moisturizer containing Dimethicone actually helped my eczema and acne on my face. Yes, its a heavy silicone and thats the reason it isnt absorbed into the skin. Not all silicones are bad.

I really love your videos but I’ve removed silicone from my skincare routine and finally had success ridding my acne. Silicones cause cystic acne for me.
@@samanthao6071 any emollient that u leave on skin, including silicones and natural oils , can potentially cause breakout . Different silicones have different weights and properties. Hair products with silicone and/or other oils can cause build up /residue that causes breakout. Again, this is YMMV, I know my cystic acne prone skin can only handle silicones to a certain amount but this is true with plant oils too. what this means is it will only cause acne depending on ure skin and the formulas you use.
Isnttree hyaluronic acid toner, Benton Aloe propolis soothing gel, grape seed oil, and then Maracuja oil added at night. I use Neutrogena acne wash at night and CeraVe moisturizing cleanser in the morning.

I don't like them for my hair but my skin has never had major issues with it as an occlusive ingredient. Heavy silicone pore primer isn't my favorite though.
@@LiahYoo Every good primer contains silicones. I understand their purpose but I wanted to know more about its safety so this was perfect video. Thank you!!! But I must say I also think they are bad for regular use on hair. It's not that they weigh down your hair like in doctor's example. They make your hair look nice and everything but they also build up with time because most of them is waterproof and then your hair starts breaking off and becomes frizzy. Then you end up needing more silicones to make it look nice and it's a never ending cycle.
@@MrJMont21 What I meant is, when waterproof silicons bulid up on your hair strands, your hair can't "breath" properly and it causes your hair to look similar to straw, reed. Lack of moisture leads to frizziness. Then you end up using more silicon-based products to fight against frizzy hair, which is a never ending cycle. Since your hair strands can't lead a healthy life anymore, they become very fragile and you get split ends.
I've let go off all products including silicones or certain glycols and even some oils because otherwise I do end up getting acne and my skincare consisting of those products were a big part of it. I guess everything varies depending on the skin.
This is just breaks everything what I thought about silicone. I always stay away from silicone because I have sensitive and acne prone skin. I should corporate silicone back to my routine!
This is why I love Liah. No scaremongering. Just science that works. Can you do a video or a blog post about hydrosols? I know they're made of essential oils, but because they're water-based, I don't know whether they're safe or not or whether it's good to use it as a toner.
I'm currently using a moisturizer (Hatomugi Skin Conditioning Gel) which has silicone, I was always wondering why people said silicone was bad because I has no problems at all using this moisturizer, actually improved my skin a lot. Glad you posted this video!
thank you so much for taking your time into research and reaching out to scientific professionals to debunk a lot of beauty myths! i really appreciate your hard work
So why is it that my hair got healthy after I changed over my regular silicone conditioners and masks to non-silicone ones? my hair is finally soft and shiny and holds moisture so much better.
@@samhayet4286 I don't think so. She used a lot of silicone based primer, but I think she hates silicone in her skincare because she said it clogged her pores.
I literally was so over the beauty industry until I stumbled across your channel yesterday, looking for serum and sensible skin care routine. New subbie here! Thanks for the video!
Well silicones are not bad in skincare, but THEY ARE BAD for nature. I've heard some false information in this video. Silicones are actually very stable in the environment that's why they don't biodegrade easily. That's why a lot of silicones accumulate which is not so good for the environment. And I don't consider it natural since silicones don't appear naturally. They are synthetic although a part of it is of natural origin. So it is a choice you want to make before you start using products with silicones. Also I've heard from several dermatologists that dimethicone together with some oils can be pore clogging. So I ,as a biologist, avoid products based on silicones although I don't avoid it completely and choose products with a small percentage of it.
Do you have sources for silicones being bad for nature? I've wondered about it for quite some time but keep forgetting to look into it. Would love to read about it, though.
i am SO glad you made this video. i avoided Cerave moisturizer because half the list is basically silicone and i had to use it in an emergency and it basically saved my skin.
I understand silicon is safe, but at the same time, putting a plastic film on my skin isn't going to benefit it, at best it is neutral. I have found that it's ok (for example, in sunscreen during the day). But not IDEAL, so at night i use squalene as an occlusive instead. Neutrality in an ingredient isn't the same as being beneficial, and this is an ingredient that I'm still testing on my skin and paying close attention to.
I used to avoid silicones upon being more aware of natural cosmetic ingredients. But a while ago, I realised silicones weren’t actually harmful and used moisturisers with silicones and it actually made the texture of my skin dramatically better!!
