hello - I learned about your site via Daily Italian Word. Ho quasi tutto obligato il italiano che ho appreso quarante anni fa, but want to start picking it up again. I taught ESL to adults for 30 years and my motto in the classroom was DON'T PANIC, which always made them laugh, but when you're scared, the brain literally cannot absorb new information. Thank you for the insights, and I look forward to continuing my viaggio in Italiano!

The correct sentence is "I CENTESIMI pesano poi IN tasca". Welcome to my country!

When entering in a new situation I will always prepare a framework for what I might say - my first first sentence I might practice to myself, since this'll be the one to get the ball rolling - after that I will rely on the framework of question, statements, answers that I've worked out for some of the possible ways the conversation might go. There will always be curved balls though, and not knowing how to handle those can induce panic. My strategy is to then say - mi scusi, non capisco bene, sto ancora studiando la lingua italiana - it's usually enough to get most native speakers to repeat the statement/question, and some people will even slow down when they repeat it.

min. 07:44 - you are extremely clever, but, as a mother tongue Italian speaker, I'd rather say: 1)"Ecco venti centesimi, perché, sai, i centesimi pesano NELLA tasca" or 2) "Ecco venti centesimi, perché, sai, i centesimi APPESANTISCONO le tasche". What is the difference? 1) "pesano" is used as an intransitive verb which can't be followed by a direct object; 2) "appesantiscono" is used as a transitive causative verb which is followed by a direct object. You made "a mix of the two", so to say.... As for the singular/plural, it's just a nuance of lesser relevance.

Thanks Tom, I need to try to remember everything I've forgotten this past few years but looking forward to visiting Italy again in January and hopefully, with Melloni in charge, the Italians won't bring back the pointless lockdowns and mandates. Nice to see hardly anyone in masks in this video.

Tom, you’re so good in doing this clip! Talking for almost 15 minutes in such an environment where there were many people walking toward you or passing you by and you can keep talking and explaining is truly remarkable.😊

Buongiorno signor Tom. Bravissimo video. I just returned on a long connecting flight from two weeks (due settimane) in bella Italia. For two weeks I interacted with some many embracing kind people (gente italiani). Non parla lingua Italiana molto forte come lei, ma sempre provo dire con tutti gente. You (voi) have to just relax, don't worry about making un piccolo sbaglio, and give it a try.
Start with the intro: give it a "buon giorno /buona serra signore". They seem to like up when we try. They instantly recognize you are not a local. You speak a bit more in italiano, with a smile in your voice, and they return return the smile. I am no pro, but I heard certain more than a dozen times, from gente italiani, that I speak Italiano molto bravo (I know it is not absolutely true), but it helps develop a dialogue. I also give the woman that appear under 30-35 the "signorina". They seem to light up, and say grazie, ma non ancora signorina. It is all just fun. If I get stuck I say "come se dice in italiano", or che significa di buon vento, etc, etc, to keep the dialogue rolling. We traveled down to Puglia and very far South to Lecce, and more. There are far less locals there that understand inglese. It makes it great fun at ristoranti, bars, regozzi, eccetera. We enrolled in a pasta making class at a signora's casa. We made cavatelli, and orechetti, then we cooked it together and ate together, but more importantly we spoke together in Italiano, and she taught us about local history and the history of food products, wines, olives, grapes, and more.
Fun fun fun. I still need to unpack my suitcase, but I can't wait to go back.
P.S. Don't be afraid to make a piccollo sbaglio. If you have good karma they love to help you. (As you see, I make plenty of mistakes, here, but I have not studied 12-16 years of Italian grammar. Go for it.
