- Ingredients base
- 125g butter, softened
- 135g cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 260g flour
Method
1. In a bowl, mix the butter with the sugar until the sugar has dissolved.
2. Next add the egg, vanilla and baking powder and mix until incorporated.
3. Add the flour to the bowl and mix until the dough comes together. Then turn out onto a floured bench and knead with your hands for 2 minutes.
4. Between 2 pieces of paper, roll out to 0.5cm thick, then line a greased pie tin with the dough.
5. Place a piece of baking paper in the pie tin and add some pie weights. Bake at 180c for 15 minutes before removing the weights and placing back into the oven for another 12-15 minutes or until it’s cooked through and light golden brown.
6. Leave to cool before filling it.
Ingredients filling
- 3 eggs
- 30g corn flour
- 30g flour
- 1000ml milk
- 150g sugar
- 50g butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
- ground cinnamon
Method
1. In a large pot add the milk, vanilla, butter and sugar and place on medium heat.
2. In a bowl, add the eggs, corn flour and flour and whisk until smooth.
3. Add 1/3 of the hot milk to the bowl and mix in well. Once smooth, add the ingredients from the bowl to the pot with the rest of the leftover milk and mix over medium heat.
4. After cooking for 5-6 minutes it will start to thicken. Once it’s thick, add this to the cold pie base and sprinkle with cinnamon.
5. Place the pie into the fridge for at least 4 hours but overnight is better.
6. Slice and serve. - Навчання та стиль
Love the karate chop after closing the fridge door haha

I enjoy watching all the different kind of food you make with unusual names
That’s why we all came to the comments section 😆
Yay thank you for trying this! Us South Africans LOVE milktart
You dont know how happy i was to see someone make a true south african dish, please do more if you can as the food in soith africa has a wide culture variety❤❤❤❤❤
I could never get mine to set properly but delicious anyway. I have asked @andycooks to make a Bobotie. But what is Bobotie without zMrs Balls?
@Nancy J Mrs HS balls a true classic😂
Amen to that lets ask him to do some South African traditional dishes
@@geminigirltwo Its not the same thats for sure. 🇿🇦😅
@@geminigirltwoyou can make your own. So easy
Nailed it Andy! 🇿🇦 super proud to see you make something from SA
Hey man is it like a cheese cake sort of?
@@bryangaytan hey there! I would compare it to a custard tart of some sort however milk tart is more milky and with the added cinnamon adds a lovely flavour. The texture is smooth and creamy. Hope you get to taste a piece! 😋
Lekker at last we need to be featured
@@SuperAd1980 It's similar but not quite the same.
@@bryangaytanit's a custard tart sprinkled with nutmeg.. delicious
I'm always looking forward to seeing you make a South African dish! This made me so happy and proud 😁☺️ South Africa, stand up! 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
We here girl 🎉🎉 pupupuuuhhhpupupuuhhhh
Interesting way of making it. I have other methods and recipes if you are willing to try it. As a South African I can say that milktart "melk tert" is what home tastes like😬
Yes and malva pudding
can you post a recipe in the comments please? :)
@@rorybennett4665 Damn I'm making malva pudding tomorrow for my dad's birthday😂😂 what a coincidence
@@dgooshe Chef always posts recipes under the description on the front page 🙃
I thought "the taste of steel" is what for a South African tastes like home... 😅😅😅
Well done on a South African favourite..
This is what i like! No talking, just creating.
Wow really interesting. My mum always made one with no dough base and the whole thing is baked. Similar to impossible pie it makes it's own if you do it right but it's really finicky. I might try this custard style, honestly looks easier
Yes! My grandmother also bakes the custard mixture with cinnamon sprinkled on top
Thanks for putting a smile on my face as south african.... love milk tart🎉🎉🎉🎉
Looks good Andy Nice to see you cooking things for yourself! 😊
Best comment. Deep cut
A deep dish custard pie… I love it!!!🤤❤️
It’s nothing like custard tho😂🙌🏼
Milk tart...very delicious.
Another South African dessert...Malva pudding...
malva is so delicious😊
can you share the recipes 🤣

