Good video btw… I always enjoy them.
Not everyone can effectively handle a micro-9 so I'm extremely happy to see more of the slightly larger compact 380 pistols joining the CCW market. I even bought a Sig P365-380 when it first came out and I like it so much that it's my go-to EDC...except on really cold winder days when I carry a 9mm HK VP9S 'cause I feel I still need that extra "umph" to get good penetration through heavy coats and such. All that said, I'm thrilled Ruger made this gun!
I have this and a Hellcat. While the Hellcat is my favorite handgun this is more practical for self defense. Easy Rack and no kickback. As easy as a video game
I bought one of these for my wife and never could get her to shoot it. We have a visiting nurse that rents from us and is 25 and has never owned or shot a gun before. She asked me to take her to a range and show her how to safely use a gun. She shot several of my pistols. LCPII 380, P365 9MM, Kimber 1911 45, Taurus G3C 9mm, Glock 19X 9MM and finally the Security 380. She shot all of them surprisingly well, helped she took archery in high school, but she zeroed in on that Security 380 and was killing it. We couldn't find her one locally in stock so she talked me into seller her this one. I included some Underwood Defender ammo and she is good to go.
I think this is a fantastic choice for any shooter because even if you don't need it right now chances are that sometime in the future you will need it because of injuries and such.
And especially for a concealed it’s works well and isn’t to bulky or heavy as well as less recoil than a 9mm so for less experienced shooters easier to get used to and use in a serious situation if need be. Agree with you!
Nice shooting with that little guy in the intro! I'm surprised .380 seems to be making such a comeback, I thought the high-cap micro 9 era would make that round even less relevant. That said I guess, even with the Shield EZ/Eq out there, there aren't really "easy-rack", "micro" pistols out there since those S&Ws are slim but bigger. And if you're looking for a light slide, I guess you'd probably prefer .380's lower recoil in such a tiny gun as well.
Just traded my beloved S&W bodyguard for this little gem. Best feeling 380 I ever held. The light rack slide and 15+1 were the deal sealer . I like the beefer security 9 feel in a 380 and just ordered another 15 round mag so with HORNANDY 90 gr CDA , Thugs beware.
So many .380s coming out lately I wonder if we’ll get a Taurus GX4 .380 variant next. I’d love a .380 Mossberg MC2sc but given it’s not a big seller that’s probably not going to happen. Anyway thanks for the great in depth videos!
I've never known anyone that says 380ACP isn't lethal to stand and take a round or 2 down range. Like my military friend says, everybody's an expert, till it comes time.
I'm surprised there was no size comparison to what would obviously be one of the main competitors to this firearm. Notably, the m&P shield EZ 380 hopefully you will do a side by side review of those two in the future.
I love Ruger, and this gun looks sharp. I think this one might be good for my wife. The only con of this pistol is that the pin needs to be removed in order to take it apart for cleaning or servicing. In 2023, you'd think all semiautomatic pistols would have a take down lever instead of the pin because it's much easier to deal with and doesn't have to worry about losing it.
@@RoadKing-ky2bs honestly if they just re released the p series pistols I don't think they'd have any issues. A compact .380 stainless p series gun with all the common sense shit in it would probably be able to seriously compete. Also, when I say common sense I mean the original features, not cheapened. Not some stupid marijuana induced lunacy.
Me, too. I'm a fan of .380, and of Ruger. But NOT of those tiny LCP's; those are way too snappy for my arthritis. This one, though, looks doable. I'm saving up. And I really like that it seems to be unusually accurate for .380. Most reviews I've seen bar one, the op is able to shoot it well. And in the exception to that rule, his wife shot it well and chose it over the others. I like what I've seen.
Also, 100fps or more speed out of the longer barrel, according to Chrono and gel tests I have seen! That is a huge help for the 380! I bet almost everyone shoots this more accurately too!
Ruger knocked it out of the park with the Lite rack Security 380. Designed for hand strength/dexterity compromised shooters, petite or elderly ,carpel tunnel folks, arthritis ,etc,. I read about one Guntuber who said his store had sold one to a guy with 2fingers! The newer 380 15+1 market which seemed to be dominated earlier by Bersa Thunder plus is finally really gotten competition now. S&W has their improved slightly larger, lite rack, 9mm "Equalizer" as well, but it has the dam grip safety, which is a huge miss for people with hand problems/strength issues IMHO. The Rugers slightly larger size frame and longer 3.42" barrel over the LCP, are sorely needed for accuracy, and for 100FPS more speed, over the 2.8" barreled Ruger LCP's for example. LCP's are so tiny, short and small that most average shooters need to train often, to shoot them well. Lets face it, many CCW holders don't train often. Some do, but many do not. This could be a huge life safer for these folks. The smartly designed safety is a huge win on this Ruger as in Easy Off / Harder to put on. All safeties should be that way IMHO. I bet they sell trainloads of these.
