Hey there-the reason for the ban on silicones in the CG method & its sisters isn't that silicones themselves are bad. It's that silicones aren't water-soluble. Curly hair tends to be super, super dry, and if you put water-insoluble ingredients in your hair, you need detergents to wash them out-drying it out even further. Lots of curlies do fine incorporating silicone-based products in their hair routines, though!
Also the CG method asks for no sulfate shampoos. If you dont use sulfate shampoos but still put insoluble silicones, you wont be removing them afterwards properly.
I think that if you use silicone in your hair, you must be careful to use a clarifying shampoo once in a while, such as a sulfate Shampoo, which will strip the silicone from your hair, but will also dry your hair out. After a sulfate based shampoo, you have to be careful to replace the moisture in your hair.
Some silicones are considered okay for curly girl method b/c they're water soluble & don't build up (amodimethicone & any cone with PEG or PPG in the name), and there are gentler versions of sulfates that are better to use b/c they don't completely strip your hair & scalp every time you wash (called "sulfonates" rather than sulfates). But othersuch is right that avoiding silicones as a rule of thumb in haircare was simply a matter of hydration/moisture and not a toxicity-scare like it was w/other ingredients, or w/skincare & makeup products.

Dimethicone - will not clog pores or worsen acne, smooths down the edges of the skin cells, good for oily skinned and acne prone skin, is not water soluble so will sit on the skin, mix with your natural skin oils and help degrease, makeup primers use it as a base. In hair care, it is used to protect if from heat, provide slip to detangle, coats hair shaft to help retain moisture and reduces frizz. I know theres a lot of data saying it's safe, from my personal experience it really clogs my pores and stretches them out.
Wow such a helpful video..thr r some youtubers out thr spreading wrong information about silicones..they should watch this vid. Thanks for uploading this vid..
Amazing! You’re always talking about hot topics that I’m confused about because don’t know where to get real scientific based information from. Thank you for sharing your knowledge :)
Makeup primers sit on top of the skin, where moisturizer is absorbed into the skin, and essentially provides a smooth surface (like glass) so the makeup looks flawless rather than settling into lines and pores. Eye makeup primers are tacky so that the eye shadow stays throughout the day and doesn't flake away. But always moisturize! You can use all the primers in the world but they're pointless if you're not already taking care of your skin.
My skin personally doesn’t like dimethicone, I’ve tried primers and moisturizers countless times that have dimeticone and I get breakouts... I never break out. So it’s so odd to see my skin with spots not even a couple hours later after applying anything with dimethicone... thankfully they are the types of spots that go away on their own in a few days so it’s not aweful but I’m saddened as I tried dr dray’s favourite gel cream moisturizer from neutrogena recently and thought ahhhh maybe this one will work somehow !? And it didn’t ... sigh.
same with me. I also use neutrogena primer, and I had to stop using it because it clogged my pores so bad, they developed blind pimples, you know the kinds without a head. So I don't understand how it's not harmful? I only got them when I used primer. I also noticed that my pores look worse after extended use. So I don't understand how its accepted as non harmful. from personal experience, it's terrible for my skin.
I recently tried the Aveeno gel moisturizer and started getting really clogged skin and realized dimethicone was the second ingredient. I stopped using it and my skin has been healing nicely but I’m struggling to find a good moisturizing replacement
I have also finally discovered that ANY product with dimethicone will break me out within a few days. Sadly, we must be the exception to what seems to be the norm.
I’m on the curly hair method and use absolutely no silicones on my hair. Not even water soluble. Silicones initially provide great slip and make my hair feel soft, but it puts a seal on it. Curly hair already lacks moisture, silicone coated hair simply fries it and makes it drier. I don’t understand how manufacturers are still adding dimethicone to curly hair products. We need to avoid these “silly cones”.
Being an expert in silicone industry for personal care, i can assure you that what you mentioned about silicone keeps your hair dry is absolutely none sense , silicone actually retain moisture and proteins in your hair crucial . However , i agree with you that dimethicones (which is a one form of silicones not all silicone products are called dimethicones ) is not suitable for curly hair , but not because it makes it dry , it is because it doesnt deposit well or uniformly on curly hair , so you dont actually get the benefit of silicones . You can use products using Amodimethicones if you are really looking for an amazing and outstanding conditioning effect
Thank you thank you for these informative videos. You could not be more comprehensive. A goldmine of information. I have already referred back to some of your videos to check when I hear some of the myths rolled out and I refer others to your channel.
Thanks! The cause of the axillary hyperpigmentation has to be determined first...there are several different things that can cause that, one of which is insulin resistance/early diabetes
This explains why I prefer the Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer under makeup! Thanks for the haircare info, I didn’t realize there was a water soluble silicone.
So grateful for you! I truly appreciate all that you do on your channel! I am loving the longer hair on you! Have a wonderful day. I can’t wait for Sunday morning coffee with Dr Dray and Dr Dray’s mom at Whole Foods. Take care--OH, I am absolutely IN LOVE with those naked flavored beets!
I do love the way a silicone type lotion feels on my skin. Because it does not feel sticky or greasy. But in the summer and high humidity, it feels terrible. It makes my skin sweat so much quicker. Almost like I have plastic over my skin. The same feeling on my hands if I wear a plastic or latex glove. So, in summer, I use a non silicone lotion. If humidity is really high, I may not wear any lotion. lol
Thanks for this. I had read some things online regarding dimethicone that I wasn’t believing, and you provided the facts. So thanks. Don’t know how many dudes follow your channel but I’d love to hear a video on what we can do to minimize face & neck shaving irritations. Also, thanks for introducing me to Totoro! 👏🏼
Dr. Dray - I'm embarrassed to say that I'd fallen pretty to some fallacies about certain ingredients. Silicones are one. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is another. In fact, another UA-camr was bad listing SLS today as I watched her video. I made skin care products for 17 years and I didn't use silicones or SLS. I feel a bit ridiculous now. Thank you for clarifying this and really explaining the reasons why they are ok. Your hair looks amazing and I wish I could treat myself to your necklace. I treat myself to more costume jewelry unless I make it myself. Have a wonderful Thursday! Grateful to be missing Florence here in Maryland, Lori
Lori Abercrombie please dont feel ridiculous.. cause Im one of the rare cases of bad reaction to silicone products :’( and Im so thankful that people like you make silicone free products. People who never have this problem n most commenters here are saying its just a stigma n stuff. But tbh this condition is very frustrating to me n also a bit traumatizing. Cause everytime I had to recover from bad trials breakouts and wasting so much new products..
