The thing to keep in mind is these modern straight wall pistol caliber ammo leverguns (all, not just the 92’s) are a lot like semi-auto handguns. There’s just some ammo they aren’t going to work well with. All leveraction, pump action and semi-auto guns (long guns or handguns) are ammo length and bullet shape sensitive. Some more than other. For example, you don't think about it much if you are dealing with a rifle cal. like 3006, 308 or 223 and even 30-30. Those are bottleneck calibers. Bottlenecks always feed better than straightwall ammo, whether it is a rifle cal or a pistol cal. That's because you have a small diameter bullet going into a really big hole by comparison, the bottleneck chamber being much like a funnel. The original Winchester 92's were designed to work with bottleneck ammo in the 1.5" to 1.6" OAL with round nose flat point bullets. Ammo like 44-40, 38-40, 32-20 and 25-20. What that means is they may not work well with really long 357’s or really short 38’s.. The really long 357’s are too long to clear the cart stop coming up or they tend to hit the top inside of the chamber before they make the turn into the chamber. The most common problem with the shorter 38's is the gun will throw out, flip or stovepipe live rounds with the empty's. This is because the shorter 38 coming on to the carrier from the tube can bounce forward off the carrier cart stop enough that the rim is too close to the rim slots in the guides and when you lever it the carrier just catapults them up or out with the empty. Also, bullet shapes can make a difference. Bullets other than the round nosed flat point profile they were designed for can cause issues. The truncated cone or TC style bullets will work but can end up too long for some guns. As for SWC, the cutter bands tend to hang going in the chamber. For 38’s, what I have found to cycle best is a 158gr elongated round nose flat point seated above the crimp groove and just crimped into the side of the bullet just above the lube groove. This allows them to be loaded to a 1.5” OAL. You can do the same with the 44 spec. too.
I found with mine that commercial rounds from Magtech 38sp 158 grn LRN worked great, but it had trouble with Federal 38sp 158 grn LRN. And the only noticeable difference was that the Federal was a more streamlined bullet than the Magtech. Anything shorter than either of those constantly double ejected or stood straight up in the receiver. I don't reload myself so I have to buy or send out for reload, so your information on what to specify when getting reloads it very helpful. I have run 357 cowboy loads (I shoot Cowboy Action Shooting) and they seem to work okay, but are more expensive then 38 sp.
Great video!! Glad you got it figured out. Bought the stainless 357 yesterday just put 10 rounds of 38 and 1 357 it cycled like a dream never shot 357 in lever action love the Rossi so far. Also have the 22 but not stainless. Love it as well but only put 30 rounds through it so far. Thanks for sharing be safe have fun enjoy
New rossi stainless 20” 45 colt. Racked lever twice before loading and right side cartridge guide screw fell out. Back to Rossi it goes without even trying it out. Big mistake going with Rossi Taurus.
Same thing happened to me about a month ago the very day I got it. I sent it back and they fixed it and it has been excellent in the few days I've had it back. @@muttomaki1

Hi George, I made a comment last video about my Rossi 357/38 that I have owned for over 17 years I use all rounds factory and I also load my own ammo, I have pistols and revolvers in a lot of different calibres. I have used target cutters that are seated flush in the case with reduced loads in the Rossi without any feed problems, not bragging, just appoint maybe the earlier ones are a slightly different. Also I am in Australia I don`t know weather those polymer coated projectiles which you are using were invented in Australia, but we have been using them for over 20 years. They can be used at velocities up to and around 2,000 ft per sec without lead fowling. Like your videos keep them coming. Cheers, from Australia.

Rossi or no Rossi, reloads or no reloads, I’m going to run out back and whittle myself a shooting staff right now. I also just, with many misgivings, am taking delivery on two Rossi 92’s his week. I have all the good lever guns, but thought the Rossi’s would be good project guns. But, seriously the depth and precision of all of your videos even to the level of advanced reloading, just amazing.
Hi George, great videos. I do notice that you fire the tube mag. empty, until the chamber goes click. I always find it best to cycle the lever one more time to ensure there's not a round in there with a dimpled primer that didn't go off. Thanks again for the videos.
Hi George, I have been shooting the Rossi 92 in Cowboy action for 4 years now, I can go through 10 rounds in 3.5 seconds, my key is starline brass in 38, Badman bullets 127gr rn, loaded to 1.50 inches. So far over 2000 rounds with just 1 stove pipe. Good luck with yours.
I never shoot 38 Special brass in a gun chambered for 357 Mag. When I want 38 Special velocities I load 357 Mag brass to the lower velocity. I don't wanted to deal with two different residue rings in the chambers. Thanks for sharing I enjoyed this video.

@@TargetSuite Those of us who don't reload (or in my case, no longer) whenever I shoot 38 spcl out of my 357s, like ALL guns, a good clean with solvent and a brush takes care of any residue buildup. I usually bring a swab with a bit of solvent to the range in fact, to start soaking the chamber(s) before I head home.
I like shooting down there is well. I just saw I wish I had more consistent shade. It makes for difficult video. None the less, I will continue to develop that area down there. Maybe some shade will show up😎
Remember the old days when reloading and you might drop a primer, like a penny, and think, "Oh, I'll just pick that up later!" Now, when you drop a primer you are down on your hands and knees with a magnifying glass like it was a lost contact lens!

Just got back from anniversary dinner and here is your video! A friend has a Taurus 357 revolver and we were shooting and I had a blackhawk. The bullets worked fine in mine, they were too long for his revolver and would not allow the chamber to turn. Same head scratch. Research on Taurus revolver has a shorter cylinder than some other 357 revolvers. Length does matter.
Hi George, glad you solved the issue! I think also, it would be interesting how the chamber looks like after a thousand rounds of 38 Special. Maybe you could have a look at it with your borescope and show us if there is any residue.

