Depending on the interviewer they will throw in an unexpected question to see how you react. It's not the answer you give it's more your ability to think fast..

As a business student who has to deal with arrogant finance students all day long, this video is quite shocking to me. They always talk about how hard IB is, but to see you confirming it is kind of sad. Nobody should work so many hours and I wouldn't trade that salary for my free-time in any way. Using people just to make new business opportunities is also a sad life, just fake people everywhere. Glad you got out.

But I agree that across the whole firm it’s very common to eat at your desk and in the evening the office gets way more quiet and you can focus like at the library.

It really is entirely different to working in IBD. Money is not as good but I could only assume the hourly wage will defiantly be higher.

In fact the actual quote used to be “Don’t kill yourself over this”, which is of course a terrible thing to say. There actually is a lot of truth to what we see in the episode, with my experience in IBD. They have done a great job of capturing the general environment, the emotions and the pressure where you feel like the whole world is on your shoulders. omg this is so true, I hate people who expect to stay up late in the office for no good reason. I interned at EY (transaction advisory services) and we were done by 7pm one day. So all of the interns asked around the office, if there is any more work we need to get done or if anyone needs help, but the seniors said that no, everyone is finishing up and we are free to go home. The next morning we (interns) got a FURIOUS email from one of the A2 who was so incredibly rude and said that it is nonsense how interns went home at 7pm while he had to stay until 10pm with the workload. Like how are we supposed to know that you will get new tasks at 9pm??
At my job (M&A law), we have strict hours for when we need to be on call. The partners will be furious if we don't respond during those hours, but our time is our time. Granted, we're on call 90 hours a week (9:30am-10:30pm M-F, 10:30am-10pm Sat & Sun), but those clear boundaries makes life easier & less stressful. I'd hate to work a job where the expectations of the job weren't laid out clearly.
Great reaction! In the sales, tech, and finance space the scene where he is completely stressing out is unfortunately very common. The culture of a single mistake can cost you a career is very real. It doesn't mean it will happen but perception can rule reality.
There are so manny youtube channels who talks about Investment Banking and in general investment industry. which I think most of them are fake and pretentious. Yeah my sisters ex worked at top tier investment bank in London and was so burned out after few years, he now works 9-4 in a regular high street bank selling insurance to regular people. He looks great and is happier than he has ever been.
I'm just glad I have more validation that I wasn't the only person to watch this series. It felt like when it came out no one was talking about it when it's a great show that needs a season 2
In a way, NYC is getting a bit of karma for the years of abuse of tens of thousands over the years. From the immigrant who needs to work 3 jobs to survive, to the office worker who needs to commute two hours, to afford something remotely middle class outside of the City, to the person who has to work for companies that abuse, just to enrich themselves

I’m not in this industry, but as a young Black woman, I’m noticing a lot of AMAZING things that the series is doing with the characterization of Harper and Eric that must be discussed. Some people get stuck in the industry, but many people actually work hard, get successful, build up some capital, manage their own portfolio and work on something that requires less time and they're more passionate about. If you end up like the guy dying in this episode, the promise of a great future won't be worth though. It's a gamble whatever you choose to do, like most things in life.
I started a as a minor associate in a bank in Belgium, and remember a colleague who started with me. I was in banking for tax optimization, so it was rather easy. But he, he worked nights, he once scared the night watch

What was interesting for me watching your analysis was that for some of the things you said weren’t happening friends of mine that work at other investments banks experienced those things. And it’s true that it really comes down to company environment and ethics. Like maybe not at Goldman does it happen…but it happens elsewhere. I hope this series motivates more people to speak out about those traumatic and just downright terrible experiences they’re having.
The excellent thing about Industry is that it highlights how it’s never been a meritocracy; hardly are people in their positions based on merit. It’s all about who knows who and last names etc. Harper finessed her way in, like Eric and it’s because they have the skills..just didn’t grow up with the *prestige*

Is it bad that I squeaked when Hari mis-clicked the wrong font? Reminds me of the time when I almost screwed up and replaced all character combinations "one" to "1" across a pitch deck as a shortcut. Fun fact, there are a lot of words like "telephONE" or "hONEd" which turned into "teleph1" and "h1d" which, while I spotted and corrected the errors in time, was a terrifying experience.

