    And the numbers (well, calculations):
To determine the amount of border fabric to start with:
(width of your quilt top) + (width of the border fabric x2) + 4-6 inches
(length of your quilt top) + (width of the border fabric x2) + 4-6 inches
    To make your markings:
Start from center of your border strip. Measure out half of your top width and then in 1/4 inch to make your markings on top.

Courtney, you did good. You two got the all the information recorded clearly and with humor. You also let us know how to manage when things do not work right the first time. It hardly ever does when you have to do the same thing four times in a row. That comes under the things Grandma taught me as a child. One will not work the first time especially if you are tired or in a hurry.

I haven't done a mitered border for a long time and needed a refresher (truth be told re-learn). I looked at several videos, found them confusing or missing info. This was the absolute best - covered every question I had. Guess I'll have to do it now!!! (-:

Thanks, Courtenay! You’ve made this technique so much more approachable, and you’re so fun to watch. You’ve got an amazing personality (as do all the women at MSQC), and I never feel like a mistake is more than a learning experience when I watch these tutorials. Have a wonderful week, and I hope the heat abates a bit. We are going to hit 105° here in Texas this week. 🥵

@Susan Mazzanti It’s a typical summer here in Texas with a few 100+ days in the forecast. We will try to keep it from y’all, though, because I know heat and southern humidity are a pretty uncomfortable combo.

Hope you’re staying cool and enjoying some quilting and crafting.

It rained yesterday off and on all day. Today the real high is about 97 and there are still puddles in my yard. I lived in Alamo, Texas for awhile and it never felt like this. I could stay in the shade with a fan and cool off. Here the sweat runs in little rivers and you can hardly breath. This is like Laredo when it rains. I will make it all right though. I was born in this state and I will make it.

You keep saying measure in three places and a couple times you said "add the measurements together" but you never actually said to get the "AVERAGE" of those measurements. Very important to know. This is how I was taught to do borders. Works everytime.
This is not my preferred method for mitering borders but the great thing about quilting is there are many ways to accomplish our quilting goals.

When she measures the fabric top, 6" in, bottom, 6" in and in the middle, she says "Get your measurement". Don't you have to 'average' these numbers to get your final number? Otherwise, where are you going to "Get your measurement"?