I might have told you this before, but when we went to the S&W 9mm from the S&W model 10, I scooped up about 1500rnds of the issue 38 +P 158gr lead hollow point. Never had much chance to shoot any of it but started to shoot it out of the Marlin 1894 357. Not one problem (except for the fouling) Almost feels like a 22 as far as the recoil goes. BTW, just got a new Henry in 44 and another in 45-70 side loader. The 44 has the brass receiver with the octagonal bbl. Really beautiful gun and fun to shoot.
@@TargetSuite I have. I need to stop (at least for a while) I suspect our government is going to make a move on our gun ownership and hopefully the lever gun will be off their radar. But I doubt I need to explain to you how much fun these guns are to shoot.
Hi George, that ejecting two rounds at once would have real freaked me out if that Rossi was mine. With all the lever rifles I've had never had one do that. Had failure to feed correct or jam and since I don't reload my self I just have a measuring tool to check the bullet length. Enjoyed the video always like to learn new things!, Thanks George
Hi Terry. I wasn't freaked out but I sure was bummed out. I thought I had a video just about ready to upload. And then that happened. But it worked out and I was only a few hours late today.
Had a Mini14 that did that while firing to qualify for a DCM rifle. Kept running out of ammo real fast with 30 round magazines. And of course, the Mini throws empties 956 yards and fifty feet in the air at 2200fps. Look for my empty brass on the neighbors' roof a half mile away. Now, I use an AR that politely deposits brass in a nice neat little pile six feet to the right. I have Rossi 92s in .357 and .44. I think they are really missing the boat not chambering a 92 in .327 FM. It's a natural fit.
Hey George, as always I enjoyed this video. I have 2 Rossi 92s. One in 44 mag and 1 in 357. My 357 is a 16" big loop carbine. Like you I've had issues with "short" 38 rounds in it. So now I load the 158gr Acme Lipstick or a 173gr cast HP. You'll probably notice a similar issue if you load longer boolits in the 357 case. Mine just will not cycle 180gr boolits or even the 173gr. I don't know how much you've used those Acme Lipsticks but they are great!!! I have loads for them in about everything I load for. Keep up the good Videos 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for your comment! I've used the Acme round nose flat point bullets in 44 mag as well as 4570 and they have performed fairly well and some guns. The 158 grain semi wadcutter from Acme had no issues whatsoever in this Rossi 92. And they're really cheap!
In my experience all model 92's and their clones are picky about overall length and feeding. Free advice do not try a Keith style, real Keith style not the bogus claim ones, in a Winchester 92. What a jam I had getting that cleared. Just today I wanted to shoot my 357 Rossi with 357 ammo loaded with a NOE 183 grain bullet I cast. It would not feed it was to long even crimped in the top crimp groove. So I experimented and seated it deeper up to the point where the bullet nose begins to taper. Feeds slick as a greasy minnow. I will just reduce my powder charge to compensate for deeper seating and it will all be good. No it will no push back in the case seated outside the crimp groove neck tension and a slight crimp more than take care of that.
I just bought this same rifle a few hours ago. I haven't fired it yet. After seeing your experiences with it, I loaded it with 5 rounds of 38 special 158gr Berry's bullets that I reloaded and tried to replicate the issues that you've been having. It appears to cycle fine for me. I hope it goes well when I get out and shoot it.

Well, my new Rossi 92 is doing the same thing using the RNFP 125 grain Mo Bullet Co. It cost me some seconds and misses in the CAS match. The bullet ejected instead of loading and I did not see it happen and found the bullet on the shelf. On the second time, I saw the bullet fall out and was able to load another round but it messed up my timing. I plan to go back to the .357 round for the length. I can try some 158 gr as I have lots of those. Sadly, Berry's plated bullets are not allowed in CAS. Boomstick Arms in Texas worked on my gun and the trigger pull is a very slick consistent 2 pounds.
I believe the Remington UMC green/white box 38 spl 130gr fmj, was loaded long, I ran a couple box through my chiappa 357 when I first got it with no feed issues. Great shooting as always, that Rossi trigger is very nice! Rossi is a very versatile rifle in other calibers also I find, I own a Rossi 45 colt 24 in octagon barrel and it will feed long Ruger length cartridges (likely due to that action used with their 454 Casull cartidge perhaps)which allows me a wide range of bullet shapes and weights with some extra powder room if I wish. Looking forward to more great video's!
I too had issues feeding 38 specials in my Rossi R92 (stainless). I have to make sure that the OAL is 1.525" or better. My live rounds if less would get stuck in the receiver which required me to take the receiver apart to get the round out. It was a challenge to do this and would require me to leave the field and take the carbine home to do the work. It was very, very frustrating. After getting the OAL figured out, it hasn't occurred again. I truly love this carbine once figured out. Frustration beyond belief until then. Now I love this gun. It is light and very manuervable. I think I like it better than my Henry's which are pretty heavy.

Hey George glad you got that straightened out for the most part. I purchased a Henry Big Boy in 357/38 because of you. I really like the rifle a lot. The funny thing is while both calibers are accurate. The 357 just runs smooth while the 38 are a little rough cycling. I don't know why but I don't want to wait for a problem. Good info thanks
@ARRL member I've noticed from your previous comments that you're not a big fan of the Rossi. I'm going to do a full review after at least a thousand rounds to see if any real problems show up. If not then I'm going to be a big Rossi fan because the $300 difference between this rifle in it Henry is just too much for me to overlook. Now if I could afford it, my safe would be filled with miroku lever guns or even vintage Winchester's😉
@@TargetSuite I purchased the Henry about 6 months before Covid. I saw you with your lever rifles in pistol calibers. So it's your fault. But I'm really happy with it LOL. That's something I never would have got for myself ordinarily. I have a good deal of milsurp firearms from the early eighties when they were cheap and in great condition. I got them as a young soldier. I retired after thirty years in 2010 a Sergeant Major 15 years in the Ranger Regiment. I only had my Marlin 444 as my only real deer gun. I could have used a Mauser or M1903 . I have modern rifles and shotguns too. That's why I like your channel it's all new to me.
@@TargetSuite - If you get an older Henry without side gate loading or a newer one with it, either way you can unload it by removing the magazine tube from the front. Having to work the live rounds through the action could be dangerous. Is money more important to you than safety?
i have an older 92. I have shot 38 and 357 new and reloads never with a problem. A comparison with the two bullets is sort of fun. By loading a mag round and then a 38 and shooting, the difference is astounding. Great rifle, reliable and accurate.

