The amount of talent shown in this video is crazy. All are top notch artists from many different eras & genres of music. Don't think something like this will ever happen again. Sadly quite a few artists that are featured are no longer with us.

When this premiered I was in front of the TV with popcorn. Now at 52 I cry when Michael and Stevie sing and I'm so touched by Ray Charles 🤧. Unbelievable amount of talent in one room. Still gives me goose bumps and takes me back to my childhood. 💚🌎
Not sure if anybody else has mentioned this, but... they recorded this in ONE night. It is just amazing that they could as you pointed out, put just the right voices together in a few hours. All the proceeds from this went to famine relief in Africa. There was a horrible drought, especially in Ethiopia, people were dying in unbelievable numbers. You are right.... I doubt there will ever be another musical event like this, and hopefully there will never be another natural disaster like the one that spawned this.
They did it after one of the music awards. Michael Jackson planned on a few to do the song and others caught wind and showed up. I just seen a documentary on this a few months ago. It was really interesting.

We need entertainers to come together today like they did back then to try to put out a message to bridge the divide in the world right now so we can unify through positivity.
There will never be another experience like this again. I remember when this song came out it was huge. All singing live and no autotune even though it didn't exist back then.
U should see the videos that show how they put that song together. Really amazing. They were all so kind and so patient. They helped each other find the right harmonies and runs for their parts. It's incredible to see.

All their schedules were so tight they had little time to come together for this video. It was a miracle they all got together to make this video as many of them showed up late with limited practice which truly reveals their musical talent. Watch them reading their music sheet for them to know when they are to sing. This is a totally amazing video because they got together for a couple practice sessions before the recording. As quick as they got together they quickly departed to get back to their appointed schedule.
It was after the Grammy's that year I believe so they were all in town. I think Madonna was on tour, and Prince didnt want to do it

Uh-huh, that's the great producer "Q", Mr. Quincy Jones (Rashida's Dad) at the front, and he placed each legendary voice into their perfect pocket to bring life to this song. Wiki Q who also produced Frank Sinatra, MJ's "Thriller" and so much more. He is amazing!
Been a great song from the first showing and every year it’s been played since … Rest In Peace to the many that has passed over time … blessed be the survivors I’m 66 years old and it’s a love hate relationship not from the song but from the government that screwed the world up in the first place !!
I was about 21 when this came out and it was incredible to see so many artists at once. This one was to help people during the African famine. Listening to these always make me choke up. It reminds me of when we all thought we were doing something to help others. Buying the CD funded these organizations. I don't know if we actually made a difference or not but, seeing all these superstars involved made us all feel like we were all part of the same effort.
There were a few of these mega-songs at the time: "Do They Know It's Christmas" mostly British artists to help the African famine (this song inspired 'We Are the World'), "Sun City" to protest South African apartheid, "That's What Friends Are For" for AIDS research, and a number of others. These were all issues that we felt the politicians weren't doing enough for so we had to. It made us feel like we were doing something important.

You need to give props to Quincy Jones for the arrangement. Very talented at what he does. He's the one conducting, btw. His most famous song in modern times is Soul Bossa Nova, the theme to Austin Powers.

Band aid started in the UK , and Bob Geldorf travelled to the USA for the Grammies in 1983 and met Quincy Jones who wrote this with Micheal Jackson . They had this song and invited everyone to do this song directly after the grammies , it took one night to record this
This song makes my best swell with emotion and tears roll down my face. An absolute army of talent in that room with no egos, just a common cause and the willingness to help! Genre, skin color, religion, age... none of it mattered! It makes me so angry that when there is a crisis such as tornadoes, earthquakes, or hurricanes, people don't hesitate to help their fellow man. But the minute things return to a semblance of normalcy, they go back to treating those very same people poorly. We've shown we can do better. I just wish we'd find a way to keep it that way!
I was around 14 when this magic happened. This song was played all over the World. I remember the day of 28th of March of the 1996, like over 6.000 radio stations all over the planet, played the song simultaneously at 10:15am. I remember in schools (Italy) when they told us that the song would have been played all over the planet and it is been so... It has been the biggest moment of unification that I ever lived in my life. Something that is just utopia, a dream, at the day of today... I'm so glad that I'm coming from that era. Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie materialized a masterpiece that night in L.A. This song has been made for charity. All those superstars went for free to spend the night in a studio to record the song. Some of them arrived there straight from the Americans awards etc .. They all left just when the job was done in the morning. No financial compensation for that long amazing job that they did. A support to Africa, that's it. There is a fantastic documentary (presented by Jane Fonda) that shows that magical night. Whoever is attracted by this song and wants to know more, I suggest to watch that documentary.