I thought the set design was excellent but definitely exaggerated drug use. I’m CIB and know very few people like this! At the end of the day if you live like that, you become a liability for the bank - wayyyy more so than for a font error!

Interesting view.. I’m currently in Sales, but want to switch to a more investment focused role (either in PWM or AM). Many of our wealthy UHNWI clients just want to have a trustworthy relationship manager who assures, that their discretionary managed portfolios are well invested. Clients don‘t bother about the performance so much as in AM. And PWM Sales people are generalists, not investment experts, I regularly need to educate our Senior RM‘s about derivatives and other hedging instruments 😂. Whereas Sales people in AM often have a CFA.
Ah fair, I hear you. There's the 'hybrid' option of becoming a client portfolio manager in AM which would be a good first step to consider before going all in on the investment side. Either way, good luck with it! 👍🏽

I had the same thought as you though, I didn't think that was still asked as an interview question, and was something from the 90's. Took a gamble and told a dirty joke I recited from a chainmail I remembered from 4th grade... interviewer burst out laughing.

If font family and sizes on presentations are such a big deal, why don't they have tools that enforce that? like a custom powerpoint that has those best practices in them so you can't even messed up?
I did an internship in the city and we had a "riff day" (it wasn't called that though) basically it was a presentation to say what we did during our internship and present any work and the impact we had.

5:45 you get ranked, you're either a top quartile performer, mid-tier, or bottom quarter. many people get hired and also many people get fired at the same time. 7:05 her MD or the person she reports to. 8:10 as Junior, she needs to research and write report on which stock to buy or not. 9:00 the compliance in the bank can read your emails and your instant message. he's working long hours, then he might be struggling. he might not work as good as we are. 11:40 I've got capacity. competitive complex between. he feels most need to take on most of the work and do lots of face time and always keeping score. to taken to client meeting for greater exposure. 12:40 your work will speak for itself. 15:35 building financial model for valuation 16:25 the culture is eating at the desk. Ugh - unfortunately, a lot of corporate America is heading in this direction. Just go to Linked In and see how many articles there are about work life balance of people working from home. Non-existent. Now imagine when people had to get dressed up to go to an office and commute! I would stress eat, gain 15 lbs, have heart palpitations, not go to the bathroom for the first time until well into the afternoon - then the division would fold, or the company would merge with another, and I would get laid off. That was God telling me that I didn't belong there. No human really does... that amount of hours isn't normal for a functioning person... Great Breakdown!
I knew someone who worked in a church office years ago and one of her responsibilities was to print out the part of the wedding service in which the minister says the blessing over the couple and the congregation responds "We will" when appropriate. Anyway, in this case, the groom in the previous wedding was named Will, and the current groom was "Richard".The usual "edit and replace all" function she used had an unfortunate result and she didn't proofread before printing out the copies and placing them in the wedding programs. So, when the minister asked "Do you (the church) promise to pray for Richard and Sally?" The congregation blinked at the sheets in front of them and said, "We...Richard?" It didn't get her fired but the bride's parents had a fit!

This is really great analysis. I'm an outsider when it comes to any of this show's jargon, and the British accents and slang add another layer of complexity. Glad to know the producers have got a good hold on the way a bank would be laid out and function. I figure the party life is the drama aspect, but it does make you wonder what all these people so to blow off steam.
I was asked by a US PE shop 'Tell me a joke'. Was really surprised, as I'm based in Asia and never in a million years would this question come up in the Asian interview context. I didn't crack a joke, coz I think it would be rather awkward to say something not really funny, instead I recommeded a comedy show that I love. The response was quite ok, but I guess with this experience I'll be more thorough with my preparation for the US firms.

