when she sings i can imagine i see through the eyes of a raven that flies through the mountains above fjords. Also the voice matching great. her voice is like the wide of the landscape their peacfullnes and the silentnes. While his voice describes the roughness of the culture and the life in such harsh but wonderful and mystic lands.
Wardruna is my all time favorite band. I live in the US, traveled to Toronto 2018 to see them. I will see them again this October at the Red Rocks Amphitheater that is outdoors. There music, goes deep, beyond the ears to the very being of who you are. I cannot stop listening to them. So glad you appreciate this music.
Finally!!! Wardruna is one of my favorite bands and it was great seeing you react to them. perhaps you would react to "Wardruna - Rotlaust tre fell (Live in Moscow)". Or the "FMF 2015: International TV Series Gala: Vikings suite, Trevor Morris" where Einar preformed. (as well as the amazing cellist Tina Guo)
This performance is filmed at Bergenhus Fortress in Bergen, Norway. A great location for this kind of music since the fortress was build in the early 1200's.
SO much love for Wardruna! And this song is my ultimate favorite for a lot of reasons. Additionally, when my daughter was between 6m and 1y old (she's 2.5 now), we would help her sleep by playing this song and walking in time with the main beat in a dark room. Worked *every* time. She really loves drums. Thanks for this react! So awesome! :)

Thank you Beth. Your reaction makes many of us proud. This song is an Anthem for those of us into the old ways, it was ancient the moment it was sung. Indeed a true bardic masterpiece. Thank you again.
I was attending this very concert when they performed this version of Helvegen...And I can tell you it was such an amazing experience! :D I can recommend a cover version of this song as well, from Kalandra! It is pretty interesting and I instantly fell in love with it!
Seeing wardruna live was probably the best experience I've had with live music. In all honesty it felt less like a festival when I saw them more like a spiritual experience.
I am back five years to the anniversary of when you reacted to this. I appreciate it more now after watching another reactor react to today. I think I just wasn't ready last year. I wanted to hear more of Aurora and I was hearing more of the guy instead. Ha ha. Now I really appreciate his voice. There's something very soothing about it.
Awesome that you reacted to this 😀 This was from Wardruna concert in their (and Aurora) hometown, Bergen. My daughter and I was on this concert, and we had goosebumps all the time. This song was the last one, and it is about singing for someone who have died. Taking farewell.
The rythm(asymetrical 3-bar) come from a dancing tratition called pols in Norway. As a fot note, the 3-bar showed up in scandinavia during the end of the medival peroid. People likely had just as mush fun with 2-bar before.
What a time to be alive of Norse bands popping up left and right and existing bands finally getting the attention they deserve. Makes me really happy because I can’t get enough of it
More funereal than war-like. If I recall correctly, this is a song of passing away to the Otherworld. Great video! Could you please react some Rosalía? Anything from her experimental (and conceptual) album "El Mal Querer" (Malamente, Bagdad, Di Mi Nombre...), or her more traditional take to Flamenco classics (Aunque Es de Noche is amazing). I would love to see your reaction to one of the few mainstream artists I follow, especially this Spanish woman we're so proud of.
I think this sounds so bittersweet. There is so much emotion. People have mentioned that the song evokes spiritual feelings. I think it sounds like the people are mourning.

This whole song... there are no words to describe the haunting beauty of what they created. I loved Helvegen before Aurora joined them, but her voice really harmonises, it's so beautiful. Loved your reaction =)
Its the fact that this music takes you back to an ancient place that you feel deep down inside of your soul. Im so happy you've found them. I have tickets to see them in October I can't wait
I adore the original video. The two most interesting things I learned while watching this are 1. how the harmonies are being sung and, 2. how each instrument, including the voices, is finding its own layer. Now I know part of the reason I find the performance so piercing and moving to experience. Thank you!

