Never ceases to amaze me how close viking and German trad is to Irish trad music. Just goes to show, we're all cousins 😊 wardruna are amazing. Wardruna made a song suring lockdown called Lyfabjerg, or healing mountain. It has wonderful, hopeful and powerful lyrics to it. Beautiful video as well. Much recommended.
Great reaction, thank you! This is the song I want to be played at my funeral. Einar Selvik (Wardruna) is the male singer who's voice touches my soul directly; he is my favourite male singer (as Floor Jansen is my favourite female singer, she has the same effect on me). Listen to "Lyfjaberg" and "Völuspa" by Wardruna, they are pure magic.
Great song and vibe. I especialy love start of the song with Aurora, transition into Wardruna vocalist voice (with changing instrument sounds). Rest of the song is all about amazing harmonies between Aurora ethereal voice and his more bas sounds. Nice horn in the middle too.
Yeah, this is a very cool performance! Aurora was already a fan of Warduna (and Nordic folk in general), and she fit right in on this collaboration. And I love how so many Warduna fans were introduced to Aurora, and so many Aurora fans were introduced to Wardruna, all because of this fantastic performance. That's how you want these things to work, spreading the love. If you like being transported back in time, just wait till you check out Heilung!
I've seen so many reactions of this, and I keep coming back to you. I love your reaction! 🖤 The most common mistake people do when they think about the vikings (but also and mostly farmers) view of the land of death = hel is that hel are very very different compared to Ragnarök which is the death of a worrior and where you got to fight, get offed, than brought to life for you to partying like it's 1999 at Valhalla with aaaaall them cool gods, until you wake up, win the most glorious of battles, dies, gets to party like it's... Yeah, a bit like Groundhog day, but for dudes who's into wearing leather and do cool stuff with swords. So Hel is the place where the rest of us end up, take it or leave it. Old Norse mythology has very few right/wrong paths, or Evil/Good. It's a religion by and for people who got married as soon as they could bare a child, worked their ass off farming, just to die toothless and worn out at 55 years old. No fancy snanzy commandments or 10 this or that. It's just life vs death, and the difference was seldom there. Much love, From STHLM, Sweden
9:53 that might be the tagelharpe (norw/swed, Finnish: jouhikko) you hear. Its a two stringed lyre played with a bow. Think it is played by one of the guys standing almost still in the background. Also: You are onto something when you say that this transports you ( a thousand years) back, but you can't say if it was like this. Einar (singer/composer) is pretty clear that this is not viking music (as no-one really knows what that sounded like), but I guess it is a attemtp at makeing something like what it could have been. This is actually also one of the themes of this song (to recreate the lost songs).
As Kvitrafn (Einar) has said, they don't want to re-create, they want to make new songs and music. Personally I say this is as close to what we all "know" is Viking music from "back then". Kvitrafn is blessed by the Gods, Odin loves a good story.
The lead singer of Warduna, Einar Selvik, is a deeply connected to his country's cultural and musical past. Highly recommend "Hertan" which just premiered last month and already has nearly a million views. Enjoyed your reaction.
👍😍😍❤️ Love this😍 This song amongst others from Wardruna are played in the Vikings series. In one scene you can see Einar Selvik (vocalist/songwriter) standing on shore singing “Helvegen” while the vikings sails off to England👍 Hel (not Hell): In Norse mythology, Hel is an underground realm of the dead where it was believed that most people ended up when they died. In Norse cosmology, north is the direction towards cold and death. Therefore, it is understandable that Hel is cold and intractable, and that the road there leads "north and down". Hel is also the name of the ruler of the underworld. She is motherly and terrifying, and her skin is part blue-black like that of a corpse and part human-colored. She is very greedy and does not easily give up the dead who end up with her. This song is sung in Norwegian, except for the last part (acapella) which is in old norse😊
Hel is simply the goddess that rules hel. As a Norse pagan, hel isn’t a place of suffering, obviously it’s not like Valhalla and it’s kinda dreary, but ur not suffering. She takes the “dishonorable dead”, which just means you didn’t die in battle
Hel is not a bad place, it's "just" the place every dead person that is not chosen by Odin for Valhall or Frøya for Fòlkvang go to. You will meet your ancestors and it will be good. There is a certain place in Hel for actual punishment, though, but that's for truly dishonorable people, not Vince Viking (the average man).