I have a bunch of those and they are great quality. 2:57 That's called a "binary" lever action. 😎 And they said it couldn't be done! I cast a round nose flat point (RNFP) 158 gr., similar to your Montana Bullet Works, but a little lighter. A very "bullet-y" looking bullet. I also cast a 158 gr. Keith SWC for .38/.357 cartridges. When seated out in .38 cases they both work fine in my Model 1892 Winchester converted to .357. The SWC is a little less "smooth" in operation as the sharp shoulder seems to catch just a little, but if I cycle the rifle briskly, no issues. But yes, the cartridges need to be a longer OAL to work well. Your shooting stick is a good idea. That one could also double as a canoe paddle! 😜
Yes that is a Boyt case. Between my son and me we have six just like that. But we have different colors :-) As for the shooting stick I was desperate. I knew I was a little wobbly today and I had put out those 12 oz cans of Diet Pepsi. If I was going to hit any of them I needed help. And that was the only "stick" in the back of the side by side.

I was hoping to get a 16-inch model myself. I think it would make a great personal defense weapon. But this is what showed up at Ron's guns. So I probably still have a 16-inch model in my future. I hope😉
Great channel. No way you are not a gun Armorer sir. My favorites are a Marlin 1895 GBL 45-70 6+1, OR a Rossi 454 Casull that cycles🙏🏼? I am a shooter not a gunsmith is why Rossi scares me. Other than Bighorn Armory or others 5k + for a pistol round 454 no matter how cool is not worth it when 45-70 Marlin,Winchester, and Henry's exist 👍

Had mine out today. Loads were 357 mag with 160 gr Hornady silhouette bullet and Lil gun powder. I'd been shooting cast and needed to adjust my sights for the next lever gun match. After making the change I got a 2.5" @ 100 yds from the bench. I think you have figured out the issue with OAL being the problem. Good shooting for using a boat paddle for a rest.
i've had some similar problems with my second hand rossi and agree with someone below who said to shim the right cartridge guide. it takes some trial and error. i used some self amalgamating tape so it was easier to re seat the guide when reinstalling. I also had an issue with double feeding into the lifter, sometimes one of them would actually get behind the lifter making it a pain to clear. In that instance it was the left guide with the tube stop spring that needed pushed out slightly.mine also tends to occasionally nose dive into the top of the chamber, not sure why but may be the lifter angle not being correct and not sure what to do to fix it. another one to watch after extended firing is the knurled pin that connects the bolt to the lever, just tap it in from the left every now and then, it can come loose and cause the lever and bolt to not cycle at all stuck half way, again this is a bit of a pain to solve and requires almost complete disassembly. they can be finicky things but learning how they operate really makes you appreciate the design and they have to be the most fun guns out there. also recommend a reduced power extractor spring, makes it a lot smoother for that last bit of travel, although installing it can be an exercise in extreme patience.
Amen! There have been several suggestions on putting a spacer underneath the right side cartridge guide rail. Supposedly that solves the problem with the light bullets. I may try that down the road once I get several more hundred rounds through the gun. By the way I always appreciate your comments. Since getting back from vacation I'm a little bit behind on my UA-cam watching.
@@larrymiller5171 I’ve had Rossi 92 in 44 magnum years but I’ve never tried any 44 special through it, since I reload I don’t see what the point is since I don’t have any other 44 specials,I would just load them lighter or load them hotter, however I do have a38 special revolver and so if I got one and 357 I would probably also want to be able to 38 specials, i’ll probably get a Winchester 73

Ive seen such a wide range of opinions re: the Rossi , from : ‘ Trash ‘ to ‘Great’ Pretty consistent has been the comments that they often need some attention to smooth things out, and paying attention to OAL and bullet types for consistency. I reckon Henrys might be more reliable outta the box, but at substantially higher prices. I took the plunge today and ordered an R92 357/38 20” stainless cause they popped up for the first time Ive seen in over a year at pre-covid price ( $635 kygunco ) Im willing to work thru small issues and hope I get ‘ a good one’ . Stevesguns and brownells spring kits look to have some good value. Again thanks for your excellent content and Im going to dig thru your videos 👍
Great to have you! And yes, you seem to have gotten the big picture about the Rossi. But I'd like to get more feedback on the latest generation of Rossi's. My suspicion is that they are substantially better than what has driven all of the negative comments.

My little 92 eats anything I feed it.. I can truthly say not once has she had a feeding or extracting issues...from what I can get from different videos & reading the comments seems people talk about built up of gun powder to which I say CLEAN YOUR RIFLE...The cleaner the rifle is the better it will perform....great video keep up the good work...

Bought my son the same gun for his 18th bday. It’s runs everything but it’s much smoother action with 357. Fun little gun to shoot. Feel like a cowboy in the old west with a lever action.

