"You'd have to be out here for that to make sense." That is about the most comprehensive statement on outdoor adventures I've ever heard. Would make a great motto or tagline.
Part 2 was worth the wait. Really nice shots of the scenery and your camps. Thanks for sharing Shug. You always bring such happiness to this mans life.
Well of course Part 2 was an excellent follow up ... with a few classic Shugrow chuckles! Love the walk by with the little "hello" and WF's nod of the head! Glad you fellers got out and about and shared it with us mere mortals!
Wonderfull trail and great pictures Shug! Yes, one really has to take the hammock outdoors and test it in many settings. Thanks fro taking us a along, Cheers, Marc
***** OK you got me beat! I'm officially jealous that all I'll get is a great view and the dulcet sounds of the upper greenwater river for my view. The wiskeyjack lake looks like pure heaven to be hanging even for 1 night. Keep up the great hikes, they are fantastic.
That sunset, man people can only dream of those. Great trip, wish I had been there to be honest I like your philosophy of this one, of taking it easy and enjoying it. Life isn't a race there is no big prize when you get to the pearly gates for rushing. Thanks for taking us along.
another hum dinger of a video shug. Thanks for bringing us along once again. I imagine we are getting to that time of year where we won't hear from you in awhile. With your work and all. Cheers
Gotta say this is one of my favorites of yours. However, it makes me jealous. I get my gear all packed up, the permit in hand and something always comes up where I have to cancel! Wanderin is a great add to your videos, his subtle comedic ways gets me chuckling pretty good. Having a hiking buddy like that is a blessing.
Thanky from all of us that are cooped up in windowless offices, dreaming of lollygagging in the Great Outdoors. As the previous poster related, your videos never cease to lift the mood and stir the longings for fresh air, gurgling waters, fragrant flowers and singing birds....sigh.
"prom queen of hiking trails" you are good with the metaphors : ) Wanderin' looks like he's from the future with those cool glasses. Love love love this quiet path you trekked. It IS good to switch gears and slow down the pace. I need to be reminded of that all too often. Always good to see you carbing up at a restaurant on the way home. That's part of the fun. Good Times!!!!
It's a shame that the camera never does that gorgeous view over the lake. Wow.. Even watching this on my big screen TV... just beautiful! Thanks for the video
breathtakingly Beautiful and at the same time "lord of the rings" adveturous looking wilderness there Shug. million thanks as Always for taking us with you :)
What a wonderful hike. That sunset sure was a beaut...the lake so still. I didn't know if up was down or down was up it was so mirror perfick! Thanks for taking us along amigo. Stay safe and well. Thom
Howdy Shug , I've been watching your videos all morning , one after another and just can't get enough of your wisdom and comedy. I've got something that I wanna pass along to you about alcohol stoves. I know that you love your Fancy Feast stove so I did some experimenting with a new type stove that I call the Vienna Stove. It's a Vienna sausage can with a 6 ounce tomato paste can inside. Which gives the 1" above the Vienna can that I understand is the preferred height for optimum heat distribution. With all the proper notches and vent holes it's the same set up as the Fancy Feast stove just a little bit bigger. There's no cutting the can down to get the preferred 1" height on the tomato paste can , just remove the bottom , wrap the felt wick around it and slide it in the Vienna can and you're done. Try it if you want to , I like mine. Best wishes to you and your wife.
Hey Steve. I am joined at the hip with my Fancee Feest! I have so many stoves and many sent to me but I always favor the FF. It has never failed me. I get a bit attached to my gear. I'm real glad you are enjoying your Vienna stove. Thankee and Whooooo Buddy)))
+Matt G Hickery and I were just up there on Snowbank/Dissapointment and Sioux Hustler Oct. 2 -10. It was amazing. Glad you got some good Glory back there.
