Why Apple Ended iPhone ’S’ Models
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 тра 2023
- If you’ve been an iPhone user for a while, you may’ve noticed that Apple ended the iPhone ’S’ naming scheme that had been used for over a decade. And the reason has to do with the iPhone’s new update cycle.
Previously, Apple released a major update to iPhone every two years, with a minor update in-between. Like the 3G featuring a completely new design, and the 3GS featuring a speed bump and lower price. Or the 4 having a radical new design, and the 4S simply including a new software feature called Siri.
The S naming scheme worked well back then, but things got a little messy after the 6S was released. - Наука та технологія
Back then the "s" upgrades were bigger than the number upgrades we get now

the 5S & 6S were no joke. definitely were better than their superiors and i’ve owned those phones too and could feel the amount of changes even though nothing physically was changed.
The 5S was awesome, definitely one of the best.
The 4s too. The 4s phones lasted considerably longer than the 4.
I feel as though the iPhone 8, Pros and Pro Maxes are spiritual successors to the S Models. I'm going to miss the S Models of these devices which got me hook into the iPhone ecosystem.
especially now that the iphone 14 pro has an a16 while the normal 14 has an a15
I got hooked into iPhones after my 6s.
i think the Pro iPhones are the successors to the standard versions whereas the regular versions are successors to the cheaper, less powerful versions; e.g. the 8 is followed by the xr followed by the 11 followed by the 12 and the X followed by the xs followed by the 11 pro and so on
The pro series are actually the S series
iPhone 14 and 14 plus were basically an iPhone 13s where no more major changes and same chipset
The reason why Apple upgraded phones every two years instead of every year is because back then most iPhones were sold with a two year contract at a telephone provider
Actually, apple has released a new model each year since the iPhone 1. Every single one has some upgrade.

I still find it amusing how both the iPhone and Windows went from 8 to 10 skipping the 9.
Meanwhile Samsung jumped from Galaxy S10 to S20 lol
Samsung switching from S10 to S20 was them setting the model number to match the year.
While it's not the worst reason to do a model number jump, it does raise the question why haven't they done the same kind of numbering to any other tech products?
iPhone use the number 10 because 2017 was the 10 year anniversary of the iPhone. Windows skipped 9 because they thought would be confusing since they had windows 98 and 95.
Seven really ate nine
Seven of Nine is a ten! Now when will Mario Kart 9 ever come out, or will they skip 9 too?
I actually thought that iPhone XR could be named as iPhone 9. However it had a newer chipset than iPhone X so it's kinda contradicting.
Am I the only one thinking the 7 was an actual desing change over the 6S so the naming was fine, but the 8 should have been the 7S instead?
iPhone 8 feels nothing like iPhone 7S.
I think that iPhone 8 has different design.. 6 nor 7 don't have glass bck, right?
@@bboypanda7776 yeah but the 7 plus was the first dual camera phone in in iPhone it also has the iconic jet black finish , and yes the 8 got glass back which others didn’t and had aluminium
iPhone 6s Plus is the first phone to have dual cameras, not the 7
@@WololoWololo2 You are WRONG. iPhone 7+ is the first iPhone to have dual lens camera system on back of iPhone.
Instead of discerning between minor and major innovations with the (s), Apple is now pushing every phone out with a minor upgrade but advertising it as a major upgrade by increasing the number every year.
They can't really change the design by much tbf
They don’t change the design anymore as people now recognize it. It’d be stupid to make a whole new design and people not recognizing it, because recognition and status is a great way of brand building. It’s the entire reason it’s seen as some sort of status thing.
Only poor and middle class needs an iphone as status.rich people don't really care that much.
@@MoonieLovegoodThey never had a design problem before 🤷🏼♂️ Everyone always new which iPhone was the new iPhone. Nowadays, nobody really knows outside of a new color or a bigger camera bump. If anything, I think this whole “keep the same design” thing is only going to hurt the iPhone in the long run as it will only tie the Apple brand down to a single design and make it difficult to move away from it. That, but it also removes the status symbol from it. When’s the last time you’ve heard someone say “is that the new iPhone?” or “I want the new one so bad?” Not recently. People used to get excited when they saw the new iPhone and wanted to get it. Now I don’t see any of my friends upgrading.
@@maheshpun4804There's not huge changes, but there were redesigns between 11 and 13 (larger device, smaller bezels, smaller notch, squared-off edges, stainless steel, matte glass), and between 13 and 15 (dynamic island, smaller bezels, rounded edges, action button, titanium) that would be more obvious if the 12 and 14 were the same as their previous generations except with an updated SoC

