I must say this was by far the best hair color tutorial for root shadowing I have EVER seen. Thank you for a video that was easy to follow and understand. You not only explained what you were doing but also why you were doing it, which is so important. You also included tips. Very professional and awesome job.
Hey I know this is super old but with covid-19 I'm trying to do my hair myself I am trying to go silver with a root melt/smudge and the last part is what I'm trying to figure out how to do. I looked up these products but she says toners a lot and what I found was either hair color or color gloss, do you happen to know which it is?
Actually I think I figured it out, the color gloss is used for toning as well so I hope I'm on the right track, someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, i really don't want to have this venture be a disaster
The stylist I have been seeing for 15 plus years used your technique from this video after I showed her, and the outcome was absolutely amazing ! Thank you
Absolutely love the color formula used! It’s so soft and natural. Also love how you really focused to maintain the integrity of the client’s hair while giving her the desired look. Wow!
The video and explanation was great until the end when the model wasn't turned all the way around for us to see her part and her front hairline. It's super frustrating when you watch an entire video and don't see then complete end result. We all know this is the most important part of the style ( what is seen in the part and front hairline) and so many Stylists do this.
Cher Pelchat I agree. If it was applied to go with the part and made a point to change the pattern for the frame of the face. Let’s see what you were explaining
I watched this video with my 15 year old daughter. The video was great. After we watched I went to the local Beauty Supply Store and bought Toners that I liked (similar to what she says in the video) My daughter followed the video and my hair turned out great. Thank you so much for taking your time to do the video. My daughter and I will use this video again & do this process again.
Hi, Darla Can you tell me exactly what toners you bought? I also want to try this and will be getting mine from my local Beauty Supply Store. Thank you!
FINALLY! a PROFESSIONAL that actually KNOWS what they are doing instead of yammering on about crap they obviously know NOTHING about! ive been sifting through youtube videos on how to properly bleach and tone your own hair at home and trying to find out the best products to use since i really cant afford paying 200$ to have it done at a salon which im assuming thats why alot of us are here. YOU DONE SUCH AN AMAZING JOB ON HER HAIR!!! THAT SHADE OF BLONDE IS SO BEAUTIFUL!
"Wow"... Great job... Beautifully done... If I had not seen it with my own eyes... I would not have believed this could work... I have been doing hair for over 30 years... This was amazing. "Thank YOU" for sharing this video/tutorial... ;)
Thanks for sharing this video, I learned something finally. It was easy to follow, this was a perfect 10. The other videos I've seen were too distractive, I had to click off. I'm glad I've found this. And I agree with every comment here, No noise, No people talking in the background, No music, so that really help, I was able to focus, on the technique.
Love it.... nice and clear... CONCISE, Straight to the point... non like others talking too much and not really showing a clear technique.... :-) it would HELP MUCH MORE IF YOU HAVE THE NAME OF THE COLORS SOMEWHERE IN THE SCREEN.
I did this but with cascading demi colors in levels 7, 8 and 9 cause my natural root is already a 6, and it came out awesome!!!! THANK YOU for showing us a way easy method! It came out identically just as good as the vids where the beauticians make it look sooo hard with foils, and weaving.
Shruffle Love Hi Shruffle Love! I can't get hold of shades eq...I use Wella Colortouch Demi's. Can I pls ask which colors 7,8,9 you used for your melt. My client has no virgin regrowth yet, but her first three inches of her old Demi have gone brassy/ coppery and it needs neutralising or going a bit darker. I made the mistake of putting her balayage pieces of lightener too high and got a slight orange mid band...it's not too bad though. I used 6.71 originally with 1.9% My biggest fear is melting into the blonde pieces and having them turn khaki/grey. Hope you can help xx
Jake Henderson - sorry for the late reply. This didn't come up in my notifications and I just saw it today. I didn't use Wella, so I am not familiar with the names to tell you, but in my experience brassiness of any type is still cut best using a silver or grayish demi or toner. Then you would just adjust the levels accordingly to cascade down from darker to lighter. If your clients natural level is 6, start with a 6 level demi, but dilute just a tiny bit with clear. You never get a good smudged-line look from the natural color to the bleached bit - if you use the identical darkness of the clients hair. Without seeing your client it's hard, but if her natural hair is ashy, stick to the silver tones and mix 50/50 with neutrals. If she wants her blonde ends to be platinum then keep with the 9 level silvery tones (violet if she's too yellow) mixed with clear and watch until you see the color blonde you want. I hope this helps for the next client!
