- Опубліковано 12 жов 2023
- UVA Law adjunct professor Jim Donovan, vice chairman of global client coverage at Goldman Sachs, discusses what it takes to become an effective investment banker during a talk at UVA’s Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. (University of Virginia School of Law, Oct. 4, 2023)
This guy has never used a filler word in his life
Yes, it s weird no?
One concise fella
Jim Donovan seems like the type of guy to have a business card with subtle off-white coloring and tasteful thickness.
Interview:
1. Read the WSJ every day. One article on macro economics, one on an especific company transaction, one on the op ed page.
2. Get familiar with the 3 financial statements.
3. Get the interviewer to talk about themself.
4. Ask open ended questions.
7:02 Keeping the job:
1. Find a role model. Whoever is the best.
2. Make it clear that you have no ego. No task is beneath you.
3. Take notes. It conveys seriousness, shows the importance you assign to the topic, gives confidence that you are not going to forget. Recap the meeting at the end.
4. Work hard.
5. First impressions die hard. Be very responsive, especially early on.
6. Never stop learning.
14:04 How to excell:
1. Give your client advise that is the best for them, even (and more so) if it's contrary to your interest.
2. Take a position. (Assume the responsability on the matter)
3. Embrace and relish in adversity.
4. Master discipline.
5. Excell on the merits.
6. Never, ever, give up. Don't take no for an answer.
Please post way more Jim Donovan lectures and speeches!
Yes! Simply the best professional!
That guy is terrifying yet the best motivational speaker I've ever seen lol Some tough love, really makes you want to go get your shit together
I agree! As a young law student, this man has given me more meaningful advice than most of my professors.
is he a guest lecturer? he seems to be talking about similar materials in a couple other youtube videos of him a few years ago.
but the guy def knows what he's talking about, i learn something new every time i watch him talk.
Look how prepared he was. He learnt by heart the structure of the presentation with no slides at all. 4 key topics, each one had a certain amount of advices. Amazing brain, you can clearly see what Leadership means here. He is like a military General.
I wish my lectures in college were this good. Clear, succinct, and actually valuable content from someone that has a wealth of knowledge and experience.
He missed one important skill to become an elite investment banker: Getting a table at Dorsia.
This guy never has a problem getting into Dorsia.
I am not an investment banker, but his lectures on the industry and work ethics has been revolutionary in looking at client relationships for me.
Jim Donovan gives incredible lectures! My only wish is that we had more of them. I’ve watched all of them so far and have learned a lot, keep ‘em comin!!
After this video I subscriped the WSJ Newsletter.
I've been waiting for a long time for a continuation of Jim Donovan's videos!! Everyone should check out his lectures "Secrets to Optimal Client Service" , "Are You Destined to Deal?" and "Managing Client Relationships ".
Thanks to the University of Virginia School of Law for posting this!
Investment bankers at GS keep a relatively low profile - Thank you, Jim Donovan for taking time to drop absolute gems. No matter your career pursuit you can find a way to apply these practices to your path for success.
How many years have you been at GS
Every speech he gives has a Gordon Gecko like tone and delivery to it and it’s great.
We need more lectures from Jim Donovan. Thanks!
Impressive. Very nice. Let's hear Paul Allen's secrets to the making of an investment banker.
Jim is a hitter. I can tell that this is another classic, definitely saving it.
Need more Jim Donovan content! This guy’s solid.
Love the bullet points he provides to navigate through not just a career in banking but in life as well. You don’t need tips on how to enjoy vacations or spend your money, like Bruce Lee said, don’t pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one. In this case, Jim gives us the tools to navigate through a difficult but rewarding path.
I'm not and never going into investment banking. But my God I learned enough from this talk that I could apply to any business career. And it's more helpful than trying to get career advice at most undergraduate business programs. Jim Donovan's advice can be for anyone who wants to start learning business or be better at it.
Extremely grateful Jim Donovan is willing to share his immense amount of wisdom and knowledge with all of us. Timeless and incredible advice for people of all professions to follow.
Thank you Jim for dedicating so much to your craft and passing down to others what you learned along the way. Very grateful to hear your talks.

This is aimed at aspiring investment bankers but I tell you what, this is some of the best advice I have ever heard for multiple careers.
Jim Donovan is a legend!
These kind of men need to join public service, especially in the current environment.
If there are not big dollars to put in their wallet, they won't get involved.
@@TheTruthSeeker756there is a ton of money in government. Congress can insider trade legally.
Not sure why the algorithm suggested this video for me. I admire hard work. I admire initiative. I admire selflessness. This guy certainly has an impressive resume. I wonder though, if/when he looks back on his life, would the sacrifices that he made have been worth it.
Great advice beyond investment banking
Thank you for your suggestions, I love them 😀
I live for these
Yes, please post moree!!!!

Please post more of Jim Donovan
Execelent speech, he is someone I look up to, he is my role model even though I didn't pursue a career in IB.
The best way to achieve work-life balance is to be really good at what you do. I think at least 90% of people don’t understand this.
I'm sure you think your comment is very insightful, huh?
Love this
Solid life advice not just IB! Thanks

I used to look around at management committee meetings and think, “If we were to go to war, who would I want to be our leader”. Jim Donovan would definitely get my vote.

Jim Donovan 2024
I am going to watch it again just to write it down.
WONDERFUL , NO BETTER ✅👌
Anything with fierce competition will be difficult to succeed in. that really can apply to sports and other sectors as well. My favorite observation is F1 drivers. There are only 20 drivers in the whole world that will actively be behind the wheel of an F1 car… think about that for a sec. There are billions of people on the planet but only 20 get the opportunity.. if that isn’t fierce competition idk what is. being great at your craft is the greatest equalizer imo. love the video!
Also, read the Fundamentals of business by Michael Scott.

Big Dawg back on Campus - LFG J Donovan 😈🥷🏻😤
This guy has the best comments.
Voice ❤
Jim Donovan is vice chairman of global client coverage at Goldman Sachs, where he is responsible for advising many of the firm’s largest corporate and individual clients.
UVA is very good at teaching students how to look professional. Wish he actually goes into how to make good use of the notes, for example, on the more concrete level.
Is there the same style of video for jobs in trading room ? I mean, with speakers as experienced as Jim Donovan in this field ? (Even if most of Jim Donovan’advices are also applicable for jobs in trading rooms)
I love him. Please post more lectures for us. He is a god
This is my Super Bowl
Props