I started a as a minor associate in a bank in Belgium, and remember a colleague who started with me. I was in banking for tax optimization, so it was rather easy. But he, he worked nights, he once scared the night watch

What was interesting for me watching your analysis was that for some of the things you said weren’t happening friends of mine that work at other investments banks experienced those things. And it’s true that it really comes down to company environment and ethics. Like maybe not at Goldman does it happen…but it happens elsewhere.
I hope this series motivates more people to speak out about those traumatic and just downright terrible experiences they’re having.
The excellent thing about Industry is that it highlights how it’s never been a meritocracy; hardly are people in their positions based on merit. It’s all about who knows who and last names etc. Harper finessed her way in, like Eric and it’s because they have the skills..just didn’t grow up with the *prestige*

Is it bad that I squeaked when Hari mis-clicked the wrong font? Reminds me of the time when I almost screwed up and replaced all character combinations "one" to "1" across a pitch deck as a shortcut. Fun fact, there are a lot of words like "telephONE" or "hONEd" which turned into "teleph1" and "h1d" which, while I spotted and corrected the errors in time, was a terrifying experience.

I thought the set design was excellent but definitely exaggerated drug use. I’m CIB and know very few people like this! At the end of the day if you live like that, you become a liability for the bank - wayyyy more so than for a font error!

Interesting view.. I’m currently in Sales, but want to switch to a more investment focused role (either in PWM or AM). Many of our wealthy UHNWI clients just want to have a trustworthy relationship manager who assures, that their discretionary managed portfolios are well invested. Clients don‘t bother about the performance so much as in AM. And PWM Sales people are generalists, not investment experts, I regularly need to educate our Senior RM‘s about derivatives and other hedging instruments 😂. Whereas Sales people in AM often have a CFA.
Ah fair, I hear you. There's the 'hybrid' option of becoming a client portfolio manager in AM which would be a good first step to consider before going all in on the investment side. Either way, good luck with it! 👍🏽

Actually, I got "Can you tell me a joke?" as a question from my Goldman Sales & Trading interview back in 2015. I had the same thought as you though, I didn't think that was still asked as an interview question, and was something from the 90's.
Took a gamble and told a dirty joke I recited from a chainmail I remembered from 4th grade... interviewer burst out laughing.

I did an internship in the city and we had a "riff day" (it wasn't called that though) basically it was a presentation to say what we did during our internship and present any work and the impact we had.

Ugh - unfortunately, a lot of corporate America is heading in this direction. Just go to Linked In and see how many articles there are about work life balance of people working from home. Non-existent. Now imagine when people had to get dressed up to go to an office and commute! I would stress eat, gain 15 lbs, have heart palpitations, not go to the bathroom for the first time until well into the afternoon - then the division would fold, or the company would merge with another, and I would get laid off. That was God telling me that I didn't belong there. No human really does... that amount of hours isn't normal for a functioning person...

I knew someone who worked in a church office years ago and one of her responsibilities was to print out the part of the wedding service in which the minister says the blessing over the couple and the congregation responds "We will" when appropriate. Anyway, in this case, the groom in the previous wedding was named Will, and the current groom was "Richard".The usual "edit and replace all" function she used had an unfortunate result and she didn't proofread before printing out the copies and placing them in the wedding programs. So, when the minister asked "Do you (the church) promise to pray for Richard and Sally?" The congregation blinked at the sheets in front of them and said, "We...Richard?" It didn't get her fired but the bride's parents had a fit!

Nothing to do with the city itself, more to do with the way humans treat each other. Some small towns are just as depressing and soulless. Chasing big money does not mean another human without the same ambition is worthless. Many people get this wrong

This is really great analysis. I'm an outsider when it comes to any of this show's jargon, and the British accents and slang add another layer of complexity. Glad to know the producers have got a good hold on the way a bank would be laid out and function. I figure the party life is the drama aspect, but it does make you wonder what all these people so to blow off steam.

I was asked by a US PE shop 'Tell me a joke'. Was really surprised, as I'm based in Asia and never in a million years would this question come up in the Asian interview context. I didn't crack a joke, coz I think it would be rather awkward to say something not really funny, instead I recommeded a comedy show that I love. The response was quite ok, but I guess with this experience I'll be more thorough with my preparation for the US firms.
