This was so special, it made you feel good to listen to them. Made you want to do something to help. Times do change unfortunately. Thanks for the great reaction as always!
Only the incomparable Quincy Jones could ru the helm on this!
@@irisshort202 you are absolutely right!
Very relevant today as well…..
When people ask when was America great... well this is one of the moments from the 80's that made us all feel pride in helping someone in need.
@@Luckydraw4me 3 years after the 1980's recession. yet we still gave what we could.
I've said this numerous times. You wonder how they got all these legends together? Who in their right mind would say NO to Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie? Those 3 put this together! There was even a sign above the studio door that said "Check your egos at the door!". This was about helping the needy people of Africa. No one person was bigger than the cause or this song! We will never see the likes of this again in our lifetime! And that's a shame. Great reaction video Adogg! You gained a subscriber here.
It is sad that we will never see this again. I was ten around this time and very sheltered life, but it tore my heart out too see the starving ppl walking skeletons is what they were. Heartbreaking ×10

Thanks for this very helpful comment. Non-American here so I know a lot of them but not all.
Thanks!
I still get the thrill of watch it watching someone who hasn’t heard it before. It’s such an amazing song and the best artist of all time. Sad to say this will never happen again in the same way. They cared about the what the song was written for and that was to help the world but all get people to realise that we are all the same and we are all people and we should all love each other and care about each other. That’s the message
25 million dollars was raised from this song for Africa. It was truly amazing.
This is why the 70s,80' and 90's were golden for music . Look at all these artist..
The epic music era.Singers did music then, and singers do video now.
and these are not even 50% madonna etc is missing
Even the back-up chorus is full of legends. People who DIDN'T have solos include: The Pointer Sisters, Harry Belafonte, Bette Midler, Smokey Robinson, 5 Jacksons, Sheila E. and a whole bunch more. This was quite a moment in music history. Glad you liked it.
Actually Smokey was slotted for a solo but had to leave after the chorus due to a family emergency

