MIDI2LR Custom Mapping Tutorial

- It's finally here! An easy way to learn to map your MIDI controller in MIDI2LR.
I messed up and kept saying forward slash, even right after I said back slash! Remember! Before and After is BACKSLASH on the keyboard (the one right under the backspace key)!!!
Here are some MIDI Controllers I recommend for various setups. Remember that you can actually add as many controllers that you want to have the experience you design.
Lots of Dials (requires a lot of desk space) Behringer BCR-2000:
amzn.to/2z1F0zI
Lots of Buttons (Perfect for mapping a crap ton of develop presets and other button based actions) Behringer CMD Touch TC64:
amzn.to/2xj7HGo
Good Deal on Behringer X-Touch Mini: amzn.to/2ywb5RR
Sticker Paper Used: amzn.to/2sna6k2
On a Mac and need help with the installation process? Check out my tutorial on how to get set up here: • DIY LoupeDeck: MIDI2LR...

Hi Brian. That was one of the best tutorial / overviews I've seen in a long while - no waffle, just useful content at an interesting pace. Cheers!
The perfect tutorial on MIDI2LR. No need for anyone to make another tutorial on this. I was looking for the way to map presets. Found it and so many more functionality. Thank you!
Congrats for this lovely tutorial. Found it very helpful, Thanx. Looking foreward to your next one to getting deeper in.
Thanks Brian. Great MID2LR on X Touch Mini training for this long time LR user who is thinking of going this route.
Just bought a midi touch on the strength of your recommendation and all the hard work you have done bro!!! Keep it up!! Subbed and wishing you all the best!!
Thanks for clear nudge in the right direction, even in minimal use workflow becomes way smoother. Just do it!
Just purchased the mini controller and you are a lifesaver. Thank you very much...now editing football and hockey games will be a lot easier. One more time.....thanks.
Thanks Brian! exactly the information I needed.
Thank you Brian. My X Touch has been sitting on the shelf since Christmas. Just broke it out again.. Great tutorial .
Congrats on the engagement!
I was confused about how to map the controls to Lightroom actions but this video was very clear on how to do this. I'm currently using your settings but eventually I'll want to configure it to my personal workflow. Thanks for the tutorial.
Also, I bought the X-Touch Mini based on your tutorials and how easy it looked to use them. Just thought you'd like to know.
Super glad to hear I was able to help you out! Good call on the XTouch mini. They're really tough to find right now though! I think I drove up demand 😂😂😂
Nice tutorial starting with the basics!! I am ready to set up mine,....Looking forward to the advanced tutorial,.... Thanks :-)
you've always been a teacher ! tiight tut
Brilliant!! Thanks brian. Fantastic tutorial
Really useful tutorial
Excellent tutorial. Thanks :)
The best video I've come across. Your links were absolutely helpful as they had everything in a single file. Instructions were clear and concise. Excited about putting it to use now!
I did have a question: Would it be possible to set the slider to zoom? Would that be advisable? I think I might use it quite frequently for that purpose. If so, how?
Again, thanks for taking the time to help shleps like myself take advantage of tools like this!
Glad I could help you!
Your videos have been a great help for setting up my controller, thank you so much! I'm having issues with the next/prev profile functions, though. If you could make a video about it or offer some help I'd greatly appreciate it.
thanks for a detailed run through, I forgot how to do the custom shortcuts and was stuck of how to do paste from previous which I use a fare bit. I tried ctl+alt+V but didnt work and I done it again and it seemed a lower case v worked so back to normal. :-)
When will you have the advanced mapping tutorial out? I have mine set with the basics from this video, I'd like to create HSL profiles. Thank you for this mapping tut.
I’ve been through at least 10 of these Behringer / Lightroom tutorials and by far this one of the informative videos on this platform.. all you need now is a download link to a profile so we don’t have to do all this mapping *wink for a small fee of course .... great job bro I’ll pick one up instead of waisting $300 on a loop deck,....
I'll throw my profiles up in a link tomorrow 😉
thank you for your help!
Hi Brian! Thanks for this video tutorial. Got my X-Touch mini days ago. Been mapping my frequently used sliders in LR. Wondering if you can put all the HSL on the knobs? Thanks in advance.
thanks man!
Hey, Brian great stuff! This has saved me a lot of time setting up my x-touch mini. I have run into some problems, however, when switching profiles MIDI2Lr keeps crashing. Any thoughts on what can be done?
