They were such a lovely car to drive. My brother in law was a chauffeur for the boss of Fry’s chocolate many years ago and I used to go with him to pick up the necessary supply of the families favourite tipple from the cash and carry. Harry brought back some wonderful memories with this car.
My father had a 1967 3.5 coupe which was one of the first ones. He had so many problems with it, that in the summer of '68 Rover asked him to take it to the factory so that they could investigate it further. I and a close friend (both 14 at the time) went with my father and had a great time being taken around their test track etc. They sorted out the car and it was trouble free from then on and my father traded it in for another new one in 1970. When he picked it up the jubilee clip on the filler pipe was leaking fuel into the boot. My father was more upset by the fact that the front seat backs were three inches slimmer front to back than his first one. We were going to the 1970 British Grand Prix when on the motorway one of the Avon Turbo Speed tyres blew out at over 90 MPH. Wheel changed only for another tyre to do the same thing; so we never made it to the Grand Prix.
I suspect he doesn't like them, because they are really not particularly good cars. They are only really beloved because of their prominent role in Back to the Future and perhaps the rare gullwing doors, but as driver's cars, they were a complete failure, with an anemic Renault V6 and poor handling.
it is a very awful car, it looks good but it's very impractical, very low power and very bad handling just overall a cheap bunched up car with a "unique" door design + Stainless Steel body.
