Alex Hefner so just giving you some insight. In Massachusetts where I’m from there was this radio station called WAAF and back in 2003 they were in the studio and they did this song for the time on spot unrehearsed and completely nailed it and when they saw that they could do this song they song really good they recorded the version you hear now down in Florida

I've seen Shinedown perform live twice now, and hearing this song live with the whole crowd singing along is just jaw dropping. Talk about goosebumps, your entire body will be crawling.
This is still my favorite Alex's Mom cameo. It's the only cover of "Simple Man" that needs to exist. It's beautiful. Mom rocked the "Have a Dope Ass Day shirt" and everything.

So cool you stopped and did this video with your mom, my mom's favorite band was Shinedown and this was her favorite version of the song. This was her song to me it always made he tear up, every time I hear it I think of her and now that she has passed away I tear up every time, cancer took her at age 58 a year ago. Who ever reads this cherish your mom tell her you love her every chance you get you only get a limited time with her and it goes fast.
Sorry for your loss. Keep Shinedown music in your life. I hope it will ease some of your pain and bring you more happier memories.

@@loganviking3923 Its because they never play it live. In the 11 years since its release, they've played it twice. Once back in like 2010 and once last year at an acoustic show, where Brent couldn't finish the song cause he started crying at the last chorus. Barry then explained that it's a very emotional song written about a very dark time in Brent's life, and that's why they don't play it.

Also, I'm Not Strong Enough, which is Brent Smith with Apocalyptica. Absolutely amazing, completely overlooked by reactors. But make sure you're not listening to the version with Doug Robb singing...not the same feeling at all, IMHO.

The first time I heard this cover, I had to pull over on the side of the road because I was bawling so hard I couldn't drive. Brent Smith has a way with his voice that invokes such strong emotions. Acoustic Shinedown is a treasure.

Shinedown is one of my most favorite bands, and this is one of my most favorite covers! Brent’s voice sounds so good in this song, and it just is amazing overall. It’s one of the few songs I can listen to over and over again and not get tired of! ❤️

This song still cuts straight through my heart. It came out right when my dad was killed. I was still in the military so I had to fly home for the funeral. When I got to my grandmother's house all my boys in the family were waiting for me. They pulled me aside, handed me a cold beer and played this song as loud as it would go all night.

I love that you did this song and version. Their “rock version” is also really great. The Lynard Skynard original was what my mom and I danced to at my wedding. She would always point out that those where the words for me from her when ever the song came on the radio.
His voice really is incredible. The entire band puts on such a good concert.
There is a live version where he dedicates the song to Dimebag. The little story before hand and the vocals will give you chills.

Saw these guys live in May of 2019, amazing show. Every song they played the crowd knew and sang every word.
I was very close to my mom. Seeing you two together listening to music reminds me of driving with her and showing each other different songs. I lost her 3 years ago to cancer. Enjoy her company as long as you can.

There is another version he sang live it was a tribute to Dimebag Darryl so he was raw with emotion because that was right after he was killed. It is on UA-cam & on their DVD live from the Inside. It was back during their Leave a whisper tour.

Brent Smith has an amazing voice! I’ve seen shinedown 3 times and they always play this song and even 15+ years after they recorded it he still sounds great. Some other shinedown songs to check out call me, crow and the butterfly, second chance, through the ghost, I’ll follow you, get up. Burning bright, 45, how did you love, shed some light, I dare you and Brent Smith also does a song with apocalyptica called not sting enough that is awesome! The whole band Lynyrd Skynyrd wasn’t killed in a plane crash, two main members, including he lead singer and a back up song singer were killed. The lead guitarist of shinedown at the time this cover was recorded was involved with the lead guitarist of Skynyrd’s bands daughter. ( the lead guitarist of Skynyrd was also the lead singer of Skynyrds brother)
There are a number of live performances on UA-cam of this performance. HIGHLY recommend it. Being there when they perform is magic. I've seen Shinedown live 6 times.

Look up the official Shinedown Simple Man video. In that video, Jasin Todd (guitarist) is married to Melody Van Zant. Melody is the daughter of Ronnie Van Zant (singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd). The little girl in the video is Jason and Melody's daughter. She's holding the picture of her Grandpa Ronnie. This is deeper than just covering a song.. they're family. Shinedown is amazing! This is more than a straight cover of Skynyrd - there are deeper connections between Shinedown and Skynyrd. Shinedown's original guitarist Jasin Todd was, and still is, married to the late great Ronnie Van Zant's (lead singer fo Skynyrd, who died in that plane crash for those that don't know) daughter, Melody. Shinedown is also from Skynyrds hometown of Jacksonville, Florida and when they started out they used play a venue called Freebird Live, which was owned by Judy Van Zant, Melody's mother and Ronnie's widow. Shinedown used to perform this as a tribute to Ronnie and a thank you to Judy for all her support. Incidentally, in the official video you see a little girl holding a framed picture of a man - the man in the picture is Ronnie Van Zant and the little girl is his granddaughter. The best comment I've seen about Shinedown and Skynyrd is "People don't realise that Shinedown are Lynyrd Skynyrd's family".
