This is a video I've been thinking about doing for a while but it took me a few attempts to get the balance right. Although I cover mostly SWG these days I did play SWTOR for two years and I wanted to give both games their due. galaxies was so freakin amazing... honestly when I played it. I didn't really feel like I was playing just a game, it was something different. Like I went into the Star wars world and I could do whatever I wanted. I could write my own story and do my own personal objectives. I don't remember much cuz it was so long ago but what I remember doing A LOT was I pretty much lived on Corruscant I believe and I had a home... it was kinda a crappy home but I went out into the wasteland and farmed and gathered materials to craft speeder bikes and then I went to one of the main cities on the planet and I just went around selling the speeder bikes. It really felt like I was a used cars sales man. OMG it was so much fun, but that's what I did in the game. It wasn't about getting the best gear or trying to be some sort of elite player, it was just about doing my own thing that I felt was fun. Also Jedi were super rare, I think I saw one ONCE... (before that major update) so seeing one was amazing, them being rare was a huge part of the game. It really gave the game flavor.

I started playing Galaxies back in 2006, when it had a free to play month and I became addicted.. when it was shut down I was heart broken. Yes, there were some former player base run emulator servers, but they all lacked the thing I loved the most:
Starfighter piloting. That's the thing I loved from the get go, when you had that shabby ship on that shabby Tutorial space station, the same one for every faction you went to join after (naturally I became an Imperial pilot on my 1st char - a bounty hunter, because at that point I didn't know that in pvp Jedi was OP af, but you COULD change your profession... so I first went entertainer, wrote a macro/script to level myself to 99 in Mos Eisley Cantina while afk, did a whole bunch of story line missions but never accepted the mission XP, then switched Jedi and insta leveled up pretty high - on my 2nd char I became a trader/crafter and pilot for the neutral/smuggler faction, joining the Royal Naboo Security Force at first, only on my 3rd char I became a rebel; 1st char naturally became a "dark" Jedi, as close as Sith as you could go with force lighting which doubled as life drain, since you couldn't heal otherwise unless you went "good" jedi).
It's only now that I really remembered vaguely hearing about a new SW MMORPG and started looking this stuff up.
Honestly it looks better graphics wise (naturally, as it's a newer game), but other than that I think Galaxies seemed to have been the better game, with more freedom, more player run economy, et cetera.

The guy outside was a bounty hunter laying mines at the entrance to the cantina. A few moments later the Jedi walked out and blew up a few of the mines and was attacked by the bounty hunter. The Jedi defeated the bounty hunter and the dancer came out and asked how the bounty hunter was able to attack the Jedi (The Jedi was not flagged for PVP). The Jedi told her that bounty hunters could attack you regardless of being flagged.

I actually enjoyed both for various different reasons. Didn't original start out in SWG thinking PVP would be my favorite thing, but found that to be the most enjoyable end game content, so when SWTOR hit, I liked that you could jump right into PVP at low level, when you needed a break from the quest lines. I finally abandoned SWTOR 3 years ago, due to just finding myself getting bored with SWTOR and not being happy with some of the changes to the player expertise and crafting systems (but I nearly quit SWG years ago when it went from CU to NGE for the same reasons). Never really got bored with SWG with all the different things you can do (even in-game fishing, creature handling / beast mastery, player bounty hunting and extensive crafting system among other things) and now that there three successful options, SWGemu (Pre CU SWG), "SWG Legends" (NGE SWG with it's own customization), and "SWG Prophecy" (NGE SWG with it's own customization), it's pretty easy to enjoy and relive SWG through it's major iterations (Pre CU and NGE). In the end, SWG is without a doubt, is my favorite.

Pre-CU was trash. You are probably one of those people that quit when NGE rolled around and didn't stick around to give it a chance. Towards the end of the games lifecycle even most Pre-CU players agreed that the late NGE turned out to be better than Pre-CU. NGE was and still is way better, except for the jedi everywhere. Only thing I liked about Pre-CU was the class customization, the lack of jedi, and the factional pets. Otherwise, NGE has like 50x more content. And you don't see everyone running around in ugly ass composite armor that isn't even really something from Star Wars.

