I think a lot of people don’t take into consideration the quality of their water. Hard water is a huge culprit of brassy hair, and also causes frizziness and even damage over time. Shower filters are a good thing to add to a haircare regimen.
Also, the Malibu C line and treatments work amazing, especially the ones for hard water and blondes. Not only does it really brighten the blonde, but it leaves the hair softer. It’s one of my favorite hair treatments since there’s major hard water where I live.

This is such a good point! I have clients come in with horrible water and their hair is totally orange. It's impossible for them to keep it from getting brassy

    • @BlackThorndRose

@@hairbykristijennings6648 Malibu C is my savior, they have in salon treatments, and take home treatments for the client. They also have a pretty good, gently clarifying shampoo.
You just have to make sure to use the treatment before toning! Because if there is chemical or mineral build up on the hair, it will strip it away and if the toner is sitting on top of that, it will strip it away too. But I’ve seen some major transformations just using their treatments, almost like it’s toning the hair from that orange to beautiful bright blonde.
That line is definitely underrated! I don’t see many stylists use it, but I feel like it’s a must have for blondes.

OMG I was JUST listening to that instagram video of LisaLovesBalayage, and I went to my sister and was like " WHERE DOES THE COLOR GO WHEN IT'S BLEACHED?" (she's a stylist) and she was like "huh....it melts away?" and I was like "HA! I just learned some science!" My mind was totally blown from that information!!! So cool to hear you talking about that too!!

I love your thorough explanations! 🤯 Ive never really thought about all the factors that have to do with your toner fading! Adding soo much heat to the hair makes total sense! In general i work with level 2-3 hair and do have a hard time achieving ashy tones. Thank you for all the information!!!

Thank you so much for watching! There's so many factors for toner fading..... better to educate clients so they can't come back complaining!

Ok this makes some sense now why my stylist produces such beautiful blonde but never styles my hair. Then another curls it, but doesn’t care about what heat she uses.🤣Then I go back to number one complaining about brassiness. I think my beachwaver is a safe bet?

Kristy another reason why hair gets brassy after a few shampoos its because water has several mineral and one of them happens to be Cooper.

I wish I had watched this video three years ago, when I had highlights in my hair. My base color is medium brown. The hair colorist put in honey blonde highlights. My highlights did turn orange after a while, when I was due to have them touched up. My hair colorist did a great job!! I loved the highlights!! They made me look younger, according to my husband and my kids. The only thing about the highlights that I didn't like was that they got very dry over time. I had to condition and moisturize my hair at least two or three times a week, when I had the highlights. Eventually, I covered them with medium brown hair color. My hair looks much healthier now and very shiny without the highlights. So, I would think very hard before you decide to get highlights put into your hair. If you have the time and the money to condition them, it's not a problem. However, my husband has been retired for a year and a half now. We just don't have the money right now for me to get professional highlights put in my hair. Just saying.

Hilights definitely can get dry but when I do them and then go to retouch, I never ever overlap the bleach all the way down. I mix 2 bowls, 1 for the root which is dark and needs to be lightened and I either leave the ends completely out of the foil or I use a different much less volume of developer to "refresh " the bottom. But usually the bottom is already blonde. I see this happen alot with stylists, they don't want to mix 2 bowls and they don't want to use 2 foils to lay over so that the blonde hair doesn't touch the stronger bleach. This helps my clients hilights to not get dry. Yes, using a good moisturizing shampoo like Olaplex is great but I see so much damage when there shouldn't be.

Joan Gentile, wash with shampoo once a week. The other 2 days apply the conditioner all over the hair minus the scalp then apply the shampoo at the scalp and wash. That way the hair is being protected. Then condition. You can also use your condition as a shampoo and wash it. Then you can redo it as a wash or leave in as a conditioner.

Yes, it's true..... if your hair got overly processed, it can really dry your hair out. Or even just having dark hair, will go brassy so it's more up keep to keep it toned, also cause the grow out shows faster you might have to come earlier. Great products help too. Im sure your hair looks great, darker and healthier!

We always spray the hair with the color lines porosity equalizer when using demi. It makes the hair take the color so much better than dry. Keune had 1 and now we use Oligo and I really like theirs too. If we are out of it ill use water but I really like the results with the product. Have a great day Kristi!! 😊

I am a middle aged man, I colour my hair ash brown over what is now natural grey hair. There is a lot of brassiness. Taking into account my age and natural hair colour of grey now, how I can I prevent the brassiness showing please?

thank you, the result is so pretty; are GHD tools too hot? they heat at a standard heat of 365°F; do you have clients who use GHD, do you see any difference in brassiness on their hair? I have another straightener with an adjustable temperature, but the curls don't hold as well as with the GHD. and I don't see any direct effect on the change in color of my hair. it goes to orange tones inevitably after a few washes, even if it what a bright blonde right after bleaching. probably too much phoemelanin.

Yeah, and with chi, Paul Mitchell, other high end flat irons. My chi only turns on and I bet it's set to 400. I don't use it anymore on clients. I feel like theres a difference between toner fading and going brassy/ warm vs coming back and looking orange. Usually the ones who style their hair everyday, looks burnt orange.
I feel like heat is heat no matter what brand and how great the tool is. Do a test on your hair. Pull a piece from under and tap it, let it sit for a few seconds in the same spot. At 320-330 it generally doesn't effect the color. Over 350 is when you see it discoloring
