  • In this weeks Edinburgh Vlog we trace the route of the Flooden wall. The Flodden wall was a barrier the went round the outskirts of old Edinburgh before the new town existed. It was build in 1513 after scotland lost the Battle of Flodden.
This week we walk around Edinburgh finding the remaining original parts of the wall that still stand. A sure piece of Edinburgh History.

Just returned to Melbourne from Edinburgh. What a fantastic place, i didnt realize i was staying near one end of the wall near Hollyrood apartments. So much history and such a fantastic vibe. My 7 year old daughter was crying when we had to say goodbye to greyfriers 'Bobby', her favorite dog. I said dont worry we will be back someday!

There were three walls in Edinburgh; The King's Wall, The Flodden Wall, and the Telfer Wall. The King's Wall was the oldest dating back to about 1450 and encompassed a tiny section of the city, basically just the Royal Mile. Of course, with the growth of the population, expansion must happen, so they built the Flodden Wall a bit further away in about 1514. However, the population continued to grow so they extended the city's boundaries again by building the Telfer Wall in about 1620. After that, I think they gave up on the whole wall idea and just let the city sprawl beyond the walls. To this day, Edinburgh is still a relatively small city for its reputation and status partly in thanks to these walls!

Always fancied trying g to follow the Flodden wall all the way round myself. I’m an engineer turned Scottish tour guide after my retirement so I knew about as much about Scottish history a couple of years ago as you do. Couple of things, James IV didn’t decide to build the wall cos he was deid! Died at the battle of Flodden, the last British Monarch to be killed in battle. Oh and that wisnae George Square, that was Bristo Square. Great video though. Entertaining and I always learn something. Steuart.

You walked right past one end. There is a small plaque on a bit of a wall where the Flodden wall enters Greyfriars on the east side. You would have seen it as you walked up Forrest Rd. from the south. The Flodden wall proceeded from the south side of the museum, crossing Forrest Rd. and into the kirkyard. Look on Google Street View right between the ice cream shop and the barber shop - you can see the little plaque - if you zoom in on it you can't read much but you can clearly see it says Flodden Wall. Very cool.

In my childhood, a part of the Flodden Wall was encased in glass and stood on the ground floor of the museum in Chambers Street. There was a staircase which sound round the case and you could walk round it.

If you ask a guide in the museum nicely he will show you that bit of wall. It's in a part of the museum not generally available for the public to view. The guide told me he had been working there for twenty years and I was the fourth person that ever asked him to see it. It no longer has a glass case round it.

Just recently stumbled across your UA-cam channel. I am thoroughly enjoying your videos and all of the information you provide. My great great grandfather lived in Pleasance Street in 1845, and probably walked past the Flodden Wall many, many times. I was supposed to be over in July (from the States) but sadly cannot travel now. Your videos are a great source of historical perspective for me and I thank you for that.

Just near where you ended in this video is a place in the wall that had windows put into it which were later filled in with stone. I wish I could attach a picture here, because I know you like that sort of thing so much. Above that blocked up window these words are set in stone: "This window was made in the old city wall with the sanction of the town council 1876." I thought I'd share that in case you're interested in seeking that out next time you're near that area of Flodden Wall.