Jake - also, if the bleach hitting the old demi is going brassy, you must look for another type of demi to use. The unique beautiful thing about Shades EQ is that is washes almost out in 3 - 4 washes making it ideal to overlap with bleach without going brassy. I know what you're talking about, because I've had that happen too with another demi I used, and so I switched. I am thinking you might be in the UK (or an Aussie?) from the kisses you left at the end of your comment? The professional line of Wella products are amazing, and I have heard good things. There is a lady on Facebook that is an expert at everything Wella, and deals with a ton of people from the UK who cannot get Redken Shades EQ. I belong to the group. Look up "Killer Hair Group for Crib Colorists". You can ask Wella questions there, and which kind are best to use for shadow roots, color melts, and balayage. Hope that helps.
@Asa Olsen sorry, never heard of Thriven recipe, but it sounds amazing. If you put the recipe list up here, I can try to suggest where to buy ingredients, and help with measurements - but her site is currently down.
I LOVE IT !!! What a Beautiful job you did on her hair. WOW !!! WE need A Few thousand of YOU all over the States because there aren't many good hair Dressers like you that can color. Thanks for sharing your talent. Great Work.

My turn next 😊 I did mine last night. Thank you So much my color is perfect and my hair is soft not dried out. I used the 7n on my roots 8nn next then used T18 an T 35 toners combed through an just right. Plus what a time saver. I had 1" brown /grey growth this blended beautifully. You Tops.!!!

Being a professional , you make the application look so easy, I'm going to have a go , as the result looked gorgeous and so fresh and natural. Also I noticed your model looked to have dry damaged hair at front, which improved greatly by the end result..... excellent no nonsense video x
I may have already left a comment, but this literally is my bible for this process. So simple, quick and straightforward. I wish more vids were like yours. Just get to it already. Thanks!
This is real good technique. Thank you. I have a client next week who requested for a dark shadow root smudge…beautiful work. I’m glad I watched your channel
giselle perez hah i think that all the time. Like what am i paying for school for when they dont even know how to do the more progressive and better techniques. Or better yet do and are too lazy to teach them.
Because Cosmetology school is to only teach you the basics and to pass boards. It's up to you once you get out to learn. Become an assistant first that is the best thing you could ever do for yourself.
Thank you so much for the education. I am grateful that you didn't make this a 30-minute + tutorial. If you were in my area, I would love to have you do my hair. Great Job!!!
please could you tel me what the middle toner was or if you could just explain all the different toners you used. I love your work please more videos xxx
can you tell me what products are used pls to get this look if possible using wella colour touch products due to limited line in the shop near me. thankyou
Hi really need your professional advice if you can help please? I really love this look and what you've done here.. my hair is quite similar to the model in that it's quite light with naturally dark brown roots. If love to have this done to my hair but am wondering how easy it would be to maintain? As in, as my roots grow and the colour melted part gets further down, would I be able to have that part lifted to the same lightness as the bottom and new darker roots melted again to continue the look as my hair grows?
Love it !!! I do have a few questions I realized her base was lifted pretty light and u put a dark shade on it. I’m doing something similar today and my question is why not fill her ? More of when is the time to know when to fill someone
Thanks for sharing. The outcome was pretty. About Redken eq, since it is a demi, will it lift the roots a bit to natural dark roots? Does it depends on the developer used for that (ex. Using 20 vol, to lift) or this brand is not meant for lifting some?
I’m going shades eq generic at Sally’s. But I bleached my entire Bob hair…. Haven’t toned yet… it’s orange. I’m considering the T18 and T-28 combination. Then go in with the shades eq for shadow root..🤭🤞🏻😂 🙏🏻
I don't understand. Are you using color or toner? What strength developer? You did a beautiful job, I would just like more details. Can you please list exactly what you used with ratios? Thanks.
This is AMAZING!!! I want to do this with my hair! Where are you located? Do you know any good stylists in Toronto that you can recommend?? You did a fabulous job!👌
Did this on my Daughter, I was missing 7A used 7N. She didn’t want the the clear, so we used 9V and 9P. It came out Very Natural and Beautiful Looking!!!👌👍👍👍Thank you! !, You have great talent, not only in teaching ....but in your generosity of sharing these videos with us!💐💕
So only toners were used? I'm trying to blend my roots with my extremely bleached blonde hair the best way I can because I will not be able to afford a salon trip, I usually do my own hair anyways so it's not that big of a deal, but going from bleach blonde for like 4 years back to a natural color is for me and I'm just trying to find the best way possible to do this, if you could reply with any advise please do!