I just got back today from a three-nighter first foray into hammocking and this video already made me feel nostalgia. I saw one mosquito during the entire trip and that just cruised past me. There were midges (culicoides) but even they were pretty sporadic and not too bad at all. I spent a little time getting my hang right too, but when I did it was bliss. This video also brought back one of my fondest experiences; lying in my hammock awaiting slumber and listening to the astonishing improvisations of one of the most under-valued songbirds there is, the common blackbird (turdus merula). It's not a bird found in the New World but there was a bird in your video which briefly sounded not dissimilar. It's a bird that is so familiar that people seldom stop to listen, but I frequently do and am dumbfounded by its inventiveness and musicality.
M00nsplitter Happy for the report. Be patient, unlike a tent that you set up and crawl into, a hammock is a bit more to dail in. Sounds you are on your way. I like it when it is all birdy.
I appreciate that you included all those birds singing. There was one bird I keep hearing, I think it is a Wood Thrush, that reminds me of an Irish tin whistle. We have a bird out here in the west that sings like that too. They are hard to see, but can be heard in the dense forest areas along the coast or in the Sierra. For me it is the glorious sound of nature ringing through the piney woods. There was a scene in the Movie "Never on Sunday" where the bouzouki player refused to play anymore because the intellectual guy said he couldn't read music. Then the nice lady said to him, "Can the birds read music, listen to their beautiful song." The bouzouki player started playing again.
Thank you, Shug! Such wonderful country up there! I live in Tennessee & I can get to the point where you hear no "interference" but we have elevation, so it takes a lot of work to get there..
That sunset was magnificent brother. It don't get no better than that. Those 2 stars you were seeing possibly were Jupiter and Venus. They were in close proximity at that point and should have been visible in the early evening sky. Great video. Enjoyed it much.
hardrockcharlie1 Too true. The BWCA must have some of the best sunsets I have ever seen......and I have seen a lot around the World. Those planets were right on us.
I loved the way (at 4:18) you look at the camera, point and then you can just see your inner monologue go, "Feck it! There's no need for words, it's just too damn purdy!"
Little know fact...It is impossible to say "good eye might" without sounding Australian. Thought you and W.F. needed to know that. Don't say I never did anything for you. Great trip (as always)...thanks for sharing!! A.S.S.S.
That sunset at 9:20 with the fishes = MAGNIFIQUE! I also loved your mosquito impression at 2:14! Hehehe... And at 24:15, WOW on that tree, is that mushrooms?!
Looking like a possible low approaching -30° in Finland in a week or so (January 29th, 2019). If the forecast calls for -40° or lower, will you pack your pulk and head on up for an overnighter?
Shug I hate to even imagine how much time I have spent watching your videos, but it is time well spent. I enjoy them so, and can't wait to do some Hammock camping myself. Have you had any experience with Hennessy Hammocks? My local trusted retailer sells them. Thanks again for the entertainment!!
Two questions. What do you suggest as a good wind screen for a alcohol stove? Not sure what material is light and durable. Second question, on my hammock I wanted to suspend it using 550 paracord to cut weight, but don't want the chord to cut into the tree. Any suggestions on how to make a little strap or pad so it doesn't tear into the tree?
Jacob Ziech Tin foil or flashing work good. I got one from here...whiteboxalcoholstoves.com/buy.html Don't recommend 550. Had it break on me and it stretches. Get these....www.dutchwaregear.com/tree-huggers.html
Wondering about this trail for a long day hike if canoe camping on S. Hegman or Little Bass... paddle up early in morning to the N. Hegman to Angleworm portage and hike away enjoying a long day on the trail. Too much to bite off ?
Absolutely gorgeous hike. No bugs in Minnesota, here its been crazy due to the mild winter. Hey Shug, I was going to ask, how did the scalding the tortilla work? I saw a steak grill video and they said NEVER use Heet to grill or let it touch food. It's not food safe. Can you share your experience? Thanks for taking us along.
Ah a pan. That's the way to do it. I've done it over natural gas at home sans pan but after seeing that guy use 151 alcohol to grill his steak it got me worried. Thanks!
doesn't matter what mood im in,i always smile when i watch your videos, great camera work great video content, very entertaining, how gorgeous is that countryside? thanks from Australia.
If you can't appreciate where you're at - then don't go!! GREAT vid Shug. I was getting worried, we did not see a "camera throw" until well into the second vid. But rest easy, all is well!