Optics on pistols is completely unnecessary, unless you're a pro shooter at a shooting competition, otherwise you look like a fool with an optic on a pistol and I will be the guy at the range laughing directly at you. If you can't hit your target from short distance using iron sites then you probably shouldn't be carrying

Fairly easy and the more you load it the smoother it gets I’ve had mine for some months now but after shooting a couple hundred rounds it’s like butter🤌
Yes, that's a strangely-shaped feed ramp, narrow at the entrance. It may not have caused a problem for this review, but I wonder why Ruger did that? And I wonder, as well, about the durability of those aluminum (?) frame rails - and what other internal components may have been built with lowest cost as a priority?
Well I’d also say the aluminum is for even if it’s minuscule is lighter than other options out their so maybe a little bit of both but can’t really say for the narrow entrance although mine hasn’t had any problems after a couple hundred rounds and keeping it clean after every time of shooting it. I’m just that guy that cleans after every session. Obviously when you first buy it’s a little less broken in but that’s somewhat to be expected. After a couple hundred rounds though I’m not having any problems with it. She works well I’ve surpassed a few hundred rounds now I’m just having fun with it🤣🤣 even when you rapid fire it she’s working nice
Ruger seems to be moving hard into the really low-priced market for pistols. The quality is below traditional Ruger standards but you're not paying for it either, so it's fair. If you want something a bit more tight and right, you have to move up the food chain. Still, while my LCP MAX falls into the cheap but functional category, I do carry it as a pocket option. This security 380 looks like a branch off the same tree, functional but cheap.
And I mean the lifetime warranty as long as you are the gun owner for like 30-40 extra bucks saves you all the heartache if you have any problems so for the price and for how consistent and reliable it is can’t beat that man
Agreed but for the price I can also say that what you’d likely spend on getting the slide fitted for a sight you’d have spent on another handgun with a sight already built in maybe a little more but for a consistent well built gun for affordable prices I can’t say that them not putting a sight on it was a bad choice. Just not a choice that suited you the best
@@ontheside5942 which I’m totally for and am looking at getting my sec .380 adjusted for one just for fun as well but my other fear is that I won’t be able to see the iron sight we’ll in very dark areas obviously situations in which you need it in very dark areas is rare but in very dark areas I would argue not much beats a red dot so there still are plenty of uses for red dots just not as often but all in all do what suits you man as long as your having fun
No red dot mount? No go, for these old eyes. I can't imagine pulling one of these in anger and then having to ask for time to find and don my reading glasses.
Just like with a plethora of the handpistols that are out to keep it affordable they didn’t do that but I mean if you pay the extra money that you’d have spent on another gun. It is a very good and consistent gun then idk why that’s such a big deal also I get it if your eyesight isn’t as good as others you shouldn’t expect them to cater to every single person. Like for example for glocks you have to send them in or get a whole kit with a slide that can attach a sight it shouldn’t be all that big of a deal but to each it’s own ig
Nothing wrong with aluminum rails my sig p229 in 9mm one of 6 sigs i own from the 1990s lower frame is aluminum alloy with over 14 thousand rounds on it and is now on it's 4th or 5th recoil factory spring with an average velocity 9mm at 1190fps . I just got this sec 380 this past Monday and absolutely love it. Please note the take down pin is very easy to misplace if not reinstalled into the frame right away as i found out ruger is sending me an replacement even after I finally found the original one. I'm loading 125gn 380 acp at 800 fps for it and it's hell on wheels now because it's not a direct blowback but a breached delay recoil design. My 380 125 loads will penetrate 3 inches of wood. Yes right thur a 2x4.
@@TADDs101 Bersa's Thunder and Thunder Plus 380's have had aluminum frames /slides, and been in constant production since 1995 as well. You gotta remember that slide isn't really moving that fast, Just keep em lubed and she will probably outlast most folks easily. If your shooting competition and thousand and thousands of rounds per year , Then you may want steel frames/slides. Alum slides would only last those guys a few to several years instead of a lifetime.
