      i rock a stainless steel iwatch in place of what use to be a rolex or omega. I use the iwatch for helping me stay active. I rather be fit wearing an iwatch than overweight wearing a luxury timepiece. Don't get me wrong, her style advice is on point, good for dates and special nights. we're moving towards a more dressed down society.

    • @jakublistwon
      @jakublistwon 6 років тому

      Brian Hsin You should be able to stay fit without any watch. And apple watches are pure shit (just as any other smart watch) because they are the next pointless device that you have to keep charging. Any quartz watch you just need to change battery once like every 2-10 years (depends) and automatic you can just wear and it will keep working FOREVER, however, you should do time corrections every week to 3 weeks or so ;)

    Ashley you should stop letting your personal taste dominate what you recommend to viewers in your videos. Yes you have your own preferences, but that doesn't mean you say that something looks "shitty" if it is not something that YOU cannot appreciate. There are some rules to follow, but stylish men know what they are doing! Watches aren't the only thing i am referring to; i watch your videos from time to time and there are a lot of things you say and outfits you put together that i don't find very appealing. But i don't go around commenting or saying that they are shitty/ugly etc. You are reaching out to a lot of people, i hope you think before you say something like this. You can leave options for others to decide instead of downright expecting people to follow the exact same opinions as you.

    Love your other videos. But your opinion on men's watch is too subjective. A man's watch can be very personal. It can be a reflection of family tie or his military past or his professional career. As a stylist, you only see watch as an expensive accessory, in which case what you said was not wrong. But I assure you a man who can tell you a good story about his watch is a man you will like much more than a man who matches his watch strap colour with his belt.

    • @topoisomerace
      @topoisomerace 6 років тому +8

      Well said. The "rules" in this video sound much more like opinions. The idea that someone is going to sit there and swap out their black leather band for a brown one because of their footwear that day is ridiculous. No one needs to match their watch to their shoes, especially since it should probably be hidden under a suit jacket or shirt sleeve most of the time anyway.

    • @lol-pf9cq
      @lol-pf9cq 5 років тому

      Agreed I think it is more like a personal preference than just another accessory but of course there are some rules that you need to follow to not look like an idiot

      Good point. I picked the Rolex Explorer II over the Submariner because I was an Army guy and preferred the ground watch over the sea watch (Navy or Marines). The 24 hour hand is perfect for any military guy as we never re-assimiliate to using AM and PM.

    I have to admit i was very pleasantly surprised by this video. I was expecting this (being that yours is more of a fashion/style channel) to be a lot of "check out this Michael Kors or for a budget option, Daniel Wellington" type of video. It is clear from your recommendations that you know watches and have good taste. Obviously taste is subjective, however the fact that you have things like A Lange, Jaeger, Nomos, IWC, etc, in your list speaks volumes. While these clearly aren't unknown brands per se, they are brands that offer an excellent value for the money. You can easily spend the same amount of money on watches with less pedigree and horological clout.

      The Datejust was always a sports watch. Cool that trends and public opinion change, but that does not take away the fact that the Datejust is a sports watch. I completely disagree with the ridiculous conservative rigid statements this woman made about wearing watches with suits in her video. I too think a Datejust with metal band goes perfect with a suit. And I too can see a Datejust as a dress watch. But the fact is Rolex issued it as a sports watch.

    I own:
    Seiko SNK086 on a nato strap. Mainly used in summer but is very durable. Highly recommend it as it’s only $85. Got it in college and haven’t looked back.
    Omega Seamaster on a stainless steel bracelet with a black dial. I first saw it in James Bond and have been in love with it ever since. Treated myself when I graduated from law school.
    100th anniversary Cartier Tank. One of the most iconic silhouettes of all time. My wife bought me it on my wedding day.
    Rolex Datejust with a white dial, crowned bezel and jubilee bracelet. Got it the day my son was born.
    IWC Portofino which I was gifted on my 30th birthday by my mother.
    Rolex GMT Master II Pepsi with a jubilee bracelet. I really fell in love with the history so i decided to buy it when my second son was born.
    As you can see I try to only buy watches on special occasions as it limits my spending because I have been known to splash the cash at times. This is the perfect amount of money spent on watches as I can still afford a nice car and house but still enjoy this expensive hobby that is horology.
    By the way this was a great video but I do disagree on the fact that you have to wear a leather banded watch when wearing a suit.