I was recently diagnosed by my Derm as having HS. It took 18 years and 3 Derms to finally tell me what I have. I am saddened to see that so many people and professionals are clueless about this disease. I think more people suffer from this than we know but there isn't a lot of information out there. Would you please consider a video discussing HS to bring awareness? Thank you.
Thank you!!! I have such a hard time sticking to skin care routines but I’m trying to do better. There’s way too much misinformation out there. Your videos are so helpful
How about the environmental aspect of silicones? Cause that's my biggest concern. Are there "bad ones" that aren't degradable? I read a lot contradictionary things out there with no scientistic sources.
I'm not an expert but I know that silicones are present in many makeup products and sunscreens. So I'm guessing yeah, they come off with an oil based cleanser or some other type of soap/detergent. I think if they built up on the skin it would be really noticable.
@@effystonem2934 I know she said for haircare, water insoluble silicones do build up unless you use a detergent based shampoo... So I feel like that may be similar for your face as well.
@@effystonem2934 All I know is that silicone hair conditioner caused my backne and I want justice for it. People out here spreading lies about how it doesn't cause backne but it did for me.
Anything applied to the skin ends up in the bloodstream; that is the way transdermal BHRT works, and it does work. So the question isn't so much about silicone on the skin as it us about it circulating, especially given how ubiquitous the are. Silicone breast implants fell out of favor because of autoimmune problems that volume of silicone caused (literally) when they ruptured. So what is the difference between that scenario and constant transdermal absorption? Thank you.
Actually primer isn’t necessarily as long as you apply a moisturizer underneath, but primer does help if you target places like your tzone to “blur pores” and control oil
Thank you!! I had heard about "good vs bad" silicones and that sulfate free shampoo likely cannot remove lots of silicones and other products from a heavy conditioner. I have found that most silicone free hair products contain some kind of oil instead which is way worse for my fine hair that tends to get greasy quickly. Thanks for the list!!!
Dear Dr. Dray, Thank you for all this information. My main struggle is that I am not sure about the environmental effect of silicone. I was searching for some information but I am so confused. Some say, it is not biodegradable, but degradable to non-harmful ingredients, so don't worry. Some other sources say it takes decades, hundreds of years to degrade. So avoid it, moreover several tons of silicones per one year go into the seas in Europe mainly due to cosmetics. Other sources say silicone can be removed with clay filter. I just received some lotions as a present, absolutely love it, and I wish I could always use the same brand, even if I have always been silicone-free, but I also feel guilty every time I use it, that it will end up in the oceans and in the end it will go through the whole food chain. What do you think? Any of you have some reliable information? I am so confused. Thank you so much for any reply.
Thank you so much for sharing this information, I’ve been avoiding sulfate, paraben, as well as the silicone in products. I trust you and I’m going back to my favorite hair care products that has these ingredients 😊 you’re the best Dr. Dray! 💕
I understand that silicones are easily handled by many skin types. But there ARE people, such as myself, who are sensitive to it. I cannot use silicones, I get breakouts when I do. I actually have an extreme dislike for the texture of dimethicone especially in moisturizers and foundations it feels like slime on my skin and it makes me feel like I have a blanket on my face. Can you explain why it makes me breakout? My skin type is extremely oily and my skin condition is normal to dehydrated depending on the season.
It is hard to define which silicone product can give you that effect . Usually skin care products use very low viscous silicone oils (dimethicones or cyclopentasiloxanes ) to enhance the soft feel and distribution on your skin , if they use a high viscous silicone you may get that feeling you mentioned on your skin . You can not define which viscosity of silicone is used in the formula . and Dimethicone is not the only name for silicone , actually you may use products that doesnt have dimethicone but it has elastomer gels or silicone wax (chemical names of these 2 can not be defined usually by consumers ) which has extremely velvet , fast dry and sensorial effect on your skin
Same thing happens to me. Occlusivity works both ways; it traps in moisture, but it keeps oxygen out and traps dirt, bacteria, and sweat in your pores (which is super great for anaerobic bacteria like P Acnes). Sure, silicones don’t directly cause acne, but in high amounts for long periods of time they create an environment that grows bacteria and weakens skin (via oxygen deprivation). I think she underestimated how _many_ silicones many cosmetic products contain (way more than simple moisturizers) and how much time people spend with them on their skin because she doesn’t wear makeup.
Great video thanks Dr!! I tried to stay away from silicone but my hair hated me for it now I don't avoid them I'm just more aware of using water soluble silicones...
You would think that medicine has learned by now that silicones have no place within the human body. After all the implants and injections disasters regarding silicones over the years. And who do you think performed those procedures, physicians!...then you take the largest human organ, douse it with more petroleum based silicones and still think it’s a great idea. The other point is silicones are a cheap (cheapest) replacement for more expensive naturals carrier oils. The plastic industry considers silicones a plastic, surprise! Whereas natural carrier oils are chalk full of vitamins, minerals and other wholesome goodness that are absorbed directly by the skin. Why would she ask you to settle for the cheapest and most questionable of synthetics as opposed to fortified goodness that has been used for hundreds and thousands of years?? Why wouldn’t she argue for you to fortify your skin with known integrity?? At least you’re looking at the big picture doc, not! You don’t have to wait for the bus to hit you before you get out of the way.
I honestly think people associate silicon-leaking breast implants that have (I think) led to some health complications with the silicons in skin care. I could be wrong, but I think that's where some fear lays.
I don't know what's up with my particular skin type, but I'm one of the unlucky few whose skin does not react well to silicones 😭 used to use foundations, conditioners, and moisturizers with dimethicone and always got acne-like lesions on my forehead. If I forget to check ingredients and break out, usually I find I'm using a product with silicone in it. Since completely cutting them out, the breakouts have stopped. Which is really a bummer as it has been impossible to find a moisturizer that works well without it. This is just my personal experience though... Glad/jealous to hear it works well for everyone else!! Curious if water soluble/insoluble or if the concentration in the product might make a difference. Maybe one day I might be brave enough to try!
I'm just like you too T-T It's good to know I'm not the only one.. I breakout immediately in 1-2 days if I use silicone containing products (primers, foundation, moisturisers, hair care, etc.), and this frustrates me so much cause I also want that smooth looking skin effect. Trying those new popular moisturisers is just too scary for me, n it might also be a waste of money. But recently I just found that bepanthen the baby diaper rash cream works fine as moisturiser on me cos it has no silicone..