Too much Magizine spring maybe ? I hear overpressure from the extra length may cause issues. Rossi had a bit of a reputation of putting 20 inch springs in the 16 inch barrel carbine, and the 24's in the 20's..a bit of overpower.
Thanks for the video. I've been doing Cowboy Action for about 7 years, and consider the Rossi to be a starter rifle because it is not reliable under competition demands, but it is comparably inexpensive. Uberti 1873 rifles in 357 must have a 38spl loaded to a certain minimum OAL, or the rounds won't feed and jam. Looks like Rossi rifles have the same issue.
So I had the same issue, and I an using 170 grain round nose in 38 special at 38.7 mm, the same bullet length of Riffle PPU factory .38 special, and they work alright now mate.
I have an older Inter-arms pre-safety 357mag m92. I skip the feeding issue by loading my 38spl loads in 357mag brass. I am currently using the Badman 157grn RNFP polymer coated bullet with a dose of 3N37 powder 😊 lm loading some right now.
This is interesting. By the way, my local Gunsmith / Dealer did 'find' a Rossi R92 'Triple Black' model for me. It's been ordered and I should soon have it to try for myself. I'm looking forward to this.
My large loop lever action Rossi has performed flawlessly in both calibers since I bought it in 2014. I have put at least 5000 rounds through it. The guys at the range lov the "Rifleman" look of the gun too!
George, I haven't had this problem with my Rossi, but I know how to deal with it if it pops up. I mostly use .357 bass in my rifle. My trigger isn't nearly as nice. Thanks for the fine video!---TPf
My r92 has the puma crest on the left side near the saddle ring. Feeds anything even the rat shot 357 with square tips and shorter semi wad cutter 38 special and man it's very accurate
Never seemed to have a problem with my Winchester 73 even mixing 38 and .357 in the tube at the same time. It seems to function as fast as I can physically cycle the action. No issues with both factory ammo and reloads. Using a 158 gr lump for both and the action cycles smooth. Wonder what the diff is between Rossi and Winchester (Miroukuo now) as far as feeding rounds goes. Interesting...
I have a Rossi short rifle with the same issue. Also the extensive use of 38 cases will cause a ring of fowling and lead build up in the chamber forward of the case mouth which could interfere with the chambering of mag cases I use mag cases for all loads in my lever actions and all other mag chambered firearms. Good luck.
When I was a kid, I was taught to never use .22 Shorts in a Long Rifle chamber. Because of that, I NEVER use shorter cases in .357 Mag or .44 Mag chambers. Handloading is the answer, with the correct cases for the gun's chamber.
I've had one of this caliber in Brazil for over 30 years, it's never had any problems, it's very accurate. This carbine is a true masterpiece. Problems happen with inadequate ammunition, this even happens with Glock pistols.
I had major cycling issues with my Rossi 92 in 454 Casull, I worked on the carrier and the outer edge of the chamber. I was using a normal round nose bullet, the carrier was bringing the cartridge up on too steep of an angle, jamming the nose of the bullet on the front of the chamber, I also worked on the loading gate, a real finger biter. I learned you need to cycle these guns with some force, until they wear in some.
I'm hoping Rossi is changing things so that there doesn't have to be so much "working in". This gun seems to indicate that they're headed in the right direction. By the way, how do you like that Rossi in 454 Casull? It's definitely on my list of guns to get.
@@TargetSuite Since It’s working now, I like it, I killed a nice 8 point buck with it 2 years ago, dropped him in his tracks. I bought a new savage axisII in 6.5 creedmoor and bought a Boyd’s laminated wood stock for it, that’s my deer gun now. I’ve also got a Thompson Center Pro Hunter in 460S&W magnum, that I’ve killed 2 8 points with so far. The 460 is legal anywhere here in Indiana, while the 6.5 is only legal on private ground.
There is a valid argument for the economy of a 125 gr cast bullet. You might try loading that same short /125 gr bullet in 357 magnum cases to get a bit of extra overall length. Usually all that is needed ( beyond a die adjustment) is to add a couple of tenths to your 38 spl powder charge. My bet is that those would cycle great. The longer length /shorter jump to the rifling should make for better accuracy too.
These are gr8 rifles. I lov the 357 /38sp . Mine has did gr8 on cycling both. Its only real issue is the loading can be tricky. After relieving the sharp edges on and around the loading gate its been way better. I works best with pc keith style or jacketed bullets. The more I load the slicker it gets .
Yep, I have issues with rossi too. I have the ranch hand 38/357 and it has always had feeding issues with. 38spl. Keeps jamming the nose into the top of the chamber, yet 357 always seems to function just fine.
My first Rossi.357 mag absolutely didn't like light bullets. It would drive tacks with almost any 158 grain plus round, but you couldn't keep any 125 grain on the paper. Never found a light bullet it like.
Be careful with the Barry's bullets in the 92. Since they have no cannelure, you got to make sure you have enough crimp on them to make sure they don't compress in to the case when under the spring tension of the tube magazine. At the same time you can't make the crimp so hard that it cuts in to the thin copper plating and makes it separate from the lead. It can be done and they shoot very accurately. You just got to make sure you dial it in properly when loading them.
Wow George. Thats an interesting phenomenon you have going there. Seems the cartridge is just the right length and weight to allow if to flip up out of the guides.
I had one of those. Never had any issues with it though my bud's .44 certainly had problems with short .44 special loads. I didn't shoot that gun or its companion revolver that much before I decided that PCC's were of quite limited utility. Not junk, and I still have some 9mm PCC's but not much more than a toy.
Your double ejection problem is why I prefer Marlins. In the Marlins, the carrier doesn't start lifting the new cartridge until the fired cartridge is ejected and the lever starts moving back.
Hey brother, it’s not just yours. I’m having the same issues. About lost my religion because of it. I did come to the same conclusion as you though. The older 92’s from Rossi worked fine with both. Shame it won’t use the little 125gr lightning though, it’s a nice little economical bullet. Sorry about your issues with yours, but glad it wasn’t just me. Lol
I have a Rossi 92 in .357 and mine loves 125gr bayou bullets. I've shot that load out to 200 yards at steel targets plenty of times with great success.
I have a Henry BBS carbine. It states in the manual it has to be 158 grains and similar overall length to a .357 Magnum. I tried a box of .357 Hornady leverevolution at 140 grains. And it struggles to reload it. So I'm sticking with 158 grain wadcutters. Those cycle and shoot totally fine.
If you can hang on for a month or so I plan to do that full review after a thousand rounds or more. I think that would be a realistic review. Especially for an import. I really like the Rossi, but it is, after all, a product of Brazil. Great people but Rossi has struggled with quality in the past
I just saw this video now. I know it's a bit late, but you know how some resizing/decapping die tends to resize the brass way too narrow so it will cycle in all other firearms? Next time use the fire formed brass from that carbine and decap only with no resizing. This will leave the diameter of the brass large enough to be caught by the lip inside the receiver. Hope that works!!!
I love lever guns and own 2 of them. One a Savage 99 in 300 Savage and the other a Winchester in 30-30. both are pre 64 models. As much as I would love to own more lever guns, I can't justify it. My answer was to make reduced loads rather than buy pistol cartridge rifles. I now can shoot my lever guns with a lot less recoil and at a price point that makes it easy to go out and do some plinking.
Only problem that I've had with mine is Me short stroking the lever just slightly. The Keith style semiwadcutters are usually great for accuracy. The Rossis are dependable & lots of fun especially with a Blackhawk to go with it
Hy-tek is an excellent bullet coat. It's especially good for places and people who won't shoot semi/full metal ammo, but it isn't just bare lead for those (me) who don't like that.
I can't speak for this Rossi, but I've had two of their .22 pump guns. The first was incredibly inaccurate. It took some time, but as it turned out, the rifling petered out about 8 inches from the muzzle. Yep, it turned into a smoothbore. So I unloaded that one. A few years later, I bought another one, thinking that they must have improved by then. That one turned out to be bigger piece of junk than the first one! It jammed constantly. Nearly every sort of jam you can get, that rifle got, no matter what I did. So I unloaded that one too! I have heard that Taurus has since acquired Rossi. I'll wait a spell before I get another one, but in the meantime, no more Rossi stuff for me!

