I think the whole point of not being able to rewind with Kate on the roof was to show that saying the wrong thing to people can have disastrous consequences, especially in this scenario. You have to be careful, you only have one shot. You can't ever take back what you said. It was a small detail but it was overall very effective.
+Sardonicus Also there's a letter that shows how much her father loves her, that works too; he was a bit unlucky, 50% chance here; but then again he also would have had to ace the Bible question later in order to save her, so that was unlikely to happen. The game gives a lot of interesting messages, that's what it saves it in my eyes against a lot of things that I couldn't gloss over.
That Kate Marsh thing is such a good use of this game’s mechanics, because you’re trained to expect ZERO short term consequences for your actions, if you fuck up you can just rewind and now you can’t. You have to pick the right answers and the only way to know what the right answers are is if you as the player (and by extension Max) made any effort to actually get to know Kate, especially given her obvious troubles. So the game wags its finger at the both of you and practically says “She killed herself because you didn’t care enough.”
I think the game more says she got suicidal cause of the video. Wording it like that makes it seem like it was all max fault but you can only do so much. Her and max are the same age so she can't depend on max to always keep her above water especially when max doesn't even know she's in the ocean. Like idk that's horrible wording and it puts so much blame on the wrong person
@@FailedNoName Max does know she’s in the ocean though. I didn’t say that the game calls Max and you responsible or that it’s all your fault, but how much you care and are able to show that you care is the final straw in Kate’s decision and she will call out every single time you chose not to be supportive of her. Saying Max didn’t know isn’t really true. And the reason I say “the both of you” is because you are playing as Max. There is no third person here, it’s entirely from her perspective and Max just feels guilty because she KNOWS she could have done more. In fact when Max goes back to the start and simply expresses support for Kate in the classroom, she never attempts suicide in that timeline. That’s why I attribute responsibility to Max and the player here because I do think that while “blame” is a strong word to use here (as if Max had committed a crime or something), we do have a responsibility to reach out to people we know are in distress, because here’s the kicker; They’re the ones who are the LEAST responsible. It’s not Kate’s fault that she felt these things and wanted to end it all, they aren’t responsible for the chemical whirlwind ravaging their minds and in the case of it being a result of public ostracism and bullying it’s on a whole different level. You can’t JUST wag your fingers at the bullies who caused it, you can’t just turn the other cheek and say “it’s out of my hands, can’t blame me, not my problem”, it is irresponsible not to, especially if you know the person, if you’re family or a close friend. We can’t blame the victims of suicide, so I ask this; If the people close to them can’t be held responsible, then what the hell do we do? Just curse the bullies and move on, hoping they never do it again? What about when there are no bullies? Looking away doesn’t solve the problem, it doesn’t save the next victim. But just showing that you care is such a simple thing and yet what the game tells you is that it is powerful.

One of my favorite parts of that confrontation was either the family choice in which you would know to pick her sisters based on a photo in her room, and ESPECIALLY the Bible verse choice in which you could pick between a verse from Matthew or Proverbs, and if you looked in her book she wrote both verses down on post it notes but she scribbled out the one from Proverbs, making it clear to pick Matthew for when the time came. Of course you could guess and get lucky, there aren't that many choices to choose from, but the game showed that if you wanted to make a conscious effort to save her, you have to do more than just talk to her and quickly move the plot forward. It kinda brings home the fact that the more you stay with someone, the more you get to know them.
@@absentzz347 Exactly, the game isn’t quizzing you, you’re not being rewarded for remembering something the game told you, the game rewards you for actually taking an ACTIVE interest in Kate (the right answers can only be found by searching through Kate’s room even when you weren’t being told by the game to do so). So the only real way to save Kate is for Kate to not only matter enough to you as a player for you to search her room and learn about her, but also matter to you enough for you to remember these things about her. As someone who has had the horrible experience of talking someone out of actively committing suicide, I hope you don't mind me sharing my thoughts. This game was very smart to take away your powers at that moment. It made the moment all too real. Each thing you said made a difference, and you can't take it back. Well done, developers. One of the other branches in that dialogue tree gives you the option to tell Kate that suicide is a sin. I imagine that is the absolute worst thing to say to a person about to kill themselves. The thing that worked in my situation was love. Show and tell the person that you love them. Show them times previous that you love them. It worked for me, and it is absolutely worth a shot. That was one of the scariest things I have had to watch in a video game, because it is the scariest thing I have had to do in real life. I hope none of you ever have to go through a situation like that in your lives. I am sure that prevention is more important and effective than talking someone down. Kate wouldn't have jumped if she wasn't bullied about the video. My friend wouldn't have had that belt wrapped around her neck if some of her classmates in middle school didn't relentlessly tease her. If there is one thing I have learned from this, it is that love conquers all. Of course, that's a platitude at this point, repeated so often it loses its meaning. But it is true. It works. Thank you, game designers. Fantastic job. I don't mean to be preachy, but that moment still weighs very heavily on my heart, and I want to share it with people. Thank you for your time.
I just got spoilers now... .-. I'll remember to not look into the comments lol. (Not your fault btw, it's been fucking years since the game was released)
Bro!!!!! When Jefferson gets defensive saying “Rachel Amber? What does she have to do with Kate?”, I got shivers. The bits of foreshowing and things you pick up on when rewatching a game is phenomenal. I love this subtle hint.
Your Average Dickhead Yes, thank you but what does Rachel have to do with Kate except that they were both victims of him (Kate was Nathan‘s but still) and how is it foreshadowing?
She saved Chloe's life three times, not two: 1) In the bathroom with Nathan 2) At the junkyard after the bullet reflected off the car bumper 3) On the train track
Technically a 4th and 5th time, a 4th time which ties into the bullet scene where she choose whether or not to let Chloe die, and a 5th time if you choose to not kill Chloe in the other universe where she is paralyzed.
thats what i was saying, bc they kept saying that max saved chloe twice and i was like no she saved chloe 3 times💀✋ lmaooo… i’m glad other people noticed besides me!!