Oh would you have loved the "Helvegen (Kalandra cover), aside being even more amazing then Aurora's voice, she twisted the way she sings the song making it even better then the original.
Here is the same song but this time it is song with a backdrop of a mountain. As good as the one you listened to, this one is so much more vibrant and fantastic.
Love the unique sound of this sort of music, and this group in particular. It’s raw, organic, archaic, though not quite primal, and very much of the earth while maintaining this slight flavour of a world beyond. It’s what I listen to when I run, workout, or even when I wish to sleep. @BethRoars, she, unlike other reviewers, really digs into the meat and potatoes of the music, not just the vocals, which makes for a much more thoroughly analytical examination than most. I don’t know very much about singing being a humble bagpiper that sings only in the shower or when having consumed copious amounts of alcohol in pubs but I do know analysis and I love that element of the channel. Wonderful work from both the artists and the reviewer.
Thank you for finally reacting to more Aurora, I hope you will not wait as long to react to her again. If the problem is that you became an Aurora fan after your reaction to her cover of God Is A Woman and therefor have heard all her albums, may I suggest you react to more of her magnificent covers? She has one quit a lot and not all of them are as well-known as her Ariana Grande cover. I will leave a list below with all the songs Aurora has covered and links to them. Now I must suggest and beg you to react to another astonishing young Norwegian artist; Angelina Jordan. Aurora's voice is the sparkle as the sun hits the water, glinting so strong it almost blinds you and create rainbows on your retinas, while Angelina's voice is a hot wind heavily scented with spices, blowing over the dessert sand on a moonlit night. I do think you won’t believe your eyes when you see her sing, partly because of her age as she was born in 2006. I have to mark that she is not like any other young singer you have ever heard and she will not be what you expect at all. I suggest you react to her singing Summertime at the Norway’s Got Talent final in 2014, witch she won at 8 years old, beating all the adults and capturing the hart of the whole Norwegian population. Or you could react to Angelina’s cover of I Putt A Spell On You, her most watched video, filmed when she was 9 years old and in addiction to singing she also made the arrangements for the musicians. ua-cam.com/video/443pBSpx5B4/v-deo.html Angelina Jordan Astar (8): "Summertime" by George Gershwin, Norske Talenter ua-cam.com/video/nwFloCPXzCs/v-deo.html Angelina Jordan - I Put A Spell On You These are the covers Aurora has done. P3 Live is a radio show and the artists do an interview and get to sing one of their own song and do a cover, but they do not know in advance what song they will be covering and only get to know that when they arrive at the radio station an hour or two before they go on live. Havent watched one of your videos in a while but when this one popped up and it said Aurora and Wardruna I nearly broke my keyboard clicking on it. I am an Aurora freak and I actually discovered her from her first video singing with this band at the Traena Music Festival so this comes full circle for me. Shes kind of moved beyond this dark Nordic folky stuff with her latest albums but Im a sucker for her no matter where she goes artistically. And Wardruna is excellent as well. I would highly suggest Daichin Tana and her band HAYA if you like this.
While this is definitely the correct version to react to, as the sound quality...exists. I highly recommend checking out the version with the choir that has basically been filmed in a ravine. While the sound quality is kinda crap, the setting makes it utterly mesmerising. (The version is from Frøy Festivalen, which takes place on an island in northern Norway and while there are some places that are better than others, some bands just find someplace to play and set up there, generally outdoors).
II played this for my adult daughter and she did not really get it. I asked her to listen again but imagine lying in bed and the down beat of the drum is her heartbeat while the voices are coming through an open window. When the drum stopped, she gasped and then smiled, she got it.
Thank you for your reaction on this breathtaking song! You underlined some things about the feel you get from some specific vocals: very interesting and revealing!

Also the voice matching great. her voice is like the wide of the landscape their peacfullnes and the silentnes. While his voice describes the roughness of the culture and the life in such harsh but wonderful and mystic lands.
So happy you finally reviewed this one. Wardruna makes some of the most compelling music I’ve ever heard.
Hey! Check out my reaction to Einar here: ua-cam.com/video/uc8ceijaTz4/v-deo.html
I'm so glad you reacted to this, one of my favorite performances with Aurora. She's truly incredible.
This performance is filmed at Bergenhus Fortress in Bergen, Norway. A great location for this kind of music since the fortress was build in the early 1200's.
Was there. Was great. 😁
So awesome! :)
So you are raising a future viking lol
I am pretty sure she will have a beard when she will be 10
Im Chiricahua Apache out of Utah now living in Georgia. Im from a family with boxing and kickboxing almost as a religion, Like most Apache families i know. But music has had its hold on me from an early age. Near broke my father in two when i decided to quit my training to join the highschool band lol. Einar Selvik's music is utter magic. I love how the smallest phrases can cause goose bumps, but then have no one around to relate to the feeling. This was the first time seeing one of your videos ,and it was great to see you talk about and explain some of these musical phrases i was talking about. Keep up the great work. Oh, and i love you accent. Your newest follower.
Yah ta hey!
It is a delight to listen to someone so informative.
Amazing! He performed this song with Eivør Pálsdóttir as well
Another MORE AURORA comment!!! You said you also like her, so why not react to her even more? :)
I was about to suggest this hahahaha
Here is my reaction to Aurora God is a Woman: ua-cam.com/video/e3zVLbQ7l_s/v-deo.html
Totally aware of that reaction, but there's still a toooon more Aurora to explore
@@BethRoars **whispers** we want more

I get goosebumps every time I listen to this.
Awesome that you've done a reaction.
Heill Ódinn.

