"I don't have to explain. You saw it. He beat the woman unconscious with a puppet." That line from Levy as Howard Cosell was just the cherry on top for this skit. Just hilarious.

@@RideAcrossTheRiver That is actually Earth, Wind & Fire's song "In the Stone" from their I Am album. TV shows back in the 70's and 80's could get away with using contemporary songs without paying royalties.
Another absolutely classic SCTV skit. As a Canadian, this warms my heart. As an aside, I think that Rick Moranis does a better Dick Cavett than Dick Cavett.
I was doing something else with this in the background. It was so spot on, I stopped what I was doing to come look and see if they had gotten the real Dick Cavett for the sketch.

Eugene Levy's spot-on Cosell popped into my mind today and this skit is still so fresh.
Yeah, he pulls all the Cosell-isms. The sanctimonious complaining, the "It's a TREMENDOUS fight". Eerily accurate impression. It's not like Levy was/is a professional Cosell imitator. He's got a huge bag of tricks. This was just a one-off, but he absolutely nailed it.
Even after 40+ years since I first saw this skit, I still piss my pants laughing when Mr. Rogers lands that left hook

Rick Moranis's Cavett is outright eerie.
Moranis' s Cavett interview of Bobby Bittman was one of the funniest things I ever saw--he was reviewing Bittman's acting/directing in a movie ("Funny Stuff")--which wasn't funny at all-he was condescending and cruel to Bittman and yet Bittman didn't realize it until the end when he just got up and left
Yep I remember that one. where Bittman was trying to be a serious actor. Too funny. SCTV really got how ridiculous Hollywood is. Amazing that they weren't bared from working in that town.
Yep, that was a highlight. As well as Bobby Bittman's PSA for libraries ("lie-barrys") and Moby Dick, "...a story about a boy... and a whale... and all their adventures." Great stuff! SCTV was amazing.

Add Moranis doing Merv Griffin. Awesome. Actors you don't think could be imitated, Moranis nailed.
John Candy as Julia Child! Perfect.
The guys were firing on all cylinders in this one! This sketch never gets old,easily one of the all-time SCTV classics. All of these impressions are absolutely spot-on!

Why is it so damn funny?
The Dick Cavett impression is uncanny. And this sketch is pure gold to someone who used to watch the programs of Mr. Rogers and Julia Child on PBS in the 1970s. I love this.
“Coq au Vin. Or no Coq au Vin. This woman is in trouble” Makes me laugh every time. Levy is bang-on with his Cosell imitation.
Didn't notice him at first--King Friday cheering wildly in Mr. Rogers' corner. Hilarious. Also, loved Julia Child getting water from a roasting pan via turkey baster.

Just think that we had SCTV long enough to appreciate and long enough to take it for granted. Its era seems like a simpler and better time now.

Martin Short as Fred Rogers. Absolutely HILARIOUS! When he turned to camera and smiled, I roared with laughter! I could almost hear Howard Cosell's stacatto voice, "Ro-gers drops Child in the opening salvo!" Forgive me, I was laughing too hard to hear what he actually said here.
He's hitting Child with the loveable King Friday.
That was hilarious, right out of 1970's Pro Wrestling.

This skit is utterly brilliant. Every single part of it. Even the passing reference by Howard Cosell to "Roone" meaning Roone Arledge, the President of ABC (Cosell's network) Sports at the time. Rick Moranis' impression of Dick Cavett might just be the most spot-on impression of anyone, I've ever seen.
"Right there! He rocked Julia Child with a devastating left!" That has been my battle cry for 40 years.

PBS did a 6-part series on television and showcased this skit in their episode on tv comedy, narrated by Edwin Newman.
Best comedy skit show ever. I can't believe it's 40 years since I used to stay up late (as a kid) with one of my older sisters on Sat nights to watch this. Good times. Great show.

In Chicago it was on right after the original cast from Saturday Night Live Incredible 2 hours of Comedy every week
As good as Martin Short and John Candy were in this sketch (and they were good), it's Eugene Levy's Howard Cosell that makes it (and special nod to Moranis's Dick Cavett). Some of SCTV's impersonation were so good they were eerie.
bob hope , bing crosby, merv griffin, woody allen, etc. very underated group of actors in this bunch.
Moranis as David Brinkley...."why can't I find a weed that will get me stoned?" in that trademark slow Brinkley speech.
Shame we'll never see this type of Comedy again.......
Martin Short's Mr. Rodgers did a little Ed Grimley there at the end.

