And the numbers (well, calculations):
To determine the amount of border fabric to start with:
(width of your quilt top) + (width of the border fabric x2) + 4-6 inches
(length of your quilt top) + (width of the border fabric x2) + 4-6 inches
To make your markings:
Start from center of your border strip. Measure out half of your top width and then in 1/4 inch to make your markings on top.
Great tutorial! Sometimes I think the only thing keeping us sane through the pandemic is the steady stream of brilliant tutorials from you great ladies of MSQC. We all love you gals!
Amen
Courtney, you did good. You two got the all the information recorded clearly and with humor. You also let us know how to manage when things do not work right the first time. It hardly ever does when you have to do the same thing four times in a row. That comes under the things Grandma taught me as a child. One will not work the first time especially if you are tired or in a hurry.
I love the idea of making a "strip set" of borders! What great tips today. Thank you!
I am a new quilter, having completed six easy quilts so far. This is wonderful! Thank you so much for this tutorial. BTW, your videos have helped me with all of my quilts in one way or the other. Thank you so very much!
@Courtenay, you bust my gut! I find myself smiling during your tutorials. So much FUN!
Thank you Cortney, you explain so well. Lord. I am still struggling with borders,,,but I will get to this, thanks to your clear instruction.
I haven't done a mitered border for a long time and needed a refresher (truth be told re-learn). I looked at several videos, found them confusing or missing info. This was the absolute best - covered every question I had. Guess I'll have to do it now!!! (-:
Great tips. Very helpful. Thank you
Hello Courtenay, Your Big mitered border came out Just Perfect, because you was taking your time & giving us your tips when pinning & lining it up 😂💙 Erica x
Missed Misty & Jake but absolutely loved Courtney.. I love doing mitered corners on my quilts.. Lots of love from London UK xxx Nadia
Such fun to watch! More Courtney please !
I’ve never done mitered borders, only mitered bindings. This was interesting. Thank you. You did a nice job.
Kimme Nuckles me too
Have to try
I had never made mitered borders and i tried and tried without success UNTIL i watched this video and the lightbulb went off and the first attempt was a success. Thank You so much!!!
Just a great lesson! I’m going to add 3 borders to a Queen size top and then miter all the corners at one time. I THINK I can do this!!
Excellent tutorial, thank you.
Thanks, Courtenay! You’ve made this technique so much more approachable, and you’re so fun to watch. You’ve got an amazing personality (as do all the women at MSQC), and I never feel like a mistake is more than a learning experience when I watch these tutorials. Have a wonderful week, and I hope the heat abates a bit. We are going to hit 105° here in Texas this week. 🥵
Please keep the heat. It's wet over here in Arkansas and I don't want to live in a sana.
@Susan Mazzanti It’s a typical summer here in Texas with a few 100+ days in the forecast. We will try to keep it from y’all, though, because I know heat and southern humidity are a pretty uncomfortable combo.
😉
Hope you’re staying cool and enjoying some quilting and crafting.
It rained yesterday off and on all day. Today the real high is about 97 and there are still puddles in my yard. I lived in Alamo, Texas for awhile and it never felt like this. I could stay in the shade with a fan and cool off. Here the sweat runs in little rivers and you can hardly breath. This is like Laredo when it rains. I will make it all right though. I was born in this state and I will make it.
Those quilts were beautiful!
Thanks Courtenay, I have attempted to do mitered borders and they were OK, not museum, but OK for the grandkids to toss around the house. :)
Courtenay, you rock! I love watching your videos. You are so fun.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! This was a great video on the mitered corners. I've never seen the marking of the border before sewing it on.
This was extremely helpful....you helped me do it on my first try. I did a 2 stripe border.... Missouri Star Rocks !!!
Hello, I am totally new Beginner to Quilting 😋 so this is very helpful for me 😁 thank you 💙 Erica x
Starting my first quilt and I am glad I found you before I got started!
loved this thank you Courtney and misty - really useful
I’m a newbie in quilting so..learning how to just mitering binding was an ordeal for me, but....I’m u-tubing a lot of video and learning from different quilting, and just now learning about the mitering the border material in interesting, so thank you ladies very much. Y’all really help to teach us what we’re not sure of when sewing.
I have never done mitered corners. But I love them just didn't know how. I love the video. You did a great job.
Thank you so much for sharing, I'm new to quilting and had no idea how to mitre corners. Fabulous tutorial very explicit. Xx
Thank you so much!
OhMyStars! This was a perfect tutorial!
How did I miss this? Wonderful!
Great information Courtenay and, if you do have to rip your stitches out, what happens in the sewing room stays in the sewing room. 😁
This is a different method and looks much easier than the way I learned. Eager to try this method.
Never done it but doing it now on my present quilt. So you are showing as I'm doing.
Great session! Wish town was open ☺️
Thank you for such a great video. I did not know about the quarter inch markings. This will definitely help.