Cyndi Lauper is one of the most respected but somehow still underrated singers of all time. She is amazing. Even though her part was short, only Stevie Wonder outshined her. In my opinion.
Nah she outshined all only Bruce came close
When Quincy Jones is conducting and Harry Belafonte in the back letting others shine you know there's nothing but greatness in the room. I was lucky enough to have been in my 20s when this was created and they were ALL superstars then. The 70s and 80s was the greatest time in music history. 💖💖💖💖
Same here ❤ ❤
I was 15 when this came out. It was special for sure
Love 💗 Harry Belafonte!
I was in college! Great time in music!
one of the most iconic singers in history : Diana Ross, Paul Simon, ....and ...overlooked..
There will probably never again be a song like this one! ❤🔥❤🔥 It's just as awesome now as it was then!
So true
And even if there was another song like “we are the world”, the celebrities would be mocked and trashed by people who don’t give a shit about anybody.
D*** right.
Except there was a 25th anniversary edition with Janet Jackson and Bieber. Not the same though.
@@stewrobb2329 *shudder*
What makes this song even better is the fact that each artist is truly singing from the heart. And Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen brought it home towards the end.
At that time all the top artists came together, leaving their egos at the front door, & donated time & money for this charity event (Famine in Africa). Lionel Ritchie & Michael Jackson wrote this song!! I get chills every time! 😭😭 I think Cindy Lauper killed it on the vocals!! Love Tina Turner!! Love the reactors’ faces when MJ shows up - pure joy! 😁😁😁 l’m pretty sure artists today couldn’t set aside their differences long enough to pull this off!! They don’t have the talent either!!
Man Debra, you couldn't have said it any clearer than just what you said. Ain't, oops sorry forgot this isn't a word...ok, ok, you really had to have had to grow up back when music was authentic and real!! Musicians back in the day really had to have a little of something of a voice in order to make it back then. These so called wannabe singers today, seriously don't get it!! The "it" being, NO AUTO TUNE, clear and concise vocals, none of the mumbo jumbo crap their spilling through the radio nowadays..WOW, what a load of wasted air space; these goofballs have absolutely nothing-nada to offer us, the listening viewers!!! I just can't force myself to sit, stand, run, or anything else and listen to the horrible garbage they want to call talent & music. If I want to have a good day, just kicking back and really enjoying my time, well I'd just get out my trusty LP's/CD's and have the time of my life knowing at least I'm hearing the BEST!!
I also realized that every reaction ends up with a smile when they hear Michael! Love it!
@@rhondamcbath6279 Right?? I grew up in the best eras of music! The 60’s, 70’s, & early 80’s before auto tune replaced the non-talented wanna be. My dad was in a folk trio in the 60’s so music was a big part of our family’s life!! Here’s a little story … I watched a channel where this guy demonstrated how auto tune works. I was flabbergasted at how you can have the worst vocals then with auto tune now you sound good!! 😳 For fun the guy tried to auto tune Freddie Mercury!! Guess what? Nothing changed … that’s how good Freddie’s vocals were. 😂 👊 (boom)
They need to play this song more
ALL TRUE.
I was around 14 when this magic happened. This song was played all over the World. I remember the day of 28th of March of the 1986, like over 6.000 radio stations all over the planet, played the song simultaneously at 10:15am. I remember in schools (Italy) when they told us that the song would have been played all over the planet and it is been so... It has been the biggest moment of unification that I ever lived in my life. Something that is just utopia, a dream, at the day of today... I'm so glad that I'm coming from that era. Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie materialized a masterpiece that night in L.A. This song has been made for charity. All those superstars went for free to spend the night in a studio to record the song. Some of them arrived there straight from the Americans awards etc .. They all left just when the job was done in the morning. No financial compensation for that long amazing job that they did. A support to Africa, that's it. There is a fantastic documentary (presented "hosted" by Jane Fonda) that shows part of that magical night. Whoever is attracted by this song and wants to know more, I suggest to watch that documentary.
The Bruce + Stevie pairing was genius, and Cyndi Lauper has so much heart. Also, did you notice the Ghostbuster in the back row? :D
and David Hasselhoff too lol
Dan Akroid was also a blues singer and co starred in the movie Blues Bro
@@TheSpud1129 David Hasselhoff wasn’t there, but maybe you mistook Lindsey Buckingham for him? With his shorter hair, and no beard, he resembled him in the video.
@@TheSpud1129 no he wasn’t there
That would be Dan Aykroyd
This song is proof, that you can take amazing singers from different genres, different singing styles, different vocal abilities, different music abilities, different backgrounds, different races, different levels of success, & more than likely different points of view, yet when put together, for a cause that is dear to their hearts, there is absolutely *NO* difference whatsoever!!! 💗 **THIS SONG IS PURE MAGIC, & STILL GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS AFTER ALL THESE YEARS** 💗
5:15 " I have never reacted to a video like this. Never!" Nope, and you probably never will again because something like this could never happen today. Artists today are too egocentric. This was such a wonderful project. Several countries in Africa, particularly Ethiopia, were ravaged by drought and famine in the mid 1980s. Millions of people were dying and the images, especially the children, have never left me. It was truly heartbreaking. Projects like this, Band Aid, and Live Aid raised nearly $200 million for famine relief.

This came out 1985 all the proceeds went to African Relief fund raising 70 million dollars in 85 (145 million in today's dollars with inflation 2021) to feed children in African Countries. The artist donated their time. I bought this cassete when it came out I was 9 years old then. Wish they do more of this but todays musicians have so overblown egos. 😢 No one artist would get along
They did another for Hattie and another for covid19. They O.k.

