The M9 is a legendary pistol. Their bad rep came from the poor maintenance in the military. The ones we had when I was in the army were abused, I hated them. I walked into my lgs, saw a M9a3, Italy made. Amazing pistol, and is now my go to pistol. I often carry 92x compact as well. They are both a dream to shoot.

After 9.5 yrs as a Civilian Armorer at Ft. McCoy, I had 1000's of these across my bench, going to and coming back from war fighting. The single biggest issue was the old sharp corner locking block cracking at that corner. There was a change out of the barrel and or locking block on those older pistols. We saw a few safety/decock levers broken off and weak recoil and main springs. With proper cleaning and lubrication, these are very reliable pistols. Limp wristing is and issue for function. Great job guys. I really think I "need" one of the newest versions. There are also guys that rework them for National Match guns.

Still one of the finest pistols to be made. Their bad wrap came from from ignorance , abuse, and internet rumor mill. I have four of them. They are phenomenal.
They are one of the smoothest factory actions and are crazy good suppressor hosts as they are not browning tilting barrel operated…
The slide mounted safety iS NOT a big deal. Few carry a DA with a safety on. The DA IS the safety….

actually ... the "bad rap" came from frame cracking on the original military run of them.
beretta had to mod the gun to prevent that.
the "ignorance" was on beretta's misunderstanding of the durability required for SOF use.
the "abuse" (as you call it) was standard military use in the special ops community.
the internet did not exist at that time.
i know ... because i was in SOF at the time.
and switched from the 1911 to the beretta.
the u.s. military switching to the beretta was purely political.
the u.s. wanted to maintain bases in italy, (nato, and the cold war) the italians, wanted
      into the military money trough.

    • @sorryociffer
      @sorryociffer Рік тому +13

@@grayman7208 Guns getting a steady diet of higher than nato spec ammo than the gun passed trials on, is NOT the guns problem. Locking blocks NOT getting replaced at specified maintenance intervals is NOT the guns problem. Lowest bidder checkmate brand mags that were not sand/grit compatible is NOT the guns fault.
Beretta fixed a problem that was CREATED, not one that EXISTED. As to the Italian base issues, there may have been insinuated consequences, but that does not negate that the pistols passed all the trials ahead of its competitors… look at the current fail pistol, the M17…. Sig was chosen because it appears they SEVERELY underbid the contract. There are knowledgeable people saying that it looks like they will be LUCKY to BREAK EVEN…

The slide mounted safety is still an issue when your chain of command aren’t gun people and are understandably risk adverse due to officers and seniors NCO’s doing dumb shit with pistols.
If I could’ve gotten away with leaving the safety off on my M9, I would’ve, but when you’ve got a yell train from the 1st Sgt to the BC telling me leaving the safety off is “unprofessional and sets a poor example to your troops”, means I’m stuck with the inferior option.
The cool guys in Special Forces or hi op-tempo combat arms folks might’ve gotten away with doing whatever the heck they wanted, but the majority of the Army is still POG’s that oftentimes barely know how to safely point a rifle downrange and hit a pop up target at 200 meters, nevermind use critical thinking for carry and use of a pistol.

      nonsense.
      i was there.
beretta's were not built to handle the needs of u.s. military, when the contract was issued.
it's one thing to walk around wearing a gun you shoot once or twice a year,
and another to have a gun that can fire thousands of rounds a month.
      month after month.
      which is what socom does.
beretta's could not handle firing thousands of rounds a month.
as per the needs that the army contracted for.
they were cracking in both the receiver and the slide.
      this IS a design flaw.
      simple fact.

BTW, the safety lever is spring loaded so a downward swipe similar to the 1911 WILL disengage it. By design. The decocker doesn't block the hammer. The rear portion of the 2 piece firing pin is rotated out of the way. And i carry 18 round Mec-Gar flush fitting mags.

The M9 and 92 are the same with two minor differences. The M9 has two dot sights where as the 92 has 3 dot sights. The M9 has a different finish known as Bruniton which is more corrosion resistant and duller. The evolution of both happened at the same time, mainly the F model becoming the FS which uses an enlarged hammer pin which keeps the slide from flying back if you have a slide failure. One of the best pistols ever made and one of my all time favorites.