Nobody does
The thing to keep in mind is these modern straight wall pistol caliber ammo leverguns (all, not just the 92’s) are a lot like semi-auto handguns. There’s just some ammo they aren’t going to work well with.
All leveraction, pump action and semi-auto guns (long guns or handguns) are ammo length and bullet shape sensitive. Some more than other. For example, you don't think about it much if you are dealing with a rifle cal. like 3006, 308 or 223 and even 30-30. Those are bottleneck calibers. Bottlenecks always feed better than straightwall ammo, whether it is a rifle cal or a pistol cal. That's because you have a small diameter bullet going into a really big hole by comparison, the bottleneck chamber being much like a funnel.
The original Winchester 92's were designed to work with bottleneck ammo in the 1.5" to 1.6" OAL with round nose flat point bullets. Ammo like 44-40, 38-40, 32-20 and 25-20.
What that means is they may not work well with really long 357’s or really short 38’s.. The really long 357’s are too long to clear the cart stop coming up or they tend to hit the top inside of the chamber before they make the turn into the chamber.
The most common problem with the shorter 38's is the gun will throw out, flip or stovepipe live rounds with the empty's. This is because the shorter 38 coming on to the carrier from the tube can bounce forward off the carrier cart stop enough that the rim is too close to the rim slots in the guides and when you lever it the carrier just catapults them up or out with the empty.
Also, bullet shapes can make a difference. Bullets other than the round nosed flat point profile they were designed for can cause issues. The truncated cone or TC style bullets will work but can end up too long for some guns. As for SWC, the cutter bands tend to hang going in the chamber.
For 38’s, what I have found to cycle best is a 158gr elongated round nose flat point seated above the crimp groove and just crimped into the side of the bullet just above the lube groove. This allows them to be loaded to a 1.5” OAL. You can do the same with the 44 spec. too.

I found with mine that commercial rounds from Magtech 38sp 158 grn LRN worked great, but it had trouble with Federal 38sp 158 grn LRN. And the only noticeable difference was that the Federal was a more streamlined bullet than the Magtech. Anything shorter than either of those constantly double ejected or stood straight up in the receiver. I don't reload myself so I have to buy or send out for reload, so your information on what to specify when getting reloads it very helpful. I have run 357 cowboy loads (I shoot Cowboy Action Shooting) and they seem to work okay, but are more expensive then 38 sp.

New rossi stainless 20” 45 colt. Racked lever twice before loading and right side cartridge guide screw fell out. Back to Rossi it goes without even trying it out.

Hi George, I made a comment last video about my Rossi 357/38 that I have owned for over 17 years I use all rounds factory and I also load my own ammo, I have pistols and revolvers in a lot of different calibres. I have used target cutters that are seated flush in the case with reduced loads in the Rossi without any feed problems, not bragging, just appoint maybe the earlier ones are a slightly different. Also I am in Australia I don`t know weather those polymer coated projectiles which you are using were invented in Australia, but we have been using them for over 20 years. They can be used at velocities up to and around 2,000 ft per sec without lead fowling. Like your videos keep them coming.

Hi George, I have been shooting the Rossi 92 in Cowboy action for 4 years now, I can go through 10 rounds in 3.5 seconds, my key is starline brass in 38, Badman bullets 127gr rn, loaded to 1.50 inches. So far over 2000 rounds with just 1 stove pipe. Good luck with yours.

I never shoot 38 Special brass in a gun chambered for 357 Mag. When I want 38 Special velocities I load 357 Mag brass to the lower velocity. I don't wanted to deal with two different residue rings in the chambers. Thanks for sharing I enjoyed this video.

@@TargetSuite Those of us who don't reload (or in my case, no longer) whenever I shoot 38 spcl out of my 357s, like ALL guns, a good clean with solvent and a brush takes care of any residue buildup. I usually bring a swab with a bit of solvent to the range in fact, to start soaking the chamber(s) before I head home.
That’s a sensible approach. I guess I never considered doing that because I have way more 38 brass than 357..
I have to use a drill gun with nylon brushes to get to 2 different residue rings out. It works, but is time consuming.

Just got back from anniversary dinner and here is your video! A friend has a Taurus 357 revolver and we were shooting and I had a blackhawk. The bullets worked fine in mine, they were too long for his revolver and would not allow the chamber to turn. Same head scratch. Research on Taurus revolver has a shorter cylinder than some other 357 revolvers. Length does matter.

I might have told you this before, but when we went to the S&W 9mm from the S&W model 10, I scooped up about 1500rnds of the issue 38 +P 158gr lead hollow point. Never had much chance to shoot any of it but started to shoot it out of the Marlin 1894 357. Not one problem (except for the fouling) Almost feels like a 22 as far as the recoil goes. BTW, just got a new Henry in 44 and another in 45-70 side loader. The 44 has the brass receiver with the octagonal bbl. Really beautiful gun and fun to shoot.

Hi George, that ejecting two rounds at once would have real freaked me out if that Rossi was mine. With all the lever rifles I've had never had one do that. Had failure to feed correct or jam and since I don't reload my self I just have a measuring tool to check the bullet length. Enjoyed the video always like to learn new things!, Thanks George
Hi Terry. I wasn't freaked out but I sure was bummed out. I thought I had a video just about ready to upload. And then that happened. But it worked out and I was only a few hours late today.
Had a Mini14 that did that while firing to qualify for a DCM rifle. Kept running out of ammo real fast with 30 round magazines. And of course, the Mini throws empties 956 yards and fifty feet in the air at 2200fps. Look for my empty brass on the neighbors' roof a half mile away. Now, I use an AR that politely deposits brass in a nice neat little pile six feet to the right.
I have Rossi 92s in .357 and .44. I think they are really missing the boat not chambering a 92 in .327 FM. It's a natural fit.
Hey George, as always I enjoyed this video. I have 2 Rossi 92s. One in 44 mag and 1 in 357. My 357 is a 16" big loop carbine. Like you I've had issues with "short" 38 rounds in it. So now I load the 158gr Acme Lipstick or a 173gr cast HP. You'll probably notice a similar issue if you load longer boolits in the 357 case. Mine just will not cycle 180gr boolits or even the 173gr.
I don't know how much you've used those Acme Lipsticks but they are great!!! I have loads for them in about everything I load for.