@@ClanBroonford I can't take credit for the hospital name, my gf spotted that, which is kinda funny given I used to go past the place every day on the bus back in my uni days (it was before HW moved entirely out to Riccarton; my 1st year lectures in '87 were mostly in the old freezing cold theatres in Chambers St.)
It's funny about that section of wall; prompted by your videos my gf & I went roaming around the cemetary a few weeks back and, finding that wall, I remember thinking, why on earth is this here? I must have visually seen the Flodden Wall sign on the side, but it didn't click.
Btw, when at uni some lectures were in the Quadrangle (HW owned it in '87; the art college took it over later); back then, after hours, it was possible to go round the back through the cemetery and climb over the wall to get in, did it a few times for some late night coding sessions in the biology dept's BBC Micro lab. :D I wonder if it was the Flodden wall I climbed over? Or just that extension section that heads back inwards? Can't remember now, and eventually (coupla years later) all the ways in were blocked off anyway (it was same era when all the unprotected entrancies around old Edinburgh to the undercity were being sealed off by the council - do you remember there used to be one to the left of the old Infirmary? Students used to go in on late night dares, though I never did).
And yes the castle visit was good! We just managed to avoid the rain. There was a wedding going on in the great hall at 3pm so we had to kinda navigate around that somewhat, but it was ok. Had to giggle at the outfits some of the guests were wearing. :} More so at their footwear as some struggled up the spiral staircase (which btw is one of the widest I've ever seen in a castle). Talking to one of the event staff, I was amused that they're not allowed to use real candles at such events; all looked a bit cringe tbh. One thing about the castle caught my eye: the uneven ground in some areas (hilltop bedrock I guess), made me wonder whether originally there would have been wooden walkways on top for surer footing. The other thing that struck me was how comparatively thin some of the walls were. Oh, something my gf noticed, did you find the closed off mini cemetary in the lawn grounds, on the side facing the main entrance? Inside on the walls were some memorial stones; rather curious that for two of them, the husband's name at the top was dated in demise later than the wife's name at the bottom, ie. the latter copped it earlier but didn't get to be on the stone until the Lord had expired aswell.
Speaking of castles, have you been to Bamburgh Castle, the one to the south of Lindisfarne? Well worth visiting if not, it's what I'd call a proper castle.
And thanks again for the gets-us-out-of-the-house inspiration! 8) Honestly your channel deserves to be a lot more well known, both my locals and visitors.

That’s very cool, love to hear or in this case, read stories like that. No have never been to Bamburgh castle. Will try at some point to get there. And thank you very much, that’s very kind of you to say so. Love making the videos. Maybe one day more people will find us, but for now all you Clan Broonford are amazing.

@@ClanBroonford Most welcome!! Something I like to do btw is buy a souvenir mug from a castle's tat shop (if they have one), I have a thin high shelf in my lounge with many such mugs - Caernarfon, Kidwelly, Tintagel, Corfe, Raby, Barnard, Sherborne, Chirk, etc., though most castle souvenir shops sadly don't (and sometimes I've not bought them when the price has been insane). Ho hum, it's a thing. :D
Beware though, some castles are not what they seem, as explained by our roving reporter who sometimes comes along (Ragnar the Viking squirrel; don't ask, long story):
      www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/Ragnar_at_Lowther_Castle.mp4
Other times though, places can be unexpectedly good (not a castle in this case, but still):
      www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/Ragnar_at_Abbotsford_House.mp4
And yes, Ragnar covered Craigmillar. :D Not yet edited.
Don't have to be mad in this day & age, but it helps.

When you were going along Lauriston Place about opposite the old Royal Infirmary you about turned and made your way to Greyfriars Churchyard.Had you continued past George Heriots School the next opening on your right would have brought you down the side of the school and that is where the remaining part of the Flodden wall is.This takes you down the stairs to the Grassmarket facing the Castle. You did reach there a long war around..
You mentioned earlier about George Herriots and I think you said George Herriots University.?
Sorry I love watching your videos but I know you are not using a script and all your info is from the top of your head which is brilliant but you did err a few times when you said Flodding, and when you wished the American Pipe band that they might have won the pipe ( ?) competition, should have been piping competition.
Hope you don’t mind my comments.Kindest regards Harry

Have you ever been in the parking lot of the Apex Grassmarket Hotel? You will be surprised. there is a wall there and a ruin, a building something. I think it is your missing piece. If it is, it is a sin, there is a disaster. vegetation grown through the windows of the ruin, a smoking place for hotel employees, is not cared for at all. I looked at that wall every day, helplessly!

We all know Edinburgh is full of ghosts. It must have been the ghost of James IV who kind of panicked and said "We lost that."