It was the idea of legendary singer, humanitarian, and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte after he saw news images of the suffering going on in Africa because of the famine. Belafonte sought out music manager Ken Kragen about his idea. Instead of going with a benefit concert, they worked out the idea for getting together a lot of top artists to come and do parts in one song that could be released as a single. The goal was to spread awareness about the serious need and raise funds to help feed the people directly who were starving.
Harry and Ken engaged the help of Quincy Jones to organize the project, gather the artists, and produce the record. Quincy did a great job getting so many to contribute their talents to the cause. He knew most of the artists would be in town for the American Music Awards, and he invited them to come to the loaned studio immediately after the awards show finished. So, instead of going to the usual parties after such a show, they came and sang their hearts out.
Every single one of them did their part, whether it was a solo line or singing in the chorus. Any of those in the chorus easily would have been great in solo parts. People like Smokey Robinson, or The Pointer Sisters, the other Jacksons, Bette Midler, and even Harry Belafonte himself! All amazing talents. Every single person participating definitely had a one-of-a-kind voice.
Singers like Steve Perry, Tina Turner, Al Jarreau, Darryl Hall (John, his partner in Hall and Oates, was in the chorus), Ray Charles, Bruce, James Ingram, Dionne Warwick, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Cyndi Lauper, Kenny Rogers, and the rest... immediately recognizable voices.
The whole group stayed through the night to complete the recording session. Quincy was the one who chose who would sing what parts. @Vlogging With Greg ...You noted how perfect the order of the voices was, as Quincy matched in thoughtful contrast who would follow whom.
MJ and Lionel Ritchie were given the task of writing the song. They all worked very hard and gave their best. By the way, the USA for Africa project started with one song as a single, but it actually developed into an album, which raised additional monies and awareness. The recognition factor of Michael's involvement certainly helped in the publicity presented to the public, but so did the involvement of each of the other top-tier shining stars. The focus was on the humanitarian effort, though... not to have any artist take the spotlight. Quincy put a sign over the audio entrance, clearly directing that egos were to be left at the door.
The resulting effort of all working together was an anthem of hearts heard 'round the world.
Rest in Peace, MJ, and all those who've since passed, such as Quincy, Kenny, June Pointer, James Ingram, Ray, bless their souls, and others including the great number of hungry people in Africa who had suffered and died in the famine that prompted this special gathering.

The time from writing the song, to getting each singer and who would sing what line must have been a LOT of work, love and commitment to create what they did. A powerful song that should be played everyday as a reminder "We Are the World". What we do and need to do depends on us for the children today and future generations to come.
What makes this song even more powerful is that nobody knew what was going on other than they were invited to do a Collab with MJ and Lionel as they walked through the door they were handed thier scripts and given roughly 5min to read it then they did it in one take

Kenny loggins everybody and their mama was on this. ♥️ And this was the only time they ever done anything like this nobody's ever duplicated it but the European country I forget which one it was they had the British singers doing do they know it's Christmas time feed the world feed the world. I love the insane amount of talent that made up this ensemble crew. Different music genres and vocal sounds came together so cohesively. I also really love the two versions of this song that were done when the earthquake struck Haiti, including a Spanish language version titled Somos El Mundo.

I had suggestedyou watch the making of this. It's long but it's awesome! They did this after an awards show and worked through the night. This made a huge impact on me as a young person.
The pairing of Stevie Wonder and the Boss was one of the many genius move by Quincy Jones. He made them all check their egos at the door. Truly a masterpiece.

What is more amazing about this video is that many of these musicians showed up late and are reading the music sheets as they sing because they only had time to practice two to three times as a group.
This took all night to record. The reason he voices are placed so well is thanks to the editing. I'm very sure that there is much, much more footage than is shown on the video. I love that you recognize so many of the singers. People of my boomer generation can name 90% of them.

I was a kid when this first aired on TV, and to this day have never heard anything else like it. Some special about the 80s, sadly a lot of them are gone now.
So many singers and from so many different genres. And all in the same room at the same time. This is a piece of artwork. Now days they would record all of them separately and put the voices together. The singers would never even see each other. These singers must have developed a special bond through this project. It is so special. So glad we have this. I was just thinking that we have already lost several of them.

I was a teenager in the 80’s and I will say, “my generation had the best and the greatest.” We caused the great change in music, theater, and movies. Michael Jackson is, will, and forever be missed.
I still have my USA for Africa sweatshirt. My granddaughters tried to snag it but it is a part of my history ( there is no way it would fit now!).
This song still make me want to cry whenever I hear it.
I remember growing up as a kid in the 80's getting to listen to these legends seemingly everyday. This song brings back so many great fond memories of a time where the world seemed more peaceful and wonderful to live in.

I love the amount of talent in this video. There are two other versions that were recorded when that devastating earthquake hit Haiti, including a Spanish language version titled Somos El Mundo. I recommend those two versions, as well.

Ah, Takes you back to the 80's! Done right after the Grammy's met at a studio No After Grammy parties. This was back when the musicians did duets, Wrote songs for each other. More of close Knit community than you see now. Heck, In Michael Jackson's BEAT IT Eddie Van Halen (hard rock) did a solo for him. Michael wanted Eddies sound in that song at some point.

So many Legends came together for a great cause and this generation was blessed with so many amazing iconic singers. No one will ever see this kind of talent ever again! We were so blessed with this much talent back then. Sadly all of them are not with us anymore may they all R.I.P.
