    Hi Hal, great work as usual, you have relayed the friendly version of poor Jevans demise. It was a massive pointer that virtually plucked him from within a boards length of dry reef below a sheer cliff face of about 100 ft.The 5-6 metre pointer came in from behind and started at Jevans lower half board and all and worked its way up like a snake would consume its prey. Javan fought till the end until he lost consciousness. The only witness to the attack was the father of Jevans girlfriend who took him surfing to blacks for his very first time. The father was on the wave behind Jevans and witnessed the attack during the portions the swell would raise him high enough to see the turmoil. To his credit he made his way to assist Jevan but jevan was completely consumed before he got there. The massive shark eyeballed him as it swam directly past him and headed back out to the deep, until it stopped about 400 m out to sea and regurgitated a chunk of the surfboard Jevan was using. In a state of shock the man in question paddled out to sea to retrieve it. His guilt of the event is still haunting him to this day as he encouraged Jevan to go surfing despite the attack up at cactus the previous day. Keep it mind that the beaches are at least 250 km apart as a crow flies. It was an extremely unfortunate event that still has repercussions to this day for the people involved. We had never had a surfer eaten on our stretch of coast until then and lost 2 within 30 hrs apart.My version has come from the only witness to the attack. I have the utmost respect for these creatures but when they are hungry and desperate they don’t hesitate to consume us in lieu of starvation. They know we are different and where we congregate for times of necessity. Eventually I feel they will realise we are easy prey and become part of their diet, but luckily for us they are not there yet. I belief it’s their dominance at the top that enables us to swim amongst them relatively unscathed. Let’s hope the food chain stays intact so as not to disrupt the equilibrium.Big fan, keep up the work mate. Spread the truth about sharks despite your shadow banning.

      JeSax, I am interested in sharks all my life and have got shark attack books since a kid. Thanks for explaining this sad shark attack on Jevan's further. Much appreciated. I figured it was a massive white shark that took Jevan, like in the Lewis Boren case a massive white shark took him from below too! They measured the bite marks on Borens's surfboard, and they estimate that white shark to be around 22-23 feet! It was larger than a 17-foot white shark which is scary! And yes if a white shark misses out on seal. It goes for easier meals like ocean swimmers, surfers or scuba divers. Thanks again.

      Yes, makes us fear the unknown. We are playing in the Great Whites World. Sharks make mistakes especially when they’re hungry. Sharks kill 5 people per year worldwide per year... If sharks really preyed on humans, there would be thousands of deaths a day. You are more likely to win the lottery than get a nibble from a shark…depending on your individual exposure in our great oceans.

He is sadly missed by all who knew him.Eyre Peninsula is not pronounced eerie it is pronounced as you would Air.Second the attack did NOT take place at Black point on Yorke Peninsula as you showed, it occurred at Black Reef outside of Elliston on Eyre Peninsula which is 610 kilometers from Black Point or 379 miles away .RIP Jevan.

    Great job with these videos. I was always interested in sharks! Sorry for Jevan and his family. At 3:30 that's a white shark dorsal fin. You can tell because it's gray with jagged back to it. I think some of these Great white shark attacks on surfers is when some of them have surfing wounds and bleed into the water attacking a shark. Like in the 1952 case of 16 yrs old Barry Wilson. Just after Barry was warned from a skin diver that his surfing wounds could attack a shark he was soon attacked and killed by a 12-foot white shark in California. First documented white shark attack. I have it in my shark attack books. Love shot at 2:52! Thanks for the upload.

      William Goins may be the first confirmed attack.
      I didn't do a super deep dive, my allergies are haywire.
      William K. Goins in 1926
      Goins was attacked while swimming off Haleiwa, Oahu, Hawaii.
      Witnesses describe Goins as giving a loud shriek before suddenly disappearing beneath the surface.
      His remains were recovered from a 12.5-foot (3.8 m) great white shark captured off Kahuku.[44]
      Theres others that were thought to be Great Whites much earlier but unconfirmed as to species.

    ASTONISHING odds, Hal. That’s one hell of a rare story but given the conditions, understandable. Or maybe the odds don’t mean as much as we think they do. The loss of life is harrowing but this guy must have at least some whispering impulse to avoid going to beaches. Awesome connection of shark stories.
    My only relevant shark stories come from locational perspectives. I’ve lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 25 years and loved to jog the trail from Monterey through Pacific Grove and into Spanish Bay/Pebble Beach. This route takes you beyond Lover’s Point and across the hub.
    Being a Great White Shark “freak” since childhood, I had read about the Barry Wilson and Lewis Boren attacks in books, but when I moved to the region in the late 1990s, I forgot the associations of these specific points with notorious attacks, even as I would jog the paved trail along all of it. You forget, even if you move to such an area as an adult.
    BUT, severe attacks near my home, at Marina State Beach, in 2007 and then later in 2011 ignited memories from books I’d read as an East Coast kid. A surfer was severely hit in ‘07 (big state news) at a popular but dangerous beach. Marina State Beach. It’s beautiful, but the beach is steep and the current is always horrifying. Great place to picnic and WATCH the waves or paraglide off the dunes. Don’t let your kids go in for lots of reasons, but in Summer … a hundred kids are allowed to get smacked by the waves.
    Anyhow, that 2007 attack was serious and “close to home” because the biking/running trail began in Marina and went all around to Pebble Beach. It reminded me of the stories I’d read and forgot as a kid and afterward I learned I had been running regularly past the very spot where Lewis Boren had been destroyed way back in the 80s.
    That spot was not far from Asilomar “beach,” which is really no beach-it’s devastating, jagged rock formations all the way to Spanish Bay. The spot where Boren was believed to have been “tasted” by a very large Great White is off a similar strand: rocks, sudden deep water, but reasonable surf maybe 200 yards out. On a run several years ago, I stopped at the spot and sat on the adjoining rocks and felt my skin crawl. Even the rocks are ugly and threatening on that stretch. The ocean is beautiful and the sunsets are great, but the water is threatening. No one swims there. Few surf there, that I have seen. Seals rarely attain the rocks because they’re cutting and uneven-most of them flop themselves along Cannery Row piers and slips.
    Lover’s Point is similar-several White shark incidents there or nearby in the past 25 years, as recently as 2022. And Lover’s Point is “swimmable”. Kayakers! Joyful paddle surfers!
    An acceleration of incidents. Sharky waters, for sure. I think I turned as green as the water sitting on the rocks one day looking out at the area where Boren was taken. Gah.
    Great work as usual. You’re the Shark Man. Stats and truths.

