Thanks I will , I have been watching a squirrel nest in the trees up at my camp over the years and they keep all the squirrels in the area away from their territory so a nesting box will actually reduce squirrels in my yard if it's the same at my camp. I feed the squirrels and I have not had any squirrel damage to my garden . Interesting experiment with feeding them and now the nesting box will be interesting to observe.
I think you’re onto something Steve with deterring these critters from causing severe damage to your property by furnishing them their own digs. Nice job Buddy!
Doug its an interesting experiment but so far I can see more benefits already from feeding then as they do not touch anything in my garden. I like to work with nature more than against it . Cheers bud 👍

Mount the box facining away from the wind. On the east coast, at least in Nova Scotia, the entrance should face north/north-west . . . just the opposite. And if summer heat should ever present a problem, this side of the tree provides shade from the tree trunk.

The wife is so excited to see this as the squirrels are all over it already . Its going to be an interesting experiment on how the squirrels react to it being in the tree :) I think its the start of a squirrel farm LOL

I will set up a camera on it. They are investigating it with interest after the first five minutes I put it in the tree LOL

How's she goin'? This is a nice project for using up some scrap wood around the shop!!! Nice build too. The flashing will really be good to keep the rain out. BUT, since I'm not a squirrel fan, I think your skills could be used in other ways!!! LOL Take care!!!
HAHA build it and they will come. You build one and the grandkids will love it plus they are so territorial I'm suspecting a family will set up shop and guard the homestead. LOL

The squirrels love it . The squirrel feeders I showed on my channel are a huge hit with my little friends too. These animals are so friendly when they get to know you. Awesome to have around 👍
I purchased a squirrel house at Lidl for only $20. It is very nice and big too with a tilting access door to clean it out. But I like the idea to make more.
The squirrels do like a solid house compared to a bunch of leaves and twigs LOL
Need to add a "porch" under the opening. They love to exit the hole and get on the porch and look around. Great for watching the babies as they grow. We have done many like this. Nice video.

This is a great idea for your wife's birthday . Yes build her one and get a 50 pound bag of whole corn at tsc stores to feed them . Yep happy wife.
Very nice Steve I am feeding them to they are eating my tomatoes so I planted 3 plants on the outside of my garden fence for them so they won't get to my garden we have 50 acres of woods around my house the animals are taking over.

Danny I have 6 squirrels in my yard and not one bit of damage to my tomatoes that are 10 feet away from my squirrel feeder. I'm using whole corn and its working real well so far .

For the more skilled, I'd definitely recess a bottom into a continuous rabbet or let it into a dadoes groove so water would flow down the sides and not pool at the bottom corners. Not for beginners though. Nice box! Love the inside mesh, good idea!

Didn't know raccoons preyed on squirrels.
Yep they are responsible for most deaths as their nests are not as protected as my squirrel house. The raccoons can't reach inside my squirrel house as I've seen them try and give up.

I tear open an old pillow or cushion, throw it somewhere out of sight and let them use the stuffing for their nest. They leave my furniture alone now 👍

I really love your build. I saw an in house cam of a squirrel getting ambushed by another squirrel. I understand that you are to put two exit holes for quick escape.
Thanks , I have looked into this and from what I understand one hole seems to be preferred as their natural nests have one entrance as well . From what I've seen no other squirrels seem to dare go near this squirrels house as they are vicious defenders of their nest. Cheers 👍

What are the measurements to cut the lumber?
@erickennedy9762 I didn't provide a cut list because squirrels are not too picky about size. My design is very flexible in size, so just make it the size you like .
How did you attach the flashing? Before you screwed the wooden roof on?
I just used some small nails to hold it on before the roof went on. You could use a hot glue gun as well.

Thanks , yes it's pressure treated , no need to paint and the cracks are needed to provide some air flow . The squirrels love it.

Do you think there would be a problem making this a duplex? Nesting box for 2 squirrels with a divider in the middle? Would it be a conflict with them? I mean, I have a bird house with multiple nesting, and it works for them.
I see how the squirrels are so protective of their nesting site that a duplex would result in one never being used . The one nesting box put in my yard has all the other squirrel's staying away if they know what's good for them :)

Do you have a list of the materials and what size each board should be?
Mary, the squirrels house does not have to be an exact size, so just make one that is big enough for a squirrel about 8x8x 12 inches high and it's will be just great.
Any idea if that guard will deter starlings? I’m having an issue with them now taking over the nestbox 😢
I have never seen that but I'm sure the squirrels would easily kick out the birds if they want to nest there.

I investigated that question too. Aparently the next squirells that use it will take all the nesting material out and put their own back in if they desire so its self cleaning then 😅

Good question , I did wonder too, but it's not sealed up tight as the wood shrinks and causes space between boards, and the squirrels keep coming back.
plastic to secure the box isnt a good idea, squirrels could chew through that in seconds, they can chew right out of a cat carrier in under 5 mins.
@3dp_edc Logical concern but the squirrels have nested in the box all this time and never chewed on the plastic straps.

Can I use cedar boards to build it?
Cedar is much better and lighter than pressure treated. If I had some cedar that would be my first choice . Cheers 👍

Pressure-treated wood has been imbued with a combination of pesticide and fungicide. It isn’t recommended for animal nesting boxes . Cedar is the first choice . Just don’t use cedar chips inside as nesting material . I read that they are not good for squirrels. It’s best to let them make the nest with their own choices . The mom will even pull out her own fur to line the nest for her babies . A few coats of food grade sealer works great ! Think kitchen butcher block sealers . Nice work btw…

Squirrels ruined 2 wiring harnesses for tractors and damaged inside and outside of garden shed and camping trailer. Without preditors they will over populate if there is enough local food ( my 2 large black walnut trees).

I have experienced that too in the past but after putting up one squirrel house and feeding them they stay away from my stuff and surprisingly keep other squirrels out of their territory. It's been an interesting experiment and quite the success at living with nature for a positive outcome. Cheers 👍