Thanks for your comment! I've used the Acme round nose flat point bullets in 44 mag as well as 4570 and they have performed fairly well and some guns. The 158 grain semi wadcutter from Acme had no issues whatsoever in this Rossi 92. And they're really cheap!
In my experience all model 92's and their clones are picky about overall length and feeding. Free advice do not try a Keith style, real Keith style not the bogus claim ones, in a Winchester 92. What a jam I had getting that cleared.
Just today I wanted to shoot my 357 Rossi with 357 ammo loaded with a NOE 183 grain bullet I cast. It would not feed it was to long even crimped in the top crimp groove. So I experimented and seated it deeper up to the point where the bullet nose begins to taper. Feeds slick as a greasy minnow. I will just reduce my powder charge to compensate for deeper seating and it will all be good. No it will no push back in the case seated outside the crimp groove neck tension and a slight crimp more than take care of that.

I just bought this same rifle a few hours ago. I haven't fired it yet. After seeing your experiences with it, I loaded it with 5 rounds of 38 special 158gr Berry's bullets that I reloaded and tried to replicate the issues that you've been having. It appears to cycle fine for me. I hope it goes well when I get out and shoot it.

Well, my new Rossi 92 is doing the same thing using the RNFP 125 grain Mo Bullet Co. It cost me some seconds and misses in the CAS match. The bullet ejected instead of loading and I did not see it happen and found the bullet on the shelf. On the second time, I saw the bullet fall out and was able to load another round but it messed up my timing. I plan to go back to the .357 round for the length. I can try some 158 gr as I have lots of those. Sadly, Berry's plated bullets are not allowed in CAS. Boomstick Arms in Texas worked on my gun and the trigger pull is a very slick consistent 2 pounds.
I believe the Remington UMC green/white box 38 spl 130gr fmj, was loaded long, I ran a couple box through my chiappa 357 when I first got it with no feed issues. Great shooting as always, that Rossi trigger is very nice! Rossi is a very versatile rifle in other calibers also I find, I own a Rossi 45 colt 24 in octagon barrel and it will feed long Ruger length cartridges (likely due to that action used with their 454 Casull cartidge perhaps)which allows me a wide range of bullet shapes and weights with some extra powder room if I wish. Looking forward to more great video's!

I too had issues feeding 38 specials in my Rossi R92 (stainless). I have to make sure that the OAL is 1.525" or better. My live rounds if less would get stuck in the receiver which required me to take the receiver apart to get the round out. It was a challenge to do this and would require me to leave the field and take the carbine home to do the work. It was very, very frustrating. After getting the OAL figured out, it hasn't occurred again. I truly love this carbine once figured out. Frustration beyond belief until then. Now I love this gun. It is light and very manuervable. I think I like it better than my Henry's which are pretty heavy.
I'm with you. Having longer ammo is not a sacrifice. And the Rossi really is light and handy.

The funny thing is while both calibers are accurate. The 357 just runs smooth while the 38 are a little rough cycling. I don't know why but I don't want to wait for a problem. Good info thanks

@@TargetSuite I purchased the Henry about 6 months before Covid. I saw you with your lever rifles in pistol calibers. So it's your fault. But I'm really happy with it LOL. That's something I never would have got for myself ordinarily. I have a good deal of milsurp firearms from the early eighties when they were cheap and in great condition. I got them as a young soldier. I retired after thirty years in 2010 a Sergeant Major 15 years in the Ranger Regiment. I only had my Marlin 444 as my only real deer gun. I could have used a Mauser or M1903 . I have modern rifles and shotguns too. That's why I like your channel it's all new to me.
@@TargetSuite - If you get an older Henry without side gate loading or a newer one with it, either way you can unload it by removing the magazine tube from the front. Having to work the live rounds through the action could be dangerous. Is money more important to you than safety?
i have an older 92. I have shot 38 and 357 new and reloads never with a problem. A comparison with the two bullets is sort of fun. By loading a mag round and then a 38 and shooting, the difference is astounding. Great rifle, reliable and accurate.

I cast a round nose flat point (RNFP) 158 gr., similar to your Montana Bullet Works, but a little lighter. A very "bullet-y" looking bullet. I also cast a 158 gr. Keith SWC for .38/.357 cartridges. When seated out in .38 cases they both work fine in my Model 1892 Winchester converted to .357. The SWC is a little less "smooth" in operation as the sharp shoulder seems to catch just a little, but if I cycle the rifle briskly, no issues. But yes, the cartridges need to be a longer OAL to work well.

Yes that is a Boyt case. Between my son and me we have six just like that. But we have different colors :-) As for the shooting stick I was desperate. I knew I was a little wobbly today and I had put out those 12 oz cans of Diet Pepsi. If I was going to hit any of them I needed help. And that was the only "stick" in the back of the side by side.

I got the 16". I had similar issues with some short .38s. Also...the action was a lot better after smoothing the bolt with a ceramic stone.

Great channel. No way you are not a gun Armorer sir. My favorites are a Marlin 1895 GBL 45-70 6+1, OR a Rossi 454 Casull that cycles🙏🏼? I am a shooter not a gunsmith is why Rossi scares me. Other than Bighorn Armory or others 5k + for a pistol round 454 no matter how cool is not worth it when 45-70 Marlin,Winchester, and Henry's exist 👍

Had mine out today. Loads were 357 mag with 160 gr Hornady silhouette bullet and Lil gun powder. I'd been shooting cast and needed to adjust my sights for the next lever gun match. After making the change I got a 2.5" @ 100 yds from the bench. I think you have figured out the issue with OAL being the problem. Good shooting for using a boat paddle for a rest.
That's pretty good accuracy out of your Rossi. I hope I can get loads worked up that would equal that kind of precision.
i've had some similar problems with my second hand rossi and agree with someone below who said to shim the right cartridge guide. it takes some trial and error. i used some self amalgamating tape so it was easier to re seat the guide when reinstalling. I also had an issue with double feeding into the lifter, sometimes one of them would actually get behind the lifter making it a pain to clear. In that instance it was the left guide with the tube stop spring that needed pushed out slightly.mine also tends to occasionally nose dive into the top of the chamber, not sure why but may be the lifter angle not being correct and not sure what to do to fix it. another one to watch after extended firing is the knurled pin that connects the bolt to the lever, just tap it in from the left every now and then, it can come loose and cause the lever and bolt to not cycle at all stuck half way, again this is a bit of a pain to solve and requires almost complete disassembly. they can be finicky things but learning how they operate really makes you appreciate the design and they have to be the most fun guns out there. also recommend a reduced power extractor spring, makes it a lot smoother for that last bit of travel, although installing it can be an exercise in extreme patience.