@@rochellesibucao1283 Right now I'm using Scinic honey all in one ampoule (amazon) and mizon black snail all in one cream (yesstyle) as moisturizers. The Scinic one is cheap cause it's a big jar (250 ml) and it's very moisturizing but not occlusive enough. For the occlusive, I use the Bepanthen salve which is so cheap and so good. For foundation I like lighter feeling ones or CC cream and rarely use them, right now using makeup forever water blend, it's nice and light but I haven't found my holy grail yet. For Shampoo I used to use baby shampoo and some other silicone-free shampoo but they are a bit drying to the scalp and I recently try Maui Moisture and love it a lot, I think it's the best I have ever tried so far, but they are kind of expensive I think cause seems like they use more good quality cold pressed oils and they use more aloe vera juice as the base instead of water.
You talking about primers reminded me, I heard a UA-camr recommend the Nivea for Men After Shave balm/lotion as a makeup primer. Not sure what the ingredients are, but I tried it and it worked FANTASTIC. And it's SO MUCH cheaper than fancy primer brands from Sephora, etc. A little bit goes a LONG way, too.
Water soluble, over time, gave my hair a weird buildup. I had to put Malibu undoo goo on my hair for an hour to remove it. That is so strange when they say it won't buildup but then it does. I used Pantene .
Thanks for the great information! I've also been wondering about this for some time so am very appreciative of you clearing up all the confusion I was having!