Sorry to see the accessories portion end, but you did a fantastic job. Looking forward to more fashion videos. And right on about the leather strap with a suit...when you're flying helicopters and jumping through explosions and saving the country, then you can wear a metal band...in a business, wear leather. For those of you asking about Daniel Wellington, those are made in China, and none of these watches suggested here are made in China. Quality matters.

Some dress watches come with bracelet as well and you haven't talk about that. No doubt James Bond made the sport watch with the suit style iconic, but the Character of James Bond isn't the only one wearing a bracelet watch with a suit.
      like the other person commented, James Gandolfini playing the character of Tony Soprano wore a Rolex President with a suit.
      Christian Bale, playing the part of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho wore a gold and silver bracelet Rolex day date with a suit.
      and there are many more to name.
      So your point of Omega paying millions for placement in the James Bond franchise is pointless and irrelevant.
      As I mentioned, there are many others besides Bond who have made the "sports watch with a suit look" a trend, in and out of Hollywood.

  • @OneTalaw

    Ashley, Thank you!! You are absolutely spot-on with your watch selections. I have been saying for years that metal bracelets on watches should NEVER be worn with a suit i.e. formal occasions, leather is the only option, however you have those die hard gold Rolex enthusiast types that will forever disagree with you, because they feel the need to show off (compensate) for something they are lacking. Keep these videos and advice coming, I'm glad to see someone who agrees with me. 😊

    Good video. I generally agree with the recommendations, but I do have a few comments -
    1. Today, you can get away with wearing a watch on a bracelet with a suit, and some divers and chronos would be fine, such as a sub. I wouldn't wear one to a formal occasion or with a tux, but most suit-worthy events would be fine.
    2. The Portuguese automatic is a fantastic watch, but it's big. You can get a similar watch in the Portuguese chrono, which is a bit smaller and is cheaper.
    3. The Nomos Tangente is a great watch, but (1) they are super thin, which many may not be used to, and (2) the lugs are crazy long, which makes it wear bigger than you'd expect. If you're a 38mm guy, you'd probably want to get a 35mm Tangente.

    I think the main concern about wearing thick and tall sports watches with suits is the cuff of your sleeve getting snagged on the watch when you check the time. Any watch you wear with a suit should allow your cuff to slide over your watch when you lower your arm back to your side.
    If your sport watch (ie: my Orient Mako USA) can slide under the cuff of your shirt without getting snagged by it then I think it is acceptable to wear with a suit.
    Also I kinda disagree with your Dial choices, my opinion is Black should be preferred vs Blue and White, because black goes with more things than blue.
    Finally there is only one Omega Speedmaster Chronograph that has gone to the moon, and the model you showcased is not that watch. You want the watch that went to the moon and the only watch certified for EVA Space Walks by NASA? You want the Omega Speedmaster Professional Ref. 311.30.42.30.01.005.

    I have 8 watches... and none have brown straps because I never wear brown shoes. The perfect watch for a suit is an Audermars Royal Oak...the classic thin automatic watch on a bracelet. A dress watch really doesn't have to be leather strapped, though a Reverso or traditional style dress watch is obviously great with a suit.

    I think watches comes down to the guy or girl wearing it. I think the diameter is more important than the style. I think divers can be used with suits but it has to be 37mm or smaller. I think a Rolex Sub can be worn with a suit as well since its pretty thin for a diver, but it really depends on how formal the outfit is, I would recommend a vintage Sub with a suit. I love the JLC Reverso and think its perfect for suits. Nomos are one of the most underrated watches out there.

When I seen you had the IWC I knew you meant business, I use an Omega Seamaster silver dial as my everyday watch and have a Rolex and Boluva as backups. I will say though, I don't think any man should ever wear gold watches. Gentleman wear steal/silver con-men and car sales men wear gold.

      That's because he use it as a tool watch, he's not really wearing the watch to look nice it functions more as a tool, for example if he is needs to escape from a place before it blows up then a chronograph or a diving watch comes in handy.
      But I doubt the average Joe ever needs a chronograph or rotating bezel when they're mingling at a cocktail party.
      I personally think wearing a sportswatch with a nice suit makes you look like a car-sales man or a Wallstreet stock-broker.

