Spent most of my days in this cave on main. Looks like it came straight out of a private server looking back on it. Weird to think there are now nostalgic days in OSRS.

If it isn't the cockroach cave with the 2x 5000 xp lamps, that drop rune scimitars for f2p players in 2010, then it is not the best dungeon. I'm sorry.
I had no idea it was this OP. Slayer is actually one of my least favorite skills in OSRS and I didn't spend too much time training the skill inside the cave or outside.
I'd actually prefer if slayer masters assigned things from their own area, removes most of the flavor of the different slayer masters, get a task in morytania then have to trek over to al karid. Of course each slayer master would need to scale in level. That was always my biggest disappointment with slayer.
Honestly this is such a good idea. I'm not sure if the logistics of it would make it really possible but it would be so cool to have to go to different masters for different high level tasks. I mean, konar being the only way to get hydra is the only thing like this I know of (granted I'm only 71 slayer so ya boi don't know too much) but it would be a way to be able to have value at every master rather than just Duradel, Konar, and Nieve (until you are 100 cb). Plus it just makes sense thematically. Like why would a dude in the tropics send you to kill some weird troll things on a largely frozen island in the north.
it was a great dungeon; made pvming with people more enjoyable imo. i remember killing abby demons in that small area and people saying gz a lot when you announce you got a whip lmao

Ironically, I loved it beyond the mere nostalgia since items were so limited, even having high stats didn't give people and edge and even a single mid-level player could make a difference. The introduction of Ancient Magicks changed it up a bit and the freeze effect had a great negative impact but it still lasted for a while. Ice Burst and Ice Blitz weren't the worst but Ice Barrage really ruined the fun with its high freeze, high damage, and area of affect all working together-though not everyone had Ice Barrage on release so it had a few months before the fun chilled out completely.
That was in a time where the mentality of rs was very different too, looots of people played veeery casually. A lot of cwars players just outright left and never came back because they never expected to have a high enough magic level for barrage. If you didn't have barrage, you couldn't compete. That spell RUINED castle wars for most of its players. By the time I was high enough to barrage cwars was so dead that I couldn't find a single game on any world :p
We’ve bitched about Jagex since 99’ and we’ll continue to bitch. But they brought back our childhood game and have kept it alive for us to enjoy as adults. There’s merit to that.
Not going to lie. When I got my Qp cape on Rs3 the lore was etched in my mind. The quests leading to Guthix dying were amazing. When I got my qp cape on osrs I breezed thru spamming space bar.
That's a damn shame then because quests like Sins of the Father, and A Kingdom Divided are really excellent quests. Having played both games and knowledgeable in the Lore for both games, I did not like the direction RS3 took post Rituals of the Mahjarrat (starting with The World Wakes). Having direct divine contact and intervention and having the character be the "chosen one" in a way feels derivative and derails the established story and lore. This is supposed to be a time of mortals held by the fragile balance imposed by the edicts of Guthix. The remnants of the past you discover provide enough mysticism and grandness while still grounding the story to the multitude of storylines affecting the races of Gielinor in their individual conquests, liberations, and schemes. That's my opinion though.
I got so confused when I came back to runescape and my friends were talking about this. I thought they were talking about the old waterfall slayer dungeon in RS2 lol
If you think about it they really never fixed the exploration for slayer since you are still just going into a cave but it has the exact monsters only then you kill close to 200 then getting another task and maybe going to a slightly retextured cave
I played on release and hell yeah i remember all of this, the nostalgia again strikes :v It had like 75%-80% of the slayer monsters... and i remember getting my first dfs there from the 2 iron dragons near the lava lol.

