Technically, the first singer from Skáld uses chest voice, not mixed voice, and the chest voice singing doesn’t sound aggrsv or harsh at all, not using vibrato doesn’t make it harsh, plus it sounds a lot better and more professional without excessive vibrato, and the style of singing used by the singer from Skáld is actually called belting, not throat singing, and the belting is in a Nordic style, which makes sense because most Skáld songs are in Old Norse and the other Nordic languages - it’s actually one of the highest voices in the music indústry, that singer being a medium soprano with light tone and a full lyric subtype, same as the 2nd singer from Nightwish that sang the song Amaranth, the two singers’ voices are about the same vocal height on the vocal height spectrum, so they can sing F5 and G5 / G#5 in chest voice, without having to go into mixed voice!
However, the singing style of the dudes is a bit similar to certain types of throat singing, as they sing very low notes in chest voice, similar to the singing style of oktavists from Russia - it’s kinda like subharmonic singing, but only the chest voice (the fundamental) without the higher notes, and they are like choirs with multiple voices singing at the same time!

Oh, you've found the alphabet song. ᚠᚢᚦᚨᚱᚲ ᛁᛉ ᚨᛃ ᚲᚢᛚ ᚦᛝ᛬ Also they're a French band who makes Old Norse music that would've been able to be made when the Víkingur were running around
Yea, that’s true, and I am actually learning all these pretty languages, including Old Norse & Icelandic etc, and am advanced level in Dutch and intermediate level in Norwegian / German / Swedish and beginner level in most other Germanic languages and in the 6 Celtic languages etc, so I can understand a lot of the words / verbs, and they all come from the same language Proto European (the first logical language that was created by a dude a long time ago, and then other dudes modified it and turned it into different languages) so technically all Germanic languages and all Celtic languages and also the Latin languages and the Slavic languages come from the same language, so it’s very interesting to observe the similarities / root words while studying most of those languages - the letter Ö doesn’t exist in Old Norse tho, so it’s supposed to be ǫ instead of the umlaut ö which has a different sound, but I suppose they use the ö because it’s not easy to find the ǫ on a keyboard, so it must always be copy / pasted, and they use Icelandic pronunciation in most Skáld songs, so allar is pronounced atlar and allir is pronounced atlir (because LL is usually pronounced TL in most Icelandic words) and they also pronounced the ǫ as an ö sound (EO sound like in the French word cœur) and the F is pronounced F if it’s inside the word, however, in Old Norse LL is pronounced L and F is pronounced more like a V if it’s inside of a word and ǫ is pronounced more like a normal O sound and HV is pronounced HW / HU like in English, but in Icelandic HV is pronounced KV with a K sound before the V, so there are a few differences in pronunciation and spelling, but most words are almost the same tho, so Modern Icelandic is the closest language to Old Norse!
The translated lyrics are absolutely awesome too. Honoring those following the old runes is how I personally have seen it mentioned in meaning. It stirs something in me in some way...
As you're a fan of the contrast between her almost ethereal vocals and the low, deep backing, you may like fleshgod apocalypse. They're a symphonic death metal band with an opera singer in the band! @@brad5983 you realize that you did not have to be a Scandinavian to be Viking right lol the frech people back in the day were the gauls they had their own laguage and culture and similarities and before it was gaul it was the Gallic tribes I'm sure some frech gaul warriors might have mated with some Vikings woman or some Vikings men might have mated with French women in sure when the Vikings invades Britannia some married and even had children with Christian English woman so some of these people who are not fully Scandinavian might have Scandinavian DNA. this band might be French but probably have Viking ancestors as well. There was also a time when all of the European countries unites as one to overthrow the Romans so I'm sure they all mates with each other at one point in sure some anceint Scandinavians before the Viking age fought Romans and you don't have to be scananavian to be Viking some Germanic tribes and even other countries were Vikings as well even some Gallic tribes before the Viking age when they were all fighting the Romans at that time they were called barbarians all groups had similarities some even wore Viking type of helmets and armor and look like Vikings bit were not called that when I was talk in to a historian she said that some of Spartacus rebellion range across from Greeks to Germanic tribes to Britons before it was even England and some were the gauls the huns Hannibal people and so on some were even Scandinavian. Or the visigoths and ostrogoths. And same were there no fake Viking here I'm sure they were some English British Vikings cause of the Danes invading Britannia at that time they were the Saxons so don't be surprised of you meet some Germans French British or even Scottish or even Irish people with Viking DNA the Vikings did raid and pillage. I'm Asian and little bit of French I did research and found out my French ancestors had Viking in him a little bit as well but yet I'm Asian does that make me a fake Viking does that make me a fake gaul no I'm more Asian than I am European. I get called fake Viking alot without people realizing I have Viking DNA I'm me and the gauls French DNA in me as well cause I'm not a Scandinavian or even white.