My 92 FS has the 2 dot sights and the Bruniton finish with all metal parts including the recoil spring guide rod. It also has the flat head screws in the grip panels and the lanyard on bottom of the grip. It’s a USA made pistol. I don’t know what year it was made but I bought it used from a friend in 1992. I tried to check the manufacture date on Beretta’s website but it only goes back to 1988.

The open top slide and various sculpting make it one of the best looking pistols in my opinion. I used, carried, trained and competed with it for 28yrs as a US Army Infantryman. The keys to success with it are to use good magazines that are kept clean, and replace the recoil spring periodically. The locking block issue is primarily a result of hotter mil ammo and nobody ever changing the recoil springs. If you have an old one with unknown round count I would update to the current 3rd gen locking block and spring kit which is $40. Another tip is to get some professional training. (No, you won't find that in the Army). Through external training and repetition, I built in a system where I disengaged the safety while establising my grip during the draw from the holster and also swept my thumb forward while pushing out to engage the target. This second part addresses possibly putting the pistol on safe while clearing a malfunction. My favorite memory is a competition the Italian Army put together during one of my deployments and beating their best shooters with their own pistol. The M17/M18 are nice, but my go to remains the M9.

Absolutely love my M9A1. I have smaller hands so i tolerate the safety but a decocker-only (which is how all DA/SA guns should be) makes it perfect.
-the cracked slides came from a very high round count of overpressured 9mm NATO ammo (winchester loaded NATO cases with a Luger powder charge).
-The M9 and P226 were roughly neck and neck during phase 2 trials, idk why so many people choose to be arrogant of this.
-the locking block issues were fixed _from Beretta_ but the Army wouldnt approve of them since it would have been a TDP change.
-ive been told grunts used them as hammers for tent stakes. No matter what gun is chosen, the lowest common demoninator is going to _abuse_ it. The M60 is another example of a good gun that wasnt maintained so it has a bad rap with certain people.
Theyre great guns, theyre fully modern just like every other offering next to it at your LGS, id recommend picking one up if it fits your hand (and fitting ones hand is truly the biggest difference between different models)

I also have no problem with reaching the safety. My EDC is a 92FS with an 18 +1 round MecGar base pad and magazine that gives me 19 rounds with a flush fit magazine. Having small to medium size hands, adding Wilson Combat Ultra thin grips and an extended mag release button made it a whole different gun to handle and control. The D hammer spring and G decocker spring took it to a whole new level! Plus thanks to the weight, if it runs out of ammo you can use it as a club or crappy boomerang! It did come with factory 17rd mags and the Beretta 30rds are very cool because they extend the grip into the magazine!

The M9 is a very reliable pistol. It won the DoD consecutive firing competition in the mid 1980s by a huge margin. I carried one in Afghanistan and it never presented an issue. It was also the tightest M9 I shot. The mid 70s design is clunky by todays better fitting pistols and that loosely translates into better accuracy. No matter how well a firearm fits, without enough training it won’t matter much what our troops use.

I went through 3 M9s while attending the SRT course in the Army. Locking blocks denigrating became a real problem with high round count M9s in the Army. Most complaints were simply that the grip frame is just too large for a lot of shooters, especially for a 15 round capacity. The other training issue with the M9 is shooters inadvertently engaging the safety when racking the slide. This was changed with the 92G decocker only models.

Definitely. Tragically, many units in the Army didn’t have a good maintenance culture around their handguns and didn’t replace/service parts and components at the times that they should have. Many M9 components were pushed way past what they should have been in terms of usage and/or time.

News flash to the uninitiated. The Army NEVER has had enough school trained armorers . When an MOS is undermanned, priority of fill or manning goes to those units closest to the tip of the spear vs those least likely to see combat. Many units will take a soldier and designate them the armorer. Also, a unit Commander, company and above, can force their weapons through the system to get a depot rebuild if they are persistent. I did that with my .50 cal machine guns and M9 handguns, and my worst rifles. How? History of the weapons. Everything has records and yes, at some point everything warrants a depot level inspection. Depot MUST repair, rebuild, or remove from inventory, that which cannot be rebuilt. I got an ARCOM for doing that for my battery, and later my battalion as the maintenance officer. Yes, it was a pain and a 2yr process. Yes, most officers do not know how logistics works. Logistics often must be FORCED to support. It really is sad.