You're amazing! Your techniques and the simplicity of your vdos are just awesome! Thank your for inspiring not just myself but others aswell! Keep the vdos coming!!! 👌👌👍👍👍👍🙌🙌🙌
I'm in school and I'm supposed to do a touch-up tomorrow on a level 4 root to cover gray. Instructor wants me to be confident in applying a smudge root and the lightener at the same time. I'm TERRIFIED! I'm obviously going to be supervised, but what happens if I get lightener on the darker color at the root? All I see when I close my eyes is some awful orange reaction! Instructor says she's a 3N naturally, so I'm just losing it! I've seen color melts with a lighter color below the root and then the lightener pushed up into the lighter color, and it looks beautiful, but I'm scared about this darker root! Puhlease! Ease my mind before I have to do this! ❤️❤️❤️ 🙏🙏🙏
I have been looking for a video like this one, for a long time. I love using redken shades eq because I have blonde hair and using toners instead of harsh chemicals help to keep the hair in a better condition. using too much harsh chemical breaking and damage hair. If I feel like having a couple daker tone it save to do this with a Demi colour. and is easier to go back to blonde. xxxx
Given the clients hair condition I’m assuming it’s so that the hair doesn’t grab darker as her hair is already bleached and damaged which means adding a direct toner without diluting it would likely cause it to come out MUCH darker than the desired goal as well as cause unnecessary damage. Diluting it with a clear toner keeps it even and light when the client is already close to the desired tone.
I love this technique,qustion...How come you can put a 6 on the root and drag it out to the blonde and it not go khaki with out pre toning where they join? So trying this xxx
Hey! I absolutely love these videos, you make it really easy to follow. I have one question how do you rinse the shadow route without it bleeding into the later end?
If I'm just shadowing the root, skipping the second toner, would you suggest letting it process the full time? Or would you suggest cutting down processing time or just watching it?
Your tutorial was like, amazing compared to the ones out there! They just say do this and that with no explanation. I am new to doing my own hair, not everyone can afford the 400 to 500 salon job. I figured, if they can do it, so can I. Now I gotta see if my husband will help me with it. 😂
Yes, we spend years perfecting our craft and continuing our education and can charge $400-$500 for color, but according to you someone with no experience or professional knowledge can do it? Please.
@ThisFallenBitch your education or experience has no bearing on her abilities so instead of insulting her for the sake of sparing your ego you might try to help or pass along some of that knowledge you so proudly speak of. Tearing down others never makes us feel as good as we'd like in the end.
I love it! One question, what would you use if the root color was a dark (level 6) orange/red color?? Would you use an ash level 6 toner or keep it the same as you used in the video? Thanks so much!
the ONLY thing I would have liked to seen is her hair dry BEFORE.. we see it wet right away.. Id like to see the difference between the Before and After.. otherwise AWESOME video.. no blathering on and on... thanks!
I liked the blonde before the smudge ..for me i like a dark root but want high blonde ( not icy or white) but dont care for the brown that is all in the hair ..But for her it was pretty & stylist did an amazing job.
this is the best video I have seen !! you are very good at what you do. a real professional. I love that colour. Please could you go more in depth and show what product and mixtures you use. I will definitely watch every video this is good educate videos the best xxxxx thank you so much for this video
It's the easiest too, and it looks identical to the ones where the beautician makes it look way hard with foils, and highlights. Sheesh, but you can just do this!
@@infiniteworlds5 I appreciate that you respond to questions. Shades EQ is like water. Do you know how Cynthia achieved the gel consistency? Also, what would I do if the client has gray framing her face? Last, Is the root and middle color processed for up to 20 minutes and the ends are on for up to 5 to 10 minutes. How do I rinse this? All at once or in sections? I would appreciate any help you can give me. Tth
Now I have a question, I had someone do a blonde ombre for me a while ago, and it's grown out over almost 2 years now, it's very long, and I want to apply a pastel blue to the whole thing to sort of create a blue ombre instead. Should I really get a different color for the root or will there be enough dimension with the fade I already have?

toner can't repair hair in fact you need to be careful they actually also damage hair not as much as bleach but its not great to over tone dry hair

I want to do this with my hair!
Where are you located?
Do you know any good stylists in Toronto that you can recommend??
You did a fabulous job!👌
Yes, the best one in Toronto is: Miss Mistleberries Haircrazies, Wonder to Gretchen Road 503,3rd floor.
Trust me 😂😂😂😂
Hey! Did you just wet the hair before you started or did you do something else ?
I've been using Shades forever. It is the best. Thank you for the video. 😊
What do you charge for this?
Maura O'mahoney I’m confused Bc she says “color” then she says toner. So which is used ?
Maura O
Best root melt tutorial I've seen! Thanks!