Thank for all your work on this. Got mine up and running quickly with your help. I do have one question though. Is there a way to use the controller to do the trick where you hold down Alt and adjust the whites & blacks?
superb thanks
when are setting up your limits settings if you use the scroll wheel on your mouse you can dial it in to what ever specific number you like.
So many thanks Brian ! Just a question, how do you configure SYNC function to a button? Have a nice day !
Hi Brian! Thanks a lot for this video tutorial! I X-Touch Mini and it's amazing! Can you please tell me if it's possible to add the "Remove Photo" in a button? I can't find it! Thanks in advance! :)
Thanks for all your informative videos, really appreciate it! I’m setting up my preset controller and I have a question... is there a way to reset the image before applying the next preset. Currently I have a reset button that I have to press each time in between trying the different presets. Is it possible to set up a command with one press of a button to reset and add preset at the same time? I hope you understand 🤔
Hello Brian, thanks for your great videos about MIDI2LR with Lightroom. My question is: since I've mapped my layer A dials, and my layer B dials, how can I use the dials now to do local adjustments with the Adjustment Brush to adjust Highligts, Whites, Blacks, Shadows, Clarity, Exposure, Contrast, etc.? I know I can activate the Adjustment Brush with a button but then, how do I adjust those parameters above with a dial, since they are already mapped to other Basic panel sliders?
Thanks for that! Helped a lot...
Glad it helped! There have been some bugs on the new version of LR/Midi2LR so hopefully you got those kinks worked out by assigning keyboard shortcuts instead!
@@brianlovelace Instead of giving the fish, you taught how to fish! That was the diference. Now I will do my own and use some profiles just to paste some commands, like hue and saturation from the colors.
Amaizing job!!! Thanks a lot for the video. I have a question how do you do to make the light stay on, when you enter to the hue, saturation, Luminance or basic profile mode??? Thanks.
Anybody knows???
Hey Brian, nice video. How do you deal with the fact that your midi knobs are not 360° (ulimited) turnable? Lets say you end up turning the exposure up and go to the next picture. Your Knob is at your end position then. How do you deal with that?
thank you so much
Thank you!!!!
Hi, thanks for the video, has been very helpful. I have a little dumb question, Do you have to keep the MIDI2LR app open in fact to work? becuase when I close it, the controller stop working.
Hi Brian, thats sooo cool, does it woke with capture one 12? is there a possibility to make it work work C1? any ideas? Greets
Ok my first question was wanting to know if you could program one of the buttons to change the settings of the dials on top or is it just once you set the dials up you can only change them in a different profile I know if you're using the controller as a midi controller for music you could push buttons to change some of the dial settings for different program effects
Brian, amazing tutorial, thank you so much. I purchased a Pusher Labs Xtremist Controller, along with their Pfixer software. My question is twofold: 1. Which do you think is better, MIdi2LR, or their Pfixer software? And 2. I have tried to get the Xtremist to do what i can do on a keyboard, which is to push the Option key while moving the slider for masking in the sharpening, so as to show you where you will be applying the sharpening, in black and white over your image. Also, I would want to hold the Shift key down, while double clicking on the black or white slider, to have LR set your black or white point. I can never get any midi controller to let me set that up, and have to resort to my keyboard during that point in my editing. Any help would be so appreciated.
Thanks Brian!
My X Touch will arrive tomorrow, can't wait to set it up :-)
Is there a way to use the slider? Maybe to zoom? Don't want to use it for adjustments 'cause it's not motorised.
Thanks!
Michiel van Gorp you can totally adjust it! Just not for soon :(
Hey thanks for the video is there anyway that can make my Lightroom day what I’m adjusting like yours does. I think if I had that setting turned on I’d be able to learn my mapping min faster
hi there! thanks to this video I've finally got installed my x-touch mini quite as I wanted, except for the ENTER key, been trying every shortcut but no luck. Do you know if there is a way to map it in a key? I don't know if it this because mi LR is in spanish but I have some problems with J key also, it won't work ;(
Thanks again and greetings from Perú!
Hey! I bought the XTouch Universal board (with motorized faders) and it looks like the Fader Bank buttons (similar to Layer buttons on the mini) just behave like midi buttons and don't switch to my next bank of faders. Do you have any suggestions for how to trigger the bank changeover?