@Hattiesburg9333 I served for 28yrs and saw how the "transformational force" absorbed MOS losses in order to retain combat brigades. Been counters cutting the size in total people. That explained a lot of critical MOS shortages. However, it was not al ways that way. When the Army was bigger, everyone had armorers and it functioned better. Civilians are great for certain things, but if they do a task and I deploy, it now becomes a liability. Desert Storm and Bosnia exposed that with many MOS cuts. Politicians are always screwing up what works.

Probably mentioned elsewhere… but the M9 is a phenomenal handgun, and gets a bad reputation from some former members of the US military… a US military which, in general, doesn’t maintain its handguns well (outside of a few select elite or handgun specific units with actual competent members and armorers) and is full of service members that really aren’t as educated/competent with firearms as they believe (and aren’t aware of that themselves). I’m not trying to come across as mean or aggressive, but I can’t tell you how many M9’s I saw that were ruined and abused by armorers that were just an “armorer” as an extra detail/duty, and not because they were actually truly skilled armorers. I say this as someone that developed a competency for firearms and hunting outside of the military and eventually became a US Army officer. Now, have there been positive changes over time to make the M9 series better? Of course. Every firearm goes through that. But even then… the M9 series is a great handgun at its core. It would not surprise me if in 10 years some former military members have the same cynical opinion for the M17/M18; not because the M17/M18 is a bad pistol, but because they were handed a specific gun “just for qualification” that had not been properly maintained over the years by the services themselves.

If memory serves, I believe it was Clint Smith who said that no gun is small & light enough to carry but big & heavy enough to shoot. Forgive me if the quote isn’t exact but the gist of it is the qualities of a pistol are diametrically opposed. I personally grew to love the M9, having carried one for 20 years as a military policeman. Is it perfect? Absolutely not, nothing is, but it’s a great pistol, very accurate and very reliable as well.
One thing missing in the discussion was the variants of the 92. There are too many to list so just to condense, the main variants were the 92F (decock only), 92FS (or M9 which is the safety/decocker), the 92D (double action only) and the Vertec (which slimmed the grip down significantly by eliminating the hump on the blackstrap). The 93 is select fire and fires in either semi or 3 round bursts so it technically isn’t a machine pistol, depending on how strictly you adhere to the definition. It is a brilliant design nonetheless. Great video overall, I enjoyed seeing you guys show some love to a great gun!

The upper end $550 maybe 6, gets you a threaded barrel, dovetail front sight instead of fixed and a little more flash & flare... grips etc. Base come w 1 18rnd mag ithers up to 3 I've seen depending... I have owned a 1976 Beretta 92, a 1978 92S and a pair of consecutively serial numbered 92SBWs in 1984, it is probably the most dependable pistol I have owned. The SB series differs from the M-9 in that it kept the rounded trigger guard.

I carry one daily. 92FS Brigadier variant. No complaints. It still runs 110%. Just maintain it and use good, not GI, magazines, and rock n roll. Get some slim VZ grips. Big difference.

As aircrew, I could choose between an M9 and a 226. Both were great guns, and I carried the 226… but nothing shoots like an m9 on qual day lol. Other than a cz75, I can’t think of a better shooting pistol.

The baretta 92fs is my all time favorite pistol, but my edc is a glock19. I shoot the 92 better but for edc i found the glock is a better fit for my usual everyday attire, but i won't shy away from the 92 in the winter time when i'm wearing heavier clothing. Great pistol and most of the kinks have been worked out over the years.

G decocker and why, Ernest using Berettas in competition, steel frame X version, work great suppressed, and great for recoil sensitive shooters. Lastly I think revolvers were the reliable gun in a day when most semis were not. Totally different in 2023. Keep up the great work, thank you.