Looking back now, I agree with the mashing the two together idea. It would be nice if SWTOR would have an instance on each planet that was a sandbox setting where you could build a house/community anywhere on the planet and manufacture items and have small side-quests/missions to do. And of course, have the space version of the game be much like SWG.
If someone released an "updated" SWG, they could improve on the classes, have better graphics and smooth out the combat, and have better storylines/missions to level up (grinding is optional).
The possibilities and the outcome would likely be awesome, if done right, but game designers apparently don't want to do this for some reason.

The biggest problem with Star Wars Galaxies is also (sort of) a strength. It's player housing system. Sure, it has one of the better Interior Designer simulators I've seen, but uh... the houses are all out in the open world...
So Tatooine is like Sand-Coruscant. Naboo is like Grass-Coruscant. Lok is.... honestly okay. Dantooine is Purple Flowers-Coruscant. Rori and Talus are fine, because no one goes there unless a quest brings them there.
My point is - on most of the planets where you can place a house in the open world, about 75% of the area is covered in houses and buildings packed tightly together. One of the games immersion factors ends up ruining the immersion.

    • @spoton6906
      @spoton6906 3 роки тому

Agree with what you are saying as many POIs became literally choked with houses. Another bad thing, besides ruining immersion, was all the lag that the houses with all of their objects inside caused.
Some people dropped houses to keep harvesters out of the area. If it wasn't hosuing cluttering up everything it was harvesters. I used to drop havresters to keep houses away. LOL
Have fond memories of Player Housing despite the urban sprawl. Some people were very creative in their decorating.
Was surprised that there weren't Player Apartments in the non-Player Cities. Anarchy Online had those and it would have worked in SWG.
To me, SWG had the best and worst Player Housing in all of the MMOs that I have played so far.

SWG was first mmo I ever played and left it in NGE to go play wow. I also played SWTOR hoping it would bring back some of what I loved in swg. Honestly the difference is they are two different of games to compare outside of IP. One is a theme park mmo one is a sandbox which made SWG feel like a galaxie! Being able to train and teach other players was amazing the social aspect amazing! The exploring amazing! SWTOR combat was better than SWG the class stories were good most of them. I enjoyed the game pvp for what it was hutball mostly I played shadow/ sentinel and vice versa asssasin/marauder so was fun. I think the longer GCD of abilities made it feel slow compared to say terra/ Wow. I would of loved to see a combat overhauling for SWTOR making it a bit faster. Would of made it not feel as slow maybe not for range classes it felt pretty solid with sage/Smuggler or sniper. The lightsaber classes felt slower with the gcd they decided to go with but you got use to it after some time.

SWTOR has had a new space mode added over five years ago. It's still 'closed' in a sense, as in you don't just go travel from system to system and can't decorate your ship but you can pilot your ship freely and dynamically similarly to how you do in SWG, in Galactic Starfighter against other players. But it's still better than the 'ship on rails' mode.
It's still not enough compared to SWG's space mode but it's fair to mention that, as otherwise it'd be misinformation.

I was excited several years later when SWTOR was announced and many of my former guild mates from SWG rallied together and eagerly awaited the launch of SWTOR. I enjoyed SWTOR for a bit but it wasn't what I was hoping for. I realized then that the experience I had in early SWG would likely never be duplicated. On paper SWTOR should be better, just content alone dictates that, but SWG has some sort of hidden magic. To this day I play the SWGEMU (Pre-cu) emulator and even with the lack of content I look forward to logging in. I have tried getting back into SWTOR several times only to grow bored within a week or two. If I can ever get it to work I might try the SWG Legends server strictly for the added content, perhaps enough time has passed to look passed the previously game breaking changes. Time will tell, but long live SWG, the best MMO that ever existed.

