This is a clip from award-winning quilter Winnie Fleming's online class, Finishing School: Better Borders. Why take this class? Students rave:
"'m a long time quilter ( 30+) years. Have made many quilts -- enough to really appreciate how borders can make or break a quilt. Using border prints has always been a "hit or miss" process for me. But I plan to make several samples to stamp this technique into my brain ..... I never realized to cut border print fabric on rectangle quilts on warp and weft of fabric."

Winnie Fleming came to our guild in Ft. Worth, TX many years ago and I just loved her. Her teaching style is clear, her personality sweet and funny, and I immediately signed up for her class. I had learned a great deal from her presentation at the guild meeting but the class was gold! I was a fairly new quilter and the techniques and formulas she gave us were truly "Laminating" worthy. My sheets are still in pristine condition and I still have to pull them out and refer to them often. And I also bought 2 of your Craftsy classes! Thanks Winnie!

I Love how the table is big enough for the machine and laying everything out next to it. I got to get that.

I finally found this after seeing it a while ago. I tried this method after watching the video the first time and it worked perfectly. Wanted to refresh my memory but couldn't remember who had the video. Found it and so glad I did. This method is so easy and you're not messing with all the extra fabric at the corners like during other methods. Thank you Winnie!

Thank you Winnie, I have two quilts that need mitered borders and this sounds like it will be a lot easier than the folding method. BTW, your ring is absolutely gorgeous!

Great video demonstration Winnie! Thank you for posting how you use the Corner Marking Tool. I also use the Jinny Beyer corner tool - many angles on her tool.

instead if 'whacker' press with a wooden clapper, can make one from a wooden plaque from Hobby Lobby, a handle & some glue, flattens seam for 4-6 inches

Anyone using this step-by-step to cut your borders - BE CAREFUL! The description of the measurements to cut are very confusing for how long to cut the length of the strips. At 3:09 she says to cut the strip the calculated length PLUS "a little longer than the width of the strip." I took this to mean I was to add the width of my strip to the calculation - which is wrong.I couldn't correct it because it was already ruined by cutting at a 45 degree angle. I gave up and just sewed straight borders.

I must say I agree with you. The measurements were confusing and I was worried about the same thing that happened to you. Kimberly Jolly of Fat Quarter Shop has an excellent mitered border tutorial. Very clear measurements and cutting instructions.

Without a doubt, a seasoned and talented quilter, BUT, this explanation and video is much to mathematical and confusing. There are some good tips along the way, BUT, check other videos, mitering corners doesn't have to feel like rocket science.

Why did you say to add the width of the strip to your average measure - 1/4 "? In the demo the width was not added?

I'm new to sewing borders with mitered corners. I understand how to do these steps. How do I bring the border around to the back?

This is not useful to someone like me who is just learning mitered corners for Borders. I mean, who is going to miter a corner on a single block?
