So you should never use a sander to remove old finish. It doesn't matter how well you clean the piece. there's still dirt and crud imbedded into the finish. You should chemically strip the furniture even if you're going to paint it strip it back to bare wood. That ensures proper adhesion between primer and wood. You should always check the joints on the piece you're working on for loseness. Looks are decieving even if they look tight wiggle and tug on every joint specifically around the base and the legs. ten minutea of inspecting saves you two hrs of work later on and ensures the piece is solid and won't fall apart on the customer. Just friendly advice.