Amen! There have been several suggestions on putting a spacer underneath the right side cartridge guide rail. Supposedly that solves the problem with the light bullets. I may try that down the road once I get several more hundred rounds through the gun. By the way I always appreciate your comments. @@larrymiller5171 I’ve had Rossi 92 in 44 magnum years but I’ve never tried any 44 special through it, since I reload I don’t see what the point is since I don’t have any other 44 specials,I would just load them lighter or load them hotter, however I do have a38 special revolver and so if I got one and 357 I would probably also want to be able to 38 specials, i’ll probably get a Winchester 73
I also have one in 45 colt it’s super reliable, I think the Rosti is a nice gun for the money
Mine shoots 38 special with no issues. I even put 357 and 38 special in the magazine together and all shot well with no issues. .

I reckon Henrys might be more reliable outta the box, but at substantially higher prices. I took the plunge today and ordered an R92 357/38 20” stainless cause they popped up for the first time Ive seen in over a year at pre-covid price ( $635 kygunco ) Im willing to work thru small issues and hope I get ‘ a good one’ . Stevesguns and brownells spring kits look to have some good value.

Great to have you! And yes, you seem to have gotten the big picture about the Rossi. But I'd like to get more feedback on the latest generation of Rossi's. My suspicion is that they are substantially better than what has driven all of the negative comments.
@OscarDad - how did you end up liking your Rossi R92?
I found with mine that commercial rounds from Magtech 38sp 158 grn LRN worked great, but it had trouble with Federal 38sp 158 grn LRN. And the only noticeable difference was that the Federal was a more streamlined bullet than the Magtech. Anything shorter than either of those constantly double ejected or stood straight up in the receiver. I don't reload myself so I have to buy or send out for reload, so your information on what to specify when getting reloads it very helpful. I have run 357 cowboy loads (I shoot Cowboy Action Shooting) and they seem to work okay, but are more expensive then 38 sp. I had so much trouble that I finally sent it back to Rossi and they actually found that my brand new rifle had a bent frame. I am waiting for the replacement to arrive and I will use your information to check out the ammo.
My little 92 eats anything I feed it.. I can truthly say not once has she had a feeding or extracting issues...from what I can get from different videos & reading the comments seems people talk about built up of gun powder to which I say CLEAN YOUR RIFLE...The cleaner the rifle is the better it will perform....great video keep up the good work...

Bought my son the same gun for his 18th bday. It’s runs everything but it’s much smoother action with 357. Fun little gun to shoot. Feel like a cowboy in the old west with a lever action.

Too much Magizine spring maybe ? I hear overpressure from the extra length may cause issues. Rossi had a bit of a reputation of putting 20 inch springs in the 16 inch barrel carbine, and the 24's in the 20's..a bit of overpower.

I've been doing Cowboy Action for about 7 years, and consider the Rossi to be a starter rifle because it is not reliable under competition demands, but it is comparably inexpensive. Uberti 1873 rifles in 357 must have a 38spl loaded to a certain minimum OAL, or the rounds won't feed and jam. Looks like Rossi rifles have the same issue.
So I had the same issue, and I an using 170 grain round nose in 38 special at 38.7 mm, the same bullet length of Riffle PPU factory .38 special, and they work alright now mate.
Steves Gunz offers a sweet peep sight that replaces the saftey lever on the bolt and places it near eye correctly

I have an older Inter-arms pre-safety 357mag m92. I skip the feeding issue by loading my 38spl loads in 357mag brass. I am currently using the Badman 157grn RNFP polymer coated bullet with a dose of 3N37 powder 😊 lm loading some right now.

My large loop lever action Rossi has performed flawlessly in both calibers since I bought it in 2014. I have put at least 5000 rounds through it. The guys at the range lov the "Rifleman" look of the gun too!

George, I haven't had this problem with my Rossi, but I know how to deal with it if it pops up. I mostly use .357 bass in my rifle. My trigger isn't nearly as nice. Thanks for the fine video!---TPf

My r92 has the puma crest on the left side near the saddle ring. Feeds anything even the rat shot 357 with square tips and shorter semi wad cutter 38 special and man it's very accurate
Never seemed to have a problem with my Winchester 73 even mixing 38 and .357 in the tube at the same time. It seems to function as fast as I can physically cycle the action.
No issues with both factory ammo and reloads. Using a 158 gr lump for both and the action cycles smooth.
Wonder what the diff is between Rossi and Winchester (Miroukuo now) as far as feeding rounds goes. Interesting...

I know this is old but i just recently saw where a gunsmith was talking about this issue and the fix was something to do with the magazine spring
I have a Rossi short rifle with the same issue. Also the extensive use of 38 cases will cause a ring of fowling and lead build up in the chamber forward of the case mouth which could interfere with the chambering of mag cases I use mag cases for all loads in my lever actions and all other mag chambered firearms. Yep. Cleaning becomes extra critical when you use 38 length ammo. I may use my borescope to demo that.
When I was a kid, I was taught to never use .22 Shorts in a Long Rifle chamber. Because of that, I NEVER use shorter cases in .357 Mag or .44 Mag chambers. Handloading is the answer, with the correct cases for the gun's chamber.

I've had one of this caliber in Brazil for over 30 years, it's never had any problems, it's very accurate. This carbine is a true masterpiece. Problems happen with inadequate ammunition, this even happens with Glock pistols.