You're amazing! Your techniques and the simplicity of your vdos are just awesome! Thank your for inspiring not just myself but others aswell! Keep the vdos coming!!! 👌👌👍👍👍👍🙌🙌🙌
This video was extremely helpful I appreciate your explanations
this is gorgeous. got a great idea of how to melt mine now . and how easy you made it look. I do honestly think I can do mine myself
I have watched dozen of these tutorials and just got even more confused. However that explains a lot!!!! Thank you 😁😁😁
I'm in school and I'm supposed to do a touch-up tomorrow on a level 4 root to cover gray.
How did it turnout?
I have been looking for a video like this one, for a long time. I love using redken shades eq because I have blonde hair and using toners instead of harsh chemicals help to keep the hair in a better condition. using too much harsh chemical breaking and damage hair. If I feel like having a couple daker tone it save to do this with a Demi colour. and is easier to go back to blonde.
xxxx
Wow! Okay you nailed - it looks amazing when dry! Can you please list out the products you used for each step?
Your like a hair wizard! This is beautiful...looks soooooo real and natural.
Hi. Why did you add the clear toner t0 the lighter tones? Just curious
Let's say I don't have that clear toner. Can I substitute it w conditioner instead?
Did you highlight or balayage the hair first? Great shadow root!
Because you're using the Demi line for Redken, what is the fade??? As in, how long will it last? Is it the typical a few shampoos and major fade?
I love this technique,qustion...How come you can put a 6 on the root and drag it out to the blonde and it not go khaki with out pre toning where they join? So trying this xxx
Love this look
You used redken (on top) 6 (middle) 7 and (ends) 9 ???
Hey! I absolutely love these videos, you make it really easy to follow. I have one question how do you rinse the shadow route without it bleeding into the later end?
i need this too!
That's what has held me back from trying this myself...
I like her hair cut... is there a video that I can learn ?
thank you! love it! what formulation of seq would you use for a 50% grey haired client (she's only 35) ?
that is gorgeous girl!!! you did that!!!! 💁
Hi u
If I'm just shadowing the root, skipping the second toner, would you suggest letting it process the full time? Or would you suggest cutting down processing time or just watching it?
Your tutorial was like, amazing compared to the ones out there! They just say do this and that with no explanation. I am new to doing my own hair, not everyone can afford the 400 to 500 salon job. I figured, if they can do it, so can I. Now I gotta see if my husband will help me with it. 😂
Sometimes you have to know the chemical reaction to you can get allergic reactions to some of colors specially using bleach to the hair
What do u do to shallow GRAY & Blonde HIGHLIGHTS?
Can you use Redken Gel Colors for this? Great Video!!
I liked what she did. So did her client know that she would be working while she was getting done?
Please could you tell us how long it takes for the whole process? Thank you. Great job?
I absolutely LOVE it!!! Gorgeous color girl!! Great work!
I’d love to see a front shot. Beautiful color!
That turned out to be an absolutely beautiful color!!!
Thank you for this video!
I used this formula today and it turned out beautiful!
I love it! One question, what would you use if the root color was a dark (level 6) orange/red color?? Would you use an ash level 6 toner or keep it the same as you used in the video? Thanks so much!
the ONLY thing I would have liked to seen is her hair dry BEFORE.. we see it wet right away.. Id like to see the difference between the Before and After.. otherwise AWESOME video.. no blathering on and on... thanks!

There is the link to another video that showed her before 😁
I liked the blonde before the smudge ..for me i like a dark root but want high blonde ( not icy or white) but dont care for the brown that is all in the hair ..But for her it was pretty & stylist did an amazing job.
I really like this video. I am wondering, when you wash the colour out, is the de darker colour not bleeding to the lighter parts?
I love your videos Cynthia. They always help me out a bunch. Thanks for the upload!
this is the best video I have seen !! you are very good at what you do. a real professional.
So if I got that right, I do 6 on the roots, 7 middle part and 9 on the ends and blending everything, right?
Exactly. Blur the 6 into the 7, and the 7 into the 9.

Tth
Do you wipe the toner off your hands after each section when you're doing the mid toner so that it doesn't get on the ends?
Now I have a question, I had someone do a blonde ombre for me a while ago, and it's grown out over almost 2 years now, it's very long, and I want to apply a pastel blue to the whole thing to sort of create a blue ombre instead. Should I really get a different color for the root or will there be enough dimension with the fade I already have?
THIS. IS. BEAUTIFUL. I’m screammmminggggggg.
Love it. Looking for some place near by that does this.
What kind of toner did she use on the brown and middle sections? 🤔