This is a link to a South African home made cook making Malva Pudding.
It's a sweet sponge pudding drenched in a butter and cream sauce.
You can eat it with cream, custard or ice-cream.
@@eugeneveldsman2416 where's the link? Thank you btw
Pure South African dessert. Just the way we make it😍😍😍🤩😁😁😊😊
プロの世界では常識なのかもしれないけど、タルト生地を焼く時に豆を重り代わりにしているのが好きだな。
You can not under estimate the flavour of such a simple looking dessert. I grew up on this, and not having a sweet tooth, this is perfect. And love your deep dish version!! Please send me some 😂
Fellow saffa?
@Hendri Nel yes. Although I moved to Scotland in 1998. Hard to find good milk tart, or any South African products.
As a South African who eats this almost every week - thanks for showcasing one of our dishes!
Woohooooooo!!! 🎉🎉 A "Saffa" classic, for sure. Thanks for shining your spotlight on this South African treat, Chef ❤️
Oooo we south africans have a lot of good stuff to try. Do malva pudding soon
Shoutout from South Africa ❤🎉🎉please make more food from here 🎉🎉🎉
Wat moet hy Braai maak
I remember my South African step mum making this for a family gathering when I was a little girl, it was so good I always wanted to learn how to make it! I’ll have to give this recipe a try 😁
Finally something from Southa Africa. APPRECIATED ❤. How about SA Braai vs a bbq
Omg Andy yesssss. Taking me back to my childhood. This stuff is bloody beautiful. Wayyyy better than custard tart.
Hi from Greece!!!
Here in Greece and to be more specific in Peloponnese we have a similar recipe....called galatopita!!!
You have to try that one too!!!!
Hi from Australia!
My go to dessert at my local Greek restaurant is Galaktoboureko.
Will have to make Galatopita. Good idea 😊
Yummo!
I am going to give this one a try. One of my favorite dishes is South African Bobotie their national dish. Pure delicious.
To be honest I'm not sure we even have a national dish 😅 so many cuisines from different cultures
I have asked Andy a few times to make his version of Bobotie. Let’s see if he comes through.
@@seasonalserotonin2559 My family has been making it since the late 80's and the recipe came out of a cookbook called: South African Favorite Recipes. On a UA-cam search it is common to hear it referred to as being the national dish. Who knows for sure.
@@seasonalserotonin2559 true. Maybe just braaivleis?
I love watching you cook!! Thank you so much🎉❤
This is the exact recipe my mother inlaw gifted me 32 years ago. Definitely a family favorite.
Reminds me of the Buttermilk pie I grew up eating in the southern US.
Danko is thank you 🙌🏽🇿🇦 that's a very delicious South African dessert right there!!
Thx for making a South African dish, Andy.
We eat a lot of this here in South Africa, great job🙌
Looks fantastic yet so simple!
First thing I thought ❤
My gran always made the best milk tart - such nostalgia watching this! Thanks Andy 🙌🏻
would you share the recipes kind Sir?
@@kuteken6312 if I knew the recipe I would share it 😅 sadly didn’t pay much attention as a kid, was more focussed on the final product but I think recipe is in the description and there’s a bunch online
Looks great! Would love to see you have a go at Quebequois Butter Tarts!
From SA and this thing slaps, probably the best thing you’ll ever try. Gran still makes it every time i ask…🔥🔥🔥
These are delicious. Thanks Chef for giving us a taste of home 😊
I’d love to see your version of a Yorkshire Curd Tart Andy. However, I’m grateful for anything you post; I love, love, love your food and deeply appreciate you sharing it so freely. 🙏

As a Saffa I'm going to say, good job and enjoy 😊
Woah the hell that’s soo weird. Welp I guess another thing added to my list to make! It looks delicious tbh.
Still waiting on the Cantonese family style dinner for Heun Wah please chef!
I mean it’s kinda like that Chinese dessert fried milk, milk thickened with cornstarch and set, which is floured and deep fried
@@kelvin3103 yes similar. I kinda forgot about that tho 😅 I don’t eat Chinese foods too often as I want to broaden my palate and try different foods all the time! I don’t think I’ve had that for nearly 10 ish years haha
In America we call that custard pie too. Scrumptious
What a true Sunday afternoon classic after lunch.
True to SA
One of my favorite desserts and it's really easy to make with ingredients you can find at any household
Yes! This is so good! As your next South African dessert, may I suggest Malva Pudding? 😁 I love your videos, your all awesome!
Milk tart Is a south African classic. Super tasty.
Goed gedoen, oom Andy.

Love your desi dishes, reminds us of home❤❤
And now I like you even more🤩. Thanks for making a truly South African tart! 🇿🇦
That looks delicious! 😀
It’s been years since I’ve had a milk tart! Had no idea it was a SA delicacy but it was also quite popular in Botswana. Pricey but delicious. Thanks for the nostalgia Andy❤
Much love and respect Chef Andy for exposing us to all these incredible foods from other countries. Your videos have always helped me because I'd take a look at the milk tart and instantly think it'd be too time consuming to make, but it clearly isn't.
Only a true Boer will know this treat and the feelings of nostalgia it can bring
Thank you for featuring our milk tart. It is si good. 😊🇿🇦
As a South African. I approve. 🎉
Yum!!!! Childhood favorite!
Thumbs up 👍 👏
Loved that 1 illusion finish pose after you placed it in the fridge 🤙🏾
Chef Andy, if you're going to do these shorts, can you post the longer video too? You're our culinary sensi, taking us on culinary trips around the world.

Salute Eb South africa ❤️ 🇿🇦
Everything you make looks delicious 😋
Back when I was in culinary school, the first time I blind baked a crust, I forgot to put parchment between the dough and the beans. Needless to say, that crust was a lost cause. I didn't live it down for weeks. Both the chef instructor and my classmates rode me about it. I took it cheerfully, because I deserved it. In my own defense though, I make food, not dessert. I'm really not even remotely interested in patisserie.
🇿🇦 I like to add the butter right at the end, it makes it super creamy. And also chill it first in the fridge , patt dry with roller towel and then add the cinnamon
That.... Looks amazing!😋
That looks really good.
Ooooh! Love it! ❤
Oh wow great dish.
Oh my that looks good
Feeling proud seeing this as a South African🤍
Was so surprised to see a notification for this one! One of my favourite desserts ❤