Thanks - I love your software. Do you have a donation link?
Wow this tutorial helped so much, can you use the KORG Nanokontrol Studio with MIDI2LR program?
You can definitely use and program something like that, but what I found is that it's much better to use a controller that has encoders, meaning you don't have to physically reset the position of the slider or knob each time you edit a different photo.
Can I also use it for obs for switching
scenes? or to start applications
Bravo!!!
Very good tutorial, thank you.
One thing you didn't cover.
Could encoders be programmed to work in combination with buttons.
I suppose two major scenarios users might be interested in:
1 normally encoder adjust some parameter, when button pressed an encoder rotated then same parameter adjuster with higher precision?
2. suppose I have midi keyboard with only 1 encoder and many buttons. Would it be possible that button press and hold defines which parameter encoder will be adjusting?
Could those scenarios be configured?
I have a question,i don't know if you or anyone else will ever answer me,but I try...In the develop module,if I zoom in the photo with "z" key on the keyboard and then press and keep pressed the space bar and move the mouse keep pressed the left key,I can move the photo to make better adjustment like brush ecc...Is there a way to set the space bar on one of the behringer keys,so I can press that key instead of the space bar?
How did you get two Controllers to work. Both my X touch mini's use same buttons.
hey i use tone curve alot do you think i need 2 x touch ?
bro could you do a video showing what the different presets you have does??? thanks
Any reason why you skipped over profiles? This seems to be very useful to give the knobs another set of settings beyond bank A and B. Am I missing something?
hi. i successfully implemented the MIDI2LR tool. and used it now on several session. the last time i startet LR, it didnt work. i found out, that when i dial on the first knob (top left), MIDI2LR shows it up as CC16. and for CC16 i have nothing mapped, because initially this knob was recognized as CC1 and i mapped exposure to that. it seems that there is the 2nd layer active, but neither the button for Layer A nor Layer B is orange (both off), in order to swithc laers - however MC Mode is on.
is midi2lr for any lightroom??
i have lr4
thanks!!
It's been years since I've used the midi controller. It was great for a while but then with updates to LR I never updated my midi controller. Now that I don't use it how do I uninstall it? Every time I open Lightroom the Midi2LR window pops up and I'm lost on how to remove it.
Hi, how can I connect and use two MIDI2LR?? Thanks!
Thanks for the quick response on my other question. I have 2 more questions first is there a way to asign a button to change the settings on the dials like if you program a dial for enable color adjustments, I see it toggles the sliders on and off.
The other question is I have the X Touch and when I change to layer B the last 3 buttons on the top row have to be double clicked to work, is ther a way to fix that or is it a bug in my controller?
Thank you
Hey there, I'm not sure what you're asking in the first question... but for the second, no that isn't a bug, it's just that MIDI2LR doesn't have a way of signaling to the controller to turn lights on and off yet. You can try different settings in the X-Touch Editor (toggle, momentary, etc) to try to change the way those buttons react, but it might not work. Give it a try!
Good Video. But, how i can set "Remove Photo" in Midi2LR?
Hi I need help please I can't connect with the plugin to lightroom . Message appears saying is working but it not connected that is the message under the plugin. On the app midi2lr Is not connected is red
hey Brian just wondering is there a way to change the amount each click of the dial effects the amount ie right now the temperature dial i have programmed changes the temperature buy 400 degrees k is there a way to reduce that?
So because MIDI only has values from 0-127 the only way you're going to get around that 400 kelvin jump per click is going into the Midi2LR settings and change the min and max temps to your average working conditions, for me this is typically 3200k to 7700k which makes the jumps in the 50k per click range
Hi - Old thread but I hope someone can help. Two questions: 1) What if I want to assign the delete key via MIDI2LR, is there a way to do that? 2) Is there a way to assing increasing/decreasing the crop size on a dial? Both can be done in LoupeDeck+ and I am hoping to do the same via MIDI2LR on my x-touch mini. Thank you!
Thanks for your tips! Very helpful! Is there a way for me to program Midi2LR on my Behringer X Touch Mini to CROP in with the turn of a knob? I've looked everywhere. Thanks!