I was able to save Kate, but I gave myself anxiety for like an hour because I spent like five minutes trying to make each decision. I felt so bad for Jack when she died
To save Kate, you need to get every question correct. If you get two wrong, she jumps. If you only get one, then she brings up a bible question, where you had to study her room and find the answer in the bible (Matthews). If you looked on her laptop, you would've seen her mother hates her. You also had to say to go straight to the police and also answer her call, which you did.
She jumped in mine and I felt so good damn bad about it AHH. If you save her, does she not scare the hell out of you at the end when max is circling around the dorms?
@@spawnofsailor7158 If you save her, when you go around the dorms you still meet her. I think she says something like "Why didn't you let me jump?" and something about "Now my mother and people at church won't leave me alone!" If you want to see it, go watch Yogscast Kim's play through because she manages to save Kate. I also think that in her play through you may discover more things about the game and the characters, because she takes time to look at everything and doesn't rush it.. I personally like Kim's play through more, but at the end she chose to sacrifice Chloe, and that killed me. I still like this play through a lot though, I just wish he'd take time to look at things.
@@pedrogoncalves3326 same i didn't have to do any of that, all i needed was to find the letter from her dad so you have proof that her dad cares about her and then she won't jump. jack just needed to be more observant and stop skipping over the smaller things in the environment
The jumping scene really got me. My friend committed suicide by jumping off her apartment building and for the rest of my life I'll have the "what ifs".
I'm so sorry for you. I'm suicidal and I have been for years. It's always "You're so young", "You're just a teenager", "You have it easy", "You teens think you have it hard". But people don't realize that so many teens do have it hard. Nobody should feel less important just because their problems aren't as bad as other people's. I'm getting help, and I hope everyone does. Nobody should have to suffer. You are ALL important and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Therion84 with that theory what should anyone any age have to be suicidal about? because after that age you should have your life figured out and be happy right?
Michael Ottmo Kate’s mom made her feel worse about herself, Jack didn’t know that because he didn’t look around in Kate’s room. That’s ok though he didn’t know he needed to look around.
Michael Ottmo it’s hard to explain, but if you want to see the other outcome and how the mother plays into it I suggest watching MatPat’s (GTLive) play through of this game! They saved Kate. If you only want to see everything with Kate, go to episode 5! I hope this helps 😁
every time you save chloe, it effects the future and shows you the vision again. that's why you keep getting visions. because your saving people when they should be dead
Yeah. Sometimes I get annoyed watching the let's plays and seeing that so many people didn't look at every detail in the room(not just Kate's room, in general). Or seeing that they different talk to everyone. But I guess that gives people a reason to replay it. The first time I played the game, I made sure to look at every detail and talk to everyone.

ramio1983 I played episode 1 and just got the money for episode two but haven’t played it yet, but when Kate was on the roof I was thinking that the father choice would be right!
Delirious Army For the mother one to still work i'm guessing you have to do everything to support her. Such as telling her to call the police instead of waiting and gathering evidence. It's like a stack type of thing i'm guessing. The more good or bad you do to her, or at least what she see's as bad, the more easier or harder it is to save her.
It’s really too bad that Jack didn’t do this playthrough years later when he started being more in depth. Like mentioning not wanting to read all the journal stuff last episode. I feel he would’ve done that and gone through more stuff. Such as seeing the pregnancy test in Dana’s room or searching Kate’s room to find out her sisters love her or her father still loves her. He’d be able to save her.

talking someone down from suicide is the most terrifying thing I can imagine. failure will cost a life, and its terrible. please. if you EVER find yourself in a situation where your words can determine whether someone lives or dies, show them as much as you can how much you love them.