Skål, brother.
man, this music just stirs something in the soul. it's so beautiful, i can't listen without getting chills.
this never falls to give me massive tingles from head to toe, it awakens something ancestral in my soul
Hypnotic and all-encompassing!! ...and fun trivia on accent origins!
You might want to considder visiting Castlefest, in the Netherlands. It's a festival on the first weekend of August, which is jam-packed with bands like this.
I’ve seen Wardruna in the UK 3 times now. Best live band I’ve ever seen, hands down.
It is
pretty interesting and I instantly fell in love with it!
Limitedtimestruggle I second that recommendation! In fact I heard the Kalandra cover first and it sent me on the journey to discover this.
Anita Ferguson That is just awesome :D Happy you like it!
Seeing wardruna live was probably the best experience I've had with live music. In all honesty it felt less like a festival when I saw them more like a spiritual experience.
Pleasantly surprised to finally see Wardruna be given a spot :)
Makes me really happy because I can’t get enough of it
This react got you a new sub! I love your insights!
More Wardruna please!
I really like this type of musical genre, in particular I move to another time and experience viquinga.I love it !!!!
As a swedish viking and fully belives in asatru. I saw wardruna 2016 in gothenburg! and i can just say that the gods we're present and i was in tears
Lyrics from the original video:
Norwegian-----------------------English translation
Kven skal syngje meg--------------Who shall sing me
i daudsvevna slyngje meg------------into the death-sleep sling me
når eg på Helvegen går--------------When I walk on the Path of Death
og dei spora eg trår er kalde, så kalde------and the tracks I tread are cold, so cold
Eg songane søkte------------------I sought the songs
Eg songane sende-----------------I sent the songs
då den djupaste brunni-------------when the deepest well
gav meg dråper så ramme-------------gave me the drops so touched
av Valfaders pant------------------of Death-fathers wager
Alt ei veit , Odin-------------------I know it all, Odin
kar du gjømde ditt auge------------where you hid your eye
Kven skal syngje meg-------------Who shall sing me
i daudsvevna slynge meg------------into the death-sleep sling me
når eg på Helvegen går-------------When I walk on the Path of Death
og dei spora eg trår er kalde, så kalde------and the tracks I tread are cold, so cold
Årle ell i dagars hell-----------------early in the days end
enn veit ravnen om eg fell------------still the raven knows if I fall
Når du ved Helgrindi står ------------When you stand by the Gate of Death
og når du laus deg må riva-----------And you have to tear free
skal eg fylgje deg------------------I shall follow you
over Gjallarbrui med min song----------across the Resounding Bridge with my song
Du blir løyst frå banda som bind deg!------You will be free from the bonds that bind you!
Du er løyst frå banda som batt deg!-------You are free from the bonds that bound that you!

