Some cardboard got left on our deck this winter. Squirrels were tearing off pieces of it and using it to build their nests. Must be good insulation. I'm glad we're the Home Depot for squirrels.
I really enjoyed seeing how diligently, she was filling it up with leaves... Thanks helping them, and so much more, for it with us.. I like to think 🤔, my little guys, I care for at home in our yard, feel like "they know a guy" for food and water.
WOWO! YOU SEE HOW HE DID THAT?? FIRST HE USED TWIGS AND STICKS TO BUILD THE FOUNDATION, JUST CARPENTERS FRAMING THE HOUSE!! THEN HE ADDED THE LEAVES OR INSULATION , SUPPORTED BY THE FOUNDATION// IS THAT SMART , OR WHAT?
😍😍adorable cutie did a great job he must be tired now I know leave lots of good leaves 🍁 🍃 out there in backyard for these cuties to use for their nesting
Omg I just want to help her/him! We see her work in speeded up time, but each one of those mouthfuls involves so much work outside the nest to find, secure & then bring home the nest material. I want to climb a ladder & fill the nest with leaves for her. Or him. Great vid, thanks for sharing it.
I see the squirrels in my neighborhood, they're always busy and diligent making nests, looking for food, caring for the babies, looking out for predators(too many), burying food for winter, stacking more leaves for winter ... ... that's why I never allow my dogs to chase or bother them.
I used to build squirrel houses and when I was finished I would put a big handful of Timothy in it before I hung it, sometimes two if the weather was bad. They really appreciated it because they also had something to chew on besides keeping warm . I gave them peanuts roasted in their shell and unsalted in a self feeder so they could take one whenever they wanted . The Blue Jays didn’t like it because they couldn’t get in the feeder which had a heavy for them plywood lid with hinges but the squirrels just put their nose under the overhang of the lid and pushed it up and took the peanut’s . When he backed up the lid would close by itself from gravity . I built it that way so it wouldn’t open too far and then fall back in place .
I’m surprised to see squirrels sleep alone. I always imagined them to all squeeze in and cuddle in cold weather. Lol 😆 I know birds often roost together. Squirrels are so territorial! I know the have a hierarchy when it comes to favourite eating spots.
They will often nest together in winter for warmth, especially siblings, but they tend to be solitary creatures the rest of the time. When females become pregnant they find an assertiveness & territoriality that most squirrels don't normally exhibit. They'll kick everyone else out of the nest & take it over as a birthing house. I've noticed very mellow females become the top of the heap when they're pregnant to ensure they get sufficient food & have a safe nest for their young.
You can tell it is Winter as they have "Ear Muff" fur around their ears. Interesting to see making a nest in a bird house this is one way a Hawk or other predators won't get them.
It's so funny how he builds a lil ...tries it out.....na......Tweeks it a lil.....tries it out. Little guys work hard, that's why I feed them , to make their life a lil easier.
@My Backyard Friends I love how he/she sorts out the material around the nest if something doesn’t look right she/he picks it up and moves it somewhere else
This is why I never bag my leaves as the animals and birds use grass clippings and leaves to build nests! All my clippings and leaves are put on my compost pile for free building materials!
Yep! Good on you! That’s very considerate of you. Many people don’t understand the ground cover it produces for wildlife/bugs that are important too. Thanks for watching and the comment. Blessings to you and yours!
@@mybackyardfriends7326 And my compost pile also provides cover for black snakes which help keep the mice population down! Last year I had 3 black snakes take up accommodations in my compost pile. They too are important to the neighborhood!
You are responsible for me saving two baby ground squirrels thank you thank you thank you for your video on feeding baby Squirrel’s! Question: how did you mount your Squirrel camera and what are the dimensions of your Squirrel house reason I ask I’d like to have somebody build me one and mount it so as much info as possible would be greatly appreciated thank you
Awesome to hear! I don't remember approximate dimensions but this video is all about the camera we used and how we we made it! ua-cam.com/video/AuXsZkk9A2A/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!!
I was thinking of getting some squirrel boxes for my yard. Do the squirrels find them right away? Theres a dying tree in my yard with 3 squirrel nests and i want to provide them with alternative housing.
I love this went to UA-cam looking for raccoon house construction all I found was deterrence my thought is build them a home maybe they won't destroy mine how long did it take your squirrels to take to the new house
what kinda of camera did you use? I just bought a nest for a squirrel that I'm pretty sure is pregnant, she comes every day to eat at a birdhouse I set for her, but I'm not certain how to set her house, any recommendations on how should I set it?
I had to come on UA-cam to see how these suckers build a nest because they’ve ripped into my backyard couch set and started taking the cotton filling out and I saw in the trees the filling hanging out from one of their nests
When they are in it they protect it at the opening. But they will leave for periods of time during the day. During the day I’ve seen rando squirrels come in twice now. They don’t stay long and just sniff the place down and skedaddle pretty fast.
It’s so cool to be able to actually see their nesting behaviors. Thanks for posting this. 😊🐿

Love the way you put that, “they know a guy”! 😂😂
I like how s/he takes little test naps throughout the process, then goes and gets more leaves.
"Hmmmm... Still a little chilly. M O R E L E A F!"
Right?! Was too good not to share! Thanks for watching! :)
I lol he climbs in and then grabs some leaves on top of himself like a blanket, i cant 😂😂too cute
And the colour scheme? Er light brown with more light brown I think.
🤭🥰

Do they pair up cause we've sent squirrels arrive more or less in pairs...
Smart strong lovey !

THEN ,JUST LIKE HUMANS MOVING INTO THEIR NEW HOUSE, HE STARTS ARRANGING THINGS SO WILL BE NICE AND COMFY!! SMART SQUIRREL!!!
Aww, it looks like it keeps testing it out, thinking, is this warm enough? Not quite. Need more.
Thanks for watching
You can see the interior design process- "Needs more leaves, yes, definitely more leaves".
Pretty, fun to watch wasn't it? I've been having so much fun watching!
Lol LEAVES!!!!!!!!!
After that first night... yep need more leaves. Got cold. You could tell.
Squirrels just do what they want

I wonder if putting wool will help? He/she was trying to make it extra comfy.

No. There’s been squirrels born in there now. She was just fine. Just chunky from winter
They chew up the wood and the pulp or sawdust and shredded leaves are bedding

Do they instinctively know to build one.

Y cuantas bb tubo
It’s bc there’s mites in that nest.
Will other squirrels stay out of the nest?

Jesus loves you all, repent and believe and be saved, He loves and died for you. AMEN, have a good day :)

Nothing wrong with being different!
Do males decorate differently than females?
Yes the male squirrels like to have big screen TVs installed.