I love the look of mitered borders, but haven’t been really successful making them. This video has been very helpful. Also you are fun to watch!
Thank you! You made that look so easy and I am much less intimidated to try mitered corners.
Hello from New Mexico!
Great timing. I have a project that needs mitered corners. Now I can try it.
Loved this!
I have been afraid of mitered corners. However, you made it look fairly easy. Also, many thanks for the free download Evergreen Farm pattern.
Tres bien expliqué et compréhensible Félicitations
Courtney thanks for the awesome tutorial. Maybe MSQC should do three tutorials a week.
Hello from Richmond, KY
I did my first mitered corners yesterday. I wish I could post a picture thank you!
You keep saying measure in three places and a couple times you said "add the measurements together" but you never actually said to get the "AVERAGE" of those measurements. Very important to know. This is how I was taught to do borders. Works everytime.
This is not my preferred method for mitering borders but the great thing about quilting is there are many ways to accomplish our quilting goals.
I wish this lady would do more tutorials
Hello from Savannah, Georgia
Thank you Courtenay, I have done mitered borders before, but I learnt a lot by watching you doing yours. Next quilt will have mitered borders, YAY
Keeping looping back to 56 second intro
Playback intro is looping. ☹️ Oh, I waited through one more and then it started. Yay!
😃
Thanks for the heads up, Kelly! We've got the intro trimmed down and that should be up soon!
Have never done mitered borders
Morning from Hamilton nz
Awesome!
I often miter corners but I still usually watch a you-tube before I do because It's easy to make a mistake.
Great!
Description says vinyl pouch?
So on the binding with the three different fabrics, you're adding the extra 8" right? This is my first time doing this and a new quilter. I'm excited about how it's going to turn out. Hopefully it will turn out right.
Thank you for this I have an unfinished project with mitered borders because I’m afraid
Playback not working😒
Ps labeled pouch with misty until pops up name changes n no pay ability😉
Thank you, surely you add and then divide Bt three to get your border size?
Thank you Courtenay. Very engaging tutorial; you are both very relaxed and easy to follow. Best wishes from Australia
Now would you mitre your binding the same way or is that done differently
Hello from Michigan
I have and I can mitre corners, I usually don’t.
My borders usually follow the pattern picture.
I know this is a year and a half old, but, maybe someone who has tried it will see it. How hard is it to miter a plaid? Is it even possible? Would you have to have a lot of extra fabric to try to get the plaid to meet precisely?
Do you cut length of fabric
I was wondering, what is the quilt on the wall behind you?
That’s a Missouri Star quilt. The April Triple Play shows basic construction and some variations of this pattern.
All the math seems quite involved. What would happen if we cut the strips 4 or five inches more on both sides?
When she measures the fabric top, 6" in, bottom, 6" in and in the middle, she says "Get your measurement". Don't you have to 'average' these numbers to get your final number? Otherwise, where are you going to "Get your measurement"?
Wierd.. the notification says vinyl zipper pouch.. then the video says mitered corners. Hmm I thought I was going crazy for a minute! Lol
We'll just say we had some technical difficulties on the day of the Live! 😁
I haven’t tried to miter strips and don’t have clue how to do this so I am watching attentively…..seems like it is quite complicated.
I loved your tutorial thank you kindly 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 IM FROM MISSOURI AND I DONT KNOW IF YOU ARE or not ...BUT CAN YOU ALL CALL Missouri..MISSOURI not MISSOURA😊🤗🤨😕🙄🤷🏻♀️? PLEASE! Why on earth does anyone call our state MISSOURA? Heavens i dont have many pet peeves but LORDY THIS MAKES ME CRAZY THAT PEOPLE SAY OUR STATE THAT WAY...OH, and forgive me for fussing when you so generously showed us this......ahhhhhhh...but i cannot be the only person this drives nuts😂😂😂😂😂
Linda Gillespie, I’m pretty sure it’s just an accent. My friend grew up in KY and she talks exactly like Courtney. They also say, “Lou-a-ville” instead of “Louie-Ville,” (spelled “Louisville”).
I was born in NorthWest Missouri not too far from Hamilton and we always said MISSOURA. Other parts of Missouri apparently pronounce it differently. Please don't call people out for their regional accents.
There must be an easier way to do this
Have done some... sometimes successful, sometimes not.
नमो राघवाय🙏🙏💐💐
Confusing
Wrong thumbprint on this video
Doing the three rows is scary as hell…..
Well I am a learner and I have found your may of explaining this method to be very confusing. Perhaps those who have quilted for a long time will understand your instructions better. 😞
Very hard to understand. Sounds like she's just throwing out numbers.... I think it's a good idea to remember that your talking to beginners most of the time. People who know how already are busy sewing..... I love Jenny's videos cuz it sounds like she's addressing me personally, taking care to hit all the tips most experienced sewists take for granted.
Totally confusing explanation