Skáld, stylized as SKÁLD, is a French neofolk band, formed in 2018. Their music is distinguished by the use of ancient instruments mixed with the singing techniques of the Old Norse skalds. The group is very influenced by the Vikings television series, but also by Scandinavian culture and Norse mythology.
You should check these guys out again and look at the video they uploaded of the song Jormungrund (digital live session). Just incredible vocal performances.
The closest language to Old Norse is Icelandic. Most Icelandic people can read Old Norse with little or no difficulty. The main difference between the languages is spelling differences, similar to Old, Middle, and modern English.
They sing or at least try to sing in old Icelandic I had that as a subject last semester (I am studying Northern studies) and the problem is, that we don't really know, how old Icelandic sounded like. If it sounded like the modern Icelandic, which is not such a big difference to the old iclenadic writings. So all kids in Iceland read the old sagas in old Icelandic and still understand what they're reading. So basically, we pronounce old Icelandic like new Icelandic. Therefore, though I really love their album and songs - their pronounciation is basically kind of wrong at times 😅
they do use old norse but norse vikings were also technically spread through out much of euroupe and the band does german language alsoso pretty much much of the european langauges from what was old norse
they are singing in the old Norse tunga or tongue in English, and related to Icelandic my language, a more modern and advanced version of the old Norse and the Faroese language, I can understand them almost perfectly
The reason you find the singing similar to Mongolian throat singing is because the Mongolians learned throat singing from the Vikings that were there to trade as well as work as mercenaries and bodyguards over time the Mongolians were able to alter it slightly and make it their own just as the Vikings did which is why it’s different but still very similar
I’d say another big one to hit the folky/classical sound like this, Corvus Corax. Also, for the Viking feel, early Leaves’ Eyes, like Vinland Saga or Amhran.
well gaelic is a pretty germanic lamguage. i (german) was just in skotland and ther were many words i could guess when i saw them written or inderstood the similarity after finding out the meaning
Yes, my fav band! Thank you! Also check out their song Odinn or Gleipnir. Another singer I would recommend is Eivor. I looove hee vocals. Check out her song Trollabundin or I Tokuni
Small history tidbit. You noticed similarities between Old Norse folk music with throat singing and Mongolian throat singing and there may be a reason for that. The Old Nordic mysticism from which throat singing, as a shamanistic practice arose, was heavily influenced by the Sami people of Northern Norway who are theorised to have a distant Urgalic and Mongolian descent based on their DNA haplogroup. Throat/Overtone singing is probably very very old and is linked to spirituality because it almost sounds like 2 voices rather than one. As an aside, I love how we can tell that you are authentically talented as a vocalist just by your on the spot, off the cuff vocalisations. That's real skill.
From what I understand, the gene for red hair was picked up by some vikings when they invaded the British Isles, and not the other way around. Few vikings (or their direct descendents) had red hair. But who knows. Maybe one of them vikings who got the red hair gene went back to the Isles and there you are. :-D
I read somewhere that it's old Norse. This group SKÁLD is from France. Some of them have blue eyes. I wonder if they have Norman ("North Man") ancestry?
This song Rún is about the 24 letter Proto-Germanic runic alphabet called the Elder Futhark. The main chorus of the song is literally the runes them selves. Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, ect.