It was because it was released 10 years to the day of the original iPhone. It was an important milestone and so they skipped 9 and went straight to 10 to match the 10 year anniversary
And the "important milestone" factor is why I got one despite my 6 still working completely fine back then. A nice collection piece to add into the rest while upgrading.
Other than needing a new battery the X still lives unscratched in today while I got a 13 Pro for "three cameras" and escaping 64GB hell

Things don't do by magic. Although technology advances a lot, it is very difficult to bring new features and new styles every year, plus they must pay the R&D cost to be offering a new model every 12 months. Not everything depends on Apple or whatever company it is, remember that there is a manufacturing process, you have to make or modify machines, develop the new chip, design the parts distribution lines, etc. There is a complex process to be able to change things every year. So I suspect it's all part of the marketing. They take the “S” out of the equation and sell themselves to consumers as a company that innovates every year. And that's not bad, it's part of the marketing principles, everyone does it.
Well said
That's the real problem: 12 months. That's INSANE! World market gone crazy! I do prefer to wait a little bit longer and get a real new thing with real new advances. Just a thought

Hi Greg. Happy to see you keeping this channel alive!
After all the years, I still love the background music of your videos. Timeless.
Crazy cause the iPhone 14 is just an iPhone 13S if we're being realistic. It would've made a lot more sense if they stuck to that naming scheme cause consumers who like upgrading every year would probably skip the 14 entirely or opt for the pro version instead of the base version.
13 is almost a 12S if we don't factor the realignment of camera lenses.
Iphone 11pro 3xS 😂
The step from the 6 Plus to the 6S Plus was greater than the one from the 6S Plus to the 7 Plus and even smaller to the 8 Plus…so the naming didn’t make sense from the beginning 🤷🏻♂️
I use to only get the S models. Now I get the Pro but doesn’t feel the same as it use to back in the day.
That makes sense. The S means second generation for that iPhone model. I am looking forward to the iPhone 15 this year! I will hand my current iPhone 12 to either my mom or dad and my mom or dad will get an iPhone 13 or 14 while I get the 15. Apple explained video idea: why flagship iPhones since iPhone X are only made for 1 year
Since it was Apple's 10 year anniversary like the iPhone 2G probably wasn't high in demand at the time as well with the confusion in the marketing to have both the iPhone 8 and X released at the same time.
Likely to not cannibalize the sales of the newer phones. If someone goes for the pro model, they likely want the latest technology available. Including the nonpro models gives budget-minded consumers more choices, since those people likely won't care about having the latest and greatest but rather the best bang for the buck.
I had the 6s Plus and the 7 Plus and I never thought those ones looked exactly alike. I thought that was more an issue between the 7 and 8 hence why I didn’t get the 8 Plus because it wasn’t an upgrade to for me having the 7 plus. I miss the S model years though, it was like a improved version of the model year before.

iPhone 5S / iPhone SE 1st gen was the best iPhone to ever exist. The "S" models will be missed. It seemed like the "S" models would get updates for a very long time as well. In fact, the "S" model of iPhones is what got me into the ecosystem. But now, I don't see much innovation anymore. So I'm back to Samsung.
I agree. In fact, my very first apple phone was an iPhone SE 1st gen. It was amazing. I held up for years as well, lasting until the got a newer model, the iPhone 11

@@randomrazr I believe the last "S" series was the XS. Which of course, was a great phone too. I had the 512GB one. But I liked the 5s / SE the best. Tried the 12 and I didn't like it.
does Samsung have a lot of innovation between S20 → S23 in the highest series? or just the camera?
Loved the 3G and 3GS. Pretty sure the 4 was only available in black. There was no white iPhone 4 until the 4S came along and that was also black only at first, with the white option arriving a few months later.
The S iPhones are underrated and have a separate fan base
I went from 4 to 5 to 6s to X and then to the 12 which I'm still on. I only really upgrade when they change the design, the 16 will prob tempt me.
I won't say iPhone 8 had the same design of iPhone 6 or 7, the back is completely different being glass and not metal, with no antenna lines. Minor details maybe since you mostly hide them with a cover anyway, but definitely the 8 felt different than previous ones...
So, exactly the same except for 2 things..?
The design is the same. It’s just different material on one part.