Liah's videos changed my skin entirely. I found her videos a year ago. It's been a year of acne-free skin. I do have one or two breakouts but that's normal. Her videos educated me on skincare for acne prone skin. I cut down a lot of products and make-up. The results are amazing. I have my scars left but that's normal.
Thanks for addressing this question! It's very informative and I really appreciate the scientific back up as well. Unfortunately, ingredients like dimethicone always breaks me out, like cystic acne. I've tested it numerous times going back and forth adding and removing products with silicon and I found out it breaks me out everytime I use it and skin starts to recover. =(
Each to their own I refuse to use it in any on my skincare ,my skin doesn’t likes it !!!since a few year from now I only use eco bio organic certified skincare ,I live in Italy where we have a lot of choices thank god ,the organic BIO skincare industry expanded quite nicely here ,another thing I use bio shampoo and conditioner and everything for my hair too ! Dimetichone products for hair are tricky cause it makes you think wow my hair is so shiny and healthy when it’s the couting on the outside only !!!So for me it’s a no no 👎🏼!!!I use Korean skincare Whamisa ,Urang we can find a lot of good products that’s free from parabens silicones edta and sls sles and etc we just have to look and research and inform ourselves !!!plus when I used silicon based skincare it broke me out so yup
Wow! You know, when my skin was abnormally dehydrated, there came a video of yours telling me everything that I need to do. Yesterday, I wondered if I can access to some reliable source of information about silicone without having to search too much and now this video is what I come across. Feels like there is a person out there who cares for me, knows me and put a lot of effort into helping me to answer the questions I have. That's a pretty good feeling. Thank you, Liah :))
Ha ha, maybe. I also have another question: My skin is dehydrated but also acne-prone and a little bit oily. Should I use a chemical or mineral sunscreen? I realize that mineral sunscreen makes my skin instantly drier and the white mini dust also appear on the surface. However, I'm afraid that my skin cannot tolerate a chemical sunscreen :(
This channel is just INCREDIBLE! Thank you!! I cannot tell you enough how much I love the scientific community, every person who contributes, all the non-scientists who spread knowledge and information just because they care. We're all doing something positive and important. I wish I could tell every single one of those people how much they matter.
She has already done a video on preservatives. But you have to remind yourself that all endocrinian disruptors, as small as they can be, are still detected by our body. You can watch what the French doctor sir Sultan says about this.
Also parabens creams have been found in the UK to be linked to fire deaths. Long term use means the product soaks into clothes and makes them flammable.
Thank you making this video to calm down all the fear mongering on this silicones! It also answered all questions i didn't even have, very educational! Loved it! 👍
Yeah because silicone is a disaster for environment. Also, this guy and liah sell silicone-based products, so ofc they going to defend this ingredient.... But it's better to avoid it.
@@Kalixa1991 even if it's in their favor to do this, it's not about defending silicone use it's about increasing awareness . if you dont want to use it then dont , but dont spread lies about it being toxic to skin bc that's unnecessary fear mongering and the beauty industry will just capitalize on your fear
@@User-LS-n5m did I say it was toxic for humans? I just talked about environment lol. And I think silicones are just useless... It makes your skin look better, but it's just a feeling, it's superficial. It doesn't moisture or nourish it. Honestly my skin and hair are way better since I got rid of this ingredient. Oils are amazing and silicone-free. And you can find good shampoo without it too. Just think about the environment. Because it's not really biodegradable like they try to make you think... And it's a disaster to produce. Please go read more articles so you can have a more objective opinion about silicones. There are ingredients that are worse that's for sure, but this one is far from being great. For me, this video is clearly biased and one-sided. But whatever. Very informative and educative video to educate skincare/ cosmetics users not to mention entertaining as well which is always a bonus! Thanks Liah! Please post more of this type of video :)
I learn so much from you!!!! Have always been questioning about silicones whether they will clog pores or not since various news stated that! This video gave me a better insight about silicones and I am thankful it is more than safe for huge poresss
It’s so lovely to include another experts in your video but it just made me realise how soothing and calming voice you’ve got and therefore how enjoyable it is to learn from you 💚💚💚
I know silicone is safe and doesn't clog pores, though skincare products with high percentage of silicone(like cyclopentasiloxane) make me breakout, while makeup products with silicon don't. I am very interested to know why this is happening.
Silicone isn't toxic, however it isn't beneficial for the skin in the long run. It traps everything under it (yes that includes dirt and bacteria), which might not lead to breakouts, but can cause dull skin and sensitivity. While the sensitivity and other effects might not come from the silicone itself, it trapping ingredients such as fragrance can cause the sensitivity. Although alone it isn't bad, as you use it, it will accumulate since it isn't water saluable, thus dryness will occur, skin sensitivity, and clogging pores due to the build up of products, bacteria and dirt. However, for those who are prone to severe dryness silicones are a good options since it will help lock in moisture however, there are better options out there. People, do your research and remember that science and research is not 100%.
