I definitely recommend watching the original video without interruptions, here's the link: • Wardruna and Aurora - ...
    Lyrics: The Way to Hel
    I sought the songs
    I sent the songs
    when the deepest well
    offered drops so mighty
    of Valfather’s pledge
    I know it all, Odin
    where you hid your eye
    Who will sing me
    in the death-sleep sling me
when I walk the road to Hel
    and the tracks I tread
    are cold, so cold
    Early or in fading day
still the raven knows if I fall
When you stand by the gate of Hel
and when you must tear loose
    follow you I shall
across the bridge of Gjöll with my song
You become free from the bonds that bind you
You are free from the bonds that bound you
Show Wardruna some love: / @wardruna

I am native american, and when the 6:39 mark hits, where the song branches between the men's voice and the higher female's voice, it reminds me of out songs. Ancient, tribal music across the world is both beautiful and powerful. There is a purpose to each song and how it is sung. There is a depth of identity and our roots that are lost in music today.

This is Wardruna's best known song and one of it's best performances with Aurora. I was lucky enough to witness one of the first times it was sung in 2012 during Castlest in the Netherlands. It was during the evening with crows flying of a great oaktree under a full moon with the starting of the drum. It was mesmerizing and sacral. A lot of wassailing afterwards. Skål to Wardruna!

    • @erik5820
      @erik5820 Рік тому +12

@@GeographRick most of the song is actually in (a somewhat archaic, true, but still not old norse) "nynorsk". Nynorsk is one of two written forms used in Norway today. Nynorsk is used by approx 10% of the population and is somewhat closer to the original Norwegian than the other written form ("bokmål") used but approx 90 %, which is essentially a 'norwegianized' form of danish.
The last part - the verses on the end after the drumplayer has finished is indeed Old Norse. It is some stanzas (verses, no 76+77) from the "Håvamål" collection of poetry, probably created approx 700-900 AD most likely in Norway, and written down first in Iceland late 12th century.

She is so healing to listen to. And Wardruna... oh my. I had the pleasure to hear them live before the pandemic broke and for the whole concert I cried and cried. I've never done that. HELVEGEN translation.
    Who shall sing me,
    Into deathsleep sling me,
When I on the path to Hel go,
    And this track I tread
Is cold, so cold, so cold.
    I sought the songs,

    Then the deepest well
    Gave me tears so harsh
    From the Slain-father's[1] pledge.
    I know everything, Odin,
To whom you gave your eye.
    Who shall sing me,
    Into deathsleep sling me,
Whence I on the path to Hel go,
    And this track I tread
Is cold, so cold, so cold.
Early or in the day's end,
The raven still knows if I fall.
Once you stand at the gate to Hel
And when you have to tear free,
    I shall follow you
    Over Gjallarbrú[2] with my song.
You will be free from the bonds that bind you,
You are free from the bonds that bound you!
    "Cattle die,
    Friends die,
    So, too, must you die.
    Though one thing
    Never dies;
The fair fame one has earned.
    Cattle die,

@@diofelles Unfortunately it was erased in many ways - yes, to a certain extent it was never written down (runes were not used in manuscripts, as the Germanic tradition was largely oral), but in the forcible conversion of the Germanic Heathens to Christianity that really took off in 1100 A.D., a lot of the mythology and culture was lost or twisted. (I’m Reconstructionist Heathen - trying to follow the footsteps of my ancestors as best I can, and researching what was originally part of the religion and what was put there later as a result of Christian influence).

      @cy-wren2430 3 роки тому +14

@@Henrik46 Yes, you’re right - I have amended my reply to say “Germanic” instead of “Norse”.
No, they probably weren’t introduced peacefully, this is true. But you can’t say “these people also did bad things!” to excuse the bad things you’re doing. That would be like saying “the Jews lost us the war and are responsible for us being poor!” while putting them in gas chambers...wasn’t there someone else that did that at one point?
It took less than a century for the Scandinavian countries to be fully converted through the Christianisation of the kings, who then forced it on the rest of their countries. I would like to point you particularly toward Olaf I of Norway, who tortured and killed pagans and destroyed their temples (as an example - there were more peaceful, insidious conversions as well).
I am a reconstructionist Heathen, which means that I take everything Snorri has written with a grain of salt. Stiklarstadir has been uncovered as a way for the Church to make the legend of Saint Olaf more impressive (he must have fallen in a battle for Christianity), rather than what actually happened. It is more likely, according to historical sources, that Olaf’s party consisted of his central guard and a few people who joined along the way. The other side were UNTRAINED FARMERS. Stiklarstadir is far less about the epic battle Snorri’s saga - it is an excellent study into the propaganda methods of the time surrounding those who have been given sainthood. There is also no evidence of any battleground at Stiklestad, only a couple of residences.