Unfortunately, as far as I know there isn't :(
Brian Lovelace Thanks for the reply
Hi Brian, thank you so much for sharing this tutorial. Very helpful! But I am wondering about the 'Other...' setting in the Midi2LR options. The sliders to bracket the limits of temperature, tint, etc. do not appear in my options. But they are really helpful, especially regarding the correction of tilt. Do you have any idea, why the sliders do not appear? I am using Midi2LR (Ver. 2.3.0.1) on LR6 on a Mac. Cheers
Jochen Hürtgen make sure that you have the "Develop" panel open rather than Library or Print open. These options won't show up if you're in a different panel other than the Develop panel. Weird, I know. Let me know if this worked!
Yes, Brian, thank you. Now it works! That was easy, if you know :)
Woohoo! Glad it worked for you!
I'm running in lots of problem on the PC... I CANOT SAVE or go in to option or anything...
i only can load setting ...
So...I Edith all on my mac and open the file in notepad and program it old school…
I need you to explain me how to set the other layer...so I can use the colors (SHL)
hope in cleare with me lame English/
im using Behringer xtouch mini.
thank you
Brand new computer. All apps loaded just fine. I create a subfolder to save the profiles in and in the Midi2lr app I click save. While a requester pops up and I create a file which is really never created, I try to turn dials and push buttons but nothing ever happens. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated
I sent another question but I see it's down below farther so I'm going to repost it here
Ok my first question was wanting to know if you could program one of the buttons to change the settings of the dials on top or is it just once you set the dials up you can only change them in a different profile I know if you're using the controller as a midi controller for music you could push buttons to change some of the dial settings for different program effect
Thanks again
yeah the only way to do that is through profiles :/
Any news on that advanced tutorial, with info on Profiles?
Thought I'd figured out how to do profiles as it seemingly worked on 2.7.0.4 but on updating Midi2LR to the latest 2.8.1 whenever I press the button assigned to another profile it just crashes on the first time, restart server, press it again and it ignores the request for Profile 2 but doesn't crash. Not sure if this is a bug or I've set it up wrong.
I realise you are not the developer, so can't help if it is a bug, but any info on how you've done your profiles would be awesome!
Actually.....having another mess around, I've found that using Next/Previous Profile works and doesn't crash 2.8.1 like assigning a button to an individual profile does..so problem over, or should I say a work around is found.
Would still love to see a profiles vid though just to confirm what I've done is about right:-)
is this also possible at Premiere Pro?
Does this work with photoshop and illustrator?
hey some help?the midi2lr it works for 1 hour then it doesn't start up
I need help!!!! I switch from window to mac and everything work but not the keyboard shortcuts I programed. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.
Great and thank. Have a question on the BCR2000. I cannnot get the Midi2LR to see the F 2&3 Encoder. Can't get the BC-Editor to change the CC code to a different number. Thanks
Hm. I'm not quite sure. I've heard that the BRC2000 sometimes has messed up encoders. I would reach out to Behringer to see if they can help you diagnose it.
Thx. Did but will see what they say. The BC editor will not run in Win10. So back to Win7 to play. Just got the BCR2000 today. All working cept the 2 Encoders
Thanks Brian. I figured it out and have moved on. May even do a video showing how it is done. Thanks
Will this work with Lightroom 4
Will this work with davinci resolve?
using my AKAI MPK249 would be more than enufff
hi great video iv done it iv bought 2 and getting it set up, but the keyboard short cut don't work no matter what I set them too? Any thoughts, im on a Mac?
Hey there, is your Lightroom set to English? I've heard there are issues when it's set to another language.
thanks for quick reply and yes its set to English.
Hmmm... can you send a screenshot of the keyboard mappings you have set, upload it to Imgur and link it here? imgur.com/upload
Brian Lovelace thanks it’s yours that you did and I followed your instructions. Iv Googled it and it’s because of lr classic cc and I believe midi2lr are trying to fix it, on the next version which works but it’s still in bata so crashes a bit. Thank you for time tho great videos too.
Question: when it imported my presets did it automatically change Ctrl to Cmd?
How did you adjust the Hue, Saturation and Luminance with the knob control on layer B?
