  • Various tips for new Rossi carbine owners. (The "mystery wood" used for the stock is mahogany.) IMPORTANT: Rossi M92 parts are NOT always individually sold. After 1200 rounds the ejector broke, a small part, but they would only sell me the entire bolt assembly for $125 instead of a $15 ejector. Rossi parts are shipped from Brazil as units and sometime individual parts. Go Figure!

    The Rossi tends to need some tweaking, but once you work it over a bit, smooth as silk. I have the 92 in 357 mag, 16 inch version. One of my favorite lever guns.

    I bought a Model 92 in stainless in the '90s. Fit and finish were excellent, and I hand checkered the fore end and butt stock. Accuracy was excellent, and I never had any feeding problems. One of the best rifles i ever owned, now in one of my sons collections.

    I haven't had to do anything but clean and oil my Rossi 92 .357. My guess is that the negative reviews are likely due to a lemon. I have nothing but good things to say about mine. Feeds all 38 or 357 with no problem. Switched out the buckhorn sight for a bullseye and I love it. To each their own, but I'll keep my Rossi 92.

      So I'm watching this 7 years after this comment.....but I bought 2 Rossi's a year ago....both 16 inch carbines....one in 44 mag one in 357. Mag.l. Bought at different gun stores about 2 weeks apart from eachother....the 357 mag went back to rossi the day I bought it and has still ben a on going project ever since to get it smoothed up.in the loading gate......it' was a bitch to load when infirst got it sucked just as bad when i got it back from rossi.......after some tinkering and about 1000 rnds thru it is is smoothed up quite a bit becoming easier to load.......the 44 mag has ben a dream loads easy and cycles smooth as butter....so I believe itsna total 50/50 crap shoot when buying one

    I have the 16 inch carbine in .44 Magnum. Not one jam! It loves Winchester White Label 240 gr SP and will shoot 1 inch groups at 50 yards (but that is because I replaced the rear sight with a Marbles folding sight and put in a brass bead front sight. Real good alignment of the sights.) Working now on a rear peep sight that fits the safety hole from Steve's. His kind of fits loose and I hope to use brass tubing to make it fit tight. Then sight in the ghost ring at 25 yards. I have a stainless saddle ring on it to for 'tactical' carry (like a one point sling on an AR.) All in all, it is well worth the price they ask for the gun.

  • @USN1985dos
    @USN1985dos 3 роки тому

    I bought one of these today, and realize it's going to be a project. All of my other rifles are AR's, though, so I like the idea of having the chance to personalize and "break-in" an old-school carbine like this. Fortunately the starting price is low enough that I don't mind putting in some extra money and time doing so.

    I used to own a Rossi Puma model .357 mag. rifle. It's the same as this rifle based upon the Win. model 92. The only maintenance it required over its lifetime other than cleaning was the replacement of a broken extractor. I never ever fired a .38 special round through it. I drove a 4x4 all the time and carried that rifle as my truck gun. I load for .357 a lot and I never had any problems wracking a round. I did notice you didn't know how to hold the rifle when you loaded it. Move your left hand rearward on the rifle until you can use one finger to hold the round you place in the loading gate.

    You mentioned some of the issues I had with the finishing of the gun. LOTS of sharp edges that needed to be smoothed down. And I had a enough issues with the gun jamming or launching live ammo straight up in the air when cycling, or standing up straight at attention in the receiver I sent it back to Rossi for warranty work. It turned out it had a bent frame. They are sending me a replacement. Hopefully I wont have to go through all the same finishing work smoothing down sharp edges. The underside of the bolt was practically razor sharp and sliced the top of my hand at the thumb open if I wasn't careful. A gunsmith friend helped me smooth the edges, now I know what to do myself if the new one has the same issues.

      +Mick Moriarty Hi Mick, I agree. I put a few .357 reloads thru mine yesterday and can't believe it is so accurate. I fine tuned an AK to extreme accuracy with a red dot scope and I think this little lever gun is almost as accurate with iron sights. Love it and always get interest at the range. Some of the real young shooters enjoy using the cowboy lever action for the first time. Regarding the sights, I trimmed mine down to a notch sight and like it much more. Also I lightened the trigger a bit with a piece of aluminum from a Coke can. Makes a real difference. Good shooting! Rick

(I have been trick shooting since I was 5).. only thing I didn't like - was it RUSTED... I reblued it- and it rusted again.. sold it. Now I can't get another one... no one has one any more. Guess I'll go to Winchester now for a new one. BUT I loved that rifle- people said- It's no good-- was for me-- loved it!! OH- it rusted while in locked case traveling from California to Virginia--- and I made that drive in TWO days... and yes it was oiled, cleaned- properly maintained and locked for interstate travel legally!! I opened it as soon as I got back here in VA. and there the rust was. Oh well- that was the only one of many that ever did that..