+Nicolas Peralta it's the truth. This is Earth. If you knew someone close to you who was about to commit suicide, would you turn around and say, "No let's not talk about this?" This game seems to be a nightmare for UA-camrs to play. From the Let's Plays I've seen, UA-camrs seem to want to rush through the game because they don't want videos to be too long etc. when in fact the whole point of Life Is Strange and similar games is to take your time and pay attention to detail. If Jack had just taken a little more time to look through every room he wouldn't have missed half of the things he has already. Jack's playthrough has been very entertaining but it is things like this that make it just as frustrating to watch.
You have to enjoy it as it is. And Jack himself said that people might not watch these kinds of playthrough because it's slow-paced and long. I think it's not Jack's type of game either, so it's logical if he's a bit rushing.

Oh wow..I'm sorry you had to go through that. No one should have to talk someone else out of suicide. What you did was amazing though!

Watching mr Jefferson act all innocent but giving very slight clues to what he’s done in the early episodes is pretty cool.

Bro!!!!! When Jefferson gets defensive saying “Rachel Amber? What does she have to do with Kate?”, I got shivers. The bits of foreshowing and things you pick up on when rewatching a game is phenomenal. I love this subtle hint.
can you explain it to me pls?
Helene Jefferson is the guy that kidnapps the girls and takes them to the dark room, Rachel amber is one of them
Your Average Dickhead Yes, thank you but what does Rachel have to do with Kate except that they were both victims of him (Kate was Nathan‘s but still) and how is it foreshadowing?

She saved Chloe's life three times, not two:
1) In the bathroom with Nathan
2) At the junkyard after the bullet reflected off the car bumper
3) On the train track
Technically a 4th and 5th time, a 4th time which ties into the bullet scene where she choose whether or not to let Chloe die, and a 5th time if you choose to not kill Chloe in the other universe where she is paralyzed.
At the junkyard doesn’t really count because she caused it too (when she told her to shoot the bumper)

@@lexthedork4040 I cried, thank you for this

Lex ? ! The Dork oh for gods sake what does somebody your age have to be “suicidal” about
Therion84 with that theory what should anyone any age have to be suicidal about? because after that age you should have your life figured out and be happy right?
Jack says sorry so many times in this video, I am really glad he has gotten much more confident in himself and his work.
When Jack pressed 'Your Mother' I threw my glass of water across the room.
Are you the President of his fan club? NO, that would be you MOTHER
that indirectly caused kate to die... it's not really Jack's fault, he couldn't know the right choice to save Kate's life..
In my playthrough, I chose 'Your Mother,' but then I chose to recite one of her favorite scriptures to her, and that's ultimately what saved her.
every time you save chloe, it effects the future and shows you the vision again. that's why you keep getting visions. because your saving people when they should be dead
And one second
For the new players here -
If you look at everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - in Kate's room, it will make saving her so much easier!

Bro! I killed Kate too and there IS a way to save her. Her father/sisters are correct. Made me realize how important really listening was because there were many clues that her Mother was overpowering and controlling but we clearly dozed over that.

It sucks jack didn't say that....
Delirious Army For the mother one to still work i'm guessing you have to do everything to support her. Such as telling her to call the police instead of waiting and gathering evidence. It's like a stack type of thing i'm guessing. The more good or bad you do to her, or at least what she see's as bad, the more easier or harder it is to save her.

talking someone down from suicide is the most terrifying thing I can imagine. failure will cost a life, and its terrible. please. if you EVER find yourself in a situation where your words can determine whether someone lives or dies, show them as much as you can how much you love them.

+Nicolas Peralta it's the truth. This is Earth. If you knew someone close to you who was about to commit suicide, would you turn around and say, "No let's not talk about this?" This is serious talk that costs lives. A few words can mean 50+ more years for a person. I get that you don't want to talk about it, it is upsetting, but you have to face facts.

This game seems to be a nightmare for UA-camrs to play.
Megan Mason yes i agree with you omg i wish he took time to look into kate’s room and actually save her.. i’m honestly so annoyed
You have to enjoy it as it is. And Jack himself said that people might not watch these kinds of playthrough because it's slow-paced and long. I think it's not Jack's type of game either, so it's logical if he's a bit rushing.
