      You know, and I think that I can speak for everyone, the "Relish" is slang for Sex Lube. So, this song is as Perverted as any other 5 Neat Guys song. If you listen to the lyrics carefully, the song is about a Gang Bang session on a Sunday afternoon. Really really sick stuff. I can't see how The 5 Neat Guys made it into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

    Flaherty’s secretly drunk guy is one of my favorite comedy add-ons in history. Doesn’t draw attention to it, just sticks with the bit every time.

      Absolutely. We won't see anything similar to this again, probably. Andrea Martin and Catherine O'Hara just as funny in their way! (Martin Short slightly less funny, at least on SCTV, but he had his moments.)

    I still remember when The Rolling Stones opened for The 5 Neat Guys at Wembley Stadium back in 79. The groupies for the 5NG were insane. Even Patsy was there. She was so excited that she threw her 'large bra' on to the stage. Really Neat!

    Great stuff. At that time (1981 - 82) it seemed every other TV commercial would feature old pop singers promoting a greatest hits album. SCTV parodies always had more wit and ingenuity than SNL.

      Both shows had their moments. Martin Short's character Jackie Rodgers Jr. was created on SCTV, but his best sketch as Jackie was on SNL with Christopher Guest & Billy Crystal as Sammy Davis Jr.

      If Mitch Miller ran a label in the '80's, he would have actually had an artist record that. If you saw some of the titles Miller had his acts on Columbia record, it'd turn your stomach. "A Guy Is A Guy" by Doris Day wasn't exactly wholesome family entertainment.

    Center. They slayed with a medley of Who Made the Egg Salad Sandwiches,
    My Dad's Car and Don't Mess With Me Punk. E Guy signed my breast after
    the show.

      @@MrAitraining that's what makes the story of SCTV so incredible--they had a "shoestring" budget--they had to take the filming at one point to Edmonton to save money---Andrea Martin has said in interviews that they hired 20 year olds with no experience to help with sets/editing etc--and they were incredibly enthusiastic just to work with the cast

    Rick Moranis has always been underappreciated. He has great subtlety comedy which I actually think is the best comedy. He doesn't go over the top but if you watch him he is pure genius.

      Did you feel he was underappreciated at the time? He was maybe my favorite. Maybe it just feels that way now because he dropped out of show business to raise his kids and so just wasn't in the public eye like the other folks?

      My dad was in advertising so he got one from work--a faux wood top loader. I'd tape it as I'd watch it and then watch it again the next morning with him and my dad.

    Truly amazing contribution to the quality of our lives.Never laughed so hard before or since those sctv years. Though it goes unsaid, thanks so much for the influential role in our lives and identities as Canadians. We live better lives, as well rounded comical cubists, always able to find a humersome perspective in any scenario we face in life. Thanks to learning as schoolchildren, from your comedic geniuses , assembled in the powerhouse of humorist.     It's hilarious how they managed to convey the different personalities of the Neat Guys just with body language. Candy was the older, mellow one, Levy was the nerd, Moranis the eager, young one, and Flaherty the drunk. Not sure about Thomas however

    Two of my favorites are 'Who put the pennies in my loafer's', and 'Let's have a party in my rec room'. 'My mom framed my high school diploma', is another good one. Thank you K-Tel records.

    Flaherty's character is drunk in every one of the "5 neat guys" sketches. Subtle but hilarious; he's snapping out of tune and a little late to his marks, blinking too long, etc.

    I love the fact that Joe Flaherty is so obviously drunk but trying to hold it together in the 5 neat guys commercials. That and Rick Moranis' dead pan, straight-on, stare at the camera. The songs speak for themselves...I wish this was a real record too!

      Yes, he was wonderful. I started watching SCTV way back in the 70's. I loved watching so many of the cast in tv shows and movies throughout the years. I had the pleasure of watching them be interviewed and perform some improv in Vancouver a few decades ago. I was heart-broken when John Candy died. Still miss him after all these years.

    I remember these 5 guys were pushing boundaries back here in Canada back in '52 before they got big south of the border, the really redefined the word "Neat" as before it meant something like organized and tidy, after them it meant swell or even golly gee.