I knew a lot of people who would upgrade their iPhones every two years, relying on these S models. Like they’d go for iPhone 4S, 5S, 6S, etc
Back then you could find serious speed differences between the 4s and the 5s. Now the 12 pro for example is completely usable on iOS 17
I think the numbers are getting needlessly high. I have a 12 and feel no urge to upgrade to the 14, not even the upcoming 15. Before being one generation behind would be a painful wait with a sensation of being a luddite. People forget how fast tech was moving in the 2000s/10s.
@@Jordan_Dossoulol that means something completely different though
@@Jordan_Dossou"the term has been used to refer to those opposed to industrialisation, automation, computerisation, or new technologies in general."
The iPhone X, Xs, and 11 follow the same pattern as the 6, 6s, and 7. First two generations have the same body and design, then on the third year, they keep the body but change the back, add colors, and add a camera. So if Apple is still using this cycle, the 15 might have its back design changed, but rumors suggest it will still be the dual and triple camera setup that we got starting with the 11. Apple might be on a 4 year cycle now. Change the chassis design on the 15 to prepare for the 16. The 15 will have a slightly rounded body but still boxy, then the 16 will have a back redesign. This is like what happened with the 11 but the other way around - keep the rounded body design but redesign the back to prepare for the boxy design for the 12.
I think the iPhone 16 Pro will get a more noticeable change/redesign , especially given the rumors of a slightly larger display for both the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max which may be necessary to accommodate the new body. Maybe the camera layout will look different as well.
Not to mention the Xr, which was a whole different beast again. Ideally, they should drop the numbers and refer to the year they’re released (iPhone 2023, iPhone Pro 2023, etc).
Would lose brand recognition
oh no.. god please no.. iPhone 12 is so simple.. the iPad and Mac lineups are terrible imo with “iPad Pro 2021 M1 11” or “Macbook Pro 2021 M1Pro 14”.. i think iPhone 14 Plus is much simpler than an iPhone Pro 2023 6,7”.. just stick with the numbers.. i get why the Mac lineup is this way, seeing pretty much every other laptop manufacturer do it this way but it gets so messy so quickly… especially with something like the Macbook Air 2020, Intel and the Macbook 2020, M1 or the different screen sizes of the macbook pro + the different chip configurations, its a mess.. just stick to the numbers^^
@@DecidiousGreens it wouldn’t lose brand recognition. If anything, it would strengthen it. This year, for example, you’d have iPhone 2023, iPhone Max 2023, iPhone Pro 2023 and iPhone Pro Max 2023. It’s no different than using the numbers, except it won’t be ridiculous when we get to iPhone 37, iPhone 38, etc.
@@Lily-D1215 no, it’s a much better solution. This year, for example, you’d have iPhone 2023, iPhone Max 2023, iPhone Pro 2023 and iPhone Pro Max 2023. How I've always thought about it: If the phone has significant enough physical changes that it can't use the same case as the model before it, it's getting a new number. Only exception would be 7 to 8, but it did go from metal to glass back so it still counts in my opinion.

I refer to the iPhone 6s as the iPhone Success. But I could never decide whether iPhone Xs should be referred to as iPhone Tennis or iPhone Excess.
I actually preferred this as it does slow down the design flow and repetition of the features as well. S models however does this and wouldn’t be a major update to iPhone, by the way I have actually owned an iPhone XS and it’s just like the normal X model
iPhone XS doesn't feel the same as iPhone X. iPhone X has A11 chip and iPhone XS has A12 chip. iPhone XS feels feels faster than iPhone X.
XS had more ram than x. Face Id is smoother and more reliable. The faster more efficient chip helps battery life. S cycle phones normally have the bugs and glitches ironed out. Just like the iPhone 6 with bend gate. The iPhone 6s fixed that issue.

In theory yes.
yeah that does sound ugly. I wish they migrate to some new naming convention beyond iPhone 16 or something. For iOS it's fair because that's how software is released incrementally with major and minor versions but certainly not a great scheme for iPhone models
It would hardly fit in your pocket by then, it's getting bigger again next year for the 16 lol
Tbf the iPhone 7 did more than people give it credit for, but most people remembers it only for the removal of the headphone jack
The iPhone 7 removed the physical home button for a pressure-based sensor, it improved the taptic engine in the 6S to allow better feedback, it was the first audio with stereo sound in landscape by using the earpiece as a second speaker, and it was the first iPhone with a combination of performance and efficiency cores
To be fair Apple is STILL following the update cycle they just make it less apparent, looking from the Xs the iPhone 11's were a major update, the iPhones 12's were a minor update, the iPhone 13's were a major update and the iPhone 14's were a minor update (especially the regular 14). And now the 15's will be a major one. Although the "S" naming scheme will most likely never come back.
I did notice that Apple stopped redesigning the iPhone (drastically) after the 6. I remember the first iphone, 3g, 4, 5, and 6 all looked drastically different. but the 6, 7, and 8 looked identical (with minor differences, like a slightly bigger camera or just a glass back for wireless charging). I thought Apple just got comfortable with their 6 design until the iPhone X.
S meant an update in name only. Now, iterations are never noticeable.

I think they stopped the S because before there use to be a bigger leap every two years, the design and software evolved more. Whereas now the changes are subtle that for example, a 12S would have looked identical to a 13.