I' don't wear suits often, but I'll need one when I do. Really thinking of a Nomos, since everyone loves them so much. Prefer a Grand Seiko, but I'd need to sell some stuff. • @Redbirdsfan1970

    Great video, Ashely. I, personally, do not agree with your viewpoint that a sports watch always looks in poor form with a suit. Yes, it is a traditional belief that a suit should require a gentleman to wear a dress watch. However, that "rule" of fashion was developed well over 50 years ago. Back then dress watches were the norm and sports/tool watches were not. Tool watches of the 40s, 50s, and 60s were used solely for a purpose. They were not very refined. They were just coming into being in the marketplace. Sports/tool watches have become much more refined. So, I think it can be acceptable for a modern sports/tool watch to look appropriate with a suit depending on the watch itself. It is worth nothing, we see it done by other professional stylists from many other mediums and they are experts getting paid just like Ashely. They, obviously, differ from her opinion. I think this is something else many of us are forgetting....she is giving us her opinion. It's not the be all and end all. She is neither right nor wrong. As such, taste and style are personal choices. If she hates how my refined sports watch looks with a suit, I really do not care. Lastly, wearing a suit is far less common nowadays. I'd venture to say it is a rarity in the vast majority of industries. So, the advice to wear what you would wear most would really suggest you get that sports watch you love and then make due for the suit and tie if your sports watch doesn't look good with a suit. That's my humble opinion on the topic. Do with it whatever you'd like.

  • @opulentstoic168

    Just want to give some suggestions and clarification.
    I think you should do more research before making this video. The watch that has been on the moon, and still being used by nasa, is the omega speedmaster professional, the manual-wound with Lemania movement, not the automatic with Co-axial movement like you stated in your video. And although I'm also a fan of the moonwatch, I'm also acknowledging that there are a lot of great chronographs out there, like zenith El primero, the first automatic chronograph, hence its name the El primero, with higher frequency than most chronographs.
    I understand you tried to act like some watch expert that know some nice trivia, but it's better to do more research thoroughly next time, or you can consult some WIS beforehand, it would make the content much better.

    • @opulentstoic168
      @opulentstoic168 7 років тому +3

      Ashley Weston I did not say that you call yourself an expert, I said you act like one by giving the advice and the way you did this video by talking a lot about what are allowed and what are not allowed.
      I appreciate that you give some tutorial for people who don't know anything about watch, I just gave some advices so you can give better information next time, so your viewers will get better information.
      Example: the watch diameter is important when choosing watch, but actually, lug to lug distance is more important in this matter because even if your wrist size can accommodate the diameter, if the lugs are hanging outside your wrist, it will looks funny. Some watches have large diameter with short lugs or curve lugs, and some others have small diameter with longer lugs. Another one is the IWC, in my opinion it's too thick and it might not fit under the cuff. BUT, all of these "rules" are based on tradition, so due to change in society, the "rules" are not absolute and as long as it's acceptable it's okay.
      One last thing, if you are not expert in this field, I think it's better to stay away from the topic, or as previously mentioned, you should get informations or invite someone with enough knowledge about it. And even with watch enthusiast or expert, they usually have some bias, that's why they usually say it beforehand and stating that this will be my opinion on this, etc etc.
      Good luck on your next video.

      Yes. Or if you had a smaller budget you can get a very nice metal band for the Tissot Visodate she recommends. Back when I was a kid in the 1960s and 70s most watches were dress watches and they.were worn with suits and casually. And plenty of men had them on those expanding metal bands made by Speidel and others. No one said you couldn't wear them with a suit.

  • @brayan8346
    @brayan8346 7 років тому

    It's more about how you wear it. A steel watch generally contrasts better with a suit. A formal watch with a leather strap can come together with the right outfit, but it can give an 'older' look depending on the attire. The best thing to do it's to have on of each and try it on with that days dress.

So if quality and looks is what you aim for, shop for a high quality watch micro brand and you may just be pleasantly surprised.

    Rules are made to be broken, the last thing somebody wearing a watch that is an embodiment of their personality is an amateur that is just so wrong. Yes traditionally wearing something like a reverso or a caletrava would be far better orientated towards a suit or a dinner suit but time change and style does too, wear whatever you want to and don't let somebody like this tell you it's wrong. Most of the men's fashion channels push(sponsored) watches marked by companies that are "shaking up the watch industry." These are well marketed over priced low end Chinese watches with a brand slapped on them. I want to thank our presenter for not promoting $40 watches that are sold for $200.
    I may not agree with everything in this video, like the the assertions that only acceptable dress watches have white faces and IWC is a great value, Miss Weston is mostly correct. Wearing a sport watch with a suit is a faux pas.
    If I'm in a suit, a dress watch that goes with my leather and other metal is the way to go. If I'm wearing a blazer and dress slacks to casual(not sports) wear either a good looking sport watch or dress watch is fine. If I'm in sports wear a sport watch is the only way to go. If I'm going to get dirty, I'm wearing my beater.
    BTW: The Max Bill series are true Bauhaus watches. Max Bill studied at Bauhaus.