      Hello David, sorry to hear that it rusted easily cause I'm trying to buy one, a blued or stainless. I reload .45 colt for my revolvers, so I enjoy the big boom! Rick

      @@skycamproductions I loved it-- and I think that one maybe had some FAULTY material or something-- I've had lots of rossie/taurus and such and NEVEr had a problem... maybe the salt air around the bay there.. who knows-- but woldn't hesitate in buying a new one if I can find it.. problem is- getting it modified-- since they are out of production. Winchester comes with the large loop already installed, so i only need the "set screw" for the trigger and some "aging".. but I would love .45 again. I'm just concerned about ammo now with the way things are..

    Yeah I have a 92 with 16" barrel. Tiny little thing. Ran smooth but it had a broken ejector. Replaced the ejector but it had to be thinned out with a dremel to reduce the spring tension so that the action would close. Now it's smooth again and the shells don't hit me in the face.

    Great video. Had one of these in 44, still kick my self for letting it go. Perhaps a 357 version will find its way into my safe some day.

    As you have discovered Sir, the best thing you can do to improve the shooting of a Rossi '92 is to shoot it a lot. Wears in the gun parts and hones the shooter simultaneously!

    Quality control must have gone way down over the years, cause theRossi M92 that I bought when the model was first introduced has none of these issues. It was near perfect right out of the box and is still one of my favorite firearms.

      Rip Aycock No complaints with mine either, which I got in 2018. Right out of the box, 1&3/4--2&1/4 inch groups at 50yds, about 3-4inches at 100yds with its buckhorn sights& leaning across my pickup hood, shooting 124-158gr FMJ & JHP. I believe I'll keep it.

    I have a new Rossi 92 blued 20” barrel, the .357 feeding issues is a common in Taurus made models, mine is a CBC made and feeds any brand of 357 cartridges perfectly without issues, my old Taurus Rossi didn’t workout with Fiocchi and Winchester ammunition at all

    I have one. The only issue I have found is it throws the spent shells right on my neck if I don't tilt the gun. And while I haven't sent real 38 special through it, the snap caps I have for 38 special kind of just go flying out of the loading ramp before I can close the bolt

    Great video for all "92" enthusiasts; great "set of pipes" you must be a "radio guy" ... (edit) just read your comments about narrating documentaries; I was SURE I heard that voice before.

      +Richard Bryant Thanks Richard. I just placed on youtube; using the Lee Turret Reloader for .357 mag. rounds. Maybe it will be of use for those levering a lot of ammo thru their rifles. Rick

    thanks. I have a 92 in .44 coming. It's basically new and made in 2008 . I heard a little work might help the rifle. I'll see how I like it and might actually get the 357. I like the idea of these 2 cartridges in a rifle...but don't want to spend a ton on these firearms. 500 bucks is OK.

    I'm assuming the rounds you are shooting are all factory rounds. I've got a .357 for my son and I shoot mostly hand loads through it. I bought some fiocchi ammunition. They wouldn't cycle hardly at all and I noticed they didn't have a crimp on them. They were just seated into the casing and they would catch while being cycled into the chamber. Something to look at next time while at the range.

    No doubt these Rossi rifles need some tweaking. Not a huge task. Just take your time , and you will be amazed at how great a rifle they are.
    My version is the shorter 16" in 357.

    Just came from gun range. I have the 44mag and it kicks like a little mule. I shot a 308 and a 12 gauge shotgun also and the 44 kicks harder. I will look for butt stock pad or something for a more comfortable time at the range. I like the trigger it's like pulling on air just fine for me.

    • @martingarza3383
      @martingarza3383 Рік тому

      Same here. My 30-06 and 12 gauge kick far less harder. 44 still still my favorite with its 3Lb trigger.

      He monitored that he pulled out the magazine tube spring and shaved off 2 inches.. I have done this also and can verify that it makes the loading process much easier, as well as it allows me to fix one extra round into the tube while having no effect on reliability

      @huntercarney5525 8 років тому

      +spraynpray what barrel length did you get? Unless you got the full 22inch barrel, you should really consider shaving 1-2.5 inches of that magazine tube spring..

    • @spraynpray
      @spraynpray 7 років тому

      I have the 20" model. I cut off 4" of spring.
      Most internal surfaces had large amounts of flashing. One bit was half the size of a dime and was folded over.

      It still doesn't feed well, but it is far better than it was.