    Good morning Hal! Appreciate your story rendition. That poor boy never had a chance against this sneaky shark. I read one of the comments which claimed that his friend's father convinced them to surf here. His guilt is consuming but I believe that when it is one's time to go, it doesn't matter where you are, you are going. Hal, you are my shark Expert so yes I will eagerly wait
    for your show. Thank-you Hal! Have a beautiful day! 😉🥸🥰

    I live close to an area known for being a great white breading ground and the waters are typically around 50°F or 10°C, so i’m always in a wetsuit for me about 7 mm not on a surfboard but on an innertube in a mesh bag because I’m doing a type of fishing that requires diving into the water without a tank. Visibility is low until you are at the bottom, mostly. But I’ve never seen a shark while diving. There was one time there was ZERO visibility even at the bottom. And while I was down there ‘feeling for Abalone’ I collided with a large moving object! (I knew this because it had force coming from a different direction!) I swam to the surface of the ocean so fast I halfway breached the surface. Got on my tube and was headed the 300 meters to shore. Then what was probably only a split second later my friend popped up to the surface like I had and shouted to me, “Was that You?” That was such a relief to hear those words! And we joke about to this day, even though it was decades ago.
    But for that day, I was done with diving! And never dove again in water without there being at least 2 meters of visibility!

    I've been wondering what ever happened to that company in Australia which was working on the shark-bite-discouraging wetsuit designs - I think a show about that would be very interesting. Hal's POV would be a welcome addition to the entire concept.

    ...This could have been the same rogue Great white that attacked Cameron Bayes the day before. If it was the same shark how ironic. You have Jeff Hunter who witnesses the Cameron Bayes attack, and he was on the beach for this Jevan Wright shark attack too. Jeff Hunter and possibly same white shark-you got the same players here. Plus, maybe they can put warning drones to fly around the ocean- like some beaches have to warn swimmers and surfers that a dangerous shark is around the area-particularly top 3. Great white, Tiger or Bull shark! Great channel. I enjoy this!

      Or maybe humans would stop surfing at known White Shark congregation and breeding sites right next to huge fur seal colonies... Imagine that..

    Eyre is pronounced as air, and the map took us to Yorke peninsula, completely different but still in South Australia.
    I won't forget that day, they lived one street over from me. There were a few shark attacks that year.

    • @Scoondog
      @Scoondog 6 днів тому +2

      Not sure I think the shark would keep its distance. If I was a surfer my board would be painted like a killer whale and my dry suit would look the same!

    • @rockyevans1584

      Not necessarily. Very few orcas hunt adult white sharks, and white sharks will definitely go after juvenile orcas. Orca diets vary by location and preference of the pods

    • @MP_7
      @MP_7 6 днів тому +7

      Shark going after juvenile orcas? First time I hear this. That juvenile would be heavily protected by the entire pod, they would kill that shark like brutal murder

    • @sonnycorleone2602
      @sonnycorleone2602 6 днів тому +1

      @@rockyevans1584 I am interested in sharks all my life. A huge white shark will go after a baby humpback whale but probably not an Orca juvenile. Dare not. Too well protected by the Orca pod. That would be a suicide mission in my opinion. I agree 100% with commenter MP.

    • @kym393
      @kym393 6 днів тому +3

      There's actually a couple of shark dive businesses that operate around the Neptune Islands (not that far from where this attack occurred) that had a pod of Orcas come through a few years ago and nailed a gw. The sharks weren't seen for a month or two afterwards.
      I heard the same thing happened in S Africa a while ago too.

  • @jogglehead

    Scientists say Aussie seal populations never recovered from hunting and are continuing to decline. Could go a long way towards explaining why aussie GW attacks are so brutal.

    Biggest shark I have ever clapped eyes on was at Hangover bay Western Australia year 2023, a massive Great White!! This thing was soooo big and in only waste high water. We could see at least the top half of the shark out of the water, just swimming slow, I will never forget how something so big can swim in such shallow water. We had been in the surf the day before with no sight of the beast.
    All the best from Western Australia Shamesville!!!
