Sadly, this one didn't come out as perfectly as I'd hoped, but it was a fun one nonetheless! For this project, I cut and sanded eight pieces of cherry into... I'm not sure what kind of shape you'd call these, but "sun beams." I then cut out 8 additional triangles and sanded them thin to act as beams of light shining inwards. I then hot glued them all down to a mold and cast them in a dark purple epoxy resin, which is where the problem arose. Because I wanted the swirls in the resin to stay in the final cast, I used a resin that cures relatively quick (about 45-60 minutes of open time), and although my garage was quite cold when I did the pour, the volume of resin I used was way too much for this sort of product. It wound up flash curing, and the result was that the resin cracked in about 5 places deep within the casting, which were slowly revealed when I was turning the piece. Although I tried my best to seal the cracks with some CA glue, some sanding dust still worked its way in a few during the wet sanding. In the end, though, I'm still really happy with this piece. It's probably the most technically challenging bowl I've done to date, and frankly, I'm still amazed I'm able to get these to completion at all :) I sure love that purple, too!
If you'd like to be the proud owner of this piece, we are currently working on an online shop that we are aiming to have open in mid February, so check back to the channel often as we will have links posted here regularly!!

I can just sit and stare at this all day long. Just beautiful 😍
I found it much harder to skip ahead than most wood turning videos. Thanks for keeping my wandering mind occupied. Best of luck!
Thank you so much, Rob, I appreciate that!
I think the idea is great, especially when you resorted to a jigsaw and sander to shape the sun beams and light beams. It shows that you don't need workshop full of precision band and table saws to achieve great results. You've obviously learnt a lot during this procedure and I really look forward to your next piece.
Thank you, John, that's very kind of you!

Whate a great shade of purple!
One of the nicest pieces I've seen, simple pattern. Bur really pops
A truly stunning object and one I'd gladly own. This seemed pretty "low impact" also. Having recently fallen down the turning rabbit hole on UA-cam, as much as I'm delighted by the end product, I always have the nagging feeling about a 1 kilo piece having been created from 10 kilo of material and that remainder ending up in landfill. Bravo!
Gorgeous, gorgeous gorgeous 100% gorgeous!!!!
Very nice! Those colors look great 👍🏻beautiful!
Brilliant idea and color choice. Looks magnificent. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely Beautiful, boy what I would give for bowl like that. Great work
The bowl design is nice, and the color is nice!!
Wow, that came out amazing.
Great work !! Beautiful piece !!!
What a beautiful piece ❤ thanks for your effort
Wow! I think that the cracks you speak of give this piece character. You can tell you took your time with this design. This bowl is so beautiful and the pigment is delicious. 💜Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Thank you, Daniell! Glad you liked it!
oooooh! VERY elegant. I like the shape a lot, it compliments the pattern very nicely.
Mama Mia! This piece is so beautiful! You are so talented and creative! I love this piece of art. Perfection! Bravo!

Man, you make this look like such a peaceful and rewarding process! Makes me want to try it out!...only I'm afraid of motorized sharp objects and splinters and... 😅 I'll live vicariously through these videos instead.

Very well done
Muy ingenioso y muy bien hecho, realmente hermoso!!!! 👏👏👏💖💖💖🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Love your work, inspirational. So good to see you don't use total joke boat epoxy. I get triggered seeing so many youtubers fight and struggle with shit epoxy. There is so many genuine deep poor epoxies out there.
WOW! This is very nice. No doubt you got an A all through Shop class, and beyond.
Thank you!!
Turn out beautiful
Wow, this is such a beautiful bowl. I love the design and the color. Thank you for creating such an amazing piece.

My pleasure!
It appears there's nothing you can't achieve. 💞✨
excellent work Bro 5STARS.
Thank you, James!
Gorgeous work. :)
Thank you!
That's a pretty bowl.
Beautiful; and you don't need perfection for something to be absolutely perfect.
Handmade does not equal perfection. Factory made does. This bowl is gorgeous.
This is beautiful! I would love to see one with a dark red color to the resin.
Nice idea, very beautifully made👏👏👏 I really like it, bye😊
Thank you, Tazio!
Красивая работа 💪🤝👍
Wow wow wow!!!
Great job sir
Thank you, Jeremy!
Con la vernice finale è diventato un gioiello..
Exquisite piece ... and you say it didn't come out perfectly ... well it looks incredible 👍
If I could produce a piece like this then I'd be over the moon, but my expectations outweigh my experience at the moment sad to say
Thank you, Barry, I appreciate that! And you'll get there! I think I was probably in the same boat as you a couple of years ago; I taught myself mostly from just watching others on UA-cam, and slowly but surely, the skills start coming!
Sei un Genio 👍👍
WOW AWESOME just AWESOME.😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Это очень красиво!!!
Would you be willing to share where you obtained the thin vinyl material you used to hot glue to your form so the epoxy would form and not leak? Your work is stunning!
Arte ❤
Grazie❤
Awsome
Bellissima 👍
insurmountable desire to fill that thing with green grapes and blue cheese...
Super cool piece! I can't get enough of your work! I just discovered your channel yesterday and I have now binge watched all the content you have so far!!!
Also, I can not wait to shop your online shop, so get it done already!!! Great great stiff!!!
Haha, thank you, Jayson! And it's on the way! We're trying our very best to get it up and online sometime Feb 20th-27th!
welp. it's a masterpiece. 👍
Put that on an led display and I bet it'll look proper magical.
Great idea!
Just nothing less that AWESOME. What is the material you use for the base and the form for the resin?
Thank you, Jerry! And I just use poster boards! From Michael's. I use a foam board for the base and a plastic bendable board for the sides. They should be in the poster section at your local craft store.
Nice job Forman. New sub here
Thanks so much for the support!
Amazing art work by amazing talent, where do you exhibit your art??
😍
OK, I want everything you make...
шикарно
Where did you get the plastic for the sides and bottom to make the mold? Just a beautiful piece. Nice job.
Thank you, Dick! And I got that material from Michael's in their posters section (the sort of posters you might have used for school projects). I'll usually use a foam one for the base and a plastic one for the sides. Works fairly well!
@@formanwoodworking Thank you. Very helpful. Love your work.
What is the flexible material you use for the mold?
Just a plastic poster board I picked up from Michael's (it's in the same section as their cardboard and foam poster boards). Works great!
Where do you get the thin plastic from for your forms
Hi Joel! Those I just picked up from Michael's (the crafts store). They have an aisle with various poster boards (the sorts of things you'd use for school projects), including paper, cardboard, foam core boards (which I use for the base of many of my moulds), and they also have plastic sheets like the one you saw me use in this project. I just cut off whatever size strips I need for the project I'm working on and use those for the walls (they've worked amazingly well for me). If I recall, they were a touch pricey, but again, I've had no problems with them, and I can usually get a handful of bowl blanks made from just a single sheet.
What type of material are you using to make the mold?
Poster boards! From Michael's. I use a foam board for the base and a plastic bendable board for the sides. They should be in the poster section at your local craft store.
🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love these videos. One question though. What do you do with the waste material? Is any of it re-usable? Ok, that was two questions. :o)
Hi Andrew! I'm pretty good at using all my cut-offs in future projects, but everything turned off on the lathe sadly gets tossed.
