J Meyer - I keep thinking the same thing. Even through an amateur capture, you can hear the acoustics rolling around the rocks. When the drums stop before the final recitation, it really takes awhile for the echoes to settle.

Today marks the 40th day after the death of my sister from ovarian cancer. Our parents were born in Finland and immigrated here to America, where my sister and I were born. I've read that among the ancient Finns there was a belief that the spirit of the departed wandered the earth for around 6 weeks or 40 days before journeying across the icy black river to Tuonela (or Manala), the land of the dead. I did a ceremony out in my yard tonight to help my sister to make that journey. This song was playing in my mind as I did this.

I have listen to this song many times but this version really brought me into deep thought. How we lived as humans in ancient times and how we live now. So much more connected then. Thoughts reinforced with instinctual urges to go back. Walking the planet with other animals, gathering, hunting and raising families. We had intelligent advantages over animals thousands of years ago but sometimes I ponder that we have evolved too far and lost the true meaning to being human.

id say that we have kost what it means to live. to be human sounds like we are a so special being in this world but we arent. if you think about it in the cor we are nothing more than animals. but somehow because of our intelligence we really want to be special and in that we created a fucked up human society in which living means to always try to fulfill the wishes ideals of that so called society in which creation we long since had no play in. so we from scholl to death we work our asses of for nothing. cause in the end we all just want something to eat a family and a place to stay. but now we have states and religions and races and whatever funky reason we can think of to differentiate us from others and than probably hate them for being different. damn i should stop writing comments when im depressed.

    • @Lorddrase
      @Lorddrase 5 років тому +17

@Deathcoldan if you read my comment youd see that i compare humans to animals and in a biological sense ther are no different human races.
And did you really just put family and states on the same level ? I mean i dont know your family but the concept of the nation has absolutly nothing in common with my understanding of a family. Theres a difference between a nation and a tribe .

His voice is the voice of the gods. Whatever it is called, Odin, Zeus, Yahweh, Jupiter, Brahma ... a man has a frightening voice. The singer takes me to the past, almost to see those ancient battles of gods and people. Souls drowned in the sea of blood. They sing in such a way about something that most superficial people do not see, do not see and feel. People do not feel nature today. That is why such songs have a larger dimension.

Season 2, Ragnar in his prime. The whole Kattegat is waiting on their ships for Ragnar to get out of his great hall and head to England. He kisses his children and Aslaug, and this song begins as he gets out of the hall and starts walking to those ships with all the swag in the world. Absolutely epic and I just can't get over it.

"Hvem skal synge meg-------------Who shall sing me
i daudsvevna slynge meg------------into the death-sleep sling me
når eg på Helvegen går------------When I walk on the Path of Death
og dei spora eg trår er kalda, så kalda-------and the tracks I tread are cold, so cold
Eg songane søkte---------------I sought the songs
Eg songane sende--------------I sent the songs
då den djupaste brunni------------when the deepest well
gav meg dråper så ramme------------gave me the drops so touched
    av Valfaders pant---------------of Death-fathers wager
Alt veit eg, Odin-----------------I know it all, Odin
kvar du auge løynde------------where you hid your eye
Hvem skal synge meg-------------Who shall sing me
i daudsvevna slynge meg------------into the death-sleep sling me
når eg på Helvegen går------------When I walk on the Path of Death
og dei spora eg trår er kalda, så kalda-------and the tracks I tread are cold, so cold
Årle ell i dagars hell--------------early in the days end
enn veit ravnen om eg fell------------still the raven knows if I fall
Når du ved Helgrindi står -----------When you stand by the Gate of Death
og når du laus deg må riva------------And you have to tear free
skal eg fylgje deg-----------------I shall follow you
over Gjallarbrua med min song-----------across the Resounding Bridge with my song
Du blir løyst frå banda som bind deg!---------You will be free from the bonds that bind you!
Du er løyst frå banda som batt deg!----------You are free from the bonds that bound that you!
Døyr fe, døyr frender---------------Cattle die, kinsmen die
Døyr sjølv det sama----------------You yourself will also die
men ordet om deg aldreg døyr----------but the word about you will never die
vinn du et gjetord gjevt---------------if you win a good reputation
Døyr fe, døyr frender ----------------Cattle die, kinsmen die
Døyr sjølv det sama----------------You yourself will also die
Eg veit et som aldreg døyr------------I know one that never dies
dom om daudan kvar---------------the reputation of those who died"

I was able to follow everything except the 6th and 5th lines from the end, after the instruments have stopped. I think the male singer is singing something else here, improvising from the original maybe. There is a lot of emotion that really comes through when you follow the meaning... Moved me to tears. Thank you!

The story is one of singing the dead along an arduous path to some sort of a continuation, separation from the living, and freeing from constraints of the living. It's one last thing one could possibly do for someone who has died. It's easy to dismiss as just a story for those who didn't grow up with it and emotionally invest in this particular one, but it's a model for working through grief. Though there probably is no Odin, this isn't stupid, and behind it lies a greater truth about sympathy toward the common experience, the same now as it was more than 1000 years ago.
