  • Thanks for checking out my video! I forgot to mention it in the video, but I have also included a PSD of the controller overlay that I created so you can tweak it to your own needs! I just printed it on sticker paper and cut out the design with an exacto knife and a straight edge.

    Just wanted to thank you for a couple things: 1) walking me through this life-changing workflow boon. 2) resisting the temptation to introduce your video with stock music and homemade, faux-corporate logo. I was bracing myself so hard for the impact and you were kind enough to refrain. Thank you.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you. It works! Mr. Lovelace I really appreciate this video. I ordered the Behringer X Touch Mini and thought it would work out of the box. I did get the knobs to work with MIDI2LR but that was all. This video explained it all! Now to print the labels. For about $60 I have a product that could have cost me $180! You saved me $120! Thanks again.

      Justinurban03 I've actually changed a lot of my mappings from what I have here. I now have even more Develop Presets and I've changed my Flag/Unflag to both layers A&B along with adding a Reject mapping. I've also mapped another profile for my laptop so I only have to bring one controller with me and I'll still be able to use my Develop Presets.

      Of course. I'm actually looking to change some things from the way I have it set up right now too. I'm not a big fan of the "Pick" feature being on the second layer since I usually do all of my "picking" right after I've edited a photo. I think it's all going to be a work in progress. MIDI2LR seems to be offering some pretty cool features now. Should be interesting to see how it grows and develops.

    Thanks a lot for this!
    Loaded it up into my x-touch mini and everything works! though I found small hiccup - when I'm on layer B, following 4 buttons work as toggles : info, lights, left, right. Meaning the light up and stay lit till you press them again. Basically I have to press them 2 times in order to make them work. Fixed them by changing parameters in x-touch mini editor :)

    Hey Brian, wondering if you've got this issue before: when going to layer B and tapping on saturation key to adjust some colors then going back to layer A then trying to tap on escape it does not work anymore thus needing to re-launch LR to make it work again. Also not sure if you have run into this 2nd issue as well is that my auto sync in LR does not work anymore, I always need to hit "SYNC" so that I can apply the adjustments to all the other pictures that were selected. Thank you and Happy New Years!

    I couldn´t find your video teaching how to program the device to work with presets. Have you recorded that video? I really would like to learn that.
    I also would like to know if it is possible to program the device to select presets in the Brush mode. I use this a lot for dodge and burning and other presets using a Wacom tablet and I think it would be handy to select those presets using the midi controller

    So far I have just one X-Touch Mini and I am using profiles to apply multiple assignments on the fly. One question: You have to double push the encoders to do a reset. Why? Did you change the controller switches to Toggle? All my controller switches are set to Momentary and therefore I have to push these just once to do a reset.

    Hi Brian! This is really qualitative and very kind of you to do this everything :) Really, thank you. I would like to use only one X-Touch, but have all the 2nd X-Touch Options too, but is there a option in MIDI2LR to somehow copy paste the mappings of the 2nd Controller to the first in a layers of a buttons on the 1st without manually program each knob? Thank you in advance!

    • @brianlovelace
      @brianlovelace  7 років тому

      Hey there! No worries, I hope it gives you a good launching point. In short, there is no shortcut to copy over the mappings to board one, however, if you create another profile and remap another key on the board to be solely for presets, you should be golden (say, get rid of the Blue label and turn it into "Profile 5." Program out another profile with all of your presets and mappings for vignette, dehaze, and whatever else you want, stick it in the Profile 5 slot in MIDI2LR options, then remap the key I have marked as a Blue label and map it as "Profile 5." Remember that your Profile buttons have to stay the same throughout each Profile so that you can switch back and forth between them no matter which profile you have loaded up. So say you remap that Blue Key, you'd have to remap it in Profile 1, 2, 3, & 4 if you wanted to access it at any time. This could help consolidate your workflow, but then again, it adds another layer of complexity that might hinder your workflow. Let me know if this information is helpful or if you have any other questions!

I tried adding the mapping files and the mini profiles as described but Lightroom does not recognise these files and give an error. What am I doing wrong?
    thanks
    Steve

    Great Vid. I'm so torn!! I Purchased a SCF2000 and a MiniMidi (which was supposed to be a gift for someone else)... But the controller is quite clunky. I also have a touchpad that I might be able to program instead of a second Midi.. Anyways, thanks for this vid, its getting me closer to a decision (sell the big clunky thing and chill with the midi or not).

      magda zofia honestly I really love my setup with two of the XTouch Minis. It's pretty sweet beacause they're small, have digital (no-hard-stop) encoder knobs and quite a few buttons. Plus when I travel I can just take one of them to edit on the plane with! Makes life so much quicker and easier!