Revolvers: they will always have a place for _big_ cartridges, because no one can fit a 45-70 into an autoloading pistol, but personally i would gravitate towards a 10mm or 9x25mm pistol before i got a revolver for serious things. Even something like a small J-frame doesnt seem as viable with things like the G42/43, Shield, P365 and the like.

Great video! 🖤Wilson Combat also offers a 92 package. I have a 92X compact (G version) that I haven't shot yet. As cool as they are, it is hard to pick these over the more economic Glock 19 for a defensive pistol, especially since Beretta doesn't offer a true subcompact to go with the 92 series like Glock does with the Glock 26/42/42x. More holsters and accessories for the Glock as well. But I think the DA/SA platform has some real advantages as a defensive pistol.

Glock 17 is 25oz. In comparison the 92fs or LTT is 33oz. The CZ Shadow 2 which is the golden standard of race guns is 46.5oz, some race gun 2011s are 50oz. The Beretta is metal BUT its aluminum framed, not steel framed. It's light enough to be carried AIWB or as a duty pistol, speaking from experience. However when you put a 4oz light on it, a 3oz red dot, and an extended mag, that quickly turns into a 40oz + pistol and then it's not that fun to have on the hip all day. But even then it's possible, I know plenty of guys who do carry it that way everyday. I take off the light for AIWB, throw on the X300 for duty or the nightstand.

I think the majority of people who gave or give the Beretta 92/M9 a bit of flack are those who were only familiar with old, worn and tired service pistols from being in the military and law enforcement.Working with just BEATEN examples with the crappiest of aftermarket replacement parts.
The people who praise them the most are those who later were reintroduced to unmolested examples and shot one in their true glory. I went from hating them to owning 3 going on 4 of them in different variants.

Great episode. I have one comment if I may, RELIABILITY. it is a trigger for me when I hear automatics are just as reliable as revolvers. This is patently false. I love all guns. But I won't make false statements. Anything with a slide or a magazine will be less reliable than a revolver. I won't even get into how finicky some autos are with ammunition, some are very finicky. A revolver will fire any mfgr. you feed it. A revolver will fire stuffed in your jacket pocket, and through your pocket or through her purse, or pressed up against his belly in a scuffle. The same can not be said of an auto. The first time you get a round " stove pipe " on you and you have to apply immediate action, I will remind you that you are probably dead if the perp has a revolver, because he's not gonna have any feed issues.
You guys did a great job on this episode, maybe grab that .357 and do a revolver segment? I'd like to see some .327 coverage as well.

If you are going to carry some bigger pistols, such as me with hands that just plain are too big to hold anything even slightly compact you make concessions. Sometimes that is simple as the shirts you wear or location you can carry, but I’ve found it’s pretty easy to grab a duty/service holster and just carry at 3 o’clock never had an issue concealing that either.

  • @WilliamKister

It is a good pistol. I am 6'2" so never had a problem shooting it and thought of them as an accurate pistol. I do believe that striker firearms at a lighter weight make much more practical carry though. If I want a super accurate semi-auto pistol, I would choose a 1911 that has been done up.

I seem to be the lone dissenter here. Over the course of a 22 year armed career with two agencies, I've been issued the Beretta twice. Once as the M9,once as the 92fs. Beretta is a big no for me. The Army pistols were beat and, I was prepared to give it a second chance doing jail transports. The first officers to qualify were unable to qualify. The guns were 100% failure. All the springs had to be replaced along with the floor plate of every magazine. We used them lightly for 7 years and they became nearly unserviceable regarding point of aim point of impact changes. I was never a fan of the double/single action trigger or the safety decocker. The safety should be a safety (on the frame) and the trigger single action only.
Edit: Regarding the random comment about the appendix, many doctors suspect it's a refuge for beneficial gut flora to hid in during diarrhea.

Revolver vs semi auto reliability depends on a few things, obviously the particular specimen and the other is what the use case is. Do you plan to push it into a bears belly and squeeze off a round? Revolver is better as it won’t get pushed out of battery. Do you plan to put rounds into the bear before it gets to you? Semi auto is better as you have more rounds on tap to do it. It’s just a matter of what scenario you think is most likely and pick accordingly, you can get both in models that are very reliable so it really depends on such obscure scenarios to separate them.