So that's a more advanced tutorial that I'm working on. Essentially map out your controller, then map out 4 buttons as Profile 1, 2, 3, 4. Finish mapping out your controller, then duplicate and rename each profile to match its function for what you want the profile to do... so mine were essentially called Basic.xml, Basic_Hue.xml, Basic_Saturation.xml, and Basic_Luminance.xml. Now click Load in the MIDI2LR server, then Load up the Basic_Hue.xml. Do all of your changes to make each dial change the corresponding hue color, along with the click as the reset. Save. Do this for each H/S/L Profiles you've created. Once everything is saved correctly all you need to do is go into File -> Plugin Extras -> MIDI2LR Options -> Profiles, then assign each Profile filename (the .xml files) into each corresponding Profile (1-4). Once you save this and exit you should be able to push the buttons that you mapped to Profile 1-4 and they will open up the corresponding Profile .xml file, allowing you to adjust HSL. Hope this helps!
This is what im looking for lol! I can then hit a button, that then turns activates the hue panel, and each dial changes a colour. Perfect!
I would love to see this video as I too would like to do that but unsure.
Thanks so much for the video and this comment. Its sorted out all my problems!!
@@brianlovelace Ahhhh you posted this 3 years ago, but I am really not following your description on how you map the HSL adjustments. I really wish you had made that advanced video. ugh I've mapped out my controller, but such a pity I can't get this last part =(
Congratulation
Thank you so much!
having some issues. same board. when i press everything, its all in channel 1. also when i change layers, they are registering as the same buttons as in layer A. can anyone help?
also my button lights stay on, i'm a mess. I tried messing with the x-touch editor, but i don't know how to save it and what not
hi mate. i have a pfixer minimal board. im assigning the functions to the buttons. when i press a button it stays lit. ie if i has assigned the next photo to a button, if i press it the button stays lit. i have to then press it again for the lihjy to go out.
Greg Coltman that all needs to be changed I'm the X Touch settings. It's set to toggle, not momentary.
ah, so i need a windows machine to do that ....Thanks for coming back to me. Will get there eventually. I think im going to buy a new board so that I can label it myself as I already have a keyboard map overlay for functions I use occasionally. I have already found that the one from Pfixer doesn't work how I want it to. (and one of the encoders may be faulty as I turn it clockwise and it doesn't always pick up the adjustment, or sometimes makes a negative adjustment.)
For the life of me I can't figure out how to program "enter" as a custom button? Or the arrow keys?
Why would you not want to cull in lightroom?
Hi Mark. I've ran across a weird issue with my behringer using lightroom. Just did the latest update today as they moved some things around like the Haze filter. Was playing with the new profiles and stuff but noticed some of the buttons on my midi wouldn't do anything. Found out I lost the mapping of the buttons that were mapped to presets. I remapped the preset buttons but now it doing something totally crazy.
Say I have a preset that say "Noise reduction 15%". If I use my mouse attached to my computer and click on that preset it works perfectly fine and sets the NR to 15 and everything else stays where I had set it. BUT If I click on the button on my midi, mapped to that preset, it does set it to 15% --- But it resets every other adjustment I've made to "Zero". It's like I hit the Reset button on the photo I'm working on. I can't figure out what is going on, can you please help. Thanks in advance.
Carl Bradley oh Lord. I haven't used it since I updated today... I'm sure Rory who makes midi2lr will be updating soon...
Carl Bradley oh and I've also heard this is a problem with the Lightroom update too... this is going to be a bumpy ride to figure out all the kinks with the software 😬
Brian Lovelace Brian, sorry for calling you Mark - I was a bit flustered, lol. I'll keep my ringer on waiting on you pros to come up with a solution for us. Thanks partner.
Carl Bradley no worries! I totally get it. It's been a confusing morning for us all 😄
Hi Brian, anything news on a fix for the "Presets" canceling other adjustments already made to the photo?
Does midi2lr work with the latest lightroom?
yes sir!
Do you have any ideea why any of my key shortcuts do nothing? I did exactly like you but is not working for me.
Alin Chiriac what version of LR & MIDI2LR are you on?
Brian Lovelace I had the midi2lr clicked insted of lightroom. Now works perfectly. However do you have any ideea how can i mapp an esc or enter button? Thank you for the response.
Alin Chiriac Totally! Just type in escape or enter into the key map space! Cheers!
I really appreciate your help but this isn't working for me. and really don't know why. Don't know the exact version but it is up to date for sure.
What controller are you trying to map?
Control that does not working on me:
Keyboard shortcut keys
Copy and paste
I'm using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 9.1
MIDI2LR Software v3.5.0.3
MAC
Anyone can help?