    Thank you for creating this video! Can you also map and activate the adjustment brush, radial filter and graduated filter? I use these a lot!

    • @brianlovelace
      @brianlovelace  7 років тому

      I have heard rumors that you can! Let me check really quick...

    • @brianlovelace
      @brianlovelace  7 років тому

      Okay, so it looks like you can... what you need to do is map out "Local Adjustments" and select what you use (exposure, contrast, highlights, whites, etc). Whichever local adjustment is OPEN in the develop panel will be adjusted. So if you have the Radial Filter open and use the Local Exposure Adjustment dial mapped, it will take the Radial Filter exposure down. Does that make sense? I haven't found a need for this, but if you want me to I can work on a tutorial.

    • @danielledereeder
      @danielledereeder 7 років тому

      Thank you for your explanation. It means that I still have to activate the local adjustment tool I want to use. I am not sure if I am happy with that. I am not using a midi controller yet, so there is no need for a tutorial right now.

    Hello there, I have a few questions about the sticker sheet.
    Could you please tell me whether this is meant to be two different controls or one? 'LENS CORR
    VIGN AMT'
    I am not sure where the colour/black and white label is supposed to go?
    Have you found a use for the slider (if not, how would that be assigned?)
    Also,
    Could you please confirm the function of ^H, ^S/L, RAD and J-Trick? Why are there two J-Tricks on the labels?
    Thank you for your help in advance.

    Hi Brian, of all the videos and articles I've read in order to set-up my device, I found yours the most helpful. I have set up an X-touch Mini and I love it. I'd say, there's at least a 4X-5X improvement in productivity-and I'm only just getting used to this. Thank you for doing this detailed video!
    I have a question regarding the H/S/L panel profiles setup:
    1. Is it important to setup these button controls as 'toggle' instead of 'momentary' in the X-touch editor? Or is this only aesthetics?
    2. One of the usable mapping for the fader would be to have the brush size/diameter mapped to it. Do you know if there's a way to map the brush size to the fader-globally? Do you have any other suggestions for the fader?
    Thanks again! Enjoyed your video. Cheers!

    • @brianlovelace
      @brianlovelace  6 років тому

      Rahul M thank you so much! I'm glad to hear it help you out! So the difference between toggle and momentary is just the way the device lights up. Even though it's kind of a pain in the butt I felt that toggle was a better solution for me even though I have to turn off the light when switching profiles. It's really up to you how you want to have your controller setup. I didn't even think of napping brush size to the slider! I don't know if it's possible, but I'll do some research and let you know! Thanks again for watching my video and leaving me a positive comment! I really appreciate it!

    • @rm4x
      @rm4x 6 років тому

      Whoa, thanks for the super fast reply, Brian! I somehow had the idea that the toggle/momentary was connected with panel switching. Thanks for clarifying!
      I've been playing with the X-touch editor settings and it's indeed fun! I searched a bit on the MIDI2LR Google group as well as their GitHub page, but am yet to see an implementation for the fader.
      My editing workflow is a little bit different and mostly use one or two custom presets. I started off with your mappings and templates and came up with a stripped down version. Here's my device setup, if you're interested :) www.dropbox.com/s/5hhed35pegfwdwb/xtouch.jpg?dl=0 Main difference here is that the buttons are exactly the same in both layers A and B. Only the encoder knobs control different sliders.
      As I'm more comfortable with the device, I think I'll add more! I'm yet to add the HSL panels and maybe sharpening, NR and transform controls as panels.
      Also, I cull and rate photos exclusively using PhotoMechanic (way faster!), so I could remove all those controls from the X-Touch.
      By the way, your photography work is awesome! I especially loved the candid wedding photos!
      Thanks and cheers!

