    This is a great list but I strongly believe the Patek Philippe Calatrava is a great old money watch and definitely deserves to be on this list for the fact that it's understated and flies below the radar...a trademark characteristic of old money wealth.😁

    • @phillipsheppard5361
      @phillipsheppard5361 9 місяців тому +7

      I don’t know that anyone would disagree that the Patek Philippe Calatrava is a great watch, the only question is do you want to spend $33,000 dollars on a watch? And if you did would you actually wear it? I inherited a Rolex Daytona which is worth no where near what a Calatrava is, and I won’t wear it.

    • @barryrodrigues6876
      @barryrodrigues6876 9 місяців тому +3

      I agree with you about the wearability of a Patek Philippe Calatrava, it is definitely not as versatile as a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. However, I don't think this video was about expensive watches, or else Antonio wouldn't have featured AP in here. It's more about what signals old money.

    • @ahoneyman
      @ahoneyman 9 місяців тому +2

      Eh, other companies make dress watches like the Calatrava. It's not iconic really. In the Patek realm go Lange and Sohne or maybe Glashutte. Or slum it and go Longines.

    • @icebergwtq
      @icebergwtq 9 місяців тому

      It's iconic. @@ahoneyman

    • @barryrodrigues6876
      @barryrodrigues6876 9 місяців тому +3

      @ahoneyman the Longines dress watch range is quite good, I'll admit. Very simple yet sophisticated. But again, the video wasn't about popular watches, albeit the JLC Reverso and others here are quite popular. The idea of old money is the opposite of today's Instagram or Influencer driven, show-off - "Look at what I'm wearing" culture. So, while brands like Lange and Sohne have become popular and have absolutely great watches, they don't signify old money (in my opinion). In the end, I guess it's about what you're comfortable wearing when you are wealthy. And if that's a Casio G Shock, power to you!

  • @TheRobSJ
    @TheRobSJ 9 місяців тому +23

    AP is probably more new money than old money. Just so much hype over them right now brings in all the ballers. At least the Royal Oak.
    I would trade AP out for Vacheron Constantin on this list. You see someone wearing an Overseas, you know they know watches, and you know they’ve got deep pockets.

  • @Mike-108_v_

    As a daily wear beater, the G-shock "solar" (no battery changing) is good... 4 years... no issues. I hardly ever take it off, except when showering. In bed, it's easy to hit the light button to see the time... without having to maneuver toward the bedstand.

    This is a fabulous video Antonio. I wear a G-Shock original exactly as you mentioned and it's still my favourite. I've also got a JLC and an OP after having far heavier hitters over the years but came back to these masterpieces. I've a couple of vintage birth year pieces left to find and a newer 'fun' Rolex to add but after years of excess, finally whittling it down I'm pretty content.

    The essential Old Money watches are(you covered a few):
    1. Cartier Santos de Cartier steel or Tank Louis gold
    2. Rolex DateJust steel
    3. Rolex Sub, blackface steel
    4. JLC Reverso gold
    5. Patek Calatrava gold
    6. Breguet Type XX Transatlantique steel
    7. BlancPain Fifty Fathom steel
    8. VC Historique American Platinum or Patrimony gold
    9. Philippe Dufour Grande Sonnerie gold
    The Patek is the most “old money” of all the watches and you could have gone with a perpetual calendar or a Nautilus also.

      @soberguycarmansimpson5836 9 місяців тому

      Hey Butters, cool name. I love the Speedmaster also, but it is a sports watch and entirely too big to wear with a formal suit because it can catch on the cuff and not let your jacket sleeve hang all the way down. These days people would just notice your cool watch and maybe compliment you on it. But, old money would look down their nose at you for wearing the wrong kind of watch for the occasion. They wouldn’t say anything of course. But if it was a dress occasion they might assume that you only owned one watch. Not good if you were hoping to make business contacts. Sorry.

    Old money? Well, GHW Bush wore a Timex Indiglow on a nylon strap. My best pal from boarding school wears a Rolex President as an everyday watch, but loves his Calatrava, wears it very often, and likens the difference between them as about the same as that between a Volkswagen Golf and an Aston Martin DB4GT (which he also owns and often drives). I sometimes wear a Hamilton Altair given to me by my dad, also a VC triple calendar from the same source.

    i have over 75 watches and my Santos (black grey dial and bezel) is my favorite in my collection. My most worn is a Cartier De Calibre two tone 😊. Good video. I have never owned. a G Shock and am a retired Marine/Soldier. nice thorough video.
    AP is a one trick pony, and not intetested.
    Monta is a great company, my brother owns a couple.
    I sm not a Rolex, horrible customer service and service fees…. poor budiness ethics…. it will eventually come back on them

    Time for everyone's favorite children's game: Which one of these things is not like the other? If you said "Monta" you're correct.
    The other watches, while not really old money watches either (maybe Cartier and JLC), do have some history and some horological chops. All the watches in the video are spoken of by serious watch folks, except Monta. If you like it, and it fits your budget, you should purchase it. Just don't let someone fool you with videos like this. Monta is not a respected brand in watch circles in the way the others are, even G-Shock. RMRS, I'm all for people making money promoting things, but it should be done honestly, not misleading less knowledgeable people.

    Hey Antonio you were wrong about Steve McQueen he was right handed. Examples I saw pictures of him writing. He wrote with his right hand. In The Great Escape baseball glove was on his left hand and he tossed the ball with his right hand. In Bullet his shoulder holster was worn with gun under his left shoulder. Just thought that you would like to know. Needless to say I'm a huge Steve McQueen fan. Great channel my friend

    Great video Antonio. There are also some great new stylish watchmakers out there, my faves being Panzera, DeTomaso, and Torgoen.

      I’m sorry Eric, but none of those watches are likely to be working 2 years from now. So sorry, but real quality watches cost way more than that. You might try making payments on a Hamilton mechanical,$700 - $1000, or a Citizen or Seiko light rechargeable quartz, $350-$1000, 😂or the worlds best deal on a watch; the Longines Ultra High Precision, 7 year battery, perpetual calendar, sports watch.

    For the young gentlemen just starting out in the business or dressy technology world, I would suggest a less expensive watch, the Tag Huer Aquaracer. They are relatively much less expensive than the watches mentioned in this video. These are dressy and sporty at the same time. The quartz version is much more of a value proposition.

    I have nothing against Casio, but I think that calling it old money is a bit of a stretch. It's iconic, maybe stylish, but old money? Nah. Good info on the other watches though.

    For Cartier I would recommend the Tank as old money. Elsewhere an old quartz Or & Acier Santos. Have both.
    G-Shock are no-brainers, almost all serious collectionner have some.
    For Rolex, old money would be the classical and underrated Calatrava. Same quality, but discreet and elegant!
    Reverso is perfect. Actual Seamaster isn't old money, get De Ville instead.

    I didn't analyze the watch collection stills, but you can definitely sell at least one of those and replace with the Cartier. You should probably sell most of them unless they all have sentimental value anyway.
