What's The Deal With Apple's Titanium iPhone?

  • Each new generation of iPhone brought with it a new marketing gimmick. Apple promoted the iPhone X’s notch, the iPhone 11 Pro’s triple camera system, the iPhone 12 Pro’s flat edges, and the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island.
But this year, Apple took a different approach. Instead of promoting a feature or new design element, they chose to emphasize the iPhone 15 Pro’s material; titanium. Which many people have found confusing.

Greg, I appreciate your videos as always. But metallurgy is very complex. To begin with, titanium is not "toughter than metal. There are a lot of factors that must be taken into account. For example, I have dents on my titanium frame that look like what aluminum would show/beheve. Only weight is relevant, but in that case returning to aluminum only makes sense. This was a pure marketing move because titanium has been entering the mainstream in recent years.
      Thank you.

That’s how I feel, I have an Apple Watch ultra and an iPhone 14 pm, the titanium just feels and looks cheaper. I like how much of a brick my phone is, I saw the 15 pro in store and compared it next to my phone and… stainless steel will always be my favorite material. Johnathan Ive left Apple and here they go ruining his design philosophy… maybe these new Apple designers loved Wolverine too much growing up. Oh and… the black tint on the 14 is pretty impossible to just “scratch off” whereas my Apple Watch ultra does already have ugly scuffs all over the titanium parts 🫣 I really hope they regret the titanium and go back to steel for my next upgrade

I don’t recommend this for most people using a iPhone 13 Pro or newer, but I went from the 14 pro max to the 15 pro max specifically for the almost thunderbolt USB-C port. In my case I say it was worth it as I’ve been using it almost everyday since buying it to offload files quickly into Final Cut Pro on my Mac. Not to mention while filming videos I can use an external microphone easily, along with a thunderbolt hub to keep my iPhone charged, have the microphone connected, and if I choose to record directly to a external hard drive all at once. If you do that use a external battery pack to keep your phone charged or your microphone will pickup the noise in AC current

Titanium doesn’t show fingerprints? I have had the iPhone 15 Pro for a week now and see more fingerprints on the edges than any of the previous models. It also has a less durable screen, (I assume so that the device looks older faster, hence you keep upgrading), and has about 20 scratches all over it. Additionally, the titanium sucks for grip, and I have almost dropped this phone on multiple occasions. Really the only selling point of this phone is the fact that it can shoot in ProRAW, and 95% of people don’t even know what that means. For the 5% of us that do shoot video, a mirrorless camera does a much better job shooting in raw and the color science of a camera like the Sony FX3 is vastly superior. And don’t get me started on them emphasizing the USB-C port as a “feature”. They changed it because they had to, plain and simple. Apple doesn’t give a damn about their customer base and will do anything to milk them for every last cent. The iPhone 15 is one of the biggest tech flops of the 21st century and this spiteful behavior, by Apple, will inevitably be their demise.

Apple couldn't give use a sapphire screen...
2:00 Titanium on a phone with glass panels front and back and scratches easily on anodized colored surfaces. (Around the charge port)
Well, It won't bend much but that doesn't matter if the glass breaks.
Titatinum has less heat transfer so the phones get warmer while charging or in use.
Weight..your're not really going to notice the difference unless you hold the two phones side by side.
Titanium is mostly not maganetic making recycling difficult and will likely end up in a landfill.
Titanium is better used for aerospace and medical parts...not phones.

The materials have always been a selling point for practically every single iPhone and key aspects of their keynotes, you're definitely wrong on that one. Very wrong. Even their 2G/3G generations highlighted the polycarbonate as being very strong, the 4's with their glass, then the thin aluminum "aircraft" grade. Then the "surgical" grade stainless steel. Etc, how the glass seamlessly smoothed from the perimeter of the iPhone X. Each and every single iPhone had it's materials as a key selling point and differentiating feature.

I think there a some wrong informations in this video:
First: If you see fingerprints or not, depends mainly on the last surface treatment of the frame metal. Titanium and Aluminium are both anodized to harden the surface, also the new macbook is featured with less fingerprints and these are made of aluminum.
Second: There is quite no good technical reason why they go for titanium. This material makes no sense. If you want low weight, you go for aluminum. Also in the industry there are very rare scenarios where you choose titanium based on the characteristics, eg. turbine blade, due to titaniums specific tear length!
The only real reason why to choose this nonsens will be the next iphone generation to fit in a pattern, but we will see.

@MaxMustermann-vy7ur I were using fl studio mobile for 2 years on my a32 4g , a 200€ phone and it never crashed , iphone lacks apps too , like poweramp wich is the best music player in the smartphone world.. audiophiles like me love it, games on iphone don't crash? Dude if you stream or screen record asphalt 9 on your iphone it will crash due to heat because of its bad heat management because it doesn't have cooling system.
As for your fold 3 it was still the beginning, many apps aren't optimised for foldable android version, it's still a new thing without many users so 3rd party app devs don't care so much.
All os have some bugs from time to time , ios 16 was a disaster but yeah let's talk about only your fold 3 but iphone is always the exception huh? , had you even take a look at reddit screenshots and screen recordings of iphone bugs? There's So many of them , especially when new os version launches , and it's OK it happens to all brands. Just Don't be biased.