Your excitement to all parts of the music brings me joy. I was thinking about how it seems like Aurora was trying really hard to restrain her hand movements by grabbing the microphone a lot. She is so so expressive when she performs. I would really enjoy seeing you listen more more Aurora. It would be fun to watch someone fall in love with her as so many have.

    Who shall sing me,
    Into deathsleep sling me,
When I on the path to Hel go,
    And this track I tread
Is cold, so cold, so cold.

    I sought the songs,
    I sent the songs.
    Then the deepest well
    Gave me tears so harsh
    From the Slain-father's1 pledge.

    I know everything, Odin,
To whom you gave your eye.

    Who shall sing me,
    Into deathsleep sling me,
Whence I on the path to Hel go,
    And this track I tread
Is cold, so cold, so cold.

Early or in the day's end,
The raven still knows if I fall.

Once you stand at the gate to Hel
And when you have to tear free,
    I shall follow you
    Over Gjallarbrú2 with my song.

You will be free from the bonds that bind you,
You are free from the bonds that bound you!

    "Cattle die,
    Friends die,
    So, too, must you die.
    Though one thing
    Never dies;
The fair fame one has earned.

    Cattle die,
    Friends die,
    So, too, must you die.
    I know one,
    That never dies;
Judgement of a dead man's life.

There’s a beautiful thing to be found within traditional music that I feel a lot of people miss. It is beautiful and the sounds create a story and emotions you never knew you had. But when it comes to music like this, it’s the POWER that strikes me. Music like this reminds us of who we once were and gives us almost a sense of mourning for what humanity has lost these days. So much love for this band and Aurora and for what they bring back into this world

this is why we play and listen to world music from all lands and cultures........remember our ancestors....the song is about the journey to the Viking afterlife ( "Hel" - NOT the Christian Hell" ) and recalling all the people and events that preceded our lives........all things must die, but our reputations live on.......I think the horn is an ancient "Lur"........"too much amazing" is right on !

    • @Necronomous
      @Necronomous Рік тому

Christian hell comes from the name Hel. The name "HELL" was first prounounced in KJV in the 17th century version of the bible. Demonitizing the deathrealm of the aeisir believers, Helheim.
But it ain't the first time. In later texts Hades was mentioned and demonitized, deathrealm of the ancient greek beliefs.
Another example are the demon they call Leviathan. In old jewish mythology it was a sea serpent that protected the ocean, but not only that. The seamen that praised the sea serpent was protected from bad accidents when they where at sea. Like greek's mythological Poseidon.
So yeah, christians took all gods that was praised for protection and demonotized them in the bible.
"Yeah, but you got hell in earlier texts as well." christians yells. Yeah, but not the word HELL itself, it was Hades, Sheol, Gehenna, Tartarus. But no hell in it self.
Gehenna was not a place underneath earth do. It was a valley where crippled people, unwanted children and sick people was burned alive. A place on earth that Jesus saw. But he didn't call it hell. Gehenna itself means wall of fire. The real place that was later called Gehenna are Hinnomvalley.

Aurora is definitely "too much amazing". Every song of hers takes you on a journey into your very heart and soul. As well, she always disappears into the song she is singing, and takes us with her. She always sings with her whole body. (And she normally sings in English, btw) :) This very performance was actually how I discovered Aurora. And, yes, what a performance. I really like Wardruna's music, as well. It definitely stirs up something ancient and lovely in the blood. And, I agree, the visuals on stage were absolutely outstanding.
I had a thought as you described the 6/8 time signature. Our heart has a three step beat, too. No wonder it has that effect, especially with those drums. (Yes, they use ancient instruments).

Their energy, sound, emotion and connection to the music fully engulfs the audience transporting them to a new place and bringing to that place a peace and warmth that is inequivocal. This song is literally asking, who will sing my song of my death to send me to peace... it's about how life isn't possible without death and death is just an pouring for new life.

If you are going to go down the path of Aurora, then an absolute must watch and listen is her live performance of Murder (5,4,3,2,1) from the Nobel Peace Prize concert. You want to talk about emotional and how much she controls that stage during that performance. It's soooo good. Anything from her live is really good.

Yeah, but it is imoprtant that she rea ct to the nobel peace prize (as you said) not the original music video. AURORAS song is as always flawless but the video is not good.

I just watched your video for the first time, I love your reactions. These two together have so much power, they could literally move mountains with their voices. The first time I heard them together I was absolutely floored. Her voice is so soft, yet so powerful, it almost feels like she could reach the heavens if she would let her power flow. I love these two. Thank you for sharing.