They need to bring swg back online the only reason it was taken offline seriously was because BioWare was afraid people would confuse swg with swtor, that's why I it shuts down literally 5 to 10 days before the Old Republic launch. I can make a video talking an hour about all the good reasons why Star Wars Galaxy is a better game I like the Old Republic but, swg has so much more innovation than any other mmo has yet to become even in 2020. They are bringing older games back online like the original Battlefront 2 if they brought Star Wars Galaxies back online it would be nothing but profit because they have the card game Market that gave us items. Loot , furniture, armor styles, speeders, and they would make pure profits off of it,besides just maintaining the servers

and no, it wouldn't be profitable if it came back today. It wasn't profitable for many years while it was running and was overwhelmingly panned as an awful, boring game with almost no content, which it was

I love SWTOR quite a bit but its main flaws, in my opinion, stem from its theme park nature. I'm going to give SWG a try for the first time today and honestly, the main reason I'm so interested in it, is because I have always been a bigger fan of sandbox games. SWTOR has impeccable Star Wars atmosphere, an epic story and some great gameplay, but its over-reliance on combat and fetch quests as well as the theme park world design prevent me from truly, fully immersing myself and "living" in the Star Wars galaxy. I'll probably still play SWTOR more than SWG in the long run due to the fact that I have more time and money invested in it, plus it's a bit easier to get into, but I'm very excited to give this game a try!
I just hope that Disney realizes just how many Star Wars fans want an Elder Scrolls-like Star Wars game and gives it to us someday. Online or not, I want a game where I can go anywhere and do anything I like, to truly be able to live in the galaxy far, far away.

Would be fun to take ideas from it and since everyone will want to be a jedi, maybe make a lore adjustment in the game that every class is force sensitive in some way, that way not everyone will want to stop being their class? I’d play this mmo but at the time I had no computer knowledge and I was merely 5-7 years old when swg appeared
Now when the old republic appeared I knew I couldn’t afford a computer to play it

I enjoyed both. I just got back into SWG via Restoration 3 and still a SWTOR subscriber. I'll admit SWG NGE was not my favorite changes. I pretty much destroyed my character with the deleting on the professions I was playing. Still a bit salty about it.

Pre NGE I was a shipwright/droid engineer.. NGE came along and iirc Shipwright was paired with architect and droid engineer with tailor.

I personally felt that SWG and SWTOR would have fed off each other. When you get tired of one, play the other for a while. My daughter for a long time was just waiting for the next MMO to come out, because she and her clan mates would tire of them easily. On to the next one. I guess someone thought there is only so much interest in Star Wars, only so many fans, so there is not enough water to service two wells.

SWG was and still is the best mmo ever in my opinion. The depth of immersion I felt while questing, crafting, building and decorating my house in a completely player made and run CITY, hanging out in the cantina in mos eisley, every little bit of the game was truly a unique masterpiece the likes of which hasnt been fully replicated since.

Worth mentioning you probably want to play version SWG before the rebalance. You can get servers that give you the end game, as it was in 2011. Most SWG players will want a sandbox, free form experience.
In terms of player choice, it’s almost on a par with EvE with everything in old SWG pretty much being player driven. I like both, but my heart is with old school SWG. There has not been a game like it since, nor do,I expect will there ever be. Modern MMOs handhold more and more and lime to give every player a lovely high level loot drop every ten minutes just for playing. No one is allowed to feel inferior or behind. Everyone in modern MMOs gets a shiny, gets a mount, gets a companion, gets a group finder, gets enough currency, gets.... all of it. Just by logging in. Convenient for many I suppose, but it feels pretty shallow.

tor:hotbar botting.. and send companions on gathering missions... and dungeons like every other mmo... but with purely mirrored classes between factions... and ashara as wife/minion whenever you go out to fight some random bantha somewhere... but not in the beautiful x-70b phantom, thats reserved for the imp spy

I'm pretty sure that the SWG servers aren't actually illegal, the only ones that could be considered as such would be the NGE ones based on leaked source code, the rest were reverse engineered and require an "official installation" it's no different than running a custom gta server etc.