Nordic / Germanic languages are so pretty, the prettiest and most refined languages ever with almost only gorgeous and poetic words, so I am learning them all, and I highly recommend learning them, including Old Norse & Dutch and also Norwegian / Gothic / Icelandic / Danish / Faroese / Swedish etc, and also the 6 Celtic languages, namely Welsh / Breton / Cornish / Manx / Irish / Scottish Gaelic, and Hungarian & Slovene, and the Latin languages, namely Gallo / Portuguese / Galician / Latin / Occitan / Spanish / Esperanto / Aranese / French / Italian and the other Italian-based languages and French-based languages - I am upper beginner level in Old Norse and Icelandic, and advanced level in Dutch, and writer level in English, and Intermediate level in Norwegian / German / Swedish, and beginner level in Gothic / Faroese / Danish / Luxembourgish / Norn / Limburgish and the three Frisian languages (West Frisian / North Frisian / East Frisian) and the other Germanic languages and in the 6 Celtic languages and in most Latin languages, and native speaker level in Spanish, and upper beginner level in Portuguese / French, and I can’t wait to get to a native speaker level in all these pretty languages, they are so pretty!
I have learnt over 1.500 words in Old Norse and Icelandic, and learned most of the lines in the Skáld songs, which are a great introduction to Old Norse - I cannot understand how can an ancient language like Old Norse (and also, Gothic) be so pretty and refined, it looks and sounds so modern, all those pretty words are so áddìctive and bring a lot of joy to the eye and ear, which makes learning these pretty languages real fun!
This music literally brings tears to my eyes and gives me chills I feel more connected to my ancestors when I listen to this I'm american and I have scottish/german heritage
You should listen to Eivør - Rain (stripped back acoustic version)
Eivor is a force of nature, seen her play live. It was magic.
I'd love a reaction to Trollabundin especially:P
Trollabundin, the 2 minute version show more of her rawness and abilities!
Gilgamesh891 nothing wrong with me. Just a Faroese passing thru
Skáld are epic🔥❤️ Can’t wait to see them soon
This before Wardruna?... Hmmm, I like both but Wardruna flows through my veins when I hear it. It's so magical...

should definitely react to more songs from Skáld. they're amazing
The songs Troll Kalla Mik / Elverhøy / Flúga / Rauðr Loginn Brann / Grótti / Fimbulvetr / Gleipnir / Óðinn / Þat mælti mín móðir / Sækoningar / Ríðum Ríðum / Sólarljóð / Rún / Hinn Mikli Dreki / Villeman Og Magnhild / Då Månen Sken / Norðrljós / Santiano are among the best Skáld songs, and the others are also good, I am learning all the lyrics from Skáld songs - the words / names holy / holly and girl and amazing only reflect me and cannot be in yt names or names or in comments and must be changed / edited out! Compłiments can only be used when referring to the songs and elements of nature and pretty languages etc, not when referring to ppl / oneself etc! The songs from Skáld are amazing tho, really pretty melodies and vocals, just as the songs from Varien / Nightwish / The Dark Element etc, having that epicness and cinematic vibe!
Anyways, the first singer from Skáld uses chest voice, not mixed voice, and the chest voice singing doesn’t sound aggrsv or harsh at all, not using vibrato doesn’t make it harsh, plus it sounds a lot better and more professional without excessive vibrato, and the style of singing used by the singer from Skáld is actually called belting, not throat singing, and the belting is in a Nordic style, which makes sense because most Skáld songs are in Old Norse and the other Nordic languages - it’s actually one of the highest voices in the music indústry, that singer being a medium soprano with light tone and a full lyric subtype, same as the 2nd singer from Nightwish that sang the song Amaranth, the two singers’ voices are about the same vocal height on the vocal height spectrum, so they can sing F5 and G5 / G#5 in chest voice, without having to go into mixed voice!

Ooh, I love this song so much! Loved your reaction as always. Thanks!
Husband loves Vikings history even before the Vikings show came around. He’s a mix with Polynesian and Belgian. We have a very Scottish surname, but there is definitely strong Nordic blood in there too. I honestly think the entire UK are all connected in my opinion. Really cool reaction video! 😎