Quote from Håvamål -- The High Ones Speech, Poetic Edda
Døyr fe, døyr frender---------------Cattle die, kinsmen die
Døyr sjølv det sama----------------You yourself will also die
men ordet om deg aldreg døyr---------but the word about you will never die
vinn du et gjetord gjevt---------------if you win a good reputation
Døyr fe, døyr frender ----------------Cattle die, kinsmen die
Døyr sjølv det sama----------------You yourself will also die
Eg veit ein som aldreg døyr-----------I know one that never dies
dom om daudan kvar---------------the reputation of those who died
Here's the correct lyrics from Hávamál verse 76 and 77 as it appears in this song:
Deyr fé, deyja frændr,
deyr sjalfr it sama,
en orðstírr deyr aldregi,
hveim er sér góðan getr
Deyr fé, deyja frændr,
deyr sjalfr it sama,
ek veit einn, at aldrei deyr:
dómr um dauðan hvern
You should do yourself a favor and watch AURORAs concert at Nidarosdomen; you can find it on UA-cam. It's breathtaking.
Great video - thanks for all your hard work
This is one of those songs where I have no idea what they are saying but I still love it, first time I heard it I had goosebumps.
💛
I never listened to this type of music ,then my world turned upside down 19month ago when i lost my beautifull little girl 12yrs old ,since then this music from wardruna gives me a way to get lost in my mind .
This song is SO amazing. I can’t listen to rain without humming it. It IS rain. And aurora’s voice, god. Thank you for making these videos about it, the way you explain things is really cool :)
This whole song... there are no words to describe the haunting beauty of what they created.
I loved Helvegen before Aurora joined them, but her voice really harmonises, it's so beautiful.
Loved your reaction =)
I’m going to be travelling to Finland to see Wardruna play at Savonlinna castle, this will be the second time I’ve seen them. I’m so excited
To me, this song is like something I've always known, I feel like listening to a past life music, it moves me so much! Thanks for your reaction!
Einar Selvik is an outstanding artist! One of my absolute favorite musicians to listen to. Do more of his work please
Hey! Check out my reaction to Einar here: ua-cam.com/video/uc8ceijaTz4/v-deo.html
Your impression of Aurora's cover of Famous Blue Raincoat would be quite cool.
Its the fact that this music takes you back to an ancient place that you feel deep down inside of your soul. Im so happy you've found them. I have tickets to see them in October I can't wait
Thank you thank you thank you I love Wardruna and Aurora together they are fit to sing in the hall of Valhalla
I adore the original video. The two most interesting things I learned while watching this are 1. how the harmonies are being sung and, 2. how each instrument, including the voices, is finding its own layer. Now I know part of the reason I find the performance so piercing and moving to experience. Thank you!
When I heard the last bit with the delay I was thinking of the voice of Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance. Similar voice.
I would like to recommend "Árstíðir - Heyr himna smiður (Icelandic hymn) in train station
" on UA-cam for some A cappella/quire in traditional Scandinavian style.
I love Eivør's version of that song too
You should call your site, Beth Overreacts. There is SOOO much going through your head so fast you struggle to get it out fast enough. Thanks, I really enjoy you.
I love Wardruna, and Aurora as well, I think togheter they sound amazing! greetings from Argentina, your videos are very enjoyable❤
You'll have to go to the scene in Vikings that this song was played during, they were getting ready to find Athelstan. Such a haunting song.
This is one of the best live performances ever. Wardruna is amazing and I wish they would make Aurora a permanent member.
Oh would you have loved the "Helvegen (Kalandra cover), aside being even more amazing then Aurora's voice, she twisted the way she sings the song making it even better then the original.
I wouldn’t say better, but definitely different in a very beautiful way!
Here is the same song but this time it is song with a backdrop of a mountain. As good as the one you listened to, this one is so much more vibrant and fantastic.
I'm not familiar with the band but I love Aurora !! She sings with such emotion.
Listen to Wardruna Helvegen when they playing it by their self, it's awesome!
They have it on Spotify 👌
That is simply beautiful.
It's so cool to see you commenting on this... Wardruna is amazing... I'm a percussionist and love drumming along with them...
the horn is a late iron age lure, originally a bronze age instrument that was used in Scandinavia up until the mid to late medieval age
Thank you for reviewing this in detail. Respect and good wishes.

These are the covers Aurora has done.
I would like to note that her covers on P3 Live is especially impressive because of the circumstances. P3 Live is a radio show and the artists do an interview and get to sing one of their own song and do a cover, but they do not know in advance what song they will be covering and only get to know that when they arrive at the radio station an hour or two before they go on live. Aurora has covered Wrecking Ball, Believer and God Is A Woman on P3 Live, and you can see she has notes in front of her with the lyrics.

I love this song. Had not heard this rendition. I like living in a time where I can experience amazing bands with such ease.
If you ever have a chance to hear them live it's absolutely amazing and dare I say better than recordings!
I'am so pleased that our campaign to get this song played succeed! 👌
Thank you Beth! 👏👍
rarely i like vocal coach reactions, cause all they do they pause music and talk boring stuff no one cares, but you enjoy this, few comments and just embrace music... loved it
Yes i was just going to say that and she really informs us rather than doing weird faces like all of the vocal coaches on UA-cam.
PLEASE! React Aurora, "Murder song" live in Iceland at Airwaves for the Current. You gonna see her potential.
MORE AURORAAAAA 🥰😭
Love the review Beth, explained very well and it brings me into the "zone",so to speak. Beautiful expression when you mentioned "A Hug Of Sound"..It's a magical feeling when this is present at a live performance. Keep up the good work !
By the way, this is a pretty rare experience as Aurora rarely sings in her native language. She says she finds it too personal and informal.
Wardruna + Aurora and Heilung with Maria. Two perfect combos.
Makes me smile at the way this music reaches you!
I love this kind of songs, please react to Anathema - Untouchable
While this is definitely the correct version to react to, as the sound quality...exists. I highly recommend checking out the version with the choir that has basically been filmed in a ravine. While the sound quality is kinda crap, the setting makes it utterly mesmerising. (The version is from Frøy Festivalen, which takes place on an island in northern Norway and while there are some places that are better than others, some bands just find someplace to play and set up there, generally outdoors).
okay that is a stunning due. Auroras voice with Wardruna can only come from outa space
Such a beutiful song , more aurora plz.
you should do next Kvervandi (acoustic) by Ivar Bjørnson & Einar Selvik
I have no words to describe how beautiful this song is and how much emotion it evokes
yes, please!

I saw this live and it was pure magic... stood directly in frond of Einar and it just gave me goose bumps

Oh I’m so happy you know about them now!! I love them.
I have been waiting for this so badly!