I don’t mind silicones in skin care, as long as they’re not in the first 5 or so ingredients, but in hair products it’s a very different story... I’ve lost my curl pattern every single time I’ve tried products with silicones 🙄 It’s just not for my hair type. This was very informative though and I think one needs to figure out what works best for oneself
wow this is amazing. I also heard form some beauty bloggers that silicone is bad and clog pores. Now I feel much comfortable primer that contains some form of silicone:)
Anecdotal, but my acne subsided when I stopped using silicones. Just want to point out that studies are funded by money, and no enterprise will put money on investigating if silicones worsen or not acne. Silicone works, it is not irritating, makes texture better and IT'S CHEAP. Not saying that it does worsen acne, but there will never be scientific literature to back it up because no one will pay for it.
Suppliers who provide silicone alternatives would fund those researches for sure if it is true! But do know that the whole formula matters more than the presence of a single ingredient. And also if you know that your skin doesn’t agree with a certain ingredient you can definitely avoid it! ✨
@@LiahYoo I couldn't agree more with you! The whole formulation is so much more important than one specific ingredient, because they complement each other. But let's be honest, silicones are amazing from wherever you look at them, and it is not worth the time or money studying if they cause or not acne in very specific skin types (for enterprises). As I always recommend, first research, then try what works for you and stick with that!
My skin absolutely loves silicone based products! Since the whole skip silicone thing, I've been having a very difficult time with keeping my makeup looking good! Now I know I don't have to skip silicone.
There's a big difference between silicones in cosmetics and skincare. Just because it's "safe" doesn't mean I'll be using in my skincare. Plus, silicones in hair products cause buildup. No thanks! I don't mind silicones in makeup, as I wash my face every night :)
Love how much research and thought you clearly put in to your skincare advice. Thank you for putting in that extra effort. I have been really curious to hear why people are so against silicone, I've never seen an issue due to my knowledge of its benefits in the medical field.
This is such a breath of fresh air! I absolutely loved this video and look forward to more in your "truth of" series. Also I can't wait for Krave to ship to Canada :)
I think it depends on the type of silicone (some are water soluble some are not). If you use a lot products in your hair, a rinse with an SLS shampoo on a regular basis, is probably a good idea. It's not dangerous. :)
PEG silicones are made to be water-soluble, and some silicones just evaporate after being applied. Just there for spreadability. Some resist buildup. labmuffin.com/amodimethicone-my-new-favourite-hair-ingredient/ Check out labmuffin’s youtube channel and her blog. She’s a chemist.
Hi Liah! I recently had been seeing reports of a lawsuit filed against Mario Badescu in 2013 or 2014 for their use of steroids in two of their facial creams. Claims continuously keep surfacing about false advertising for their products. I have never used these products, but I am currently searching for new skincare for my dry and dehydrated skin. My friend suggested Mario Badescu, but I am afraid to try their products because of the sensitive dry state of my skin and fear of making the state of my skin worse. Should I steer clear? Thank you for these videos and for providing this access to scientific professionals in the field!
Hello ! I love your videos ♥ But I have a question about sustainability : how many time silicones used in industries need to be fully degraded ? I heard that the problem of silicone is not the silicone itself, but the large quantity used VS the time required to be degraded. And what's about the production of silicones too ? Maybe the production is the real problem ? It's a really good think to find someone who explain these notions clearly in youtube : Thanks you ! ♥
Please, could you make a video on keratin? I have noticed that keratin on my hair caused acne on my neck, face, and back. But maybe it was a chain of coincidences. I don't know(
More like oil and dandruff I guess? Coz whenever I didnt wash my hair like in 2 days, esp if u live in tropical place, I started to get tiny bumps and acne around the forehead and upper neck. My hair is short. Or it maybe caused from oil in your hair product as mentioned in the video.
@@Strange.rBanger but nothing breaks me out externally. I have acne problems from my stomach. I never thought silicone was bad for skin but I always thought it was bad for my hair. My hair always felt heavier and waxy idk if it was the silicone or my scalp eczema. So I stopped using Silicone conditioners entirely and would just apply argan oil and coconut oil sprays from OGX, after showering and shampooing. Which has worked great for me in terms of hair feeling much lighter and not tangling as easily. Didn't even feel oily. But I guess silicone isn't that bad if it is indeed breathable on hair then that means it would keep pollutants out. I kinda want to try it again now.

