Also, at 13:04, the transfer attribute node no long exists. Use the sample index and sample nearest node, or sample nearest surface instead. That is also mentioned in the video I shared.
13:04 for those wondering, Transform Attribute Node is replaced in the newer versions by Sample Nearest Surface Node.
All the best, my Blendy Buds
Great work! This is the first video that easily explains how to move instances on surfaces! Been looking for it quite some time! Thank you!
One of the more useful blender tutorials I've seen on the platform, thanks!
I struggled with this for many attempts for some reason..
but in the end i wanted to leave a comment saying thank you Joey! I hope you have the greatest year in 2023 and a 🔥 NYE fren.
thankyou so much, I was trying to do this with random value instead of noise, wasn't able to make the movement smooth
really comprehensive tutorial. thank you!
Hi! I'm a new subscriber. Your knowledge of Blender is very impressive and exceeds mine. But let me correct you on something nonetheless. Subtracting a scalar (that is, a one-dimensional vector) from a three-dimensional vector is a valid operation both in linear algebra and in Blender. That is, when you want to subtract the same value from all the the constituents of a three-vector, you don't need to use a vector math node -- you can use a a simple math node (like in case of position, offset, or RGB values). The same holds for all the other math operations.
Oh my god, thank you for this. 3.0's Geometry Nodes was so infuriating to figure out since 2.93 and 2.92 had different terminologies and branding. I've been trying to fix my hamburger bun in Default Cube's tutorial for a Hamburger and need to share this.
Coffee, Donuts, and Joey Carlino Tutorials FTW 🙌
Small tip: You can type #frame/30 as a driver. ^_^ One less node.
True! I just prefer having a slider so I don't have to retype the division to change the speed
Thank you very much for the excellent tutorial. I need to know how to use the sample index and sample nearest to replace the Transfer attribute for this case. I tried, but all the directions of the cones stayed the same. Would you please show me the proper setup? Thank you very much.
Ok but can grease pencil points be moved? I can't find a way to move them individually like you would with geometry.
Same Question. From 1 face move to one point via curve set. ? :/
Very cool! Thanks!
amazing
Don't know if you're ever going to see a question like this, but if I wanted the instances or particles to "face" whatever direction they are moving in, how would I do that? I'm trying to replicate this effect with bugs, but I don't think it will work if they are sliding all over the place.
Hey Joey. Nice tutorial my dude.
Great geometry nodes effect! Maybe to animate scarabs across surface maybe.
Totally, good idea
The problem that I run into was in B3.1 when I moved the cube into GN workspace it disappeared, then connecting the nodes had no effect on it's reappearance. Is 3.1 different from 3.0 in this.
same here 😕
I'm not sure what you're describing
Works like my idea for creating ivys
gj keep going
A great tutorial, very inspiring. Thank you! In the green germens animation, you have used probably metaballs. I tried to use a metaball as instance object for the "instance on points" node, but it didn't work. How did you do it?
I actually didn't use metaballs. They are just icospheres, but I realized the instances and displaced them with a set position node. That's why they look kind of like blobs
Amazing tutorial...
when i plug the noise from offset into position , the points just appear in a straight line , not a cloud like you demonstrated ~
i have the same problem
did you use vector maths after the noise node or normal maths, cause you need a vector math
Thank you, very good tutorial!
I want to move points on a displaced object (created an extra GN on that object with a Voronoy Texture and a Scene Time node for an animation of that displacement) - but now the distributing points are moving......... just only by the displacement..... How to stop this and fix the distributed points on my object ? Thanks!!!!
If you displace the object and then scatter the points after, that should work I think
@@JoeyCarlino no thats the problem, for 1 frame its okay but when displacing, the distributed points are jumping/ disappearing....
Hi Joey:) really enjoyed this tutorial, many thanks. After processing I started to play with the idea of having the instanced object (cone 6:52) have its own animation, with shape keys for example. Is this possible at all, or does any animation for this instance object need to be done in geometry nodes?
Bro can u plz do a tutorial on face texture animation
this is how you make spiders crawl ahah, can u just use an animated objects as "point" though ?
Yes, I believe so
Hey, my animation is not moving, why do you think?
Solid! Thank you :-)
Hi! Thanks! Please, how to avoid overlapping in 3.1? I tried several options, it didn't work out...
The "distribute points on faces" node has a setting called poisson disc, that let's you determine how close the points will be to eachother
@@JoeyCarlino Hi Joey! Thank you again, I was referring to the second method that doesn't carry that node, or am I mistaken?
Oh, I'm not sure how to do it with that method, I haven't tested it. It would be a hard thing to avoid entirely. Hopefully there will be better ways to do it in the future
Thank you anyway, great tuto!
I'm trying to animate your barbed wires from the tutorial but I can't figure out how :( can you do a tutorial for that? I've already tried all the nodes from this video but I end up fucking up it all
the particles are not connected to the cube like i want it to be.
Hey, Cool Tutorial. How to do metaballs as an instance in this scene?
It's not metaballs, they are just icospheres
@@JoeyCarlino ok... Is it even possible to use metaballs as instances? I saw that they did something in earlier versions of 2.9 ... but for some reason it does not work with them in 3.0.
I don't think so, but I only tried once. As far as I know there isn't a way to use metaballs.
@@JoeyCarlino It's possible... but in 2.9 ua-cam.com/video/LN0Mwj7ZdWY/v-deo.html&ab_channel=WeilLabed
Those features are still there in 3.0, so if it works in that video, then you can probably do it that same way.