    Hi Brian, great vid. How would I go about moving, replacing certain functions in your setup. Like for instance I want to use the way you use a button to reassign the top dials(H/L/S for the colors) but on a different buttons.
    Also I want to use that same trick/Process to make a button so I can Have my dials on top go- Temp - Tint - Exp - Cont - HL - Shadows - Whites - Blacks and then hit button(Similar to Hue/Sat/Lum trick) and switch the first 3 dials to Clarity - Vibrance - Saturation.
    Or do you know of a tutorial to teach how to make these special functions, Short cut keys?
    I hope you can understand what I am trying to say, very hard to explain .
    Thank You,
    RJ Courtney

    Incredible useful video. Clear sound and image. Not completely loading your files into my brand new X Touch Mini yet, because I want to get to learn it first - also because I have only one device. Couple of quick questions: When I go to MIDI2LR options and go to "Develop presets" tab where you can chose your presets and their number..... a lot of presets of mine are not appearing. Is there some sort of limit to the amount of presets or are certain characters (I have a map called "_wedding" for example) not allowed and they won't show up? I have not found out why they are not showing. Second question. I saw your "Other" tab and saw that your Temperature Limit is different than mine. Mine goes from -100 to 100. Yours is following LR logic: 2000 to 50000. How did you do that? Is there some easy edit or option to change this? Or is this part for the firmware you changed with the Touch Mini edit program? Last question: any function applied to the fader? Don't seem to work, because it has not minus-zero-plus value way of changing, like the encoders. You have to manually guess where "zero" is.

    • @brianlovelace
      @brianlovelace  7 років тому

      Alright! Let's start from the beginning... I would definitely load in my presets if I were you! You don't need two boards in order to use them... it will just ignore the mappings I have set to my second board. In terms of Develop Presets they should be in there, you'll just have to scroll through all of your other presets to access each one (pain in the ass, I know). So say you want to fill Develop Preset 1 with, say "User Preset 1." If you have other presets, you'll have to scroll all the way to the bottom, in alphabetical order, to select it. Once you click it in the scroll window, all you have to do is click OK at the bottom and map out your key to that develop preset number. In terms of your Temperature limit, that's a tough one. Are you sure you're not looking at the Tint limits? I know the tint has a default limit of -100 to 100. Other possibility... are you on a JPG image when it's saying -100 to 100 under temperature? If you are, try switching to a raw image and then reopening up the MIDI2LR options panel. If you figure it out, I highly recommend that you change the values of the Temperature limit to 2500 to 12000, Tint from -50 to 50, Exposure from -3 to 3, and straighten angle -25 to 25 so that your encoders are more accurate as you spin them. I have not applied anything to the fader due to its lack of motorization. I just couldn't find a use where I'd want to be going through and manually having to reset to zero, exactly as you have mentioned. You can definitely map something to it, but it will honestly just add another layer of complexity to your editing which you don't really need. I hope my insight has helped! Please share this video with your nerdy photographer friends :)

    Question, I am using MIDI2LR to edit programing (on mac, but did the PC parts). It seems that my settings for keys/knobs reset randomly when I restart LR. Have you run into this?

    • @brianlovelace
      @brianlovelace  7 років тому

      It really depends on how you're using it. I like my setup because I can literally just throw my controller in my camera bag and edit on the go, which is super useful. You *might* get more control out of the BCR2000, or the full sized X-Touch, but it's unlikely seeing as you'd still have to map several profiles to achieve different things (like the hue, sat lum profiles on my setup). I hope this answered your question. Let me know if you have any more :)

      If you want a lot of buttons, not sliders, just attach one of those Behringer Launchpad things and map it. That's what I was thinking about, but MIDI2LR doesn't support enough develop presets to make it worth it at this point.

    Hi, couple of questions on what is a superb tutorial.Why do you use 2 controllers, is purely that the amount of items you want to control is too much for 1 controller?How easy is it to change the mappings. ie if I only have one controller, I want to assign my presets (I mainly only use 4 presets. 2 colour and 2 B&w). Thanks

    • @brianlovelace
      @brianlovelace  7 років тому

      It's technically not too many, I feel like it would just be more confusing if I added more profiles to one controller. That would require an advanced profile mapping. I made a tutorial but the audio sync messed up and I haven't had a chance to re-do it. I'll try to find some time this time to create a video for everyone to check out and learn about mapping for MIDI2LR.

      So load the profile you want to change up on your board by pushing it, then go into the MIDI2LR server (the separation application window that runs along side Lightroom)... That profile will be loaded and ready to do your remapping... From there, just save the profile and your changes will be done! Make sure not to switch profiles while you're remapping or else you'll lose your changes. I hope this helps!