Thanks for the rest of the story! FYI, I had a similar experience in my WB BB 1.7 Double. Brandon said it can come from laying too far down or too diagonal in the hammock. I figured if it had a built in foot box my feet ought to be in it, haha. Hope WF gets it worked out. WB makes a great hammock, but like you said we're all a little different in what we like or what works. Take care.
***** Haha, Yea, I got antsy too and ordered a Dream Hammock Roaming Gnome. I didn't need a double since I have quilts. Got a bit of a wait on the build though, roughly 2 months. I'll make due with my UK Hammock Woodsmans X until it arrives, Take care.. Ordered me a ULA OHM 2.0 today and it's already shipped, Whoooo Buddddyyy! Can't beat that!
great video! 2 friends and i plan on hiking this trail next week 10/6/16 - 10/9/16. this will be the first trip to the bwca. would this be a good trail for beginners?
***** Yeah, kinda stopped in the middle when I saw the lantern and asked the question...then felt stupid when you gave a detailed description later in the video. haha...thanks for the help sir.
got ta try that Pack-it Gourmet. They should give you free food. I bet all the people on this comment list will try it cause of you. Keep up the hiking I really enjoy this.
Hi Shug...what is that little watch like thing hanging on your pack on your right shoulder strap? Also seen it hanging from your ridgeline. Is it a watch or GPS or what? Curious.
Nice. Where do I get one? I'm slowly getting into this. Following all your suggestions. Already got a Warbonnet Superbly set up in my backyard in porch mode. My snake skins (which your also recommended) came today. Got a cheap ENO hammock to start practicing with. Got the Warbird on my Christmas List. Getting there. Thank you so much.
Thank you. And thank you again for all these free videos. You need to write a book Shug. It would be a best seller and a go-to book. BTW have noticed your subscribe number is growing by the week. Approaching 40,000. Amazing. Self perpectuating growing on it's on. I know why.
I was watching all of your BWCA vids and it's making me wishing my trip up there with the scouts was tomorrow. But it's not until the end of August. Do you happen to know what the bug situation is at that time? It will be my first time up there. Looking forward to it.
Adam Holbrook That is a very smell pot for sure. Mine is the next size up he used to sell.....about a cup and a half. Love that thing. I do own a QMH though too.
Off topic, but...Oh my dear hammock friend. Please never stop doing these videos. There's nothing more enjoyable on youtube. That is freedom. Sadly there ain't such freedom in Germany, everything is so restricted. It's like a very short holyday for me, thanks shug
Happy to see some new hikin' videos! Also glad to hear you are performing again this year at the Minnesota State Fair. Are the shows all similar each day, or are they a bit different each time? Hoping to catch one of them this year!
55 first thing in the morning.....I wish. Full summer here in GA, we wake up to 70+ this time of year. Start sweating just getting up. After watching some of your other videos I bought an IMUSA pot and fancee feest stove. Now when my son and I start planning he won't let me pack any other combo. You can't beat it for general overall performance to weight. You are always in the half leg pants, how are ticks and poison ivy/oak/sumac in MN? Ticks are bad for us this year and carrying some nasty ailments to boot.
rugbyturner I like my man capris...get some breeze up my legs. Clothes, socks soaked in permetharin to derter ticks. Got not a one on me. FF and Hillbilly pot are a real good fit.
That is a quality english accent you have mastered Shug! Great video. Just started a little channel myself here in the UK, grace us with a view when you have a sec. Whooo Buddy!
Hey Shug, Greetings from Utah! Have you ever done an episode on footwear? I would love to switch to trail runners yet if I encounter a really rocky trail, for more than a few hours, my tootsies get tender. So I stick with my Asolos which are quite light for a full blown boot...and as comfy as the dickens. Give us a footwear primer please!
ahh,,,that's right i remember now,,,when you were talking you had your zipper on the left side,,,,well im gonna halfto call Brandon,,,cuz in 04 i had a major accident,,,and my right arm is bent at the elbow,,,about a a foot shorter reach on the right side,,,so i think having the zipper on the left side would be perfect for me,,,thanks,Shug,,,and happy 4th !!
"You'd have to be out here for that to make sense."