Oh, you've found the alphabet song. ᚠᚢᚦᚨᚱᚲ ᛁᛉ ᚨᛃ ᚲᚢᛚ ᚦᛝ᛬
Also they're a French band who makes Old Norse music that would've been able to be made when the Víkingur were running around
Skald is awesome.
Skald sings in Old Norse!
We love this song, my little boy falls asleep to it, the beat is great!
I'm brazilian and love your content.
The lyrics are in Old Norse with Icelandic pronunciation. The names of the runes of the Elder Futhark are reconstructed Proto-Germanic.
Ec Man Iotna is my favorite song of theirs, followed closely by Yggdrasil
The translated lyrics are absolutely awesome too. Honoring those following the old runes is how I personally have seen it mentioned in meaning. It stirs something in me in some way...
Singing of the runes of power. Brave and beautiful.
As you're a fan of the contrast between her almost ethereal vocals and the low, deep backing, you may like fleshgod apocalypse. They're a symphonic death metal band with an opera singer in the band! I'd recommend prologue/epilogue as a good example of her voice! Love your videos, keep up the amazing content! :)
You might wanna look at a performance to be found under the title "Wardruna, Aurora and Oslo Fagottkor: "HELVEGEN"" on YT.
Here is a reaction to Aurora: ua-cam.com/video/e3zVLbQ7l_s/v-deo.html
Oh! i have been begging for you to react to Eivor- Trollabundin! (The 2 minutes version, please!)
Also, from her, Wake me up live, and extremely powerful performance!
Thank you.
Nice to see she is proud of who she is and not ashamed! Make Britain Great Again
Would love to see you react to loreena mckinnett- the highwayman (beautiful Irish tinged vocals) or heidevolk-nehalennia (wonderful viking folk metal with 2 male vocalists harmonizing) love the channel
I am definitely supporting Nehalennia! Saw Heidevolk earlier this year live and it was just great 🤘
Hey! Here is my reaction to Loreena: ua-cam.com/video/GLVZN9C8va8/v-deo.html
@@BethRoars I clicked on it instantly when I saw it posted, I love her music thank you for the reaction.
First experience with style of music was her reaction to Heilung and it opened my eyes and I'm in love with style!
My first experience was listening to wardruna and then Heilung, it's crazy how the music can bring you into another world
YOU ARE SO GORGEOUS.
WOW
I feel strongly connected to this song. As a Wiccan this song takes me to a place in my head that I cant discribe.
it's so funny how I always get your vids recommended where you react to some of my fav songs ^^ love your reactions, you are really sweet and charming
Your voice is soothing
It's Old Norse. The group (Skåld) does I think all of their songs in this language.
Hope some day Skáld and The Hu singing together.
I would sell my children for a ticket to that show.
Vocal melody reminds me a LOT of trollabundin by eivor
I'm surprised you didn't look up what language it was at first. But it's nice to see you compare it to Gaelic since there's a connection.
I love this song, greatings from mexico city
This is kind of funny... I literally just watched this song a few minutes ago for the first time and thought: That would be a great song for Beth to react to... only to learn from my UA-cam suggestions, that I am 2 weeks late with that thought :-D
Anyway, here´s another suggestion:
FAUN - Federkleid
Beth to hear more 'Calling across the mountains' check out the Kulning technique - the language is Old Norse btw :)
Check out anything related to Einar Selvik. My preference would be Kvervandi
Hey! Check out my reaction to Einar here: ua-cam.com/video/uc8ceijaTz4/v-deo.html
These guys are awesome. They've got a second album out now and they're both just endlessly repeatable.
Its from a poem in old norse and the names of the runes.
The part of the poem she is singing says something like this:
All the witches
are of Viðolfi,
All the warlocks
are of Vilmeiði,
The spell-singers
all spring from Svarthöfða
you should react to the band Garmarna, especially the songs 'Herr Mannelig', 'Varulven' and 'Vänner och Fränder'. The singer usage of the R is incredible.
Dǫnsk tunga ( commonly referred to old norse) the song is about the runes. Specifically elder futhark
Love this song!
I'm of Germanic/Celtic/Scandinavian Descent. We're German, Danish, Finnish, and Norwegian. We have Viking blood, and my Moms side we are Native American English and Irish.
I absolutely love this song
Old Nordic is the language very beautiful I’m currently learning it
So I absolutely love these guys. I only found them yesterday. But as a small reminder please react to Brothers of Metal - Yggdrasil. I would absolutely love to see the pure reaction to that video.
Oh wow this is alot smoother the the other hu songs it's kinda soothing
SKALD mainly sings their songs in Old Norse. I looked it up n found it very interesting as well as unique
If you enjoyed this and crave some throat singing, check out "O Valhalla" by Skåld
My family and I listen to this song, now we are looting the monastery of my community: P
They’re a French band singing in old Norse. As for lyrics, she’s singing through the Elder Futhark, which are old Norse runes. :)
I envy you you're hair so much. My father was a red head but I didn't inherit it sadly. Love skald too
Troellabundin from Eivor - she is Faroese
It's Old Norse, and this is a French Group 🇫🇷❤
Les Peuples d'Arda fake Vikings haha 😂 yes it’s Norse well done Sherlock
@@lifewithchuckie562 Will you are all over the place... dont mess up Saxons and others, that was some centuriers before the Wikings. But i grant u one this... the wikings travelled to "france" ca 900... But dont mess up Wikings with Romans... almoast a millenium a part.

