I remember going to the GS office in London and gym is quiet popular amongst workers and it was really nice to see people taking time for their body and having that balance.Great video as usual Afzal!

Great question. People are respectful of religion and non-drinking, etc. Nobody looks down. However, people do build stronger connections and relationships through mutual interests such as drinking, just as you might with someone that shares a relatable and similar interest to you that isn't drinking i.e. sport/hobbies.

Problem is I have no background qualifications in this sector apart from a AAT Level 2 Accounting Qualification and have poor academic GCSE Results Also no work experience in this sector and I am 26 and where I live there are pretty much only hotel, retail and care work jobs going also with the lowest salary average in the UK. What would be the be the best entry point/way to get into banking in my situation any advice? Was thinking about Taking a Finance course on Open University (remote learning) Advice would be greatly appreciated
I work at a BB in NYC and drinking is a big part of the culture. Happy hours and networking events will almost always have alcohol. No one cares if you drink or not, as long as you are able to hold a conversation and have fun with the group...you are good.
@@xDarkpenance I don't know how banks work in the UK as opposed to the USA but in the US you can start as a teller and work your way up into a pretty decent salaried position that does specialized type banking. If you want to go beyond that you can always take classes so you can do something like wealth management or analyst of some type.. Starting out as a teller while doing school though gives you a foot in the door to the industry for when you get out of school. I'm early 30s and just started a job at a very large bank in the US as a base level banker/teller but am also going to do some schooling to at least get an associates degree. It's never too late to start something! I worked at a family owned company since 16 but needed a change and banking/finance always interested me. Best of luck dude!
Acctually, a lot of your thoughts to the end also apply in general to larger cooperations or "ladder environments". I worked for a large telecommunications company. Similar working environment put on to you by the directors.

@@garethgazz9332 Investment banking is parasitic. They benefit from these deals almost always more than the clients do themselves. It isn't even that interesting, rather, the work they do is quite frankly is dull and mundane. Truthfully, you do not have to rub so much of a brain cell less the Quant, and the risk department. Interesting, because they like to act like their shit hard and prestigious. Reality is, is that a run of the mill dentist, or doctor practicing in bumfuck middle of no where, does infinitely more interesting work, and is infinitely more prestigious/respectable. These IBers should try an O-Chem or BioC class just to put in perspective that the work they do is not that intellectual. Just a bunch of mundane and tarted up corporate business BS. But can you blame them? These archaic and out of touch banks have sold these naive and "plucked and ready for the pot" IVY leaguers in thinking that investment banking is prestigious and financially rewarding. /Rant over
Technology can be both front office and back office. Nowadays Quant Developers work in the "front office" where they are directly related to the revenue generation of the business...
I'm doing Computer Science and will be joining an investment bank upon graduation after being invited back post internship working in technology. Everyone was really nice and welcoming so not all places are the same! Just as Afzal is saying. :)