Thank you so much for sharing! Those lakes are beautiful, I would love to just jump in! Whoo Budddy!
poppabear666 It was a little cool for swimming in that cold water....for me! Needed warmer temps to really want to go.

Thanks and thanks.
Great video as usual. Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences with us. You are a great ambassador for the BWCA trail system.
E Wynn I thankee for that. Don't want them to get TO popular. I think they are a bit remote for most.
Whooooooooooooooo Buddy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love your vids Shug! Nothing better than relaxing in the woods.
Hangs with Raccoons I thankee so.
Every year for fathers day me and my boys go out on some outdoors thing. This looks like just the ticket.
Thanks for the video / info. So nicely done.
+rubbersole79 Do short days and enjoy.

Dean Kirby I love hearing that....now back to work!
Those two bright "stars" were Jupiter and Venus. Great video and great spot!
"prom queen of hiking trails" you are good with the metaphors : )
Wanderin' looks like he's from the future with those cool glasses.
Love love love this quiet path you trekked. It IS good to switch gears and slow down the pace. I need to be reminded of that all too often.
Always good to see you carbing up at a restaurant on the way home. That's part of the fun. Good Times!!!!
CampfireTalk It did make me slow it down and do the Uber-Lollygag.
What great video!
I can't thank you enough for capturing nature's beauty!

Fantastic video my friend! Thanks for taking us along!
lonestarrider Off again in the morn....thankee.
Hey Shug, I did the Angleworm though hike last Monday through Wednesday. Definitely my favorite trail in terms of beauty and huge pines. Awesome!
+Matt G Hickery and I were just up there on Snowbank/Dissapointment and Sioux Hustler Oct. 2 -10. It was amazing. Glad you got some good Glory back there.
Thanks Shug for another great trip report! Makes me ready to hit the trail! Moondoggy out!
Moondoggy The trail awaits the Moondoggy....
Awesome trip Shug thanks for sharing it! I like the beard man! Let grow. it only feels itchy for the first year or so.....:)
TomsBackwoods Beard already gone......thankee Tom.
The aurora were absolutely magnificent Tuesday night. Laid in my hammock and fell asleep under the lights.
+Matt G You got the show!

It's a bird that is so familiar that people seldom stop to listen, but I frequently do and am dumbfounded by its inventiveness and musicality.

That hammock your friend made is awesome.

Thank you, Shug! Such wonderful country up there! I live in Tennessee & I can get to the point where you hear no "interference" but we have elevation, so it takes a lot of work to get there..
abe lincoln I love that Tennessee elevation for sure. Pure Magic.
Great trail Shug. I like the slow pace allowing time for taking it all in, my kind of trip. Tip on those hobo's, add some sliced up taters.

Glad to see you had so few bugs, mister. I tried a day hike and have to tell you, I think they all came north of the border!
Chris Koski I'll be back to BWCA next week. I am expecting bugs!