YES. Make this happen!

They are actually singing in Old Norse.
Lovely band from france 😀 i saw it live in summer 19 ❤️
Skáld, stylized as SKÁLD, is a French neofolk band, formed in 2018. Their music is distinguished by the use of ancient instruments mixed with the singing techniques of the Old Norse skalds. The group is very influenced by the Vikings television series, but also by Scandinavian culture and Norse mythology.
I love your videos! And I adore this band too
Was amazing and loved your reaction
Try listening to Kulning (ancient Swedish herding calling)
Check out my kulning reaction here: ua-cam.com/video/nO6feDT7PQA/v-deo.html
the language is old norse. they are actually singing about the futhark runes
You should check these guys out again and look at the video they uploaded of the song Jormungrund (digital live session). Just incredible vocal performances.
This language is just awesom
Man I'd love to learn old norse. It's a beautiful language. Maybe it could even help me grow closer to the gods
The closest language to Old Norse is Icelandic. Most Icelandic people can read Old Norse with little or no difficulty. The main difference between the languages is spelling differences, similar to Old, Middle, and modern English.
@@victorious276 looks like i need to take some icelandic lessons then. Thank you veey much kind stranger!
They sing or at least try to sing in old Icelandic
I had that as a subject last semester (I am studying Northern studies) and the problem is, that we don't really know, how old Icelandic sounded like.
They are speaking Old Norse, the ancestor of Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Faroese and Icelandic.
I'm ashamed to say, I had to look up who the Faroese are.
And Proto-Germanic. They for example use the word Þurisaz in the song.
Gaelic came from the Gaels who were a Germanic people, so it makes sense that Old Norse and Gaelic sound vaguely similar
they do use old norse but norse vikings were also technically spread through out much of euroupe and the band does german language alsoso pretty much much of the european langauges from what was old norse
It's sang in the older version of Norse. Once a dead language, it's making a revival as of recent years.
they are singing in the old Norse tunga or tongue in English, and related to Icelandic my language, a more modern and advanced version of the old Norse and the Faroese language, I can understand them almost perfectly
You might want to check out Tyr - Konning Hans :) ... I love that song.
Have you heard Fluga by this band? Makes me want to crank it up as high as I can so that you feel the beat in your bones!
The language is "norrønt" or what they at the time called "dansk tunge" ( Danish tongue).
fun fact that "digeridoo" is actually a Norwegian crank instrument similar to a hurdy-gurdy.
Its old norse with elder futhark runes. "Fehu Uruz Thurisaz, Ansuz Raido Kenaz, Gebo Wunjo Hagalaz, Naudhiz Isa Jera Heiwaz"
Wow this is really cool!!! I started to like this type of music from the TV show vikings, I'm going to download their catalog!!!!
Wardruna did most of that show, they are awesome as well.

WARDRUNA HELVEGEN 👌
Here is my reaction to Wardruna: ua-cam.com/video/NTEtMOqZQV8/v-deo.html
Language is Old Norse (Elder Futhark)
would love to see her react to silver for monsters
"winds howling.."
I wonder if they have Norman ("North Man") ancestry?
another song we would love to see you react to would be seven nation army (cover) from skald
it's a crazy voice - Luc Arbogast (La Moldau)
This is on my Wim Hoff breathing playlist. Great stuff
Hrafngrimr check them out- one of the members from skald broke off and made this other groop
