- Hey guys, what's going on? We have got a new knife and it is in this box right here, brand new from Microtech. We are going to be taking a look today at the Combat Troodon gen 3 Combat Troodon. I thought the old Combat Troodon was cool, but there were some things about it that I didn't love. I didn't really love the styling; I didn't love the ribbing on the front. It was a cool knife; it has been carried by a bunch of people, been loved by a bunch of people, and I am not taking away from that at all. I think it's great. I don't have one, but I've handled a few of them, and there's a chance that I may get one in the future, but it just didn't get me as excited as this new one. When I saw the Gen 3 was coming out, I looked at it and thought, 'Yeah, I got to have one of those,' and now I do.
So, without further ado, let's open up the box and take a look at this thing. Papers, there's a sticker in there. I'm sure there's a sticker in there. I haven't checked, but I think there's a sticker in there; there usually is. Caution: sharp edge. I would hope so. And here it is, in all of its glory, the new Combat Troodon. Go ahead and pop this thing open, take a look. Stonewash blade, and it is sharp, so that was an accurate statement on the little yellow sticker there.
Okay, a couple of things to note about this knife right off the bat, before we get into... well, you know what, we're just going to go ahead and get into it. You'll notice something different here, that really separates this from the pack as far as Microtech's stuff goes: the hardware. It is not the... I don't see any triangles; it is not proprietary hardware. We have got torx; we've got four of them here, and we got this one on the back for the pocket clip. The pocket clip, by the way, which is ambidextrous, so that's nice. It is also... let's see if I can get this to focus... it is also milled titanium, I believe. It's titanium, milled, and it's got that tungsten carbide ball bearing, which is just really, really cool. I really like that feature.
If you look just north of the pocket clip, you see the glass breaker, just stab, no box there. You see the glass breaker, which, if it'll focus, you'll notice is very low profile, which reminds me kind of of the... reminds me a little of the SOCOM Elite, with that super low-profile glass breaker. You almost wouldn't see it if you weren't looking for it, and that is a really cool feature. I like having a glass breaker, but I don't like having a giant thing sticking out of my pocket that's going to poke me in the hand, so that's a nice feature.
And the blade, of course, is great. You got those fun little holes in the blade. I think it would have been cool if they had fluted this, like they did on the Scarab 2, and a couple of other models. I know some of the newer Combat Troodons also have the fluting on the barrel, not the barrel, on the blade, but this one doesn't. I don't know if any of the Gen 3s do yet, I'm sure they will at some point. This obviously is the combo edge, so full serrated on top, plain edge on the bottom, best of both worlds. A lot of cutting surface there, and those teeth look dangerous, some good-looking serration.
Yeah, so let's take a look, and of course, the blade is M390 MK, which you know and love from the Stitch, the MSI, and now of course, all of this gen 3 stuff that they've got coming out is all going to be in that M390 MK, which is a really, really good steel. I've used it quite a bit, not on this knife, obviously, but I have had experience using that M390 MK, and it is super tough, super corrosion-resistant.
Let's take a look at this hardware here and see what we're working with. I think that we are going to be... yep, so we've got four T8s on the front of the handle, and then this deal on the back here, I think, is going to be... I don't know exactly what that is. It's... I don't know, T25, T30? I'd have to get my other tools, which I'm not going to do because I'm filming right now, but you got a big old Torx there on the back. The important thing here is that you can take this knife apart if you need to service it, if you... I don't know. I don't know why you'd want to take your knife apart; there are a couple of different reasons you would, and you can. Now you can absolutely take this knife apart, which is really nice. Without... you could take the other ones apart, but you'd have to get the special hardware.
Looking at the switch, oh, what is that? What is going on in here? Oh, it's the crud cutter, designed to keep debris out of the way. So, when you're operating the switch, even if it gets a little grimed up, you'll still have that nice smooth contact surface, metal on metal or metal on anodized metal.
Thank you for making this video. I was concerned when I got mine (no visible serial number, no microtech logo on the blade, just date of creation on the clip.) Mine is this very same model in navy blue. Thankfully identical to yours.
Best review I’ve seen on this so far very detailed! Have one coming in next week 🎉
Hope you enjoy it! Certainly a lot of improvements on the last generation. If you think of it holler back once you get it and let me know what you think of that action!
Thanks for watching!
Here from MCs giveaway! Look forward to seeing you grow! 🤙
Thank you for the support!