Einar Selvik (the male singer) is a beast. He went from the heavy metal scene to forming Wardruna and making the most soulful music possible. You mentioned Vikings? He did the music for the TV show. However, in Nordic history, the Vikings were a blip on the scale of a very long stretch of history. Not featured here, but the other singer from Wardruna, female vocalist Lindy Fay Hella, practices seiðr, Nordic witchcraft. That's how you know they're the real deal.
I saw Wardruna at Savonlinna opera fest. I had no idea what I was going for. I didn't know Wardruna beforehand. The opera fest takes place in Olavinlinna Castle, so it really fit the band. It was like we all were in a trance for an hour or two.

I really find this pretty cool ❤Einar have done some projects with a Sami epic treasure of our,Mari Boine. Thank for the reaction and feedback on our Norwegian background ❤
We do know quite a bit about the late iron age scandinavians, in fact we know more about them than we do almost any other Germanic tribal group. We also have alot of artifacts, however mostly we only have the things that didn't rot, so lots of pottery, needles, combs (in the thousands) but also alot of runestones (alot in southern Sweden) many of which didn't exactly disappear. There was a bellowstone found in Denmark with a chiseled face of Loke, that atleast confirmes that Loke probably got his mouth sewn together. that is, some of the archeological finds confirm some of the mythology recorded by Snorri Sturluson, to be an actual belief of his ancestors. Few weapons and armor have been found, Thor's hammer pendants however are quite common in the archeological record. All that's left of houses and what we call ring forts, are the earthworks and post holes. We also have quite large gravesites like Lindholm Høje in Denmark or Borre in Norway. The curious thing is that even though we know a fair bit from the iron age, we have more artifacts from the bronze age, in part due to how they were preserved in bogs, so f.ex. we have alot of instruments of one specific type found all over Sweden, Norway, Denmark and northern Germany called a Lur, in the bronze age it was made entirely of bronze and has an S-shape, the wild thing is around 2 dusin or so still work they are that well preserved. The prevailing theory is that we find so many things in bogs, is because they sacrificed things in bogs. Humans included, hence bogmen which have been found all over Denmark (and other places) some of the most well preserved mummies, with teeth, hair, nails. Lots of gravemounds aswell, going all the way back to the megalithic era. A rough estimate says there are around 20.000 gravemounds from the Bronze age in Denmark (86.000 roughly in total, including remnants of gravemounds). Some have been unearthed sometimes due to weather damage or accidents, back before the late 18th century or so farmers were allowed to destroy them if they were on their property, to make farmland. It is estimated that there likely were up to 5-10 times as many before many were destroyed for farmland. Now you can find many of them sitting in the middle of fields and farmers take care of them. The difference is purely how things got preserved, but we have found quite alot compared to other Germanic and Celtic groups from this period. In part due to the fact that there was alot of movement in the preceeding 500 years across Europe. However, not as much in northern Europe, untouched by the Roman empire for a starter and the religious schism christianity arrived 500-600 years later than their Germanic and Celtic contemporaries, so there's just a hell of alot more stuff concentrated in one region.
So she was a goodess of death. But when christianity was forced upon Norway, by Olav the holy, with mercenary armies paid for by the Vatican, Hel got a new meaning.
Wardruna is a musical project based on Nordic paganism and Runes. The group has released two records, each thematizing eight of the runes. The second plate should complete the review of the runes. The third record has the working title Runaljod - Ragnarok. Wardruna has a collaboration with Viking museums to get as close to the music of the Vikings as possible. The music is played on instruments such as the hardanger fiddle, lur, kravik lyre, tegelharp, bone flutes etc. Parts of the music are recorded in nature or in places that are significant for the specific rune. Aurora gives Helvegen the right spice to take you back in time. Eivør also sang Helvegen together with Wadruna and the Danske Symphonie Orchestra. The video is available on YT.

Einar Selvik is the male singer from Wardruna......he wrote this as a way to bring historical feelings and beliefs to a modern audience......"Helvegen" is the road to Hel (NOT the Christian HELL)....only Viking warriors who died in battle went to Valhalla, other deceased Norse went to Hel after passing.....kind of like Christian Purgatory, I understand......Einar reminds us that death is inevitable, but we should remember and honor those who went before us......Einar has performed this with Eivor Palsdottir also, and their versions are just as magical as this performance with Aurora.........