I remember the first time I ever heard this and it still gives me goosebumps to hear it now and see all those musical giants! It was an incredible event and every time it came on the radio or the TV, I sang it, loud and proud!!
So many of those great artists have gone home now. Can you imagine what the choir in heaven must sound like!! Sometimes I can’t wait to go on. This is not my home. ❤😊❤😊
Cant imagine any musical artist doing this today, too egotistical british or american
@@mzzzkla887 but not quite the same camaraderie though as the 80's artists
There won't be anything like this again. They supported and respected each other and were there for a common goal. They were to check their egos at the door (notice Prince isn't there - he wanted special treatment and Quincy Jones told him no, also Madonna wasn't even invited!). They also just came from the American Music Awards, directly to start recording this at 10pm and worked their the night. Also notice, these are legends - no one was in their 20's. While some were 80's stars, most have been on the industry for a L-O-N-G time. Most came up in the 60's and 70's, then you have Ray Charles from the late 40's! Many of them were grandparents who were still at the top of the industry! Don't forget they all could really sing! No auto tune in 1985! I was 15 years old when this was released and premiered on MTv, back when MTv played music! We knew the words quickly. We played this noon stop!
Small correction Michael Jackson was in his 20s when this song and video was recorded. You are correct about all of the other lead singers being older than the 20s.
Notice how everybody had a lyric sheet in their hand. This wasn't some long drawn out production where they had to work around everybody's time frame. MJ sent out the call everybody showed up and did it that day like professionals. And what do we get? One of the best songs ever. There will never be anything like this ever again. None of the artists nowadays would be able to put aside their egos and share the spotlight with so many other people.
I bet my life, 90% of views, have NO CLUE How truly legendary this song is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I actually was alive and in my teens when this song came out...the honest truth is Michael made it happen and 60-70% of the participants came from music awards show and stayed up ALL NIGHT because Michael, Lionel, Diana, and Quincy wrote and produced this magical song and music...and this is NO BS!!!
...and I also love Stevie and Steve Perry...gifts from GOD!!!!!
Amazing amalgamation of talent/legends. Steve Perry was the best vocalist in the room, too bad he didn't get more singing time but it was still great.
They did this after the music awards. Otherwise they'd never get all these artists together
This song sales, donations and merchandise raised 80 million for famine relief in Africa.
Millions of people were dying of starvation.
All filmed in one night. Check out the documentary on youtube. It's unbelievable. The younger generation has no idea how many superstars were there.
This song ALWAYS brings tears to my eyes ever since it hit the charts. We are the world! 😭
Conducted by the one and only Quincy Jones.
I feel *so* old, I remember when this first came out and how the music industry seemed to be all too willing to try to help people who needed it. The best bit, imo, is when Cyndi Lauper busts in with her tutti-fruity hair and huge personality. We definitely need this kind of spirit again.
I'm right there with you.
totally... and then her little scream... Love her! 💜
This was one of the biggest fundraiser events to feed the starving people in Africa. Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote this song
There was a famine in Africa and these musicians got together to raise money to send food to the families especially the Children. This video was recorded in a time when the world was kinder and loved others. Not the same today.
The song We Are the World was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones. This recording with so many artists singing and the Live Aid Concert in England and the United States are events we will all remember forever. For me, it was lucky to have enjoyed them in the 1980s, all united by Africa without egos and with a common goal, to raise funds. Wonderful the year 1985
Has there ever been so much talent in one room. I think not. Chills
Absolutely!
Hall and Oates you MUST react to them 'Sara smile" "She's gone" "Kiss on my list" "You make my dreams" "Rich girl" and so many others
They raised around $22 million to feed the starving Ethiopians. The 46vartist donated their time!
It's ok to be emotional, what els can you be listening to all these wonderful singers. A treasure 🥰🥰
Michael Jackson and Lionel wrote this. It was the best of the best in that room, sadly many of them have passed away
😭😭
But the impact they left behind was huge, so we can always remember them :)
@@anguspowell2216 true and more and more reactors are being introduced to not just this video but the individual singers as well
This song should have a stamp that states “PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA”. All of them LEGENDS and all together with zero egos for a cause. This is what made America great.
You should also react to Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight “That’s What Friends are For”. Same era. Soooo good!
I’ve never seen a reaction video to Dionne Warwick. She was an aunt to Whitney Houston. She was amazing!
@@helenstewart2392, she was actually Whitney’s cousin. My dad had all her albums so I grew up listening to her. I think the 80s was the most prolific and diverse decade of music…