This dungeon was the best thing in the game. Ill always remember it because i got my draconic visage in there from an iron dragon on my ironman who was level 71 back in the day. No antifires and poking it with a leaf bladed sword. Good times… Also dont forget gargoyles only started to become profitable after the slayer monster buff in like 2017. Before that no slayer monster dropped alchables as they do now, gargoyles included.
I remember it getting pretty crowded as you say, especially at gargs/abby demons. I wouldn't necessarily say that nerfing the dungeon "made slayer more fun", I mean in the end you're still killing the same monster just in a different area lol. But it was definitely a needed change cus of the crowding
I think there are two main reasons slayer was people's favorite skill even when it was terrible and slow: people used to combat being the main way they interact with games; staggered reward/randomness leads to more of a dopamine response, it's gambling without needing to put much risk in.
Yeah RuneScape is a lot of that Skinner box stuff. Grinds so long and so brainless that people literally do it on like 5 accounts at a tile because that’s goes little game is in this game. I really like the quests, the lore, and even a lot of the mechanics are really cool but exp rates are just too glacial in osrs for my 26 year old self to ever see most of that in osrs.
I was there for that cave and rememeber the day of Diverse Dungeons update. That update was definietely needed since the original dungeon was way too overpowered.
I remember doing partner slayer here with my buddy. Good times, but I'm glad they reworked the slayer caves. It just felt weird to have all of these creatures in the same cave., So many cannons...

13:00 is a good point even today. Slayer is "everyones favourite skill" but everyone complains if they dont get a burst or cannon task or a specific monster they can kill for drops. It always seemed to me to be one of those things that everyone says they love it because theyre supposed to say they love it or you get picked on(see also: beer) but they actually think its boring and grindy just like everything else.
Then they went on and did the same thing in Zeah but this time with a multiarea so you could barrage every creature, far surpassing nieves cave in terms of powercreep bringing along exp/h rates for slayer never before seen almost rivaling those of rs3. Yet nieves cave was the problem I guess... just jagex logic. And the community seem fine with Zeah cave for some reason.
I like how RS3 did their slayer cave in that it didnt have all the tasks making it way smaller and you couldnt cannon in there so it only really offered some ease of competition / better access to annoyingly placed monsters.
I still think it's funny how OSRS players call Slayer a "real skill", but Dungeoneering is "just a minigame that combines all other skills", whereas Dungeoneering atleast still includes puzzles. (similar to how CoX works and stuff.)
tbh, i think a detailed list of all tabs and it's assigned resources should be a standard in every webbrowser, like a little taskmanager for webbrowser tabs. a tabmanager. it is the one single reason i would consider using opera gx.

Know what I think? If they kept the code to the caves. They should use the cave for Special Events. Much like how they do their Trailblazer Event and others. Maybe rejigger the layout a bit, pretty it up, and add in maybe some Epic Event Slayer Only Boss. To which need to jump through a billion hoops to even look at. Not kill. That will be another billion hoops. Boom! Not only give some old school feeling back into the game but also have a fun area to use for special events once or twice a year. Maybe put in different monsters each go around or even just Event Only monsters. Or the monsters are the Dev Team themselves. Who have been really bad and want to destroy the RuneScape world. Only the Player can stop them!! Ain't the first time RuneScape had some very Meta and Fourth Wall Breaking moments.
God i remember when Obor came out, I got the 2h maul or whatever it's called on my 2nd key, sold for about 28M (i don't remember if this was before the GE, I think it might have been in, or atleast the trading post WHICH I MISS!) I was probably one of the first 20-50 to get the item. I almost wanted to hang onto it for a day to make more money, but it crashed so damn quick once the youtubers and pvpers were done 0 day testing
It was a needed change but they should've designed a more interesting replacement cave. It's as barren and generic as a cave gets. They managed to do it right with Chasm of Fire but dropped the ball on the remaining stronghold dungeon
One way osrs could do better with the game balance is when a new update Is introduced it should include some content from unrelated skills, mini games, and quality of life. That makes it so that old content does not get lost in time and includes players that wouldn’t of participated. Example: if the new runecrafting mini game included an item in the reward shop that can enhance a melee weapons speed by 1 game tick or an item that increases clue-scroll drop rate but lowers chances for all other drops. Even have items in the runecrafting reward shop that can be used for other mini games like soul wars or pest control.
True! I think more shortcuts that don't use agility would be great as well. Like maybe a dungeon where theres a "redwood tree root" in the way, and you need 90 wc to access that section.

