You're right hanging was a big occasion where people consumed large amounts of alcohol. The next day after the hanging was over they’d be suffering. That’s where the word “ Hangover “ comes from.
I’ve been watching your videos for over 4 years now and I love them. I’m a solo traveler when I come to Edinburgh and long for the day I come with someone else , to be able to impress them with my (your) knowledge would be brilliant 😀
Only just discoverd your UA-cam channel and loving the videos. I've lived in Edinburgh nearly 30 years, although originally from the Firth of Clyde. There's always something new and interesting in your work. Thank you! 👍
Yo! This is so cool man! I like to spend a bit of time in Edinburgh but I'm not too familiar with its history. This video is excellent, I can't wait to travel back and have a wee wander around Grassmarket!
We always love your videos and, seeing as we're staying in the Grassmarket in the near future, we've been reviewing any you've done that focus on it. Thanks for the information and interesting bits of history.
Thank you, Tony! I always enjoy your tours around Edinburgh and I learn something new every time. I saw things that I missed when I was there, so you know I'll be on the lookout for them next time!!!
In 2006 my wife proposed to me (yes, that way round and I said "yes"!) in Gennaro's Italian restaurant in the Grassmarket. Alas, that restaurant is no more but the area holds a special place in my heart ❤️
Thanks again Tony great info once again your correct about the hanging that was their entertainment then thank goodness we don't have that now, we have 0:43 TV and theatres/playhouses etc lol 👍
I had an antique shop at 11 Cowgatehead called Yesteryear just at the corner selling art deco in the 1980s also lived in the basement of the shop and had some great times and memories
In mid May this year they were filming the t.v. show Rebus in the Grassmarket. I know this because I was trying to find Greyfriars and walked through the set right up to Richard Rankin - oops! But being a fan, he was so kind to grant a photo. I had great luck!
Nice! I heard a new Rebus series was being made when I was over in Edinburgh this year. Was wondering who would play Rebus, an actor named Richard Rankin? interesting last name lol
Just found your videos and really enjoying them. I am in my 60s Edinburgh born and bred and have always been interested in the history of the city but there is always something new to learn. I knew about all the execution sites but not the one near the playhouse so thanks for the info.
Hi i love your videos. down the Grassmarket there is a entrance /close next to W.Armstrong and son and as you go in to it there is a Plaque on the wall that tells the story how the Good People of Edinburgh Ambushed a crocked Police man and hanged him i would like to hear more about this if you have any infomation Regards Mick.
My kids would probably ask me to be 🤐 before we reach the end of that grassmarket🤣 Thank you for another entertaining & informative video, Tony! 💙🏴💙
Just recently went on a vacation with my wife and kids to Edinburgh, we had stayed in an apartment within Fiddles Close, fascinating history all around you there, so much to take in. We had been informed that The Last Drop pub on the Grass Market was a place to take the people who were destined for the gallows for a shot of whiskey, this was a way for them to loosen up so the hanging would work properly. Will certainly be returning back to Edinburgh in the near future, even though the costs from Canada can be enormous 😆
HI, I just found your channel and we love your videos. My family and I are coming from Canada to Edinburgh in Sept and find your videos very informative and helpful. Perhaps we could meet up for a pint when we get there. Cheers, Kevin from Canada🥳🍺
We stayed in the Wild apartment just up the street from the grass market. In there courtyard there is a marker that shows where they jousted in 1487. Our tour guide was unaware of it. At the time.
You do an awesome job every one of your videos Jamaica trip to Edinborough so easy with the shortcuts and everything else never stop keep up the good work
Fact number 11: Mr and Mrs Grape Soda Travels had their first date in a lovely Italian restaurant on the Grassmarket. It's now called o'Oliviera but it was called Gennaro's then. Happy days!
And just down the West Port road is Tanners Close where Burke and Hare committed most of their murders, I remember the kerfuffle when the new buildings were built there back in 1980,s
Hi, we had a brief chat this morning on the royal mile. Discussed my place of work at the mid end of the mile opposite Starbucks, it would be good to talk again some time.
Hi, Tony, love your videos. Being originally from Musselburgh, it's great to hear all your history of Edinburgh. But one thing that's been bugging me. Pictures are hung, people are hanged. The engraving on the pavement in the Grassmarket pavement got it right! Please don't hate me 🙏❤
The grass market of the 70's wasn't such a nice place, with the sally army doss house at one end and most of the pubs being go go, bars but it was fun.
You're right hanging was a big occasion where people consumed large amounts of alcohol. The next day after the hanging was over they’d be suffering. That’s where the word “ Hangover “ comes from.
Great fact! I never knew that.

Edinburgh has fantastic ice cream due to our Italian brothers.Great video, more of them please.
I laughed way to much at your “spirits” joke. Love your videos, Tony, I had the inside scoop on places when I visited this past December.

Gallows, I think is the word you wanted.
My wife, a nurse, trained at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary from 1974 to 1978, and remember the Grassmarket as being famous for its homeless hostels.
Thank you, Tony! I always enjoy your tours around Edinburgh and I learn something new every time. I saw things that I missed when I was there, so you know I'll be on the lookout for them next time!!!
Cheers, Tony.
I live in Australia now and I've not been home to Scotland for 25 years so i find myself living vicariously through your videos.
Love the video, Tony. IInteresting facts. Love the humor, too. Have a great weekend.
Hi Tony...there is also another Flodden Wall marker at the bottom of the steps...spotted it on Thursday on my way down the steps.
Wonderful stories!

An Italian restaurant started by a Canadian in Scotland. Love it! So global.
Thank you! I was struggling to remember Gold Leader having a Scottish accent.
Tony, you had The Last Drop Pub behind you talking about the hanging spot. You have mentioned that before, I believe.
My kids would probably ask me to be 🤐 before we reach the end of that grassmarket🤣 Thank you for another entertaining & informative video, Tony! 💙🏴💙
Blessed be xx😂😂

Its Edinburgh, NO Os in EDINBURGH.
The Flodden wall. If you were to head up the steps by towards the castle. Has the side of the Cold Town house been built on remains of that wall?

People are hanged, pictures are hung. Otherwise, very interesting.