    I definitely prefer a nice blue dial over white. And it matches often just as much as white since you'll often have a light blue shirt, Navy tie, blue pocket square, etc.

  • @FLAMINGBABYHEAD

    This is pretty outdated information. Yes, the rules USED to be that you only wore a leather-banded, white faced, minimalist-dial watch with a suit. Just like the rules USED to say that a black-tie tuxedo was casual wear. Times change. Fashion changes. If not, men would still be wearing powdered wigs and ruffled shirts.

      Nobody Important Ruffled shirts are brilliant, proven by Jon Pertwee. That said, I doubt I'd ever wear one myself.

  • @tmdoxie

    Ashley, as an African American, I feel like silver just doesn't really compliment me at all. But even more so, I find myself gravitating to gold hardware on my bags, belts, etc. Also, I find myself grabbing my Apple Watch over everything else at this point. I feel like the features kind if usurp the style rules for me. I've been buying various bands for it in order to make it more appropriate for different occasions.

    Says every man should have a 38-44mm dress watch. Uhm, what? Those sizes are much too large

    • @larryd4352
      @larryd4352 7 років тому +1

      Just depends. I am 6'6" and an ex-football player...offensive lineman....and a 44 mm watch looks like I am wearing a girls watch on my 9 inch wrist! I prefer the Breitling 48 mm Navitimer GMT as my dress watch. My sports watches are my G Shocks and Diesel SBA's. You can always save up and buy a nice watch on the internet...places like Jomashop and Massdrop always have great deals on watches!

      Insecure, no but she is wrong. There are a few sport watches or dress watches that can go either way. You just need to know which watches can pull double duty and how to wear them.

    I’m a big fan of your videos and I’m been a subscriber for many years. Thanks for making this watch video 5 years ago & I keep going back to it from time to time when I’m considering a new watch. It also a video, like many of your others, that it’s in my library of essential from time to time that I keep going make to and learning more each time I watch it.
    Since it was done 5 years ago, can you please make another watch video to see if trends have changed or anything you would now do differently.
    Love your videos and keep them coming.
    Thanks!!!

    Hi Ashley! Love the video! This is the first of your videos I have seen and even at my age (61) I learned a few things. I do have some suggestions. It seems that the dress watches you recommend are very high end watches costing from $4000 to upwards of $20,000 and beyond. Not everyone can afford this luxury. But, there is an alternative. The used market in Omega watches is huge and one could easily find a suitable watch at a fraction of the cost (from as low as $800 to $4,000 and up.) Plus, an Omega is a very high quality timepiece that should properly last for multiple generations. At worst, a man could buy a previously owned Omega from the 1970s to 2000s and have it serviced (cleaned, polished, crystal buffed, band replaced) to possess a true work of art that will complement any casual or dress attire. The same applies to sport watches. BTW, I agree with you, Omega is tops. Timeless beauty and function. And I also agree that a new Tissot is a suitable alternate as well. I have two Tissots, a sport watch (navy blue dial) and a dress watch/automatic chronometer. I also have a 1940s vintage Orfina dress watch that my dad wore for decades. I had it serviced and a new leather band installed. It looks classic and runs well. Anyway, I really love your advice and will make adjustments to my attire accordingly. Keep making videos!

      Honestly I think her dress watch choices were on point, and while I think black dials are most versatile on watches, she does make a good point with white dials on dress watches. I may not hang around with lots of celebrities and I rarely wear a suit but if I spend $8,500 on a Rolex Submariner you're damn right I'm going to wear it with a nice suit. In the end I'm not a fashion savy person, just a average working class male that enjoys watches that's all.

      Yeah, I get what she's trying to say when it comes to matching, but watch is a totally different game. IWC is just alright when it comes to dress watch. Dive watches are good for casual and desk divers, but g-shocks is just as good for sport wear.

      This is about being fashionable and making your watch match as an accessory. Sure, you can wear a tuxedo print t-shirt to a wedding because that's what you love, but it may not be fashionable!

      the watch world is divided in two main categories which are "Dress" and "Sports", with the latter comprising all watches not intended for formal occasions. These definitions predate the qwartz revolution and, at the time, these expensive all-metal automatic watches were, in fact, used for all types of sporting activities.