Great suggestion, yes! That song gives me goosebumps every time
About a year before this one British artists did one called Do they know it's Christmas, that was for Africa as well. Sting, Duran Duran, George michael to name a few.
That was very special also
Let's not forget "Tears Are Not Enough" by Northern Lights, another great song! It tied with WATW at winning the Grammy Award the following year.
We are the world! Help all you can. This song opened my eyes even tho I was a child. Love is the key. Raised my kids this way.❤❤❤
I grew up with this song. Came out when I was 14 years old. NEVER EVER hold back your tears when you listen to this song. If it is affecting you enough to make you emotional, then it is doing what the creators meant for it to do.
Africa suffered a drought.. thousands were dying.. they did this right after an awards show.. all proceeds went to Africa.. very emotional
This is one of my favorite songs. Orchestrated by the goat Quincy Jones. He told everyone to check their ego's at the door and come together.
Sadly everyone did EXCEPT MJ. Dude pulled a douche move...the song is excellent, but he was a POS behind the scenes.
@@TheSpud1129 I think you have your people wrong; Willie Nelson famously was the d bag made because of the part he was given.
Im not sure he is the GOAT. He is 1 of many who brings the masses together to enjoy musical compositions.
It is amazing to see some of the biggest singers in the world singing backup, and never even got a solo. I wish we could all get back to this kind of mindset. Thank you for this reaction. I really enjoyed it.
So glad you're able to appreciate it! It was epic!!❤❤😢😢❤❤🔥🔥🔥🔥
From start to finish.....Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, Jeffrey Osborne, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Darryl Hall, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Kim Carnes, Bob Dillon, Ray Charles,
Undisputed greatest collaboration ever. So much stardom and no egos. A bunch of great icons who understood the great good their voices could do
And the crazy thing is that this was right after an awards event and the artists were rounded up on the fly, I believe by Quincy Jones and Kenny Rogers, and Lionel Richie. They stayed at the hotel to practice over and over to learn a song they'd never heard, and also get this video filmed. No awards after party. Just them coming together to make this masterpiece. It was a long night, but so worth it.
There is an awesome Behind the Scenes video on UA-cam.
They started at about 10pm and finished the next morning around 8am
@@adamwyttenbach2851 Wow!
The AMA's 1985 MJ wanted to skip the award show and get started and everyone's schedule was booked up and that was the only time they could all be at the same place
You're right, it was Kenny, Quincy and Lionel that rounded everyone up right after the awards to come join in this project directly after the awards til 8 o'clock in the morning.
The special about the song was so good. Just hated that Jane Fonda was the host. She was sooooo hated at the time.

It is awesome that some of the musicians (Kenny Rogers most noticeably) memorised the music.
That duet between Bruce Springsteen (The Boss) & Stevie Wonder does something to the soul/spirit. It gives me goosebumps, along with MJ's solo parts.
To date, this song has raised more than $100,000,000 for Africa! That's right, ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS!
I am literally cry. 🥺Growing up in the 80s this song was HUGE
Man, that Bruce//Stevie section gives me chills every damn time!
Me too. I would never think their voices would work together but they do. But Quincy Jones was in charge and it's an understatement to stay he knows what he's doing.
What a beautiful time that was to be alive. ❤🙏
You're experiencing a genius producer/composer/collaborator/conductor - Quincy Jones - using his skills to bring every voice in like the instrument of an orchestra.😍 He does it with (fewer folks but genius collaboration) on "The Secret Garden." 👍 Welcome to our world, young man. Us old hippies/O.G.'s grew up in an era of legendary talent, musicians, performers. We believed, now and then, we are headed toward a more loving, peaceful world. Loved your beautiful, genuine reaction to greatness.💕
We sung this at our high school graduation class of 1985! Yes!
I love so much seeing our younger generations enjoy this. Once upon a time we came together as a Nation to love, support and help one another. MJ....the King of music!
You will never see this many SUPERSTARS IN a video again.
For Bob Dylan to do this, says all you need to know how important this was back in the 80’s, Dylan never does anything like this, given his mercurial personality
i'm 56, I've heard this song when it first came out. I cried.....U.S.A.....for America is what I'm saying today in 2022
This is a masterpiece. I remember when it came out, it had a big impact. Music can change the 🌍. I just can’t see anything like this being done today
There were many who said the same thing then but look. Its not adversity that writes history, it is overcoming adversity as a people and becoming better for it. You all see the agenda of the current leadership. This is their vision for the future and they don't care what anyone else thinks, but that is not how It works. I think a heavy majority has a different future in mind and if they don't care, we get loud. This is still a democracy, for how long is shaky but we need to be heard before we can't. I condemn communism and everyone associated with it.
I can't fkn believe this even has to be said in America..
What's really cool is the smiles on all the faces while singing their hearts out
Probably the best choir ever assembled. You are correct ADogg, this is one of the great masterpieces ever.
All these 30+ years later, and this song still gives me goosebumps! What a powerful song!!
When the stars started arriving at the studio, there was a sign that read Egos must be left at the door. When I first saw this I was in awe at the amazing sound and all the celebrities. There was Hands Across America too, where there was a human chain that stretched all across America. Everyone held hands at the same time for a few minutes making the chain. It was for charity for Africa.
Wow, I forgot all about Hands Across America. Thanks.
My school was part of that. I will never forget that.
I'm feeling old now 😂 36 years ago? MTV played this a lot in the 80s