Thank you, Dr. Dray! I adore your videos, so intelligent and straightforward, busting all these phobias. They make me happy. Love the closing theme music, by the way too!!!
Such an informative video as always. I use a dimethicone detangler spray for my hair because my hair is notoriously knotty from the hard water where I live. Really good to know that it can contribute to build up. Always looking forward to the next video! Take care x
Hi Dr Dray. I have missed you. I have been busy with school...thank you for another great video. As a curly haired I have heard over and over about avoiding silicones. I am better informed now.
Omg this explains why my skin LOVES good old Aveeno body lotion. Active ingredient is dimethicone.. My faces glows from using it. Not kidding. Tried so many expensives moisturizers but my skin never actually felt “hydrated” - perhaps because I think I experience a LOT of transdermal water loss. This moistures but also leaves a coating on my skin which is great not only to prevent water loss but maybe even protecting from pollution?
The whole reason I clicked on this video was to see if silicone is ok to use in my hair. I wasn’t sure if my hair type would be addressed in this video but it was! Definitely put a smile on my face 😊🌻 Thank you!
It is probably the worst ingredient there is honestly, it’s so bad for our earth, oceans, drinking water, bodies. Silicones are plastic. Did you know that there even is plastic found in mothers milk these days due to our foods and water being polluted with it. And then Dr Dray supports cruelty free products…
@@lll7334 There are two separate questions here. The one addressed in the video is “is silicone good for your skin/hair?” The question you are addressing is “is silicone good for the environment?” While this is a great thing to point out as myself and others are unaware that it is bad for the environment, the way you are going about discussing this issue is not pleasant.
Thanks for the info I needed up front, though I feel guilty for not having gotten well into the video. The reason being, so far silicon is my hair's best protection + sunscreen for the summer. Feels nice and smooth at night on my chemically treated hair. 👍

Amazing! You’re always talking about hot topics that I’m confused about because don’t know where to get real scientific based information from.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge :)
Thanks!
Thank you! I can rest easy now I Know silicones are not pore clogging 😊
:)
:)
And it didn’t ... sigh.
I have the same problem :( I am curious to know what products you use that have worked so far?
same with me.
Same with me
I recently tried the Aveeno gel moisturizer and started getting really clogged skin and realized dimethicone was the second ingredient.

