  • I found some pepper tree logs on the side of the road on the way to work. They had been sitting for some time and were quite dry. After looking at the unique wood I decided to try a fire theme resin pour to go with the pepper wood. I wanted to try something new that I read in a book about hybrid woodturning. I used urethane resin instead of epoxy. Supposedly it would turn easier and polish better. The downside is it has a 12 minute working time and the wood must be stabilized first ( I left that part out of video, rather tedious). Upside is the blank is cured and ready to turn in 4 hours which is amazing. The book suggested to turn the piece with carbide scrapers. I found this odd and did not care for this technique and went for my bowl gouge when hollowing the bowl. I tried to use mainly scrapers on this piece and in the end I’m happy with the result. Had a bit of frustration in the middle and wasn’t liking the look. Too much resin not enough wood. Although I was very pleased with the shape, the entire rim of bowl being resin wasn’t a good look in my opinion. So I decided to turn it into a very shallow bowl to get the look I was after. In the end, I’m not sure the urethane resin is all that great. The time saved in the cure process is negated by the multiple day process of stabilizing the wood. I didn’t find it turned, sanded, or polished differently than epoxy resin. Think I will likely be using both in the future depending on the wood being used. If you have experience with both types of resin and have some tips or suggestions please leave them in the comments. I’d love to hear them. Thank you for watching!!!

      I bet the music for this video was improvised by looking at the video. And it is done so well! It makes this video so much better than on other channels.

      Yes, they do make a mess! Not just watching, but copying, I have a casting the pot now with your walnut and resin. I used Sapele, I will try it out in about another 2 days. Your finished products do show your skill and attention to detail. Good Job!

      @mavwoodturning7994 Thats awesome, wish you good luck! The Sapele should look amazing! What color resin did you decide on? Hope you have a great day!

      Indigo blue with white and hypershift . I have been using designer epoxy, it has a demold time of about 72 hrs, when I get it done I will send you a photo , might have to do that by regular email.
      I mix the night before to give the epoxy a little more viscosity, then the colors usually separate better

    How do you determine how much resin to make?

    • @squareandlevel
      @squareandlevel  8 місяців тому

      I generally use math to determine volume of pieces subtracted from volume of cylinder form but this piece was different because I could not easily determine volume of the odd shaped pieces. I have purchased a few books on wood turning and one had an excellent idea of using rice to backfill the piece while in the mold and then had a conversion chart for cups of rice to grams of resin. It worked really well I am considering making a video in the future explaining my technique for blank preparation in full detail but want to dial my technique in a bit more before giving anyone questionable advice. Thanks again!!
