Winter Camping on Eagle Mountain BWCA

  • On New Years Eve, we hiked 2.5 miles out to Whale Lake in the Boundary Water Canoe Wilderness Area (BWCA) in the Superior National Forest in northeast Minnesota. A late start, a hike that was more challenging than expected, the cold temperatures, and my hiking partners struggles to stay warm, caused us to retire well before midnight. The temperature dropped to -15 degrees F that evening. I slept warm in my hammock and my hiking partners were comfortable in a hot tent.
On day two, we recuperated and spent most of the day gathering and processing firewood. I escaped to hike the 1.5 mile trail to the summit of Eagle Mountain, the highest point in Minnesota. The deep undisturbed snow and the sunset at the top of the mountain over looking the BWCA was magical. We enjoyed a great campfire that night. Temperatures dropped to -12 degrees F that night.
The third day, we packed back up in negative temperatures and made the 2.5 mile hike back out to our cars.
It was a great adventure and I look forward to more winter camping soon.

Thank you and hope you have a good 22.
Watching this and dreaming about some hammocking, while I sweat in near 40C summer temps here in Western Australia.

For a number of my wilderness winter trips I used a smaller Dana Designs backpack to hook my pulk to the waist belt. The pack belt keeps the attachment points spread out and it doesn't 'squeeze' together like your harness did. In addition, it was a convenient place to have gear or stow gear away that I wanted to have handy for the day's travel. I also use skis instead of snowshoes. I used vapor barriers inside my plastic ski boots and would put the inner synthetic socks (drenched with sweat) underneath my sleeping pad to stay thawed out over night. Thanks for sharing.

Really nice trip and video. Breaking trail is a team effort, taking turns is of great help. So good for you to help out the other guys. Well done.

The newer iPhones are better. I have and iPhone 12. You definitely need to keep it warm when not shooting. Also, when cold sometimes my finger doesn’t work on it. I keep a power bank handy if the cold zaps it. Ironically, the cold will cause the phone to over heat.

@@MidwestBackpacker also it was nice to see the sled in action after watching your build video. How did it perform for you overall? I heard you mention a few times about it tipping over... Thanks.
