This is my first attempt at turning a true hollow vessel. I used some scrap walnut off cuts from the legs of my end table build. This was great fun and I plan to make more hallow vessel type pieces in the future. I got some new tools I am using in this video, I plan to go over all of these as well as the new finish I am using in a video soon. This may be the last time I use the urethane resin for a while, I want to go back and try the epoxy again now that I have had some experience with the urethane. Hoping to get a solid technique locked down so I can share some useful information. This was the closest I have come to having a mold fail in the pressure pot. I don't think I will try a diameter smaller than 7" with the polycarbonate sheet. All and all I am pretty happy with how this piece turned out. I really liked the black mixed in with the blue resin. I think the proportions are a little off in the finished piece, but I may just be too hard on myself. Will definitely be trying this one again down the road. Thank you very much for watching and I hope you have a great day!
Lovely! By the way, I believe the heat from the resin caused your hot glue to soften and fail. If you just reinforce with something a bit more heat resistant, like a nice strip of gorilla tape or equivalent heavy duty adhesive strip on the outer edge of the overlap, you won’t have that problem anymore. You can even go smaller, although I think the resulting mold will be less circular.
The way the wood layout gives a beautiful spiral effect. Also, the spacing enhances that as well. Excellent in all ways! Looking forward to seeing future projects.
Well done the result was a damn fine piece anyone would be pleased to say I made that. Iam really glad you tidied up your work area before you turned the camera on. That made an impression on me straight away. 👍
Thank you Mr. Bones. The “laser thingy” was a good purchase. Glad I picked it up. Thanks for watching! Your next video almost done? I hope there are more amazing water color plan paintings.
Absolutely beautiful turn. It’s obvious you’re very meticulous with the entire process. The blue with that walnut contrasts beautifully. Fantastic work.
That is beautiful and I'm just starting to get into turning and this is so insprational. I have some many more questions after seeing that vid! Thank you for feeding my curiosity.
That’s awesome. Congratulations! I’m still learning as well. Don’t hesitate to ask if there’s something specific in a video you have questions on. I do my best to reply to everyone. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a great day! Scott
Nicely done piece. I also have used A. slow cast for a long time. Have always turned urethan and never epoxy. I do get some major chipping with slow cast if to aggressive with my larger diameter carbides! Enjoy your videos, stay safe.
I swear I spend more time cleaning than making stuff😆. I partially do it for the videos, as I feel people are more likely to watch if the shop is clean. But I’ve also found I am much more motivated to be out here when it’s not a disaster. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great day. Scott
Really liked this turning joy to watch thanks plus you were lucky with the casting could have been a big mess but all was well thanks again pal Regards Jamie
@@squareandlevel no worries really enjoying watching your videos you obviously have a great natural talent only found your channel recently keen to watch more of your videos Thanks Jamie
That turned out awesome! This video is the first time I've seen a woodturner use a laser pointer while hollowing out a vessel. It seems as though most of it do it blindly while hoping for the best.
Definitely something I will be trying in the future. It’s on my list for future video ideas. I’ve always really liked the way resin looks butted up to charred wood. I’ve made some pieces in the past using electricity to burn the wood and back filled it with resin. It is a very cool look. Thanks for watching! Hope you have a great day!
That is the best combination of wood and resin turned into a vase that I've seen. Still a bit confused about the original "off cuts". The dimensions seemed to be pretty accurate or is that just me? Anyway, congratulations. This was brilliant.
Thanks for watching. The off cuts were from a previous video of building two end tables. I did cut the pointy ends off so they would fit in the pressure pot, but I just got lucky the angles worked out. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I hope you have a great day! Scott
Very nice. Very good shape. Good proportions. Very good color. Good production. Don't care for the music, but I don't like any music. I like the sound of the tools. I would like some commentary or at least a few captions. What brand of resin and the source? What thickness of the polycarbonate and the source? How long in the pressure pot? Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
A very elegant piece with the wood and resin shapes. I can’t wait to hear about your tools. I have a Jet midsize lathe and am wondering if there is a hollowing system I can use for deep pieces like this. I also noticed you using a buffing pad of some kind. That is also something that looks interesting to use for a smooth and perfect finish. I am enjoying your videos and hope you add some narration or subtitles down the road. Thank you
Thank you very much! I do plan on adding some narration In the near future. Possibly the next video. I struggle with it a fair amount and it makes the videos take significantly longer to make. We will see. I am also considering making a second channel. One for no talking and I’ll use this channel for talking. Still trying to figure this all out. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great day!
These epoxy art pieces are really beautiful, but so many people do it now that it’s kinda pedestrian. Don’t get me wrong; these guys have way more talent, skill and vision than I will ever have. Beautiful piece. Plus, I’d probably put some chicken in the cooker too. Two birds, one stone!😜
Very nice work! Very creative. Is this unique to you or are there plans or a video with dimensions and angles that are needed or might you be interested in sharing some angles and dimensions? I’m also a hybrid turner and would love to give this a spin!😊
Thank you for the kind words. Unfortunately I do not have any info on the dimensions used in this piece. The scrap wood used were all off cuts from some end table legs I made. Sorry I don’t have any better info to share. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day. Scott
Make sure you are using a high temperature hot glue gun with high temp sticks. Or at least the dual temp sticks. Hope that helps? Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day. Scott
It’s definitely possible, but might not be worth the money needed for all the parts. There are some videos posted of people who have done it with a full list of parts needed. I thought about it and have decided against it. I will by a new lathe when I’ve out grown this one. It’s been an amazing first machine to learn on tho. Thanks for watching. Best of luck. Scott
@@squareandlevel Thanks for the quick response to my question. I still have the motor that came with my lathe but no longer have the bracelets to mount it. Where can I find information for mounting brackets ?
This piece was made with urethane resin which has a 12 minute working time. There is no time for degassing in vacuum. The pressure pot squeezes any bubbles down smaller than the eye can see. I rarely use vacuum at all anymore regardless of resin type. I feel the pressure pot does a great job. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day. Scott

"Maybe too hard on yourself"????🤔 I think that the colors looked great. And others do too!!!!! 😃
The blue you use compliments the wood, but as a redhead I'm partial to green.

Wow very nice. I want to try the same. Why do you put the epoxy under pressure and not under vacuum ?