Nice review. MC brought me here. Your content will keep me coming back
Thank you so much for the support!
Great review, I just ordered the same one. After being very impressed with my Hera II I really wanted this one with the combo blade.
You’ll be pleased. The combo is sick. Really the only d/e I get excited about.
MC asked us to help…. Nice video… I’ll keep watching.
Thank you. Your support means a lot!
Keep doing what you love bro!
Thanks for the support!
That is sick!! Well done review too
I want the straight edge one so bad i can taste it Great video, and i gave you a sub.
Thanks for watching and subscribing! They’re coming out with a bunch of cool new configurations now and the stock is definitely going up.
Greetings from the MC 400k Spectacular!! 🗡️
Glad to have you!
Also, got a drop point instead of DE, i have several other Fairburn Sykes style knives if i need to poke something particularly well.
I've been EDCing Ultratechs for several years, and just got a Dirac Delta. Maybe I'll try a new generation CT eventually. Customer service seems willing to clean and sharpen for free after the knives are no longer functional, so I'm not sure I'd want to do it myself.
They are willing to, yes! Many people, including myself, are just too impatient to wait 6-8 weeks to get their knives back lol.
@@CuttingEdgeEDC They've done it free for me. I don't know how often they'd do it though. Waiting isn't so bad if you have more than one.
The appearance of the knife is nice, but why didn't you shake the barrel of the knife while shooting the review video? Is there any gap when opening and closing? Does the saw part really work etc. you have never tested it?
There is no saw on this knife. What are you talking about?
I have searched every where and can't find any body who has these in stock. Do you know where I can purchase one? Thanks...
Unfortunately they’re sold out right now. They can be pre-ordered at Knife Center.
Nice review. Very detailed!
Question: when the blade is extended, does the blade have a SOLID feel or is there some wiggle?
Only the typical play you’d expect from any other OTF that’s not labeled “zero blade play”
Very solid for an OTF, but some play is to be expected.
Nice review! Now when will it come out in different colors? I want a purple one
Just now seeing this comment: it’s happening now!🤙🏼
I like the new design, hated the old one. I'll wait for a single edge though.
The single edge is gonna be awesome. Thanks for watching!
Got both still prefer the gen 2 my gen 3 has been a nightmare
Nice knife bro 😎 MC sent me
What does the fluting on the blade do? Is it functional or only for looks? Great video!
It definitely looks cool! Its purpose, though, is to allow the knife to be fired underwater. Thanks for watching!
It's a fuller and it is for weight reduction, just looks cool with the holes in it. If there was fluting, if would be at the base of the blade as it is on the Scarab, which is there to help it fire underwater. You can still fire a Microtech OTF underwater, and the Scarab model is designed for it.
To add onto the previous commenter, those Holes in the back of the chassis are ports. Designed specifically for water evacuation for opening / closing underwater. The fuller plays no role in achieving this.
Nice video.what is price of this knife how one can get?
The price is something like $450. They’re pretty widely available now from Microtech dealers.
You seem to like the autos.
I do! I actually don’t carry them as often as the folders, but I am a fan.
My engraving is crispy as fuck, but i also have a knife that was made 05.2024 so maybe the more current releases arent having that issue
It seems like they remedied this gripe on the newer runs.
Nice video.
Don’t quote me but I don’t think the Gen 3s are laser etched…
Yessir I believe that’s correct. Thank you for watching!
👍👍
All I want to see in the combat troodon is a thicker/wider blade. That’s all
The width of the blade isn’t something that stood out to me, but I agree it is a little anemic proportionally.

$470 for a knife is a bit much, if Microtech would come down $50 on all their models they would be great knives, but with the quality control of their knives in the gutter and their incredible steep prices, Microtech really isnt worth it anymore.
If you think the price is too high you’re right, buy something in your budget. I think Microtech does a great job and personally don’t mind the price tag.
I like the clip…idk not a fan of the scales tho
I like the understated design of the body, but am eagerly awaiting the color variants. The minimalist design in black doesn’t really get me excited.
@@CuttingEdgeEDC what do you think will happen to the version 1 secondary market?
I feel like this video could have been 5 minutes long and covered the same material. What viewers want more than some dude talking for 14 minutes is putting this knife to the test and comparing it to its competitors.
@@Philmoscowitz No problem, there are plenty of videos like that. Go watch those.
@@CuttingEdgeEDC Lol