Not only do quest cape people not know lore neither did the OS devs lmao. RS actually has a good story that the devs severely messed up when DS2 came out. (Dragonkin shouldn't be involved until after the "while Guthix Sleeps quest" And the stone of Jas is taken by a Mahajarrat "forgot his name")
Slayer is actually my least favorite skill in osrs. One of the reasons i hate most other MMOs is because their "quests" are "the big bad evil guy is amassing an army! Go thin out their numbers!" AKA... kill 25 slugs. it was just so boring fighting the same monster over and over again.

i played from 2013-2015 and i spent so much time in there lol, 99 slayer.. but once i hit 99 i quit cause the game lost all meaning lol! i loved slayer
That cave absolutely FUCKED every other cave in the game. It was so nice. I also miss the stronghold of safety back in the RS2 days. Those cockroaches were killer xp and dropped so many alchables.
"Players who are extremely against any kind of powercreep." That lasted a few months, those people left. Nearly every update passes polls, and every powercreep update passes. OSRS was taken over by RS3 players who think 2010-12 is the golden age of RS long ago. Mat K was right.

Pretty sure gargoyles didn't have their loot buff yet when they went in the cave, I remember them pretty much just dropping granite mauls

Something that I think should be noted is how incredible that early content was with reused assets.

Maybe rejigger the layout a bit, pretty it up, and add in maybe some Epic Event Slayer Only Boss. To which need to jump through a billion hoops to even look at. Not kill. That will be another billion hoops.
Boom! Not only give some old school feeling back into the game but also have a fun area to use for special events once or twice a year. Maybe put in different monsters each go around or even just Event Only monsters. Or the monsters are the Dev Team themselves. Who have been really bad and want to destroy the RuneScape world. Only the Player can stop them!! Ain't the first time RuneScape had some very Meta and Fourth Wall Breaking moments.

God i remember when Obor came out, I got the 2h maul or whatever it's called on my 2nd key, sold for about 28M (i don't remember if this was before the GE, I think it might have been in, or atleast the trading post WHICH I MISS!)
I was probably one of the first 20-50 to get the item. I almost wanted to hang onto it for a day to make more money, but it crashed so damn quick once the youtubers and pvpers were done 0 day testing

It was a needed change but they should've designed a more interesting replacement cave. It's as barren and generic as a cave gets. They managed to do it right with Chasm of Fire but dropped the ball on the remaining stronghold dungeon

One way osrs could do better with the game balance is when a new update Is introduced it should include some content from unrelated skills, mini games, and quality of life. That makes it so that old content does not get lost in time and includes players that wouldn’t of participated.
Example: if the new runecrafting mini game included an item in the reward shop that can enhance a melee weapons speed by 1 game tick or an item that increases clue-scroll drop rate but lowers chances for all other drops. Even have items in the runecrafting reward shop that can be used for other mini games like soul wars or pest control.
True! I think more shortcuts that don't use agility would be great as well. Like maybe a dungeon where theres a "redwood tree root" in the way, and you need 90 wc to access that section.

I played only a little when the cave was op and had only used it a handful of times before "quitting rs" and when I came back I just assumed I had misremembered the cave.

Not only do quest cape people not know lore neither did the OS devs lmao. RS actually has a good story that the devs severely messed up when DS2 came out. (Dragonkin shouldn't be involved until after the "while Guthix Sleeps quest" And the stone of Jas is taken by a Mahajarrat "forgot his name")
Slayer is actually my least favorite skill in osrs. One of the reasons i hate most other MMOs is because their "quests" are "the big bad evil guy is amassing an army! Go thin out their numbers!" AKA... kill 25 slugs. it was just so boring fighting the same monster over and over again.

sounds better 💁♂️ i have ADD so i will grind one skill for days or weeks then switch randomly.. would have been perfect to just grind an then switch when burned out on slayer
i played from 2013-2015 and i spent so much time in there lol, 99 slayer.. but once i hit 99 i quit cause the game lost all meaning lol! i loved slayer

That cave absolutely FUCKED every other cave in the game. It was so nice. I also miss the stronghold of safety back in the RS2 days. Those cockroaches were killer xp and dropped so many alchables.