Great video.. you literally changed my skin care routine.. Any recommendations for dark underarms and dark sensitive area??

Dr Dray please do a video on this :(
This explains why I prefer the Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer under makeup! Thanks for the haircare info, I didn’t realize there was a water soluble silicone.
Happy Thursday Ms Sherry :)
I cannot stress enough how helpful you’re videos are! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!! 😘

Thanks for watching :)
So grateful for you! I truly appreciate all that you do on your channel! I am loving the longer hair on you! Have a wonderful day. I can’t wait for Sunday morning coffee with Dr Dray and Dr Dray’s mom at Whole Foods. Take care--OH, I am absolutely IN LOVE with those naked flavored beets!
those beets are good! ;)
If humidity is really high, I may not wear any lotion. lol
🌻✨Wow! Dr. Dray your hair has grown out beautifully. Please give us an update.

good idea!
Grateful to be missing Florence here in Maryland, Lori
glad you are too! i hope Florence goes away soon
Thank you.
You solved the myth- Dimethicone clog the pores! Thank you...
:)
I really love your educational videos @Dr Dray, Thank you for your well researched content!
Yes! I’ve been waiting for this video! Thank you for addressing the misconceptions about silicones.🙏🏻😊😃🌼🌻👏🏻👍🏻
Glad to hear! Happy Thursday Ms Gina :)
Dr Dray Happy Thursday, Dr Dray! Thanks again!😃👍🏻
I have read that too. But unfortunately I can't find any scientific information on it.
Can water insoluble silicones lead to build up on the skin or they go away when cleansing your face ?
thats a question i ask myself too... i’ve read that dimethicone builds up on the skin and doesn’t go away.
Thimble Fox u know what this is so true. i never broke out but it happened to me too.
Very informative as always. Now I have to go check the ingredients in my shampoos. Have a great day Dr. Dray!!!
:)
Dear Dr. Dray,
Thank you for all this information.
Thank you Dr Dray for this information.Happy Thursday ☕️🍁🍂
Happy Thursday Ms Lindi :)
Thank you so much for sharing this information, I’ve been avoiding sulfate, paraben, as well as the silicone in products. I trust you and I’m going back to my favorite hair care products that has these ingredients 😊 you’re the best Dr. Dray! 💕

there is no routine to my hair...it sort of just hangs there and does its own thing
The truth at its finest! Thanks Dr. Dray.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for explaining these things to us!
:)
My skin type is extremely oily and my skin condition is normal to dehydrated depending on the season.
i can't
I have breakouts with them too! T_T
Me too!!!!!
Thank you, Dr. Dray. That was very helpful. Have a wonderful day!
you too Ms Beth :)

Yasss! Debunking the myths!
:)
Thanks Dr. Dray, you are the best!!
:)
Thanks for sharing! Good to know the facts
Thanks for watching Ms Annette!
@@pia0591 thanks for the recommendation!! Will definitely look into it :) special needs skin ppl unite!!! And share the products we searched high and low and examined countless ingredient lists to find 😁
@@rochellesibucao1283 Yes! do you have any holy grail product or moisturiser that has no silicones?
@@pia0591 I use Yes to Tomatoes moisturizer. It's the only thing I've found that my skin tolerates well, but it's a couple times the price of a typical moisturizer 😭 currently using Bare Minerals powder foundation, and loreal eversleek shampoo & conditioner. Let me know if you have any holy grails to recommend 😊
I think i remember NikkieTutorials recommending this. I tried is as well and loved it!!

Water soluble, over time, gave my hair a weird buildup. I had to put Malibu undoo goo on my hair for an hour to remove it. That is so strange when they say it won't buildup but then it does. I used Pantene .

Hi Dr. Dray ! Dermatology 101 lecture on silicones and dimethicone. Very interesting and educational. Thank you 😀😘🇨🇦
