to go were featured here. Pubs I frequented (not the main one which was the Ladbroke Arms), the church I attended, kicking and screaming, gardens which all had annual parties in July with local steel bands, games and dancing later on, real family and friends time. Portobello was where we bought all our food - it had a small and very early Tesco - and later on clothes and costume jewellery. Great memories. Thanks again.

    • @Joolzguides

Oh wow!! So you were special and got to go into those gardens?

    • @fluffyfour
      @fluffyfour 6 років тому

Yes, all the houses have small back gardens and the residents enter through them. We also had friends and neighbours in the other gardens so we were able to go to their summer parties as well. Also, we had a key to Ladbroke Square but I never worked out why! My grandmother bought the house in 1948 when the area was largely Irish and full of artists and musicians. A few years later my parents met in the same house.

That at 10:44 I remember as a kid there was a lady that came round the streets with a wooden handcart and a block of ice selling to us kids. The days before 7/11 opened up on Westbourne Grove and introduced my world to slush puppy. I remember a lot of hardship, not a lot of wealth, but a great feeling of community. I moved away from London to Sweden 25 years ago. I still get recognised as being the son of my father when I'm back visiting which isn't more than once every five years. Recognised by people unknown to me after both me and my father not being around for the best part of 30 years. Quite amazing in a city with such a large population.

*dabs tears* oh deary me... if your videos, so far, had managed to make me utterly nostalgic for London, this one in particular touched my heart. Notting Hill Gate was where I stayed in London, back in 2015. 14 Pembridge Square was my hotel. Only that it was october/november and it looked very different in cold autumn (I actually preferred it. Heat and sun are my enemies :P). Thank you very much for this. It helped me to realise how much I missed of the area! I didn't walk around that much... As a lad from Bethnal Green of long ago now living in New York, I really enjoy your brill video tours but I never heard you sing Maybe It's Because I'm a Londoner. I loved the episode on Bethnal Green and hoped you would have gone in my old street. Florida Street. Cheers ol China, Dr.David Deak 78 years young.

Great! It's a fantastic area - I actually lived there briefly in the early 80's when Notting Hill wasn't all posh. I was teaching at Holland Park School and we spent our lunch hours in the Windsor Castle. I remember they had these rather dozy upper class barmaids who took so long getting our food orders ready we had to eat walking back to work!

Don't need to go to London after you've watched these videos. This man definitely should be having more subscribers

Ha ha! Is it normal to offend people in videos these days? I suppose times are changing. I try not to. I can't see how I would benefit from it. Thanks for watching. I'm glad you liked it!

Amazing ! Nice shot of my old bed-sit opposite the Brands and Label museum at 158 Lancaster Rd (not Landsdown) circa 1968

This is why the likes of the BBC will be a thing of the past. I was born on Notting Hill Gate it was such a dump we moved to Shepherds Bush. How times have changed. Anyway, The Notting Hill Gate Record & Tape Exchange first ever store wasn't on the Goldhawk Road in the Bush, it was somewhere in Hull, Yorkshire. There's a fascinating fact for vinyl lovers

How beautiful London is now. I used to love wandering about in London, as you do, & looking at all of the interesting buildings. I think your videos are the nearest I am likely to get to doing that now. But that is good, as you supply so many interesting facts which I find fascinating! Thank you for that, Julian.

We walked up & down Portobello Road when we visited London in March! It would’ve been so much better if the market had been going, but it was still amazing. Thank you for always showing the quirky bits!

I used to live in Hesketh Place. Notting Hill is one of the coolest part's of London.

Another fine effort. It's hard to believe that Notting Hill wasn't always posh. In the 1960s and 70s it was full of hippies and Jamaicans. Jimi Hendrix lived and died in Notting Hill.