Yes, short trail but keep in mind it is remote.
Man alive, it should be against the law to make that trip without an ultra light fishing rod! The kids and I enjoyed watching, none the less.
MTAlex73 I just never got into fishing. But I may sometime up there. Or hope a friend fishes...and catches.
Hey guys...what kind of lantern is that? Is that the Luci Solar Lantern? If So, give me some thoughts please, it seems like a good light to read by.
Paul Baroni It should say right on the video. Light, bright. First trip with it.
***** Yeah, kinda stopped in the middle when I saw the lantern and asked the question...then felt stupid when you gave a detailed description later in the video. haha...thanks for the help sir.
Most entertaining shug wooooo buddy!
Jason Chasteen I thankee.
Wow..beautiful spot
+RS Marett Yessir
got ta try that Pack-it Gourmet.
Curious.
+RS Marett It is a clock/thermometer.
+RS Marett Try Amazon.com......Coghlan's Time/Temp Digital Dangler
Thank you. And thank you again for all these free videos. You need to write a book Shug. It would be a best seller and a go-to book. BTW have noticed your subscribe number is growing by the week. Approaching 40,000. Amazing. Self perpectuating growing on it's on. I know why.
Going on this trip in Oct. Can't wait!! Is it easy to get a permit for this trail?
Never mind looks like after Sept 30 you don't need to make a reservation.
Goat Self register certain times of year. High season requires permit. Fairly easy to do.
Great video Shug!
We want to go there this fall(mid October) would that be a good idea?
Or is it too cold at that time?
+Dima&Nadia Gula It will be cold then.......freezing at night. In the 30ºs or so at night and cold/cool days. I say go!
I was up there on the 5-7 of October. Had a low on Wednesday morning of 28 f.
Is the Luci light better than the sunlight you are using here? Or equivalent?
They are pretty equal.
I was watching all of your BWCA vids and it's making me wishing my trip up there with the scouts was tomorrow. But it's not until the end of August. Do you happen to know what the bug situation is at that time? It will be my first time up there. Looking forward to it.
Terry Schemmel Be prepared for bugs)))))) Maybe check www.bwca.com for more recent updates. But be prepared.
Thanks for the info Shug. I am really looking forward to the trip.
Also just to mention, Tinny of minnibulldesign brought back the QMH beer can pot (by popular demand). I'd say largely thanks to you, and your videos.
Adam Holbrook That is a very smell pot for sure. Mine is the next size up he used to sell.....about a cup and a half. Love that thing. I do own a QMH though too.
Haha, that's what I need a real coffee lover's sized cup! I don't go long or far without a cup.
Anyone know the name of the bird calling at 16:49?
thepatermagnus do do do bird!
This was great!
rayc1962 Whooooo Buddy
Thanks for sharing.
vagabond88817 Y'elcome.......Whooooo Buddy))))
Thanks, Shug.
***** Y'elcome!
I love these hikes. No fishing?
Bobby Harper I don't enjoy fishing. I like filming.....
***** I chased a red squirrel though!
Off topic, but...Oh my dear hammock friend. Please never stop doing these videos. There's nothing more enjoyable on youtube. That is freedom. Sadly there ain't such freedom in Germany, everything is so restricted. It's like a very short holyday for me, thanks shug
Uller Man Danke......I will continue to make them for as long as it is fun.
Happy to see some new hikin' videos! Also glad to hear you are performing again this year at the Minnesota State Fair. Are the shows all similar each day, or are they a bit different each time? Hoping to catch one of them this year!
seanerdid My show is my show and basically the same.....changes a bit with each audience. Got a new hiking vid uploading soon...
The 2 stars were, I believe, Venus and Jupiter. You had an excellent front row seat to it!
Joe Harrison For truth! They were vivid!
Wonderful country. Thanks for sharing. No Fishing?
apaulanarius I love a fish dish but do not wish to fish. Preper to film than fish. Thankee.
My favorite campin' meal is biscuits and mustard, with some French fried pertaters...mmmmmmmm
Marshal Jim Duncan A gooden fer sure....
Red Earth Outdoors Thankee and best one your site. Keep making the videos and they get better and better. Changes the way you view a trip.
Cheers for the response! I will continue to make them and learn. Love your style mate.
Give us a footwear primer please!
what does a reverse lefty do for him,,,on his Black bird ?
John Marvel Zipper on the oppisite side from stock XLC Blackbird...like mine. ua-cam.com/video/0jU8mzz3xJk/v-deo.html
ahh,,,that's right i remember now,,,when you were talking you had your zipper on the left side,,,,well im gonna halfto call Brandon,,,cuz in 04 i had a major accident,,,and my right arm is bent at the elbow,,,about a a foot shorter reach on the right side,,,so i think having the zipper on the left side would be perfect for me,,,thanks,Shug,,,and happy 4th !!
well...i messaged Brandon,,,and asked him to put that entrance/exit on the left side,,,reverse of stock,,,thanks Shug !! Cant wait to get a hang !!