I had major cycling issues with my Rossi 92 in 454 Casull, I worked on the carrier and the outer edge of the chamber. I was using a normal round nose bullet, the carrier was bringing the cartridge up on too steep of an angle, jamming the nose of the bullet on the front of the chamber, I also worked on the loading gate, a real finger biter. I learned you need to cycle these guns with some force, until they wear in some.
I'm hoping Rossi is changing things so that there doesn't have to be so much "working in". This gun seems to indicate that they're headed in the right direction. By the way, how do you like that Rossi in 454 Casull? It's definitely on my list of guns to get.
@@TargetSuite Since It’s working now, I like it, I killed a nice 8 point buck with it 2 years ago, dropped him in his tracks. I bought a new savage axisII in 6.5 creedmoor and bought a Boyd’s laminated wood stock for it, that’s my deer gun now. I’ve also got a Thompson Center Pro Hunter in 460S&W magnum, that I’ve killed 2 8 points with so far. The 460 is legal anywhere here in Indiana, while the 6.5 is only legal on private ground.

There is a valid argument for the economy of a 125 gr cast bullet. You might try loading that same short /125 gr bullet in 357 magnum cases to get a bit of extra overall length. Usually all that is needed ( beyond a die adjustment) is to add a couple of tenths to your 38 spl powder charge. My bet is that those would cycle great. The longer length /shorter jump to the rifling should make for better accuracy too.
These are gr8 rifles. I lov the 357 /38sp . Mine has did gr8 on cycling both. Its only real issue is the loading can be tricky.
After relieving the sharp edges on and around the loading gate its been way better. I works best with pc keith style or jacketed bullets.
The more I load the slicker it gets .

Yep, I have issues with rossi too. I have the ranch hand 38/357 and it has always had feeding issues with. 38spl. Keeps jamming the nose into the top of the chamber, yet 357 always seems to function just fine.

My first Rossi.357 mag absolutely didn't like light bullets. It would drive tacks with almost any 158 grain plus round, but you couldn't keep any 125 grain on the paper. Never found a light bullet it like.

I’ve always had problems with shorter 38’s feeding in my Rossi’s.
Thanks for sharing. I think that is a common experience for a lot of folks and nothing unusual.
Be careful with the Barry's bullets in the 92. Since they have no cannelure, you got to make sure you have enough crimp on them to make sure they don't compress in to the case when under the spring tension of the tube magazine. At the same time you can't make the crimp so hard that it cuts in to the thin copper plating and makes it separate from the lead. It can be done and they shoot very accurately. You just got to make sure you dial it in properly when loading them.
Wow George. Thats an interesting phenomenon you have going there. Seems the cartridge is just the right length and weight to allow if to flip up out of the guides.
Yes that's odd. Seems fairly common and there does seem to be a fix for that. I'll investigate after I get a lot more rounds through the Rossi.
I had one of those. Never had any issues with it though my bud's .44 certainly had problems with short .44 special loads. I didn't shoot that gun or its companion revolver that much before I decided that PCC's were of quite limited utility. Not junk, and I still have some 9mm PCC's but not much more than a toy.
Your double ejection problem is why I prefer Marlins. In the Marlins, the carrier doesn't start lifting the new cartridge until the fired cartridge is ejected and the lever starts moving back.
I'm a fan of Marlins too. And once they get back into production I hope to have a new one. As it stands right now I have four. And I love them all

Hey brother, it’s not just yours. I’m having the same issues. About lost my religion because of it. I did come to the same conclusion as you though. The older 92’s from Rossi worked fine with both. Shame it won’t use the little 125gr lightning though, it’s a nice little economical bullet. Sorry about your issues with yours, but glad it wasn’t just me. Lol

I have a Rossi 92 in .357 and mine loves 125gr bayou bullets. I've shot that load out to 200 yards at steel targets plenty of times with great success.

I have a Henry BBS carbine. It states in the manual it has to be 158 grains and similar overall length to a .357 Magnum.
I tried a box of .357 Hornady leverevolution at 140 grains. And it struggles to reload it. So I'm sticking with 158 grain wadcutters. Those cycle and shoot totally fine.
As long as the 38 Special has an O.A.L. of 1.50-1.55", there should be no feeding problems
1.5" turned out to be the magic number. So I have to concur 100%.

If you can hang on for a month or so I plan to do that full review after a thousand rounds or more. I think that would be a realistic review. Especially for an import. I really like the Rossi, but it is, after all, a product of Brazil. Great people but Rossi has struggled with quality in the past

I just saw this video now. I know it's a bit late, but you know how some resizing/decapping die tends to resize the brass way too narrow so it will cycle in all other firearms? Next time use the fire formed brass from that carbine and decap only with no resizing. This will leave the diameter of the brass large enough to be caught by the lip inside the receiver. Hope that works!!!
I love lever guns and own 2 of them.
One a Savage 99 in 300 Savage and the other a Winchester in 30-30. both are pre 64 models.
As much as I would love to own more lever guns, I can't justify it.
My answer was to make reduced loads rather than buy pistol cartridge rifles.
I now can shoot my lever guns with a lot less recoil and at a price point that makes it easy to go out and do some plinking.
Only problem that I've had with mine is Me short stroking the lever just slightly. The Keith style semiwadcutters are usually great for accuracy. The Rossis are dependable & lots of fun especially with a Blackhawk to go with it

Its amazing to me how varied opinions are on Rossi levers. Some live ‘em, others nothing but problems. Im rolling the dice and trying one.
Hy-tek is an excellent bullet coat. It's especially good for places and people who won't shoot semi/full metal ammo, but it isn't just bare lead for those (me) who don't like that.
I've loaded polymer bullets in 2 calibers 41 mag and 450 bushmaster. The info i found says you can push them up to 2000 fps.
I have a r92 and never had any problems with 38 or 357 cycling in my rifles. Even my hand loads are good.
I can't speak for this Rossi, but I've had two of their .22 pump guns. The first was incredibly inaccurate. It took some time, but as it turned out, the rifling petered out about 8 inches from the muzzle. Yep, it turned into a smoothbore. So I unloaded that one. A few years later, I bought another one, thinking that they must have improved by then. That one turned out to be bigger piece of junk than the first one! It jammed constantly. Nearly every sort of jam you can get, that rifle got, no matter what I did. So I unloaded that one too! I have heard that Taurus has since acquired Rossi. I'll wait a spell before I get another one, but in the meantime, no more Rossi stuff for me!
I own 3 , and the only problem I ever had was with gold dot ammo cycling .so I just don't put gold dot in them, and they work just fine