I have got rosacea and creams with silicone are my saviour!!!
Zaki Zaki oh yes I can only imagine a lot of other ingredients could be sensitizing to you!
You are the REAL MVP. Please keep up allll that you do, you are a true inspiration. And a major thanks to Dr. Grant, as a researcher I sincerely appreciate hearing about the science and regulatory processes behind my consumption. Thank you!
I really love your videos but I’ve removed silicone from my skincare routine and finally had success ridding my acne. Silicones cause cystic acne for me.
Me too! It stopped as soon as I removed them. A silicone free haircare routine cured my bacne too.
@@User-LS-n5m Oh, I absolutely agree. it is all YMMV. I felt like she should have prefaced the video by saying that though.
What skincare and foundation do you use without silicones please?
Isnttree hyaluronic acid toner, Benton Aloe propolis soothing gel, grape seed oil, and then Maracuja oil added at night. I use Neutrogena acne wash at night and CeraVe moisturizing cleanser in the morning.
I love how the doctor explained it! Thank you Liah ✨
wish Liah was my actual dermatologist :(((
gab creates !!! Hope you find the one you can fully trust! It’s not bad to ‘shop around’ until you find the derm who really understands the physiology of your skin🙏🏼
omg thanks for this!!! I hope I can find a really good one soon 😔✊
I don't like them for my hair but my skin has never had major issues with it as an occlusive ingredient. Heavy silicone pore primer isn't my favorite though.
doconnell565 yeah pore primers aren’t my favorite either 😅
@@LiahYoo Every good primer contains silicones. I understand their purpose but I wanted to know more about its safety so this was perfect video. Thank you!!!
But I must say I also think they are bad for regular use on hair. It's not that they weigh down your hair like in doctor's example. They make your hair look nice and everything but they also build up with time because most of them is waterproof and then your hair starts breaking off and becomes frizzy. Then you end up needing more silicones to make it look nice and it's a never ending cycle.
Ljupka P what do you mean by “then your hair starts breaking off and becomes frizzy”?
@@MrJMont21 What I meant is, when waterproof silicons bulid up on your hair strands, your hair can't "breath" properly and it causes your hair to look similar to straw, reed. Lack of moisture leads to frizziness. Then you end up using more silicon-based products to fight against frizzy hair, which is a never ending cycle.
Since your hair strands can't lead a healthy life anymore, they become very fragile and you get split ends.
@@ljupka007 hair don't breath, it is a dead sustance. Silicones provide cosmetic effect only.
I should corporate silicone back to my routine!
dimethicone actually helped my eczema! I use aveeno moisturizer and it contains dimethicone.
This is why I love Liah. No scaremongering. Just science that works.
Can you do a video or a blog post about hydrosols? I know they're made of essential oils, but because they're water-based, I don't know whether they're safe or not or whether it's good to use it as a toner.
Ol' Grandpap Diabeetus I love a grandpa to take care of his skin
I'm currently using a moisturizer (Hatomugi Skin Conditioning Gel) which has silicone, I was always wondering why people said silicone was bad because I has no problems at all using this moisturizer, actually improved my skin a lot. Glad you posted this video!
If you know a formula works, stick to it 👍🏼🙌🏼
thank you so much for taking your time into research and reaching out to scientific professionals to debunk a lot of beauty myths! i really appreciate your hard work
So why is it that my hair got healthy after I changed over my regular silicone conditioners and masks to non-silicone ones? my hair is finally soft and shiny and holds moisture so much better.
Tati needs to see this lmao. thank you for the video, Liah! i feel like my IQ increases 15% every time i watch your channel 🤓
honestly I wish i could tag her in this video!
Is she anti-silicone?
@@samhayet4286 I don't think so. She used a lot of silicone based primer, but I think she hates silicone in her skincare because she said it clogged her pores.
She doesnt lol.. yes silicone is safe, no it isn’t for everyone. I break out like crazy if I get silicones on my skin
Would love to read about it, though.
is the making of silicones harmful or the silicones itself is harmful? bcs we use it for the skin so its not going anywhere close to nature.
i am SO glad you made this video. i avoided Cerave moisturizer because half the list is basically silicone and i had to use it in an emergency and it basically saved my skin.
Love your aim to educating people! I always looked for silicone free but then I grabbed a moisturizer that does contain it and my skin changed!
Faz B I am so so happy for you! Wish I could give you a big hug xx
Liah Yoo love you Liah. Game changer! No spots at all. Took exactly a year. No kidding. Lots of love and well wishes from Singapore.
This was such a great video!!! I really love this approach to the ingredients! And thank you John!