Why doesn't anyone mention the Ruger Security 380 has an extended 15 round clip, in addition I haven't seen one review of the Baretta Cheetah 80X cal.380
Love this fun. Wished I saw this before buying a different one. For those uneducated on that lever in the trigger, it IS NOT a fun safety. It is a DROP SAFETY. So All the other drop safety features everyone is adding with the piston in the slide and all, and not needed. So, when you buy any gun that does not have a manual safety, it has NO SAFETY when that gun is in your hand. Nobody is ever going to pull the trigger with their fingernail. Which is the only way to avoid that trigger lever, so again, it is not safe unless you have a manual safety.
biggest POS I've ever bought. About 80% of the time the pistol won't go into battery and the cartridge is stuck halfway into battery. Yes it's both mags, yes I've tried different ammo, yes it's been cleaned and lubed, and, because there's always one, NO I'm not limp wristing. I fired it from a brace just to prove it to myself. Going back to Ruger but I'll be selling it once it's back. I've lost all faith in ruger after this. I'm not sure they even have QC at this point.
Seems like you should’ve gotten the warranty as faulty machining happens but of the multiple people that have this and posted reviews have 0 problems so again unless it operator error in some sort or it had a fault in the machining which does happen things like that happen in all Industries so I mean seems like you should’ve gotten the warranty. It’s only like 30-40 bucks extra and as long as you are the owner it’s a lifetime warranty. You seem like the kind of guy to buy something and when they ask you if you want the warranty you say no as if mistakes and faults don’t happen🤦♂️🤣
And yes I do own it and no I have not had the same problems so again getting the warranty for that few extra bucks is so worth it sorry you had a bad experience but to me it seems you should’ve did your due diligence as a gun owner who seems to know at least a little bit about guns and what they are talking about

And I mean the lifetime warranty as long as you are the gun owner for like 30-40 extra bucks saves you all the heartache if you have any problems so for the price and for how consistent and reliable it is can’t beat that man
But, with each new firearm, they screw the lefties out of the market. Didn't used to be that way.
@@AbyssProphet Didn't think Ruger charged Extra for Warranty's!
An optic cut would be nice. Old hands usually also have bad eyes.
@@AbyssProphet You're probably right. I use the red dots for range fun, but in a self-defense situation, I probably wouldn't use any sites.
Got mine 4 months ago, haven't fired it yet because of shit weather. Also picked up the Ruger SFAR AR-10 battle Rifle 😎
I’ll probably buy this gun to use at the range for fun I almost bought it but instead I went with the Glock 20 GEN 4 10 mm
I added a veridian green laser/light
And I just bought a LCP max, the a holes! 😂 I hope this gun is better than that one!
Manual says you really should not be dropping the mags unless you need to
Dimensions?
Aluminum rails?
Yes the slide rails are made of aluminum
@@PatriotPaulUSA i never said there was anything wrong with aluminum rails, i was just answering the above guys question "aluminum rails?"
Why doesn't anyone mention the Ruger Security 380 has an extended 15 round clip, in addition I haven't seen one review of the Baretta Cheetah 80X cal.380
why do they call it Security-380 Lite Rack?
The "Lite Rack" is due to it being designed in such a way that the slide is very easy to pull back, helps for those with weaker hands/grip.
With the Max available..........why bother ?
this is in class with the S&W EZ....but you didnt have that one to compare it too....failure
👍
Love this fun. Wished I saw this before buying a different one.
For those uneducated on that lever in the trigger, it IS NOT a fun safety. It is a DROP SAFETY. So
All the other drop safety features everyone is adding with the piston in the slide and all, and not needed. So, when you buy any gun that does not have a manual safety, it has NO SAFETY when that gun is in your hand. Nobody is ever going to pull the trigger with their fingernail. Which is the only way to avoid that trigger lever, so again, it is not safe unless you have a manual safety.
Hey so you haven't heard of trigger safety or striker block huh...both of those things prevent a gun that's dropped from firing

Feeding issues
Very good review. Thanks.
biggest POS I've ever bought.
And yes I do own it and no I have not had the same problems so again getting the warranty for that few extra bucks is so worth it sorry you had a bad experience but to me it seems you should’ve did your due diligence as a gun owner who seems to know at least a little bit about guns and what they are talking about
@@AbyssProphet they come with a warranty. I already sent it back. The slide was defective they replaced it. I'm getting rid of it though.
@@AbyssProphet again...ruger has a factory warranty there's no "extra" warranty to purchase so no idea what you're rambling about.
it was defective not "operator error" as I said.
@@dougrose7334 I mean no one else is having this problem so again from the info I’m given I can only make assumptions not ideal but that’s what I have to work with. And I will say I didn’t purchase mine directly from ruger I purchased it from a gun store and they provided a lifetime warranty as long as I own it so maybe look at going to gun stores to purchase guns but to each it’s own sorry you had issues with it but mine is working great and has no problems so 🤷♂️🤷♂️ if it’s not a manufacturer fault then idk what to tell you