It’s ok to cry. It means you’re human and you care. I’m 53 and watching this still makes me cry almost 40 years after it was released because I feel like we cared and respected each other more then.
I WAS BORN 1976 . I REMEMER ALL THIS AND IT STILL IS SO POWERFULL TO THIS DAY IT BRINGS TEARS
2023 & them lyrics still get me BIG🤧🤧
I was 10 when this was recorded... Helpinf Africa and their famin was huge in the mid 80's... I can remember my school raising money for the cause...
What I love about this video is that they all take time out to actually be there and contribute....no zoom, no skype like today. Gives you the feeling that they really care. I LOVE Ray Charles.
The USA copied the UK who had a song out 'Do They Know It's Christmas' with loads of well known singers of the day to raise money for Africa. Then Bob Geldolf and Midge Ure did the 'Band Aid' concert to also raise money for Africa. America comes 2nd again.
This song was also released and played all over the world at the exact time.
This song almost always brings me to tears. That much talent in one room just never happens anymore. I was a teen when this came out back in the 80s.
This was amazing and you will never see anything like it again. 💚
It's not just Michael and Lionel or Stevie in that video. You should learn about Kenny Rogers, Billy Joel, Steve Perry, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Cyndi Lauper these were also the legends of the time
Harry Belafonte who you see in the back, is actor, singer, activist who called on Lionel Richie & Michael to write the song. They got with Quincy Jones, who was conducting, to arrange it. He had the musicians, many of whom played on Michael’s Thriller & Off the Wall albums, to record the music before hand. Lionel & Quincy decided that the best time to do it would be literally right after the Grammys that year, so most of the artists could set the time aside & just come after the Grammy awards. Prince decided not to come but he contributed a song to the album. There as a famine In Ethiopia from a drought that lasted a long time. So that was the initial emergency, but the money raised was used to help several regions in Africa & then live concerts started getting organized to continue to help people in the world living in desperate conditions. Great reaction. At least you recognized some of the artists. 👍🏾
This is one of the most epic efforts in musical history.
It’s okay to cry. I’ve seen this so many times and I still get teary-eyed.
So much talent in one room.
As someone already mentioned, the Egos were set aside for one cause.
So you telling me you never heard or seen this??! Wow this is one of the greatest collaboration of all time.
There has never been so much talent in one room. Even the ones doing just background vocals all had #1 hits. All music genres came together to do this- pop, country, rock and for such an amazing cause. I tear up every time I see this video.
I get goosebumps every time I hear it !!!

Great song... I agree with many here. It's up to us to ignore the garbage put out by the politicians the media and sites like this. It's up to all of us. Almost everyone that I know agrees.
This recording session happened after one of the awards shows had just ended for the night and the people that are in the video chose not to go to some of the after parties. They worked on this song and each individual part for many hours that night. If you look you'll find another video that shows the making of USA for Africa and it would tell you exactly who all is in there and you can see them working on their individual parts and you'll find out who is who.

There were other greats also in this video such as DAN AKAROYD John Oats THE JACKSON FIVE including Latoya Jackson, The POINTER SISTERS, SMOKEY ROBINSON, Bette Midler and a few others.
lol I swear I just witnessed you falling in love with Cyndi 🤣🙃🥰🤭 don’t worry I love her also. Her voice is so unique and she’s an amazing human being... great reaction as always your face says it all. Keep pushing Adogg
My first time seeing you react. I suffer from depression and haven't been doing great. Watching you react to this video has brought a big smile to my face, I love watching your joy at seeing this great video. I wish you much success with your channel.
When you start out with THE Lionel Ritchie you KNOW there are some heavy hitters.
What breaks my heart is this is the world I grew up in. This was my.view of the world. Now we as people are so divided.
GREAT reaction! This was more special than you think. Not only all the legends from music in so many different genres, top stars in movies as well. Dan Akroyd fresh from Ghostbusters that came out that year as well. Harry Belafonte, also a singer though. Bette Midler. And a bunch of others. Quincy Jones put a sign up that said "check your egos at the door", they did and made this timeless masterpiece. It applied back then to Haiti & other parts of Africa in famine. It applies to 2020-2021. It's message is simple & applicable. Anyways, great reaction. Enjoyed watching. Liked/Subbed