Tabatha Poelstra he’s a true gem! Thanks for your time x
Trần Hạnh Phương omg! Telepathic maybe?😊💚
Liz Lemon aw thank you!💚
This video was sooo good and educational! Thank you Liah!
Ilan thank you so much for your time! ✨
About Parabens please. I've heard they're also not as bad as they are projected
She has already done a video on preservatives. But you have to remind yourself that all endocrinian disruptors, as small as they can be, are still detected by our body. You can watch what the French doctor sir Sultan says about this.
@@MrsLyxing Okay, thanks!
Also parabens creams have been found in the UK to be linked to fire deaths. Long term use means the product soaks into clothes and makes them flammable.
Thank you making this video to calm down all the fear mongering on this silicones! It also answered all questions i didn't even have, very educational! Loved it! 👍
aarontheabc now you have a better understanding educating your customers + viewers!👍🏼
I know silicone is safe but i still prefer silicone-free products
EDIT : oh I just read that some silicones are endocrine disruptors (Cyclotetrasiloxane and Cyclopentasiloxane)
Same. It’s just frustrating to find silicones in almost everything when it breaks me out.
@@calacatia2000 I don't know where you live but here in France we can find many natural / organic brands now and silicones are forbidden (for organic labels)
Very informative and educative video to educate skincare/ cosmetics users not to mention entertaining as well which is always a bonus! Thanks Liah! Please post more of this type of video :)

Thank you Liah and Director John for making this video and shedding the light on this topic. Highly informative and interesting! 👍

I find Silicones do not let the skin breath. They make my pores more congested one recently noticed this with the Aveeno calm and restore gel cream
I learn so much from you!!!! Have always been questioning about silicones whether they will clog pores or not since various news stated that! This video gave me a better insight about silicones and I am thankful it is more than safe for huge poresss
this deserves so much more views
It’s so lovely to include another experts in your video but it just made me realise how soothing and calming voice you’ve got and therefore how enjoyable it is to learn from you 💚💚💚
I know silicone is safe and doesn't clog pores, though skincare products with high percentage of silicone(like cyclopentasiloxane) make me breakout, while makeup products with silicon don't. I am very interested to know why this is happening.
I love silicones. Thank you for your video. One of the most intelligent UA-camrs on here!
You keep my passion for skincare going! Thank you so much for your videos and all the research that you do
Lena Chatz Aw thank you so much!!
I absolutely love the GBR! Thank you so much Liah for your hard work
Oh wow thank you so much Zack! Glad you’re enjoying the formula as much as I do 😊💚
실리콘이 들어가면 오히려 다른 의문의 대체성분이 들어갈 확률이 적겠구나! 생각하게 해준 아주 멋지고 고마운 영상입니다♡
Wow, this video answered all of the more difficult questions that I had about silicones! What a great vid!
The silicones at the very beginning are okay. Like cyclo- silicones. They evaporate once the product is spread.
wow this is amazing. I also heard form some beauty bloggers that silicone is bad and clog pores. Now I feel much comfortable primer that contains some form of silicone:)
Thank god cause i just bought the paula’s choice hydralight moisturizer with silicone thinking it was bad 😩
You are a blessing to us all!
Thank you Liah people go crazy with all those assumptions
My skin absolutely loves silicone based products! Since the whole skip silicone thing, I've been having a very difficult time with keeping my makeup looking good! Now I know I don't have to skip silicone.
This video is gold. Thank you Liah!! More poweeer 🔥🔥🔥
D Repia aw thank you!😍✨
There's a big difference between silicones in cosmetics and skincare.
This was so insightful Liah, I really enjoyed the scientist explantion on silicones - wonderful indeed! BTW - loving the GBR! 😃
Melibras aw thank you for enjoying the formula 😉😌💚

Loved this video! I definitely had preconceived notions since so many advertisements say "silicone free"
This is just what I need, I just start using iunik centella calming gel cream which is contain silicone inside.
Rury Rachmatika if you know a formula works, stick to it 💋💚
What about the claims that silicone in hair care products can’t be removed with a mild shampoo? Does it also depend on the formula?
I think it depends on the type of silicone (some are water soluble some are not). If you use a lot products in your hair, a rinse with an SLS shampoo on a regular basis, is probably a good idea. It's not dangerous. :)
PEG silicones are made to be water-soluble, and some silicones just evaporate after being applied. Just there for spreadability. Some resist buildup.

Manael B that part, I’m not sure if I’m not the right person answer. You can definitely hit up John!
Hmmmm for most, they take about 500 years to degrade. Not worth it

Wow, this is truly an eye-opener. Thank you very much!