One of the greatest comedy shows of all time.
The fact that they embellished it with Speedy Delivery and King Friday is what makes it so great!
Eugene's makeup to look like Cosell is excellent. Also the makeup of Mr. Rogers and Julia Childs. Love Moranis as Cavett. Damn this show was great, and they came up with some really wacky scenarios.

Hands down the best AND funniest TV show ever. I was a college student in the early 80's and every Sunday working at the Sears Auto Center. We spent all workday noon 'til 5 reliving every hilarious SCTV skit from the night before. We had no clue how highly regarded SCTV and the incredible cast would be years from back then. Every so often my wife and I will dial up these old SCTV shows on UA-cam for our guests and sit back and enjoy the amazement on THEIR faces. Thank you one and all SCTV 😊

I had fun. There was plenty of crap too; the Cold War and emergence of AIDS come to mind. But I was a kid and had a great decade. Alway loved this show then...and now.

Every single line is perfect and every single body movement is perfect. I can watch these clips a hundred times and still discover something in a movement or line I didn't notice before. It is perfect comedy. Long live SCTV.

its absolutely a classic--feel honored I got to see this when it first came out--back when comedy was actually funny (not like the garbage that's available now)--its fascinating too that SCTV worked for many years on a "shoestring" budget yet were able to produce the quality of shows/ideas/skits they did--it was like "lightening in a bottle" and I doubt we will ever see anything like this again

I can't believe how many hours I spent watching re-runs of SCTV on CityTV Toronto when I was a kid.
Everyone knows Rick Moranis as a hilarious character actor, which he is. But I am just impressed as hell with his abilities as an impressionist. If you have never seen his impression of George Carlin, look it up. It is pure comedy gold.

It does not get any better than this! This was one of the best shows of all time. I think my favorite was Five Neat Guys. Of course, the egg salad song was epic!! 🤩😂

I remember as a kid trying to tune in Channel 79 from Toronto. We lived 20 miles SW of Hamilton and it took some bending of the UHF antenna to get a somewhat fuzzy picture. When we could zero it in, it was watching comedy gold to see SCTV,just loved it. Special shout out to WUTV 29 in the 70’s for their lineup to keep us farm kids entertained.
John Candy looked awfully close to Julia Child in this sketch. The makeup artists were amazing.
The match itself was hilarious.

Actually these sketches hold up great todayt. I recently found the first 2 seasons of SNL and was amazed at how unfunny the dated hippy humor had become!
Thank you, yes. SNL was disjointed and sophomoric. SCTV was brilliant.
While I prefer SCTV, it's apples and oranges to compare a taped show to a live show done on a six day turnaround. The whole idea of SNL at its inception was to bring live performance back to television.

I don't know if you saw it but they did a reboot of Battle Of The Network Stars last year but since there are so many TV networks now they did stuff like reality stars against TV cops. Don't think it even made it one season.
The way Fred Rogers came out and floored Julia Childs had me in absolute tears laughing.

I thought the mouth guard was his real (fake) teeth for the Character. He looks Hilarious and It made me laugh out loud! Took a couple of times watching it (on my phone) to realize what it really was. I feel very lucky to have lived during the time of SCTV!

I loved that show when I was in HS; the only comedy show I loved more was Monty Python. The level of humor in both shows was sublime for a teen nerd like me.
I spent many an evening as a teen watching Monty Python. The Ministry of Silly Walks sketch was the first one I ever saw, it is crazy how almost 35 years later I remember just changing the knob (70s and 80s channel surfing for you young people out there) and saw this lanky, serious gentleman stepping down a sidewalk in an odd fashion, and then the sign... I burst out laughing, sat down on the floor, and never looked back.

Perfection. There is no other word that can describe this entire bit. I miss good, funny shows like this. I'm glad I grew up in that era and got to see this stuff when it happened!
I lived in Canada for some years and absolutely fell in love with this show. Nothing has ever compared to this stuff. And let’s not forget all the stars that evolved from this show 😂
